It's a root beer soda, but here in the South, especially closer to Atlanta, they say coke for soda. So if you order a coke the waitress asks what kind would you like, to which some people will even say Pepsi, even though they have real Coca-Cola.3 -

well see, here in the real world, we call all soft drinks a coke. doesn't matter what it is really, you just call it a coke.
the only time you really differentiate it like if you're talking to someone and ask em what they want to drink, like,
"hey jim bob i'm running up to mickey d's for a minute to grab a few burgers. you want anything? what kinda coke you want?" and then they can tell you whatever like "eh gimme a dr pepper"
i do believe if you referred to it as "soda" or even worse, a "pop", here you'd get some funny looks and if it was me, personally, i'd purposefully order the wrong thing for you until you learned how to talk right in the first place.4 -
