I failed on my weekend away. I started out well. I ordered two large bottles of Perrier at the concert, but the night was just too long (there was the initial wait from when doors opened and then three bands for a total of 5 hours). I ended up ordering a wine, which would have been fine, but it came in a can and was 8 oz. That was large enough to get me quite buzzed (my tolerance is quite low currently) and proved to be my undoing, and I ended up saying yes to another. I learned: a) I am currently not able to go sit in a bar/club for more than a couple of hours and not drink; b) once I have the first drink, I am likely to have a second (and third and maybe fourth).
Starting over. Day 4 AF. My birthday is in a couple of Sundays, and I have to figure out a fun activity that will not involve drinking. My liver is unhappy with my two nights of drinking, so that should be sufficient motivation to take a good long break again.
That right, start over. Eventually it'll get less and less if u focus on af it'll will come.
Happy, happy birthday to u when it comes. If u want to drink on your birthday may be u could try to keep dry till then. Then on your birthday have sips of water through out the night . That keep u hydrated and fill u up. Alcohol is dehydrating. Abt!! Have a super wonderful day3 -

Thank you! I want to try not to drink until we go on our family snowboarding holiday in December, so I am going to aim for AF till then. That will be about a month.
I sure am noticing how awful I feel the next day after drinking. And water just doesn’t seem to cut it for me when I am out, but the flavoured Perrier was delicious. I felt weird ordering a third Perrier. Geesh. So silly thinking about that now. And I have to let go of trying not to drink my calories in those nights. I thought I had, but when the time came, I quickly ordered the wine. It would be much better for my health to have a pop or juice than a drink or drinks.5 -
Thank you for welcoming me into the group! Last night was quiet the challenge! I went to a fundraising gala for a local theatre. When I arrived and entered the building, there were waiters lined up with red and white wine. I thought "How rude! Don't they know there are some people who are trying not to drink?" Silly, I know... but I found one of the welcoming waiters had a tray of sparkling water and lime. I was strong enough to grab one of those. Okay I was very good about not drinking at this thing but jeez... they offer you booze so freely! The bar was free, the waiters always there with a bottle of wine to fill 'er up... and I had to constantly just say no. It helped that I was with two friends who know I am on this path. Just having them there helped me keep my resolve. So that was a victory. The unsuccessful part was that I indulged in the desert tray and had 3 cheesecake bites. Since I have really been limiting my sugar, I actually had a sugar headache this morning. I'd take that headache any day over an alcohol hangover.
So this isn't easy at all... but I am going to keep to the course for as long as I can. I am here to help and support as much as I can. You have all already helped me by providing a place where we can talk about this.

My way out now is soda water or mineral water with sliced lemon or berries. You can have as many as u want, by the end of the evening u feel good.3 -
Hi all, I’m trying to lose a good 8 pounds and wine is my vice!! I have been a daily 2-3 glass of wine drinker. I never want more than that but I also drink daily which is neither healthy or what I want to do. I find that drinking a glass while cooking and then another with dinner lead to less portion control. I’m very healthy otherwise- I work out daily, run 20+ miles a week and love veggie heavy food and lots of variety. Anyway, it’s good to connect with others trying to cut back. I’m currently doing a 10 challenge to not drink and log all my calories with Thanksgiving as the goal!7

I either have bitters and soda or lately I've been asking for tonic water and lime. It's a different taste but it adds variety and makes me feel like part of the crowd!

Have you guys tried La Croix? It’s super yummy with crushed ice in a fancy glass with lemon and/or limes.
You guys going to events and not drinking are so inspirational. I have done well because I haven’t gone anywhere except out to dinner and I have always only drank water with food anyway. But a party or gala would be very difficult for me, so props to you guys! That is awesome!!3 -

Hi, @SanDiegofitmom ! You sound a lot like me (though I've been logging everything for 3 years 7 months).
I'm a runner, and gave up drinking 2-3 drinks a day in February.
This supportive thread has been a huge help in my staying alcohol-free since then.
I always felt "fine" as a daily drinker, but I didn't know how much better I could actually feel!- No guilt, fear, or foreboding about what the drinking is doing to me.
- Sleeping soundly.
- Better memory.
- Huge boost in creativity.
- No mood swings.
- Better relationships.
- More money!
I hope you get great benefits from your 10 day challenge. Keep us posted how you're going!

Thanks @Orphia yeah I’m finishing day three. So far so good. I definitely love not waking up with regret and saving 💰 money. I’m also doing the 10 day weigh in challenge on MFP so it’s a nice combo!4

Hi everyone... Usually Thursday night is me with a glass of wine watching Grey's Anatomy (and let's be honest 1 usually turns to 2-3). Tonite I watched with a nice hot cup of tea and now off to bed. Yay me! Moving along nicely with my goal of no drinks until Thanksgiving.10

What's it like for calorie intake?0 -
Hi all. I've tried to join in in this thread before but always ended up drinking anyways. I turned 39 yesterday and have decided that as I enter this last year of my 30s, I want to drink much less and get back in shape. I see my weight creeping up, my pants are tight, my heart rate soars when I exercise (if I exercise, which I haven't been doing as much of).
Years ago I had a pattern of very excessive drinking in relation to marriage issues and an emergence of a mental illness. I sobered up and got back on track, using Moderation Management for support. My intention has never been to completely stop drinking, I just want to be able to have one or two drinks and cut it off there, instead of binge drinking and eating all the junk food and getting poor sleep.
I need to figure out how to get back on track and assess what is a reasonable expectation for myself in terms of alcohol use.
Best wishes to you all!6 -

Day 4 and first non-wine weekend in a while. I’m looking forward to it actually! Have a good weekend all!3

Way to go! I was the same way, but with more nights and shows than just Thursday with Meredith Grey! Having tea really helped me and made me sleepy in a good way. Keep it going!1 -

What's it like for calorie intake?
12 oz of Tonic Water is 124 calories -- so I definitely have only one for sure.1 -
Just starting so here goes!7

Hey everyone. WOW look at the long timers getting back in here. Great to see you again @SanDiegofitmom, @htimpaired and @Alzzi76( yup I recognized you😉) And a big hello and great to have you @annliz23. I had made up a post a few days ago and thought it posted BUT it got lost in cyber space some how.
Big news....this is a long streak AF for me....THREE WEEKS.
As several others mentioned I think I may have some alcohol on Thanksgiving to. Compared to past times around this year I almost can't believe I am AF during some of the biggest drinking events in the year. Feels fantastic.
Keep expressing yourself and coming in for support. Even us seasoned thread clingers benefit from each and every thought you have.
Successful weekend to all.8 -

Writing is one of the ways that not drinking has made me more productive and creative.
I wrote on my blog about less alcohol and my going over 9 months so far.
Link on my profile, which is public. /shamelessplug

Our culture seems based on what reminds me of a Vonnegut "Granfalloon".
Alcohol is supposed to be this fun, social thing. But mostly it seems people do it because they really hate being out of their homes and having to talk to people.
So they often end up staying at home drinking and feeling guilty for drinking because they're not out "having fun" and talking to people.
A grand fallacy.6 -
Sunday dinner is always a test for me. Itll b 5 weeks today8

Sometimes it helps if you tell someone supportive that you are cutting back on food or alcohol. They can help hold you accountable when you start to slip up. "Supportive" is NOT the husband who brings you donuts even when you've asked him not to..."but hunny, they were on sale and they are your favorite kind !" "Supportive" is NOT the best friend who comes over for a "gal chat" and brings a bottle of wine with her.
"Supportive" is my middle daughter who is my cat-sitter and has the ability to find a bottle if I even TRIED to hide one. "Supportive" is my daughter who is also on the diet journey with me, and when I mentioned today that I'm less than eight pounds from my weight goal, so maybe we could stop at the wine store.... Gracious, I made a Church Lady swear....
You guys are also holding me accountable [if even only in my mind] so I thank you all.
Don't forget to stock up on bitters & tonic & sparkling juices for the holidays..."Do I want a drink, or am I just dehydrated ?"
Day 155. Ain't easy. But doable.

Went out to eat with the husband. We had to sit in the bar because it was so full and he was like “you’re gonna have a drink, right?” and I was like, “yes...a Diet Coke”😃. Easy peasy! Day 10 af! Yeh me😃
I agree having you guys has been a huge help to me, to keep me accountable. I really appreciate all of you. Thank you.
Happy Saturday night all!!❤️7 -
Hi all the new-to-me faces! Loving all the insights.
I am finishing up day 7 af, and I am noticing some grumpiness/depression, but I am sure that it is not new and was just previously ignored or hidden by alcohol. I have used alcohol as a way of self-medicating since my teens. It has been tough to feel all the feels lately.4 -

I’m on day five (doing a 10 day AF challenge until Thanksgiving) I am also grumpy and my kids driving me nuts lol.

I'm very sympathetic. That's my old tune and still seeing it as old. I'm hoping it'll never come back.
I have now found alternatives. I still have the occasional old thoughts of just having a shot to help me get over what I'm going through but I have come this far and don't want to break the streak.
Also the after feelings of guilt and intoxication has been bad enough for me to dread it again. The money that gets spent in detoxing to feel good again isn't worth it. Makes it double spending.
Hang in there.. your doing great job.. that feeling will soon b over. Itll be from detoxing. Your body has been used to alcohol so u have to break the habit. But u need to replace it with a treat.. Something u enjoy that's healthy.
Atb!!.. we are here to support..

*Hugs * .. thanku for your kind words..
Week 6 has begun.. I drank Sanpellegrino with lemon slices. Ready for another 5 k run/ walk when I get home.
(I used to have go straight to bed and wouldn't see me till next day. My family duties waiting for me to wake. Not nice )1
