Hey im looking at the sign up for my next HM (not till ebd of June) and I see they have merch for sale. Is it worth getting the merch? These seem to be highish end technical shirts and socks (thermatec and drymax)0

0112-5k total-31.2k, goal-100k
5k dreadmill yesterday. I'm getting really behind in mileage, might have to do something drastic soon.
Upcoming races:
04.15 Beijing International Running Festival (HM) (registration not open yet)
05.13 Beijing Tongzhou Half Marathon (registration not open yet)10 easy miles this afternoon. Was a short 'long run'. Last one before marathon. Felt a little rough the first 4 miles, but was trying to find the right fueling intervals. Think I will go with 1/2 GU at 4 miles, then 1/2 every 3 miles. Seemed to work pretty well. Ahhhhhh, one week away!!
I have a question - how does one take half a GU and save the rest of it? (or do you toss it?) I always end up getting it all over my fingers, and clothes, and pack, and everything else in sight...I'm getting ready to volunteer at a local winter ultramarathon race tonight. It's 40 miles and you can run, bike or ski. My shift is 4am to 1130 am.
As I get ready it occurs to me... I've forgotten how to dress for winter when I'll be standing still. I guess I'll bring twice as much as I think I'll need and store the extra in my truck.
My job is to help at the finish line and to help pack up when it's over.
One thing that comes to mind is foot warmers. I spent a few hours standing around in winter last year for an event. The rest of me felt fine but I couldn't feel my toes at all after the first hour.

Not a fan of Thermatech (haven’t used it but had a good look at it in the shops and it didn’t look that great quality), but love, love, love Drymax socks.
Which half are you looking at?2 -

I have no knowledge of "thermatec" but in general...
Do you need more tech clothing of the kind they are selling? Is the price they are charging good? Do you have the spare disposable money right now? If so, then yes it is worth it.2 -

I just open it, take half, and fold up the used end and stick it back in my flipbelt. Doesn't cause much of a mess at all (although I do end up licking my fingers for the next quarter mile or so )4 -

January Total: 62k
January Goal: 100k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen.
Another pretty morning to run. Two inches of fresh snow overnight made some of the footing a bit treacherous, but just slowed down a little and tried to pay attention to staying centered.

Had a podiatrist appointment earlier this week. He reminded me that I'm a "nerve-y person" in my feet. Oh ya, forgot that. Official diagnosis is Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. Cortisone shot, and a specialized brace to wear when I an active, plus I am on a steroid pack now, follow up in a few weeks. He said I can continue to run as normal, though. With that, I have decided to modify my race schedule goals somewhat: (bolded are the ones changed/added)
1. Feb 24 - Tampa Fl - Gasparilla 15K
2. Mar 22 - St Pete, Fl - Hero's Twilight 5/10K
4. Apr 12 - Bradenton, Fl - Manatee County Sheriffs Office Torch Run 5K **** Last planned race in Fl, w/the agency I'm retiring from earlier that month AND a few days before I move out of state. Will be emotional, I'm sure!
5. May 18 - Lake Geneva WI - Super Hero Shuffle 5/10K
6. Sep 14 - Lake Geneva, WI - Zooma Great Lakes HM
7. Nov 3 - Chicago, Il - Hot Chocolate 15K
January goal had been changed as well: down to a 15K training plan & get back on schedule, foot withstanding.
Sharing not because I think people actually care, but because I share & put it out there, helps keep me accountable.

A trail run was not in the cards today (driving to a trail would have been unwise), but my friend and I put on trail shoes anyway and ran through the snow in town instead! We blazed a trail in 4-5 inch deep snow on the ped/bike trails down to the National Mall and to our pleasant surprise the Mall/monuments were plowed/shoveled. We cut the run a tad short because the wind was making the snow hit our faces in a very painful way, and hopped on the Metro to go back up to my neighborhood. Now time for brunch! That is so mind-numbingly true that I could scream over it every year - but to be fair, I think a lot of the blame falls on the fact that so many people move here from different places. Military personnel formally stationed in Arizona know zip about snow driving, just as an example. I just stay home and leave the roads to the plows.
I’m not even going to TRY to run tomorrow because some people will put down ice preventer and it’ll refreeze overnight into a sheet of ice instead of snow. There were already some refreeze slicks I had to avoid when I went this morning. I would like to run while the snow is falling, but not so much in the aftermath!
@LadySaton It makes total sense to me that drivers here don't adjust well to the snow. It doesn't snow here often and so many people are from totally snowless climates. I just want to avoid them/an accident in my own car. But that said, running in trail shoes (with thick Smartwool running socks) was pretty pleasant! I barely complained Arlington Mem Bridge was a mess but otherwise things were ok!

Did a (quite breezy!) 4 miles today, which was more than I was aiming for.
I had a few beers yesterday so woke up feeling not quite so fresh this morning and realllllly didn't feel like going out, but I thought of the 20 mile goal I'd set myself here and kicked myself off the sofa and in to my trainers!
I decided to turn of my app updates so I had no idea how far I'd gone or what my pace was, and just went by how I felt - I have to say the first half of my run felt like it flew by! So will probably do that again on days when I'm not quite feeling it.
06Jan - 2.8 miles (outdoor)
07Jan - 1.4 miles (treadmill)
10Jan - 1.5 miles (treadmill)
11Jan - 2 miles (treadmill)
13Jan - 4 miles (outdoor)
Total so far: 11.7 miles of 20 (woo! less than half to go)9 -
newbie here
Jan 1 : 1.5 =1.5/30 miles, walking 5.6 miles (after run) note: run took 19.13 min
Jan 2: 3.02= 4.52/30 miles, walking 11.13 miles (after run): run took 37.02 min 👍improvment
Jan 3: rest day= 4.52/30 miles, walking 4.11 (after run) I think I pushed myself too hard too fast for a non seasoned new runner the day before. My legs were sore up until last night.
Jan 4: 1.91= 6.43/30 miles, walking 4.22 (after run): no time improvement
Jan 5: 1.5= 7.93 miles, walking 7.47 (after run)
Jan 6: 1.5= 9.43/30, walking 4.5 (after run)
Jan 7: 2.90= 12.33/30, walking 11.19(after run) run took 20.17 👎 today I was lethargic and not feeling it, i consider it a win that I did it at all.
Jan 8 1.5= 13.83, walking 10 (after run)
Jan 9 1.5= 15.33, walking 8.19 (after run)
Jan 10 1.5= 16.83/30, walking 3.97 (after run)
Jan 11 1.5= 18.33/30 walking 7.37 (after run)

I ran a 5k today! My pace was under 13 minutes per mile. I know it’s slow but it was great for me and I didn’t come in last 😁

Faster than everyone on the couch! Awesome job! My miles are still short and super slow but progress is progress. Great job!10 -
I ran 5 miles today. Wanted at least 6 but got a cramp on the back of my knee that just would not go away so cut it short. Did some yoga and stretching and it feels better but still really tight.14

Total of 2.69 miles today. Used my inhaler that I've been neglecting before I started and felt (and still feel) light headed, though I'm not sure if that's what caused it or if I'm coming down with something. The first mile was slow and my legs felt SO heavy, and with my head the way it was, I just decided to cut it short and walk. Well after a few minutes of that, I felt better so I ran another mile which felt okay but not great. Walked the last bit home, changed some layers, left the dogs and went back out for a quick .4 mile loop for speed... slower than the last time I did that but an average 10 minute pace which was nice to see.9

Yesterday was a rest day. Well, sort-of. I cleaned the house from top-to-bottom, washed the dog, finished the yard work, went grocery shopping, etc. It was a very "unrestful" rest day. I am finding myself with all this excess energy to burn off this week. I don't know what to do with it since I am tapering and can't run long.
I still need to do my FBS video after work. I did not have time after my run this morning.
Oh, I can finally see the weather for the Miami Marathon on my weather app. It is going to be HOT and HUMID. Whaaaa....

I don't wear a rain jacket due to the "sweating to death" issue. I will wear a hat when running in the rain to keep the drops out of my face. I also live Texas. It does not snow. It might get below freezing for a few hours at night in January.
If it is super cold rainy (and I am running a race 1/2 marathon or longer), I will sport an uber-trendy garbage bag rain "jacket". It is easy to throw away after a few miles. A small pocket-sized disposable rain poncho works as well.9 -

Congratulations! Speed will come later, that’s a fantastic achievement on its own! 🎉7 -
@hoshaugh73 Good luck! Make sure you come back and tell us how the race went!!
@dreamer12151 I care! I really like seeing what races people are running and how their progress is going. It provides some vicarious encouragement and I feel you about the accountability. It's the same reason I put a list out there. Somehow makes it more real!6 -

I have a cheap TJ Max find windbreaker type that is a Columbia brand. It’s nice for mist, wind and drys fairly fast or is at least good at keeping a wet layer away from you. It’s water resistant not proof. 8$. The hood works well.
For a water proof layer I run in a regular rain jacket from Magellan. I think it’s an Academy brand similar to the north face brand, a copy cat. At copy cat prices. Prob 20-30$. Pro is that i can use it anytime, drawback is that it’s not meant for running and the hood is imperfect for running. This may be retired or replaced once i decide i need a real rain running jacket.
And my newest addition is the Nike aerolayer. I got it for warmth not realizing it’s water proof or repellent (not sure yet). It doesn’t have a hood. It’s Nike. Think it was $120-ish. Sleeves are long with thumb holes, so that nice.
I found a jacket for dh at tjmaxx. It was a real find, ~20-30$. It’s a Nike brand, I can’t say which one it is. It just says “Nike pro training”. Dh says it’s too warm, but it is designed for rain. It’s light. Probably something I’d like to have to replace my “rain” running jacket. “Too warm” for me just means I can shed a layer of two and won’t work for spring runs.
Nice question @workaholic_nurse ( I need a new rain jacket).3 -
@noblsheep - I used to keep them in a snack sized ziplock. (Regular ziplock width but only like 2 inches deep). It seemed to contain them well, and even if I did do something dumb, it minimized how much of a mess it would make. My friend and I would just split one when running together. But when alone I always had half’s to deal with.0

Run speciality retail worker here! My favorite jacket that we sell is the Brooks LSD jacket. I have a reflective version which has reflective detailing front and back, but there are non-reflective versions that are less expensive. It's a thin shell, but it's fairly breathable, and I'll wear it over a t-shirt, long-sleeve or half-zip, depending on temperature. It's my go-to jacket for rain (and snow!), especially if I'm running at night. You can find the jacket here (and it's on sale!): https://www.brooksrunning.com/en_us/search?q=LSD jacket
Other popular options: Nike Flash Hooded jacket (https://www.runningwarehouse.com/Nike_Womens_Flash_Hooded_Shield_Print_Jacket/descpage-NIWFSP1.html) and I've heard amazing review of the Patagonia Houdini jacket (https://www.runningwarehouse.com/Patagonia_Womens_Houdini_Jacket/descpage-PHJ01W1.html).

For interested parties:
Applications for the NYC Marathon start tomorrow!
I am trying my luck at the lottery. The likelihood of me running a qualifying time in Miami is less than a snowballs chance in the 7th level of hell during a heat wave. LOL

Chilly Chili 5k today lived up to it's name for the most part. When I woke up it was 1 degree outside so I was kind of dreading it. But the race didn't start until 1:00 so there was time to warm up and it did - to about 19 degrees or so. But it was very sunny and not windy at all so it was actually a pretty nice day for a run. I was plenty warm and ended up taking my mittens and the thin gloves I had under them off. And I really wanted to take my neck warmer off but it was too much work. I volunteered to help out at the race day packet pickup and registration so did about an hour of that and then went out to the start at the last minute - good call not to stand outside in the cold more than a couple of minutes before the race.
The race is really fun and I just planned to run it easy with my friend, especially given my sore glutes from yesterday's Spartan workout. The whole first mile of the course is up hill, gradually at first and then getting a bit steeper at the end. After cresting that hill it is such a relief that the second hill around mile 2 didn't seem bad at all. The rest is mostly downhill so a good opportunity to catch your breath and cruise. The streets were mostly clear, but some snow and slush remained in the shady parts. I was a bit nervous about black ice but they had done a good job making sure the downhill parts especially were clear.
My time was fine, nothing too remarkable but I was happy enough with it given the hill. I was definitely feeling the leg/glute fatigue but the second half of the run felt pretty good, and the last mile was my fastest.
The party after was good and there were several samples of chili to try and vote on for the best chili. I liked all the ones I tried - I was pretty hungry at that point so I would really loved a whole bowl. There were also some small samples of local vodka and gin - and there was some lemonade so we made a couple of tiny cocktails as well.
@debrakgoogins congrats on your 5k today, too!
