@kgirlhart Congratulations on your great half. Well done.
@MobyCarp Fantastic run. It's so inspiring to have a runner of your ability encouraging us to get better and strive to reach our own personal capability.7 -
Logged my first long run of the month. 20 miles (32 KM) with almost 2000 feet (610 M) of elevation. It was a bit of a slog, was not sure why till I got home an looked at my weather station and say NINETY-ONE PERCENT HUMIDITY. Come on! It is supposed to be winter! Winter is dry! Grr.
I started out the run way over dressed, but I knew that I would be running through sunset and would be happy for the laters in the later part of the run. I was right. When I turned in the final bit home I was comfortable.
I had had a few technical difficulties with the run, like shoes coming untied and all that, but over all I gave it the old leftrightleftrightleftrightleftrightleftright and got it done.
Kind of surprised actually. My training has been so spotty for so long due to weather and work and such that I did not know I had 20 miles in me. I am pretty sure I could have done a full today, it would have been about 30-40 mins slower than I normally hit, but still within reach.14 -

From 5.5 to 6? You can do it. That half mile difference is more about mental fortitude than physical ability. A half mile is within reach with a month's training. I mean there is no guarantee cause everyone is a bit different, but I have confidence you can do it. If focus and stay on target.7 -

Definitely all about mental fortitude. Which is a serious struggle for me. But I'm hopeful that I can pull it out by the end of the month!

Seriously, that is a 10% ish increase. A very reasonable goal. You got this!4 -
Treadmill miles after work tonight. I didn't want to run this morning when it was still pretty cold (plus I wanted to sleep in), but I also didn't want to run outside in the dark this evening after our snow from yesterday melted all day. If anything was frozen, I knew I wouldn't be able to see it. So I planned to go to the gym, but since I work in a running store my coworkers were like, "Um.... just use the treadmill here and then lock up again when you're done." So after everyone went home, I hopped on the treadmill and passed the time watching a Netflix doc and then jamming to some music. It didn't feel very long -- which is saying a lot for a treadmill run -- and I was surprised how fresh my legs felt after standing for most of 9 hours at work.
And now for some calories and some sleeps and then doing 2x as many miles tomorrow

@kristinegift Dang that is convenient!2

Feb goal: 40 mi
2/2 5.1 mi
@garygse Thanks for the Strava link! I joined the group—somehow I have to link my MFP handle to my name there, but I’m in!
This group has got me charged up enough so that I’m now thinking about the Vancouver half marathon the first weekend of May... hmm. I think the timing may be right. I’m going to head into Hal Higdon’s novice plan—or something close to it—for a few weeks and see what consistency I can maintain before signing up.11 -

It's pretty nice... none of the Other People problems you find in a gym, plus the gym would have closed before I finished the run. Win win on my end!!7 -

There are two of us doing that race already - more is merrier . Come run it with me and @RunRachelleRun!9 -
Wow so many great races! I can't keep track of everyone, will have to go back and read all the race reports a second time!
Any groundhogs here in Memphis definitely saw shadows today. Our weather is ridiculous! A couple of days ago, 19 F. Today, 70! It was almost too hot, had to dig out my summer running clothes.
6.2 on trails at Shelby Farms. Was hoping to get 8 but yesterday was a lifting day and my muscles were feeling it. Also, my husband is still feeling a little battered after his trail fall two days ago. So we did the 10k trails course and called it good, then walked around the lake.
One funny thing happened - came around a corner and almost ran into the lady I'm tied with in my age group in the trails series I'm running. We were behind her for about half a mile and then she turned one way and I turned the other. My husband says, "Geez no wonder you two are tied, you run exactly the same speed!" The first race in the series she was 8 seconds ahead of me, the second I was about 15 ahead of her. My husband was teasing me about being competitive, he says I need to introduce myself. He suggested the phrase, "You're going DOWN!"
Because of the glorious weather there were so many people at the park today that it took us nearly twenty minutes to turn in to the parking area! And google showed the back road as solid red with traffic when we went to leave. People were parking on the grass, and marching around the lake in herds, three and four abreast. Never been so happy to be running trails, except for me, my rival, and a couple of young men who are also in our series, no one was back in the woods trails. I did have to run through a soccer game to GET to the woods trails, though! We saw sooo many doggies, there were just happy doggies everywhere.
Fortunately by the time we were done walking around the lake, the park was technically closed (they lock the gates at sundown) and some of the crowd was thinning out. We got one last glimpse of the sunset as we left:16 -
Can’t believe 12 pages in already! Lol
Gonna go for another 100 mile month.
Even though I did get a few extra miles last month, gonna try to go 2 months in a row before thinking about stretching more

Stay with pace group for my (hopefully reasonable) goal time for the first 3k. It's flat here and goes past a large concentration camp, which always feels weird to me. On training runs, I've actually stopped there for my own moment of silence, but not tonight - I also think that living life to the fullest, running and loving it, in the face of all that evil, may be one if the best responses. Where was I? Oh yes, kilometer 3. When it starts going downhill towards the beer factory I can speed up if I like, then try to keep a steady pace until kilometer 8. If at any point the pace group catches up to me, I need to do my best to stay with them. If necessary I can entertain myself with jokes about the *interesting* shape of the route. Starting at kilometer 8 is a nasty hill that will claim a number of runners. I want to nail the hill & highway exit ramp, and get to the top with the energy to drive it home to the finish just within my goal time. I'm not planning on a PR, based on recent training. Then I can claim my food and head home.
Short version of the recap is that it went exactly according to plan, except for me second-guessing all of my clothing choices due to a heatwave at 6C, and hitting "pause" on my watch at halfway instead of "lap" and didn't realize it until I guess 300 m later. I actually missed the PR by 7 seconds, which was much closer than I expected, but between not even remembering my PR and the watch being off, I had no way of knowing I was so close, and honestly don't know where I'd've gotten 7 more seconds anyway (MAYBE if I had skipped the aide station), so really I'm just thrilled with my time! At the long stretch before the finish line, I put it on full power and I think the final guy I was going to pass must've felt the power of my force field about to overtake him because he found a little more energy, too. The crowd enjoyed it. I'll have to look up whose chip registered first, just for fun.

@martaindale TACOS!!! Great race, congrats!3

@MegaMooseEsq funny you should say that about strength training and shoes, I always used to do it in socks until I dropped a dumbbell on my little toe. Yeah, that taught me to stick on an old pair of whatever for a little protection. But no, definitely not running shoes, those are just for running. By the time they progress to strength/general use shoes the cushioning has likely died altogether.

Also congrats to @kgirlhart @MobyCarp @marisap2010 and anyone else who raced, or is getting ready to race, this weekend!8
-
@amymoreorless - glad you are recovered from your marathon and ready for a nice easy run again. That post-marathon soreness is no joke.
@Scott6255 you're doing great back up to 10 mile long runs - it took me quite a while to work my way back to longer runs and I'm still struggling to get 10 miles in 3 months out. Glad you had a nice run!
@shanaber I have been eyeing that heated foam roller too, sounds glorious.
@Elise4270 hope your migraines get better soon. 2-3 pounds wouldn't worry me on their own, but hope that you find some relief for your migraines and stress overall.
@marisap2010 Congrats on your trail race! It's so frustrating having to navigate walkers in the beginning of a race. I don't know why they don't seem to get it - they definitely have every right to do their thing, but just start at the back or pull way over when you want to walk!
@MobyCarp congrats on your race and 3rd place for your team. Glad you were able to enjoy a little time away from the cold too.
@kgirlhart big congrats on your HM PR!!! Free shirt AND a free banana is some serious swag Not to brag, but I got a free banana just for going to the gym yesterday. I do love your shirt, though, but agree with you there should be a medal. A groundhog medal would be cool.
@polskagirl01 nice job on your race - getting within a few seconds of a PR when you said you weren't planning on one at all. Love your full power finish and that you forced the other guy to pour it on too. Excellent!
I did manage to assemble my pull-up bar last night, with a modicum of swearing. OK, there was a pretty fair amount of swearing with trying to get the holes to line up for the very last bolt. I tried various attempts at chin-ups, pull-ups and hangs to test it out. Hoping my door frame is up to the task. I wish it was about 6-12" higher but what can you do.
I might try some version the Sally challenge today as part of my workout. Great job to those of you who have been working on it.
Hope I didn't miss any races and good job to everyone running this weekend. Happy Sunday running or relaxing or eating your weight in snacks!

@kgirlhart Great job on your HM PR!! That is a huge improvement!
@polskagirl01 way to go on your 10K!
@MegaMooseEsq I have been running in Ghost 10s since Dec. 2017, and bought some 11s this past November. I didn't notice very much difference. In fact, I wore the 11s for my marathon and feet didn't complain one bit. I think you'll be happy with them6 -
Congrats to all those who raced this weekend! Only able to skim posts at the moment but seems like everyone did well and had fun.
I nearly didn't run today - I hadn't realised half my kit was still in the wash, the temp dropped overnight so wasn't sure if my usual route would be too icy which I am not prepared for and I had a couple of drinks last night so was a feeling a little fuzzy. Decided to head out for a few laps at the 'park' round the corner anyway before going to pick up a parcel and aimed for 2 miles, but ended up doing a bit more. Next week I shall be more prepared!
01Feb - 1.85 miles (treadmill)
03Feb - 3.85 miles (outside)
Total to date: 5.7 miles of 40
I also signed up for my first half marathon (in October) which gives me more than enough time to train!15 -
0203-10.2k total 10.2k, goal-80k
First run of the month. It was really really windy, and a struggle to keep at a decent pace. Took more out of my legs than I'd thought. Good thing I have a rest day tomorrow.
Congrats to everyone who raced this weekend! @MobyCarp @marisap2010 @kgirlhart @polskagirl01 @martaindale9 -
February Running Totals (miles)
2/1 –5.16 course preview
2/2 – 7.29 warmup, commute, 8K XC race
2/3 –10.81 easy
February running total to date – 23.26
Nominal February mileage goal: 190 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Work the February races into the training plan smoothly. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage or races.
Today's notes – The day after the race, the club had arranged for the hotel to serve breakfast at 7:00. My roommate had an early flight out, so I was up earlier. Had a nice chat in the lobby with a guy who would be running his first marathon at 7:30, the Tallahassee marathon. There would be road closures. The start line was not far from our packet pickup, the finish line somewhere on or near the FSU campus.
Checkout is noon, and my flight is after 4 PM. So I got out to run roads about 8, thinking to run 8 to 10 miles and try not to interfere with the races. Headed out toward Cascade Park, and when I got there I found the race course. It was using a half road just there. I ran the other direction on the half the race wasn't using, and cheered runners. That was fun till about 2.25 miles, then I turned away from the course. Picked it up again in a bit, where there was room to run the other direction without interfering. Found a spot fairly early, where the runners were thinner and faster. Ran retro, cheering runners, as I noticed the character change from fast to medium to slow runners, with some walkers sprinkled in. It was fun. At one point I had to reverse my course because the only ways to turn would be onto the race course where it was too narrow to be sure I wouldn't interfere.
I was careful not to interfere with any racer's chosen path, and particularly careful to stay out of the good tangents when there were runners who appeared to be running reasonable tangents. Many of the runners seemed to really appreciate being cheered by someone wearing a Boston Marathon tech shirt.
Left the last of the racers about 6.6 miles into my run, having got between 4 and 5 miles of cheering in. Ran back into downtown, through the FSU campus, and got turned around on the final leg of my jaunt. So I ended up with a little more distance than planned, but it's all good.
Got back to the hotel, went to the fitness center to stretch, and saw two people running on the dreadmills. When it's 57º F outside, go figure. It was pretty humid, which was obvious once I stopped running; but still. Run on a dreadmill when the weather is this nice and there's a race to cheer? I don't get it.
Got done stretching, back to the room, showered and dressed. Still have an hour to pack and check out, plenty of time to check in here. No pressure.
. . . and back to reality late this evening. Last time I looked, the temperature is supposed to be around 40º F when I get home. That's a whole lot better than it was when I left on Thursday.

Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen.
My legs and hips were still a little unhappy last night and this morning, so I decided to make today a rest day. I can always repost if the nice weather gets me to reconsider - or change/edit after tomorrow's scheduled run.5 -
I tried to get caught up on this thread and I am sure I missed someone, but congratulations on your races @MobyCarp @marisap2010 (and Happy Birthday) @polskagirl01 @martaindale.
