GOAL RE-EVALUATION
I had stated in an earlier post that my December goal was 100 miles. I'm thinking I should back that down to 75 and save 100 for January. I don't think I was taking all of the holiday obligations into account and feel 75 is more attainable.
I am teaming up for RUN THE YEAR 2019 (1008 miles each) - so my monthly goal for the coming year MUST be 100 miles a month. I could not commit to 2019 solo..8 -
still feeling miserable but my timer stopped and i got a little extra in last night5

Hm... I think I will go sunbathing...

Antarctic Marathon - if you don't finish in 5 hours, they leave your @$$!!! @PastorVincent, @mobycarp, @Tramboman, @_nikkiwolf_, and all of you other snow runners - This looks up your ally. It is only a mere $24k5 -
@PastorVincent Those of us who live in the northern climes do have a little warped sense of what constitutes beach weather.
@Beka3695 Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll pass. I only run in the snow 'cause I don't have a lot of options. I guess I could move to Hawaii...4 -

Ran outside today for the first time in a week! The weather finally cooperated a bit. It was 40 degrees but it was also windy and flurrying? I don’t understand MA weather lol. Anyways, for some reason I was just not feeling it today so I gave up trying to enjoy my run and went inside 🤷♀️

to put that into perspective, I can do a 21 day cruise taking in the Antarctic peninsula, the Falkland Islands (Malvinas if you are Argentinian), and South Georgia, seeing penguins, whales, dolphins, sea lions and albatrosses all for around $16,000 plus flights to Argentina. AND they'll bring me home again.13 -

My bank account isn't really up to that at the moment, but it will go on my "things to do after I win the lottery"-list
The one thing my bank account will have to put up with, however, are new running shoes. Thanks everyone who tried the funny drop test! Even if it sounds like it's not really conclusive, I've still decided that those three pair of shoes that have more than 500km now will have to be replaced in the long run . And I didn't buy any running shoes since December last year!
So I just ordered three new pairs of shoes, to have them ready when the others will be retired. Online, and all of them experiments, but I hope they'll be fine. One of them is the men's version of the Saucony Zealot ; since they are discontinued, and I cannot find the women's version in my size anymore anywhere. Supposedly the men's version is wider at the heel, I will have to see if I still love them as much as my current ones. For 45 Euro sale price, it's a risk I'm willing to take.

So I am doing some retail therapy by looking at new running shoes... no purchasing until I can actually try shoes on again but I found these and I think they are so cute - especially if one were running in a holiday race like the one I would normally run in December!
They are a bit pricey for 'holiday runners' but I think I would wear them everywhere for the entire month13 -
Morning all, thanks for the birthday wishes, I started work late because I was doing first aid training after work that went to 9pm so hubby made me breakfast in bed! That was pretty much it though lol.
I haven't run in 5 days, so today I went out again. Gentle 6k. Not the struggle I expected but not the easy run I hoped for. But thats all good. I've managed to gain a few kg while away - not sure how much cause I try not weigh myself too often but my jeans and uniform are definitely tight. Sigh.
So jumping back onto calorie deficit to lose a bit before Christmas.
It's at this time of year I really start thinking about my goal for the following year. I am going to add weights next year. I'm doing a streak for December, so minimum of 2k every day for the whole month. I'm tempted to see how long I can continue that next year. Will see. One thing I do want to do is lose the last couple of kg so I am a healthy weight. Im really close and should have got there this year but just didn't. So goal for 2019 is run 3 HM, run the Kerikeri Half under 2hrs (so 3 min 9sec faster, definitely possible) and lose around 7kg6 -
I'm finally caught up on the several hundred posts. Some great races and adventures by you folks.
One post hit me more than others, of course. @skippygirlsmom your update on Skip filled me with both heartache for you and Skip and anger for everyone else! wtf!! If there's anything worse than being bullied it's when your child is bullied. I'm in shock that teammates, roommates, and even an assistant coach, all supposedly adults, can act this way!! That assistant coach has no business being anywhere near a team! I hurt for you two and you two are in my prayers.
There was one point in your post I want to address. Tell Skip that leaving that poisonous situation is NOT letting them win! It's self preservation. A situation like that is so toxic that you need to remove yourself for your own physical and mental health. "They" did not win because they are still there and they are still the problem. Skip will recover and regroup and come back stronger than ever, and THAT's how she will win!
Skip's bad decisions? yeah, kids make bad decisions but that doesn't necessarily make them bad people. I've picked up one of my kids from a police station once, and at the time I was crushed/pissed/let down, but we got over it, learned from it, and it's a distant memory. This whole thing will be a distant memory in time, and your love and support for each other will get you through it. You two are lucky to have each other. Hugs to both of you.13 -
Did someone mention running in snow? Oh yeah, we run in snow! Winter is my favorite time of year for running and no amount of snow or cold will keep me inside. I absolutely love it!! And yes, I would love to run a marathon in Antarctica.
All of these pictures are from last winter.11 -
Non-running update - After a week of being in the boot, but still not weight-bearing I was finally able to get rid of the iWalk and the crutches on Thanksgiving day (and I was thankful for that!). At first it felt really strange putting weight on my foot and walking. It was like i had to retrain the brain-to-foot signal connection to get my foot and leg to move properly, and there was a tingly sensation in the bottom of my foot. For the first couple of hours I got around using a single crutch to help take some of the weight off my foot. Then it was a day of gingerly walking, and finally, walking was no issue.
I'm supposed to keep my boot on all the time but if I lay down to watch TV or something, I'll take it off to let it breathe, and I'd take it off to gently wash my foot in the tub. I grew tired of covering up the boot for showers so now I take it off for that too.
Last week I noticed I had some very noticeable pitting edema in my foot. It caused me a bit of concern and after 4 or 5 days of not getting better, I went in to have it looked it. The nurse was very frustrating because she was first waffling if I should even come in or not, then had no idea what to make of it, so she FINALLY get the surgeon in to take a look. He poked and prodded a bit and declared everything just fine. That's what I wanted to hear!
The orthopedic center is just a mile from my office. I took Uber to get to the appointment (my first time using Uber!) but after the Doc declared me ok, and not wanting to spend $7 more dollars getting back to work I decided to walk back to the office. I wasn't dressed for the cold and wind (not gloves or hat) so it was a cold walk but getting outside and walking that far felt WONDERFUL!!! It really picked up my spirits. Unfortunately the cushioning in the boot sucks and and my heel was pretty sore by the time I got back.
I have my final check with the surgeon in 8 days, and will be boot free at that point. I'm very eager to hear how quickly he thinks I can get back into longer distance walking. I have "training plan" already mapped out until I can run, but I need to find out what my limits will be. I'm planning on starting with 30 minute walks for the first week, increasing from there and getting to 3 hour walks on the weekend before I can start running.
It's 50 days until I can run again and I'll need to know how quickly I can ramp that up as well. Again, I have a training plan worked out to ramp up to my 50 mile race in April, but I have no idea if that's feasible. I'm prepared to hike as much of that race as I need to.

Biked to work (and back). I went the long way to stay mainly on bike paths; drivers here are crazy. I might go back out for a ride tomorrow to knock that monthly goal out

@7lenny7 tingling sensation is probably minor nerves damaged from where they cut into your foot to get to the tendon. Nerves are weird after surgery and radiate sensation all over the place. Should sort itself eventually.
@Avidkeo happy belated birthday!
@mbaker566 good to hear you're feeling enough better to run! Hope you feel the rest of the way better soon.
5k and that's November for me, tomorrow is a lifting day and Friday is a rest day before St Jude 5k race on Saturday. My goals this November were to survive my first half marathon and come back in time to get some speed work in before St Jude. Since the hip which started hurting during my half feels better now, and I had a 5k PR at my Turkey Trot, I'm satisfied on both fronts.
It was so cold this morning! If I hate two things it's cold and mornings. Since St Jude gun time is 7 am I wanted to get at least one morning run in, just so on race day my body wouldn't think I had actually lost my mind. The ridiculous thing is, now, at 2 pm, the time I usually run, it's 50 F and glorious running weather. This morning at 7 am it was 24 degrees with a windchill of 20, which is almost as cold as it ever gets here. Morale, spectacularly low. I even contemplated the dreadmill. But then I got out there and of course once I started running I was fine.
Brilliant sunlight on the lake. We saw three very large bucks, one with the biggest rack I've ever seen locally. We often see does but rarely see bucks, so I'm not sure these ones were local, especially since one of them refused to yield the trail and just stood there facing us. We came to a stop and were thinking we were going to have to turn back before he finally went into the woods. Also, a great blue heron was standing straight upright, five feet tall, with his head stretched all the way up, right next to the walking path and nowhere near the water, like a guy waiting for a bus. We went by him within touching distance and he just stood there. No idea what he was doing, never seen a heron act like that.
The petting zoo at the Christmas village means the whole lake smells like camel.
The best part about running in the cold is that other people think you are totally badass. Other runners give you the special nod, people in passing cars stare, neighbors comment about how impressed they are.11 -

I had a great 3.8 mile run at lunch today. Today it was warmer and windier than yesterday, but I just wore shorts and a tank top and it was still a really good run. I was a little slower than yesterday, but 20 mph winds will slow me down and I wasn't as slow as I thought I would be. It is supposed to be even warmer tomorrow and be in the 50's before work, so I think I will get up early and run then. I do like running before work, I just don't really like running when it is colder than about 47F so since I'm not training for anything at the moment I am going to run more in temperatures I like if I can.
I am almost at my goal. I should have run just a bit further today, but since I was on my lunch break I really did not have time. I will probably set a lower goal for next month. December will be pretty hectic with the holidays plus my nephew's wedding and my son's college graduation. I know there are at least 2 long runs that I will miss and I'm not sure that I will be able to run them on alternate days. I really do love the holidays, but I also find this to be the most stressful time of the year and I want my running to be a stress relief and not something that I am stressing about because I might not meet my goal.
