Stay with pace group for my (hopefully reasonable) goal time for the first 3k. It's flat here and goes past a large concentration camp, which always feels weird to me. On training runs, I've actually stopped there for my own moment of silence, but not tonight - I also think that living life to the fullest, running and loving it, in the face of all that evil, may be one if the best responses. Where was I? Oh yes, kilometer 3. When it starts going downhill towards the beer factory I can speed up if I like, then try to keep a steady pace until kilometer 8. If at any point the pace group catches up to me, I need to do my best to stay with them. If necessary I can entertain myself with jokes about the *interesting* shape of the route. Starting at kilometer 8 is a nasty hill that will claim a number of runners. I want to nail the hill & highway exit ramp, and get to the top with the energy to drive it home to the finish just within my goal time. I'm not planning on a PR, based on recent training. Then I can claim my food and head home.
One thing to consider, If you run out of energy, you can always just roll down the other side of the hill, allowing your legs to rest.9 -
Non-running update...
My 15 year old son's girlfriend was over for dinner last night and said to Tim (after I left the room when she thought I was out of earshot -as if) "I like your dad, he's cool."
I think that is a win for the parental units!19 -
I talked about running with my mom last night.
Honestly I sorta feel like running in our current weather is actually a bit less crazy than running 34 laps of the indoor track, which is my plan for about an hour from now.10 -
@avidkeo I’ve also got an orange tabby cat and we decided to name him Fanta! Some of our other choices were Simba, Dorito, Cheeto, Pumpkin, Mango, and Nemo! Congratulations on the addition to the family, he’s absolutely precious ❤️7

2-1 7k easy
2-2 7k easy
February Total: 14k
February Goal: 100k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen.
Hips were a little grumbly last night and this morning, so I tried to run a little easier than yesterday. Ended up with the exact same time. Might have seemed easier because the temperature was up to 25 degrees F. Saw one robin; heard a couple of cardinals singing -- Punxsutawney Phil is spot on yet again.

Thank you for all the tips for my pain everyone! I was going to run today but I think I'll try and implement some of y'alls advice and see how I feel tomorrow.4

Today called for my long run. Because I postponed my Thursday run for Friday, my legs were still pretty sore today which made today’s run a little sucky, which I’ll keep in mind for future weeks.
February runs:
2/1: 3.5 miles
2/2: 5 miles
Cumulative total for February: 8.5/55 or 63.5 miles7 -
First trail race done! Turns out trail in this neck of the woods means mostly unpaved road and crushed granite, so really nice trail. No mud pits or river beds or tree jumping required. It was upper 50's, humid, and drizzling at race time.
I did about a half mile warm up and decided my light long sleeve layer was too much even though it felt cold with the humidity. Even though the trail was really nice, I was glad I wore trail shoes as it has rained a lot here the last couple of weeks and the ground it just saturated. Shoes definitely got dirty and my feet might have been too cold in my road shoes.
The crowd was pretty small and I heard a guy say it was much more crowded in previous years. He seemed to think the weather with a threat of rain scared some people doing the shorter distances off. There is a 50k, 20 mile, 10 mile, and 5k as a part of this race. The 5k group was really small.
I turned up my pace at the 2nd mile and was able to keep it up to the finish, with my first sub 30 minute 5k (29.42)!! I was really happy with my time and the race seems awesome, so next year I'll have to do one of the longer distances.
And they had tacos and beer at the finish! Texans ♥️ tacos! But really, doesn't everyone?
And the bling!

I was successful in getting my 10 mile long run in this morning. My knee felt okay, didn't have any of the twinging where it felt like it was going to give out that I did yesterday. Still a little tender and definitely told me I was done at 10 miles. Started the long run at 8 this morning instead of our usual 7 am and it felt so good to have a little extra sleep-in time and start in the full light of day. We are warming up today by quite a lot, although it said 2 degrees when I started, and ended up in upper teens. I'm looking forward to walking the dog later in above-freezing temps. Monday we are supposed to make it to 52 F, which is a crazy almost 70 degree swing from where we were yesterday.
Will need to get to my pull-up challenge workout later. Much of the challenge may be assembling my new pull-up bar.9 -
@martaindale Great race! Congratulations on a sub 30 min 5K!

@martaindale Great job, teammate!!
Sub 30 on a trail run is a super accomplishment!4 -
Not a bad 'long' run. It was in the upper 50's, little windy, drizzling, and slippery. That's probably why it felt harder than it should have been, but just tried to keep it consistent. After the 1st mile warm up, the next 9 miles were within 7 seconds of each other.
Pretty good way to start off February.
@martaindale Great race! Way to go breaking 30 minutes for a trail 5K. As a fellow Texan, yes, I LOVE all kinds of tacos, and those look soooooo good!9 -
I’m so grateful for all the inspiration from all of you—and am finally back in for 40 miles this month. I have a 6-day trip through NYC (work)/MA (family) in the middle, and will be hoping not to lose too much ground. Running here in the PNW doesn’t acclimate me for snow and ice, so my hope is for dry ground and/or treadmill availability for that.
Started off the month with a big old “rest” (12-hour workday) yesterday, but I’m planning to get out for 5 miles in an hour or so.
Also, I switched to Strava from Runkeeper in the beginning of January—I’d stuck with Runkeeper so long because my 70-year old dad was using it and running, and we live across the country from each other, so that’s been a nice connection. Now he’s gone all Apple Watch on me, though, so I’m moving on! But it means I’ll go find this group on Strava! Edited to add—I just looked for details on how to find the group, but couldn’t find them—any tips?
Happy racing to everyone who’s racing this weekend!7 -
2/1 - rest
2/2 - 8.05 km
8.05/68 km
It is currently -20C with a -30C windchill so I decided to experiment and run on the indoor track while my boys had their swimming lessons.
35 laps later and I got my 8km. It was definitely an interesting experience and an option I will keep in mind for the future. I found it very easy to maintain a consistent pace and counting down the number of laps remaining was very motivating once I was past the halfway point. Weaving around walkers who were meandering 3 abreast was probably the most challenging part.
Also, as I mentioned to my coach, it was kind of climate training for my May race because of the high humidity from the pool. So that was an extra bonus.
2019 Races:
1/1/19 Resolution Run (51:54)
5/5/19 BMO Vancouver Marathon (Half)
8/17/19 Edmonton Marathon13 -
Had to share this here. It is pricy for a foam roller but seems like it would be amazing!

Has anyone tried it?2 -
