Wishing everyone the best. It was Oct 2014 when I started Keto and four years later my health continues to improve at the age of 67.
Dialing the carbs back to 50 grams daily is a good place to start if one wants to do Keto. Low carb is anything under 150 grams of carbs daily. I tried tapering down on carbs but that did not work well but stopping all foods containing added sugar and or any type of any grain worked for me (others have done it other ways). The first two weeks was hellish going off of a high carb way of eating for the prior 40 years but then the cravings started crashing fast and have stayed away for 4 years now.8 -
Welcome!! I’ve thought about trying Keto but haven’t taken the plunge yet. Hope things go well for you all!1

I’m also considering doing it. Would love to hear from others’ experiences. Is there a good thread in here to follow? I’m new to the forums.1

I've been keto for almost 7 weeks now and have lost 17 lb. I feel great. Happier, more energetic, focused. My skin looks great and I'm in real need of new clothes as my jeans need pulling up constantly haha.
I also haven't any desire for high carb foods like pasta, take away or sugary desserts.
Keto is great and you'll love the benefits. Starting out can be a bit tough, it effects individuals differently. Most go through the keto flu at different intensities. I was weak, had brain fog, tired, irritable and had heart palpitations for the first week or so. But the water weight loss kept me motivated (you'll lose weight rapidly at the start).
Once my body got used to using fat, I felt much better. Better than before I started. I currently lose 1-2 pounds a week.
One of my only concerns after that was toilet issues. I didn't have the feeling to go for a month. I didn't feel uncomfortable though and reading other peoples experiences eased my worries. Fats and proteins are digested and mostly absorbed in the stomach. Carbs are handled by the intestines. So taking less carbs means less solid waste. Most waste from food on keto is urinated. (This is what I found out anyway, could look into more)
When I finally had the urge to go it was a small amount and after that I was regular again, but always small amounts. I figured my gut needed the time to adjust to a completely new diet. So this may happen to you, but everyone is different.
If you are going to do intermediate fasting (IF), I'd suggest getting used to keto first with 3 meals a day. I got used to the routine before taking out a meal, then upping the amount of time before my first meal. I'm now at 1 meal a day.
There are many tasty recipes for keto. This includes desserts. Make sure you get a 0GI sweetener for these deserts though. I made a mistake on my first one thinking any old sweetener was fine. Blood sugar spike and drop is no fun and gives painful hunger several hours later when you'd normally be satisfied. I treat myself every 1-2 weeks to a keto dessert or sweet snack.
Anyway, that's all for now, hope my insight so far helps.6 -
I'll be slowly shifting to Keto. It's hard to be on such a strict diet when you live with someone who eats like garbage. Gonna give it a go!2

I am starting keto today. Keep it up. If you want a friend on here add me!1

Welcome! I hope you have lots of success with it. Don't forget to increase your sodium to 3000-5000 mg + a day to avoid the keto flu electrolyte imbalance.

Research in the news this week on how Keto/LCHF woes may lead to weight loss without cutting calories.

How a Low-Carb Diet Might Help You Maintain a Healthy Weight
Adults who cut carbohydrates from their diets and replaced them with fat sharply increased their metabolisms.
Nov. 14, 2018
"It has been a fundamental tenet of nutrition: When it comes to weight loss, all calories are created equal. Regardless of what you eat, the key is to track your calories and burn more than you consume.
But a large new study published on Wednesday in the journal BMJ challenges the conventional wisdom. It found that overweight adults who cut carbohydrates from their diets and replaced them with fat sharply increased their metabolisms. After five months on the diet, their bodies burned roughly 250 calories more per day than people who ate a high-carb, low-fat diet, suggesting that restricting carb intake could help people maintain their weight loss more easily.
The new research is unlikely to end the decades-long debate over the best diet for weight loss. But it provides strong new evidence that all calories are not metabolically alike to the body. And it suggests that the popular advice on weight loss promoted by health authorities — count calories, reduce portion sizes and lower your fat intake — might be outdated...."15 -
I've started and re-started keto-type eating (following the Plant Paradox program, which is pretty similar), but the longest I stuck with it was 5 days. I liked it after the first 2 days. I've dabbled with getting back into it, but haven't been able to fully re-commit. Hence, I've logged back into MFP for inspiration and support. Best wishes, everyone!3
