Wha?! In talking further I realized she truly believed this to be true. She regularly gets this smoothie with nut butter and protein powder in it (along with her sandwich) and she's not a calorie counter but she is trying to lose weight. Sometimes I just have to exit those conversations.
I'd so much rather eat real meals. Give me a steak, roasted potatoes, mushrooms and a salad any day rather than a smoothie.6 -

I get a conversation like this with some frequency.
A co-worker of mine regularly comments on how good I look and has repeatedly asked how I do it. I tell her I count calories, and explain that I go to the gym/walk/bike. She then seems disappointed, and the repetitive questioning suggests she’s waiting for me to reveal some easy magical part that I’ve previously omitted.
I then get to hear her list of current reasons why she’s as heavy as she is. the last time our boss brought treats (cookies: 165 calories each) same coworker pressured me to have more than one cookie “because I deserved it.” Erm, no.
I get the same response! People ask me how I took off my weight (67 lbs in 8 month so far), and when I say I use MFP to count my calories, they are disappointed, and want to know what else I am doing. I tell them that is it. Just counting calories. And they keep asking more questions, hoping I will tell them some magic formula or trendy diet. They all want some easy, trendy plan that will just shake that weight off. And then they will respond that they are going to try the cabbage soup diet or only eating 10 carbs a day or whatever.8 -
My mother 55 years ago: "If you eat something out of the fridge and you don't sit down, it doesn't count. If you keep the fridge door open whilst eating, even more so."12

Oh, I have another one! Not directly “diet” related, but my aunt was very proud one Christmas because she made me a “vegetarian” version of her baked beans, which usually contained canned pork and beans.
Aunt: I left off the bacon on top of your beans!
Me: Did you make them with pork and beans?
Aunt: Yes.
Me: The *pork* and beans?
Aunt: Yes.
Me: In the vegetarian beans?
Aunt: Yes, they’re just like the other beans but yours don’t have bacon on top.24 -
I’ve heard quite a few jaw-droppers lately, including:
“I put sour cream on pretty much everything because it doesn’t have any calories.”
“It’s been proven that calorie counting doesn’t work.”
“Why are you putting whole milk in your coffee? I thought you were trying to lose weight. Whole milk has fat in it.”
Anybody else hear some great misconceptions lately? Please share!
I ABSOLUTELY hate when someone says “aren’t you on a diet? You’re suppose to stay away from foods high in fat.”

I always get comments from family, friends and colleagues whenever they see me eating something 'unhealthy' (like a doughnut or cookie) along the lines of "*exaggerated surprise* you're eating a doughnut!" and "guess you're off your diet". I used to try and explain how calorie counting and macros work but I don't bother anymore.
This! My family is always on a fad diet kick like no sugar and just eat salads and I’m like you don’t have to eat like that to lose weight. I’ve explained calorie counting to my family so much and they still don’t understand.1 -

I'm sure it started before I saw it, but I first saw that on a show where they pitted different diets against each other. The keto guy was kinda crazy with some of his suggestions kinda like that. Put like 2 tablespoons in the coffee... blech!

"You should try herbalife! I've lost 8 pounds in a week."
I used to get this all the freakin' time when I was down about 80 lb from my heaviest & losing actively with MFP - and usually from women who had always been thin, or women who had always been very overweight and still were.
Also, they always say this like it would be better to lose 8 lb in a week than in four or six or however many weeks. I don't get it.
There's something about reaching that point in weight loss where the loss shows, but one still has some pounds to lose, that seems to bring out the silly suggestions from others! It can be anything, but it's always posed as The Thing one needs to do to keep losing weight . . . and IME it often comes from friends who are still heavy, wanting to lose, and sadly just not ever quite getting there.
Partly sad, partly funny.6 -
I've been the same weight after losing 100lbs for going on two years now. Hubby still encourages me to "just buy healthy stuff" at the grocery store.11

Some people say that butter frothed into their coffee is really tasty (it's a thing some folks like to do, usually in conjunction with a low carb, higher fat approach - to hit their calorie goal, their appetite being supressed from the low carb, as they sometimes describe it).
I always figure I shouldn't question other people's taste enthusiasms or dietary preferences, as long as it isn't poisonous or wildly non-nutritious: After all, I think oreos are not even a food substance (ick), and love all the kale, mushrooms, etc. . . . glass houses, y'know. :drinker:8 -

I've had butter in my coffee, but it has to be salted. It brings out the coffee flavour, especially if it's any kind of speciality roast. It's not "good" or "bad" for you... a preference thing.8 -

And the truth is, the idea of it is so easy. After a while, figuring out how many calories you’ve eaten is quick. Technology has made it super easy! The hard part is, nobody will do it for you.10 -

Exactly! I know people feel differently about this. I know one guy in particular who doesn't really like vegetables in general so he "has to" blend it in a smoothie or juice to get his veggies in. But yeah, I'd so rather eat "meals"! I have a Vitamix and use it a lot but the only time I really make smoothies, they're a little unsweetened almond milk, hemp protein, and bananas and maybe some cocoa. Like a 160 calorie smoothie, that's more my speed than a 500+ cal "meal replacement". Just personal preference!3 -
Visit the FatLogic subreddit if you all want to see some serious doozies. It’s the kind of stuff you’re all talking about, but on steroids.
I’ve mostly heard stuff about MLM garbage helping me to lose weight from my friends on Facebook who sell it. I’ve seen claims that apple cider vinegar will flush out all your fat. I’ve seen the fat flushing crap in general. Claims that this ridiculous fad diet and that ridiculous fad diet is the one. And so on. I’m fortunate that I was raised by a very health, fitness, diet and nutrition conscious mother, so I never heard any nonsense from her. And she was supportive of my weight loss and the healthy lifestyle I embraced.12 -

For certain I gained weight because I made a lot of bad choices over a long period of time. To lose it, I have to make a lot of good choices over a long period of time. This seems reasonable to me.
I do think people are looking for the "magic whatever" so that they can continue to make bad choices and look like a supermodel or an Olympic swimmer or something. This "magic whatever" exists in the private universe they have concocted. I have my feet somewhat better planted in reality.2 -

Oh god, MLMs... I hate that they prey on individuals who are seeking advice on how to better their health. Those people buy into it too, then when the products dont work they lose hope and feel defeated. Its extremely sad.9 -

Was the 130 pounds you already lost fake??
Congrats on losing 130 lbs. by the way!
Thanks!
This is one of those things where I told the doctor I wanted to lose weight, and he gave me xeroxed sheets and offered to refer me to a dietitian. I asked if he thought that would help, and he said, "I don't think it ever has." I decided it was just time to figure out what I was going to do and just do it.
It is not as if I am theorizing or reading from a manual. I know what I did, and I know what worked for me. I am still tracking and watching macros/calories. It is how I am maintaining. You "run what brung ya."

I don't see what would be a "jaw dropper" about putting skim milk vs whole milk in your coffee. Seems like legit advice to me unless you were trying to do a keto "bullet proof" kind of thing, but in that case you wouldn't wantto use milk to begin with.2

Lunch lady: Oh yes.
Me: Nice - sometimes it's made with beef broth.
Lunch lady: Oh no - we use chicken broth.

I called a Mexican restaurant last week to see if they offered a gluten free choices. The gentleman that answered the phone said "Everything here is gluten free! I've never even heard of gluten, so I cant see how we could be cooking with it."
I politely explained to him what gluten was, and then told him that eventually they were going to kill someone lol. I then decided to find another place to eat.13 -

Sugarfree soda is bad. It will trick your body and think it's sugar and you still get all the calories....13

Someone told me that I lost my weight "the wrong way" because I eat too many calories, and nobody could lose weight eating that many calories (1600 a day).
Several people have told me that I "won't lose any weight eating more than 20 carbs a day." I eat about 75 to 120 carbs a day.
I just had a similar discussion with another numbskull on a different site. My dietitian told me to keep it between 1200 and 1500 calories a day, and especially never to go below that 1200. But of course this random person on the internet knows more than a registered dietitian does, and insists that's too many calories if I want to lose weight. (I've lost 45 pounds so far, 5 since joining MFP.) "Are you sure she didn't say never to go *above* 1200 calories a day?" Yeah, because I'm that stupid, and I don't know the difference between above and below.14 -
A group of my friends all talking about how evil carbs are and how they make you fat. To which I replied a lost my weight on a high carb diet and maintain on one too.9

"My problem is I don't eat enough"
Haahahah, YES THIS ONE!
"I can eat as much as I want because the Doctor told me I should eat dark chocolate for the antioxidants to lose weight"
Asked my cousin to come for a walk with me the other day and her reply was. "I already walked today". I said oh where did you go, she said "I walked around target, went 2000 steps!"
"I burned 3000 calories today, the elliptical said so"
"My hormones are out of whack, that is why I can't lose weight, it's not my fault"
"Counting calories doesn't work, I tried it for a whole week and only lost 2lb"16 -
"I made a cake, but it's okay because it's fat free, I got it from weight watchers magazine, you can have as much as you want"4

Love this thread!
So much of this was me about 2.5 years ago! Especially the 'this is just my weight, my body is obviously happy at this weight - won't ever change'
Recently at work (UK) it's been all about the tumeric. Tumeric in everything helps burn twice the calories.
Generally there is usually a conversation going about how they can eat as much cake as they want as long as they take the stairs rather than the lift, or as also mentioned here, they went to the gym and walked for 20mins therefore they can have a macdonalds.
I leave them to it cos as I say, I was there believing all that stuff as well.
People have asked me what I do but generally they go away believeing its, 'all because you swim', no matter what I say. (I was swimming for 2 years before I started losing, it does nothing when you reward it with fish and chips from the chippy 3 times a week!)
Tis amusing to hear the woo around the office though.16
