Today I got to run 3.98 miles. I actually found myself enjoying the challenge of putting together my outfit for today’s run. I haven’t set myself a schedule this week but I am trying to keep from having more than one day off in a row. It's a little warmer today - 24 degrees - but was plenty windy going around the lake. It started snowing just as I was on the home stretch, but nothing heavy. We might get a half-inch or so over the next several hours, probably not enough to break out the trail shoes again.
I broke down and bought two pairs of base-layer pants from REI’s Cyber Monday sale. I am weak. I’ve realized that I really can only count on myself to wash my workout clothes a couple of times a week, so three of each item that needs washing seems to be the sweet spot. I thought about buying another couple of pairs of the SmartWool tights, but I don't love them so much that I wanted to pay full price over trying out some other options at half off.
Today’s outfit consisted of 15 pieces:
1. Shoes - $100-120
2. Crew socks - $10-15
3. Ankle socks over the crews - $8-10
4. Leg warmers - $8-10
5. Capri pants - $20-30
6. Shorts over the pants - $20-30
7. Butt-coat - $70
8. Sports bra - $15-20
9. Long sleeve tech shirt - $15-20
10. Long sleeve cotton shirt - $15-20
11. Windbreaker - $65
12. Sleeves (pulled off after a mile or two but glad to have at the start) - $10
13. Gloves - $1-2
14. Headband - $10-15
15. Buff over neck, lower face, and head - $1-2
$368 at the low estimate, but at least I didn't spend that all at once. “Cheap hobby” my sweet aunt Fanny.
And for all that I wouldn’t have minded adding a tank under it all - could have used a touch more core heat. I could also use better gloves - the cheap wool ones I end up taking off and putting back on a couple times per run. This is the first time I’ve worn “street” clothes to run, but I thought that a long-sleeve t-shirt might hit the right balance for a mid-layer, and I was right!
Wearing shorts over capris under a butt-coat didn’t totally solve my cold-butt problem, but it continued to be an improvement. It wasn’t especially uncomfortable, either, which had been a concern, and was mostly hidden under the butt-coat so not any more ridiculous looking than the butt-coat itself, which, yes, was also a concern. The half-dozen other runners I passed didn’t look nearly as clown-like as I did, so either I win or they do.
I'll hit 50 miles this month but only just, and miss my goal by about 25 miles. Given everything that happened this month, I'm happy with that. At my usual pace that's somewhere over 500 minutes of vigorous exercise in the month, or 125+ minutes per week, right towards the higher end of the recommended physical activity. December I intend to get back into lifting and then I'll live forever, right?
@Beka3695: My husband and I occasionally daydream about weird-*kitten* luxury vacations. Our current front-runner is the Atacama Desert in Chile (as seen in Quantum of Solace), but a marathon in Antarctica sounds amazing!

Since we're talking winter running, and we have a lot of folks who weren't with us last winter, I'm going to plug these again, pull-up golf mitts.
These are essentially fleece mittens, but with no thumb, and an opening on the palm side to let you stick your fingers out if need be, or even pull them back if your hands are getting too warm. I wear these in the coldest weather over my normal running gloves. They allow better temperature regulation (my hands alternate between cold and warm while I run), allow me to pull them back to access zippers or pockets, and they extend up my arm enough to keep my wrists warm. With no separate thumb, my thumbs easily stays warm as well.
I see Amazon currently has these between $6 and $11 with free shipping, depending on size. That's a nice price. Turtle Fur also makes a version of these which are probably higher quality, but I've not tried them.

Nice! I apparently have weirdly warm hands so I’ll try these without another pair of gloves underneath. They look like they might be better for ventilation than the cheap gloves I’ve been wearing, too. Sadly, I will have to wait a week for the smalls to come back in stock. Life is hard sometimes.0 -
I just bought a pair of the Turtle Fur version. I have large hands and I'm hoping that the turtle fur XL are a bit bigger than the L version of what I linked to.1

This morning at 7 am it was 24 degrees with a windchill of 20, which is almost as cold as it ever gets here. Morale, spectacularly low. I even contemplated the dreadmill. But then I got out there and of course once I started running I was fine.
The best part about running in the cold is that other people think you are totally badass. Other runners give you the special nod, people in passing cars stare, neighbors comment about how impressed they are.

I just bought a pair of the Turtle Fur version. I have large hands and I'm hoping that the turtle fur XL are a bit bigger than the L version of what I linked to.
Somehow i think "Turtle fur" and "pocket nuts".... Would be a marketing gold mine. @shanaber ? Pocket fur? Turtle nuts???? Turtle shaped furry pocket for your snacks... Gah! Awesome! Make it runner friendly!5 -

I just got over that! It stayed around for 13 days. I still have a slight runny nose and some coughing in the morning, but at least I feel human again. Take it easy, it will get better!

So I am doing some retail therapy by looking at new running shoes... no purchasing until I can actually try shoes on again but I found these and I think they are so cute - especially if one were running in a holiday race like the one I would normally run in December!
They are a bit pricey for 'holiday runners' but I think I would wear them everywhere for the entire month
@shanaber I never realized that I need a pair of ugly Christmas sweater running shoes until right now...

8 miles this evening. It was harder than it should have been. Probably because of the 15mph wind. But it was ok. The usual 1st mile was quite a bit faster than usual. Don't know where that came from. But at least I went past my 100 mile goal.

Okay, since I'm still sort of running wounded I definitely shouldn't sign up for a 5K trail race in mid-January, right?

@shanaber @amymoreorless I just ordered them from Zappos. I usually buy from Brooks but they sold out in like 2 minutes. I figured everywhere else did but for some reason, I googled today and Zappos still had them. I can't wait for Christmas races!5

Just a short pre-strength training warm-up today. The gym got all new treadmills! Much needed given almost half were not working last week (including the one with frequent emergency stops that kept trying to throw me off).

And that is the real reason we run outside in the winter.
We are really limited right now - 2 days of freezing rain - started as ice pellets turned into rain then back to ice pellets and just to make the trails and roads more of a challenge it transitioned to snow.
Picture a layer of ice pellets that will break away like marbles under your foot sitting on top a layer of ice covered in snow. Just about dreadmill conditions. Most of our little club decided it was a good day week for cross training at the pool. So probably no runs for the rest of the week.
Usually we are -10 to -15C with lots of clear skies and bright sunshine at this time of year, so once the trails/roads get compacted or plowed in a few days they are fantastic. This promises at least 1-2 weeks of nasty conditions.
@7lenny7 glad to hear you are seeing a progressive in your healing and recovery. The K ster must be getting cabin fever from not running the trails.
Looking forward to see Santa Shuffle Fun Run Pictures with the special collection of Christmas Themed clothing. Now if you can find a hat/toque with LED flashing lights3
