Things people say when you lose weight

I’ve gotten everything from “you look great” to “I think you’re losing too much”. My favorite is “you look so much younger”20

My favourite is 'You're looking really well!'16

When in response to turning down dessert/birthday cake/ office treats "Oh, are you still doing that diet thing...?" (It's been a year...)
Same thing for when someone sees me enjoying a treat- So...how is that diet of yours going? Insinuating I must not be dieting anymore because I ate a cookie.
I don't like it when people attach a certain thing or event to my weight loss. For instance, I have vacation coming up in June to Mexico. When chatting with some co-workers and offered donuts/cupcakes/cookies etc and turning down- they will say something along the lines of "oh that's right- you're working towards that summer body for Mexico!" Umm...I have been at this for a year and when I started a trip to Mexico wasn't even on my radar.44 -
That was a long time ago, but mostly I got comments on how fit I was looking and becoming.12
-
I’ve had the whole range of comments, from people who have been very supportive, to an acquaintance who refused to believe I was not ill to the friends who have never commented at all and the friend who told me everybody was talking about me when I had left the party.10

My favorite Husband Baby something's wrong with you there's a knot on your side. Me That's a hipbone. Haha!32

Got a “You’re skinny.” one today and recently had one “Don’t lose any more.” recently.

This sort of thing is a killer, ugh, people asked me if I was losing weight for my wedding (I was eloping on a mountain and no) or to "try to conceive" (I was already 35 and had been childfree by choice for 20 years so no)16 -
"You look sick."
That's what my wife said when I got home from my last China trip. It was a gruelling 58 days long.14 -
Nothing. Not a peep, good or bad after losing 35-40 pounds. I'm pretty sure there was a noticeable difference between my weight of 185 and my weight of 145!68

Lots of people are wary of making comments I think. Of course they could settle with 'you're looking well' or 'you're looking good today' but I think the emphasis on PC behaviour scares a lot of folk.32 -
Too many people said to me: "You look great! Are you sick?" I must have looked fantastic18

Yeah, I agree with this. Just reading some of the comments here it seems some of the things I didn't think were offensive are being viewed as so.26 -

Apparently so. I think it’s because he shocked I could lose the weight, so just have been due to either extreme.4 -
I had someone recently say "It's great your losing weight - but you do know that you have to CHANGE your eating habits to maintain" ..... Of course I do, I have changed my eating habits to lose the weight I've been losing - I know I can't go back to eating garbage everyday when I get to my goal.... I am not an idiot!51

“Do you have cancer” . Yep ..really16

My favorite was yesterday. Yoga studio manager asked if she could hug me, and whispered in my ear, “You have transformed your body. I am so proud of you.”
I sincerely appreciated her not blurting it out and making it a topic of discussion as others at the studio have done. Although I get it that they’re all happy for me, it’s weird for a group of casual acquaintances to be even more casually discussing my body as they saddle up to get out the door after a class.
Also, twice a week, is the very very enthusiastic gym owner who took me on as a pet project to train, and whom I dearly love even though she is barking nuts.
This is a very small, hardcore neighborhood barbell gym and this wonderful woman is like hyper on steroids. Her thing is to scream “Look at those guns!” and then drag random heavy lifter guys over to admire them, whether they deserve it or not. She also asked permission to post pictures of me on the gym’s Facebook, and then totally killed the ego boost by referring to me there as “one of my seniors”, which just busted me up.
I was horrified at first, but realized it’s part of her motivation technique, and now she just makes me giggle. Albeit awkwardly. The guys love this woman to death and will do anything for her, including complimenting me upon command. We all roll eyes and grin behind her back and hug her when we leave. It’s such a great place to work out, and it’s like having a playmate cheering you on.64 -
"Wow you look great, how much have you lost!" A variation of you look good/great and keep it ups. I also have gotten "You look great as is even if you don't lose anymore weight".9

Most comments have been positive ones from ppl at work:
"Hey, hope I don't offend you, but I've noticed you've lost a lot of weight. You are looking good!"
"You're slimming down!"
"Omgosh, you look really good!"
"Look at you all beautiful just after having 2 babies!"
"Have you lost weight?? I've noticed over the last couple weeks."
Weirdest comment, but still nice I guess lol
*As I'm pushing a heavy piece of equipment*
Coworker: "Be careful, that thing is heavier than you!"
*It's heavy, but obviously not heavier than me*
Me: "Uhhhhh, I doubt that *laughing*"
Coworker: "Well, I was just trying to be nice!" *also laughing*8 -
I hate that cancer or diet question. How foolish would they feel if you responded, yes I have cancer you thoughtless twit. Thanks for bringing up my potentially deadly disease and making light of it. Asshats. My boyfriend lost a ton of weight on chemo. He's in remission now and gained back the weight he lost but it's the least funny thing I can think of - cancer ain't no joke folks.60

My sis in law repeatedly tells me “you’re too skinny momma you need to stop losing”
Or another fave “you’re a mom now you don’t need to be a size 4” (or whatever small size)
So you know, the ole non-compliments
(I’m 5’5” and a buck forty ish and not trying to lose really just lifting weights)
Annoyed can you tell lol24 -
are you addicted to exercise? are you going to be in sports illustrated? These make me mad.
Now for the good, I am jealous of you. I am inspired by you, you are half the woman you were, look great! Another thing that made me mad when I lost 35 lbs and no one noticed and said anything especially at my gym. It was like I was ignored and I had worked like h#ll to get that weight off!13 -

I had a similar bolded comment during my first weightloss journey after I had my firstborn. My mother's actual comment was "You don't need to be a size 8 (Australian) anymore - you bagged the guy AND had his baby!". WTF?!?!? That comment actually derailed that journey.
Just because I am a married woman AND a mother doesn't mean I cannot feel and look my best!45 -
My favorite was years ago. I had lost a bit of weight and was dressed up for an interview, sitting on a bus.
Lady gets on I vaguely know, sons the same age as me and my siblings.
I smile and say hi, blank look. Son who is with her whispers, the penny drops... "Oh hello, I didn't recognize you, you look so good!"
Mmmm, thanks. Whole bus sniggers. Son rolls his eyes.
I think it was more to do with not looking scruffy than the weight, but still!15 -
I’ve lost 80lbs and I have 40lbs to get to my goal weight which will put me right in the middle of a healthy BMI. I am going to get there.
I’ve had enough people say “you don’t need to lose 40lbs” or “40 more is too much” that when asked how much further I plan to go I’ve started saying “20lbs”
It’s weird because I literally just got to an overweight BMI24 -
"You are looking good" but then they will keep pressuring you to eat the food that is not part of your diet: "One cookie is not going to hurt you" Like they want to sabotage your progress.
Well, yes one cookie will hurt because it will start a carb rage that will leave me feeling gross and restart my sugar crack addiction, so please stop asking me to eat your grandma's cookies you brought to the breakroom at work after you told me how good I am looking.57 -
Worst: In laws. Every time I see them they make backhanded compliments and say they can't understand why I would want to lose weight (the whole be healthy thing doesn't register as a reason to them). I've lost 95 pounds in about a year. This past week mother-in-law asked, what do you weigh now? I finally had enough and retorted, if I were gaining weight instead of losing would you ask me my weight? Shut her up fast, but still very annoying.
Best: You look healthier (co-worker I rarely see in person, a few months into my journey).29
