Had unexpected company so missed my run... it was 22 degrees which would have meant dreadmill or use toe warmers. So I guess I saved on both electricity and buying warmers this way. *always look for the bright side?*5

I don't know if anyone else read this article in Runner's World on the new physical activity guidelines for adults but they haven't really changed much. What really got me was the line in bold!
'Experts still recommend that adults log at least 150 minutes to 300 minutes moderate-intensity (say, like brisk walking) each week, or 75 minutes to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, like running. An equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity would work, too.
The guidelines still continue to emphasize the importance of a balanced exercise routine. You should be shooting for two or more days of strength training a week, too.
You’re probably already familiar with those numbers, but they definitely deserve repeating, since the majority of Americans are falling short of those guidelines. In fact, 50 percent of Americans don’t meet the recommended 150 to 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity and 30 percent of people report no physical activity at all'
"30% report no physical activity at all" is kind of sad...

Has anybody ever heard of the "drop test" to see if running shoes should be replaced? I just read this on the polar blog ( https://www.polar.com/blog/when-to-replace-running-shoes-toss-your-trainers/ ).3. HOLD THE SHOE 4–5” ABOVE A HARDWOOD SURFACE AND DROP IT
If it rocks back and forth or front to back from a gentle drop for more than half a second, that’s a sign the cushioning isn’t bouncing back the way it once was. The shoe has probably started to depress, and can alter your biomechanical form.
E.t.a. of course I want to buy new shoes
But I'm genuinely curious if this is a reliable test or not2 -

Did not have my act together all day today. Only had 30 minutes to spend on the treadmill. I wanted to get to 3 miles but despite punching up the treadmill speed a few times, the pace and mileage on Garmin didn't change much. In contrast to the other day when Garmin gave me my fastest 5k time ever on the treadmill and I know that was not correct either. I don't know why it is all over the place. Anyway, a run completed. Tomorrow is a tight schedule as well, so it may be a rest day or just a very short run if I feel like I need to keep up my current streak.
@_nikkiwolf_ I've never heard of that drop test but will have to try it now with my new shoes compared to my old ones.

Real goal: stop with the walk intervals, start rebuilding base without reinjuring me.
I ran tonight!
I went for a very short jaunt tonight in my new trail shoes. Legs felt very stiff and heavy as expected. Right ankle mostly okay. It's yapping at me a bit right now so I'll ice it in a minute and remember to tape it next time. Left foot is still a bit sore in the heel & arch. Not as bad as it was.
I'll run again Thursday, a bit longer, and re-evaluate.

Do you people run when it snows? I find even walking a challenge, it feels so slippery under my feet...
Personally I use the treadmill when the roads are snow covered or icy. At my age I don’t want to risk falling and breaking something. I can take the cold into the mid 20’s unless it’s windy. So between these two, the treadmill and I spend a lot of time together. Yuck.0 -

So I have a pair of BRAND NEW SHOES never worn.
I have a pair of shoes with many times the recommended number of miles on them.
They both are Saucony Ride 10s.
I dropped them both dozens of times, and sometimes one bounced around more than the other, and sometimes the other bounced around more. I could not come up with a good conclusion just by watching them bounce.5 -
AHHH haven't been able to read anything for a few days apart from the odd skim read. Nothing to report because I haven't been running in a few days and eaten WAY too much food.
Oh yeah, its my birthday today as well.
Just working out my km goal for December, and deciding to do a streak for the whole month of December, starting on the 1st. Which also coincides with the beginning of a virtual run challenge I am doing - 12 days of Christmas, which I signed up for 90k in 12 days... should be interesting! Hip is getting better so I WILL go for a run tomorrow. I really need to stretch my legs!11 -
Happy Birthday @Avidkeo!1

Happy Birthday @Avidkeo !
@_nikkiwolf_ I'll have to try that shoe test later.
@sarahthes I'm glad you got to run!

Nominal November mileage goal: 160 miles
Real Goals: Avoid injury. Run well in the Pete Glavin XC series. Have fun at the Syracuse Half and Race with Grace 10K. Build base toward the start of Boston training.
Today's notes – It drizzled snow all day long, and started to stick to surfaces about 4 PM. So of course I drove across town in rush hour to go to club practice, since I'm not supposed to do speed work on my recovering hamstring anyway. Runners aren't always totally rational.
Ran the 2 mile warmup around campus. The roads weren't bad. The track was coated with snow, and reports were that spikes would be recommended for speed work there. Didn't matter, I was just socializing a little and putting in some easy miles. Picked up a running companion for another 3 miles or so; my easy pace is faster than Bill's, but he was okay pushing a little while not working as hard as the assigned speed workout. It's going into his off season anyway.
Called it quits after just a short run. The objective isn't to prove how tough I am, it's to get healthy. I may not be able to run hard right now, but being restricted to running easy is a whole heck of a lot better than not being able to run at all.

Spoke too soon! Got a late night run in on the dreadmill in my brandy new shoes. 7.0mph for 1 hour at 4% grade (roughly equivalent to 1500 feet of elevation, without any downhill)11 -

@Avidkeo Happy birthday! Possibly late by now but that's all your fault for living in the future :-p
Nice short run this morning, only 5 kilometres on Wednesdays. Still get such a kick out of that 'only'. I've come to the conclusion whoever it was who said running doesn't get easier you just get faster had a point, even though I really made a conscious effort to slow right down and run really easy this morning I was still faster than before. Sunday will be my first and only 10 miler before my race and I'm worried if I don't slow down I'll suffer! Ah well we'll see, I guess I can always stick more walk breaks in if I have to.

Happy birthday @Avidkeo! Hope you had an awesome one.
I just tried the shoe drop test and would have to say it was inconclusive. Maybe one old pair rocked more than the new pair, but another didn't.
Snowy out there today! Looks like I officially missed end of fall yard clean up time and we are just going to be snowed in from here on.6 -
GOAL RE-EVALUATION
I had stated in an earlier post that my December goal was 100 miles. I'm thinking I should back that down to 75 and save 100 for January. I don't think I was taking all of the holiday obligations into account and feel 75 is more attainable.
I am teaming up for RUN THE YEAR 2019 (1008 miles each) - so my monthly goal for the coming year MUST be 100 miles a month. I could not commit to 2019 solo..8 -
still feeling miserable but my timer stopped and i got a little extra in last night5

Hm... I think I will go sunbathing...
LOL or not.6 -

@PastorVincent Those of us who live in the northern climes do have a little warped sense of what constitutes beach weather.
@Beka3695 Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll pass. I only run in the snow 'cause I don't have a lot of options. I guess I could move to Hawaii...4 -

Ran outside today for the first time in a week! The weather finally cooperated a bit. It was 40 degrees but it was also windy and flurrying? I don’t understand MA weather lol. Anyways, for some reason I was just not feeling it today so I gave up trying to enjoy my run and went inside 🤷♀️

to put that into perspective, I can do a 21 day cruise taking in the Antarctic peninsula, the Falkland Islands (Malvinas if you are Argentinian), and South Georgia, seeing penguins, whales, dolphins, sea lions and albatrosses all for around $16,000 plus flights to Argentina. AND they'll bring me home again.13
