Why I left Weight Watchers new "Freestyle" Program

I found the new plan too faffy - MFP is much more flexible - the only bit I do like is the free fruit and veg on WW as it makes measuring easier!1

I'm just glad I found MFP.2

I also am giving up on WW. The first time I did it was in 2016 and I lost weight so seamlessly based on the Smart Points system. Then they switched to Freestyle, and I feel like I eat two meals a day and go over the points. I can't eat with my partner. I can't go to eat with friends. I can't have a beer. And I can't handle feeling hungry and guilty every day.
Also, it's not healthy to eat eggs every day- that's why people at risk for heart disease are told to limit their consumption to every few days.
Back to counting calories, which worked for me for 10 years. Today is the first day that I was motivated to go out and have a walk, and I am to the end of my day, proud that I haven't gone over my calories, and don't feel too hungry.
Thanks for the fellowship of this convo thread. Feel free to add me and DM.

Someone needs to do a more recent google search.9 -
I don't get WW, my DIL has been going for about a month. How can fruit and veg be free foods? A person could literally eat fruit or veg all day long with WW and be under their points...

Which is why some of them aren't losing. Nothing in life is free, lol.5 -
I track here and use weight watchers for weigh ins. I lost about twice as much weight using that method last month for the month. It keeps me accountable. Also, the good thing about wls is that it helps you stop and if you mostly eat healthy foods those take up more space in your stomach. You do still have to make lifestyle changes though, eating healthier and lower calorie, exercising and getting your mind off of food.0

Well most people do not eat a ton of vegetables, the nonstarchy ones. Those were always free on ww. Fruit on the other hand is easy to overeat!2 -
I do understand where you’re coming from. I was a WW member “way back when” 40 years ago when they had you track your food like MFP does now almost. You knew how much protein, fruit, carbs, fat, etc. you were having. Then they started changing to fat/fiber and to points. Seemed like they were getting real “gimmicky” - like the grapefruit diet or something. They made so many of the foods now 0 calories (or free) because they’re trying to encourage people to have more protein. The reason they made fruit free was because a banana would cost more points than an Oreo or two. SO, they made fruit free to encourage people to have fruit. They felt like it worked so they followed suit with the protein....trying to encourage people to eat protein instead of other stuff less healthy that’ll cost points.
I’m not a big fan of all that, but that’s not the reason I go to WW anyway. And I never got on the Connect site either. When I first joined, it didn’t seem like that many people used it, so I just never bothered with it.
I go to the WW meetings for accountability - some 3rd party person who can weigh me and not be all judgey like some in my family. I usually don’t stay for the meetings, but did last week, and someone got started on weight loss surgery and how it was an “easy way out” and that you don’t “learn how to eat right”. One of my pet peeves - people who talk out of their “back side”. Anybody who thinks WLS is a “magic bullet” is seriously misled.
I come here to log food and visit the community boards.
Did you have wls? I track here and go to the meetings too for accountability and see my real results every week. I get discouraged at the slow progress on my own.0 -
I guess I'm a dual MFP and WW person. I did awesome on Smart Points, lost 50 lb in my first 6 mos. Then came Freestyle and I freestyled myself to a stall. A year later and I've only lost another 30 lbs (I know, I know). I signed up with MFP end of September when a fitness coach suggested I should probably add more protein to my diet. I needed the stats to track my macros and see where I was.
Since then, I've upped my protein intake (a regular snack is now 3oz FF yogurt and a scoop of protein powder - it makes a paste about the consistency of cookie dough. I don't like protein shakes) and can see better where the points/calories are going.
I don't plan on leaving WW, I really like the leader and the group I'm in. They're really welcoming and make a point of trying to make new people welcome. A very large gentleman joined and we all welcomed him. Our leader doesn't talk about recipes or cooking methods (she doesn't cook) so we focus on other things. I like the accountability of someone ELSE recording my weight (though I do have a bluetooth scale at home that links to MFP so "technically" I can have accountability there) and the "rah rah" when a milestone is hit.
My BF does most of the cooking and after listening to me say how many points thus and so is, talks about food in points terms.

Exactly what I found! While I ate what WW was telling me were "zero point foods" and I ate things like brown rice, a ton of fruit, corn, peas, etc., I wasn't losing any weight. When I switched to MFP and started looking at the calorie counts and skipping a lot of the "zeros" and replacing them with protein, I started dropping pounds.2 -
I lost 35 lbs on weight watchers 4 years ago but unfortunately the weight crept back on so decided to join WW again. I do not like freestyle and I have gained 2 lbs in 2 weeks. I only joined the online for 3 months and I will not be renewing.2

I have been doing MFP for a week and have lost more on here than I did on WW in 2 months. The problem with WW is I could eat 2 bananas and count it at zero points...but those are still calories. I was eating a crap ton of “zero point” foods and losing no weight. I already eat pretty healthy, but I tend to eat ALOT of healthy foods...which were all zero points. Example: I made a fruit salad the other day that was 200 calories, but on WW that would have been 0 points. I don’t know if I ever really had a deficit on WW. Plus I got so tired of eating the same foods ALL the time. I had a 400 cal breakfast this morning that was delicious...but would have been 21 points in WW...and I only got 27 a day!! All because WW counts anything with sugar as an astronomically high points food. Im happy here and am already seeing good results.6

I have done WW recently too & I do lose on it but I find it too restricting .. they say you can eat what you like & use the points .. but I always end up back on MFP . My only danger with mfp is that bad foods creep back in because I can eat them as part of calories ... really trying to eat more fruit & have more sensible dinners though.2

What are these "bad" foods you speak of?2

I just know I ate some normal Yoplait Light Strawberry yogurt for the first time in awhile. On WW I would eat fat free plain yogurt and sweeten it myself to save points. I haven’t had flavored yogurt in forever.2
