I know there are lots of people racing today and tomorrow so just going to say good luck to everyone! I know @amymoreorless finished marathon 1 of her 2 marathon weekend and @RunsOnEspresso finished her HM! Congratulations to both!!!
This was my last long run before the half next weekend. I had planned for 8 miles and I was super frustrated that I seemed to be running well and fast but the last couple of miles were taking forever. I was really starting to worry about completing a half if 8 miles felt so terrible even if I was running faster than planned. Even the 12 miler I ran last week didn't feel this hard. It ended up that Strava had a problem around mile 6 and where I thought I should have been well into mile 7 I still hadn't finished 6... So I ended up running around 9.5 miles at a pace much faster than I have been running up to this point...
Date........Miles.......Total

What I find amazing is he can't train for it because of whatever is wrong with his bones so he did that 7 hours and all the previous races on just doing it!
I know right? Stupidly impressive!2 -

That's too bad - I really loved the pacers at both of my halves last year. Well no matter what, you'll be awesome! You've got a plan, you've done the work, you've got this.1 -

Race report from the Lake Hartwell Dam Run 10k:
Arrive for bib and t-shirt pickup @ 0745. Goes well, as usual, because there is no day of race registration (they have to run limited background checks because you run along the top of an Army Corps of Engineers installation). The buses depart for the 5k starting line in South Carolina, last one runs 5 minutes before start time of 0830.
10k starting line, I line up about mid pack as I haven't run this race in a few years and haven't run in the heat and daylight yet enough this year to get acclimated. The race director gives the prep command, Runners set.....then drops her arm yelling go. And we're off out of the parking lot onto Highway 29 with the first mile going by pretty easily about a quarter of the way through the second mile the hill starts. The hill is not very steep but it does go for a little over a half mile. Fast walked up part of it(ran to the SC line). Turn around at Singing Pines in SC and dowhill to the earthen part of the dam then it was a pretty level or slightly downhill 3 miles to the finish line.
Goal was under 1:15 so I succeeded at that. New goal is to start running in the sun more as my next 2 10Ks are in June.
Pics in spoiler tag.11 -
Congrats to those that raced today and good luck to those that race tomorrow!!
It was a rainy and cloudy week here, but today was beautiful. It took a bit to get going, so by the time I stopped stalling it was close to 11 am. It was also the village wide rummage sales so there were cars and people out every where. It provided for a nice distraction while I made my way to the trail. I was expecting mud and puddles on the trail, but it was actually pretty good. After Thursday’s chilly run it was so nice to run in warmer weather.
5/1- 4 miles
5/2- 4 miles
5/4 - 4.5 miles
Total 12.5 miles/Goal 50 miles5 -
Well, I thought I had a grand plan. Go to a neighboring town that has sidewalks and bike paths and is more than 2 miles end to end. Part of the plan I didn’t think thru.... haven’t been in the town enough to know where hills are, or where dead ends are or where sketch parts of town are. It was still more interesting zig zags and circles than I had in my town. So, I don’t regret my decision, just need to do more exploring and reconnaissance before I do it again. Because I had wayyy to many passes past my car that could lead to bailing on a less determined day. And the college in that town had graduation,so there was weird vehicular and person traffic to dodge.

So much going on here, missed the last 3 pages! Thinking of @PastorVincent and anyone else running tomorrow (today?), I hope it goes to plan despite the weather
I forgot it was my best friends birthday today, was reminded at 8am and them remembered I was going to bake her a special chilli chocolate cake. So aked if she wanted to go to a cafe for lunch then quickly made the cake. Basic chocolate cake with chili chocolate Swiss Meringue Buttercream and chili chocolate ganache. It was sooooo good!
Then we had two different groups of people view the house, both really like it. Both mentioned talking to their finance people so will see...
Now we are having fish and chips on the beach with a bonfire and fire works (left over from guy fawks - 5th November.) all up an awesome Sunday really.9 -
Yesterday I was part of a team in an 8-hour trail event. It was such a blast. Team Baton Rouge - we had to run with silly fascinators on and celebrated with champagne. It was a 6.7km loop (my watch and many other clocked it as 6.3 but that could be the terrain - very hilly and winding), and the aim was to complete as many laps as we could in 8 hours. We won our category before we began by being the only womens-only team, but it was the most awesome event and day out. We complete 11 laps with 15 minutes to spare - I ran two. Weather was perfect - started off misty but cleared to lovely warm sunshine. The trail was fantastic - about 2km flat single track through grass and bush, then 800m climb on a gravel forestry road (in blazing sunshine) then into the trees for a pretty serious climb for another kilometre. It then was a technical but fast downhill - lots of tree roots and mud-filled ruts (as long as you didn't step/fall in you stayed clean and dry) - then levelling out for a final fast kilometre through the trees.
As well as the 8-hour relay (which finished at 5pm), there was a 12-hour relay (finished at 9pm), and a 'last man standing' ultra. Basically, contestants had to complete one lap every hour until there was a winner (took me 44 minutes, speedsters were coming in under 30, and the ultras were about 50 minutes per lap). That event had started at 12 noon the previous day (Friday) with 46 entrants. By the time we got there to set up at 8am yesterday there were five left - four men and a woman. They slowly collapsed one after the other until there was only the woman left. She won after 29 laps just before 5pm, however, after giving her her medal, they asked her if she wanted to do one more to clock up 200km, and she, being the true crazy ultra runner that they all are, said yes, and headed off at 5pm on the dot for one more loop! Making it 30 hours running with just a few minutes rest each hour! Madness, but awe-inspiring.
Here are a few snaps from the event. Race swag was an apple and a chocolate bar, but we got a beer each at prize giving and I also picked up a very cute VW combi money box and glass water bottle as a spot prize. Definitely doing it again next year - possibly the 12 hour...16 -
Great job @ContraryMaryMary! That sounds like a really fun event - and awesome that you had the win in the bag before you began How cute is that prize?!? Congrats to the woman who won the ultra as the last person standing - and then took one more lap. Wow.

@Tramboman Sorry your back seems worse. Hope it gets to feeling better soon!
@PastorVincent Sounds like you had a great 5K, even if you didn't get that PW you were hoping for.
@katharmonic Good luck with your race today. I'm sure you are going to do great!
@workaholic_nurse Great job on coming in under your goal. I don't understand the pace on your little tag though. Isn't that way off? Looks like a pretty place for a run.
@ContraryMaryMary WOW! That sounds like an intense race. Glad you all enjoyed it and, that lady is bad***.
Good luck to all who are racing today. I have a FB friend who is running the Pittsburg Marathon with team Determination to raise money for the American Cancer Society. It's his first Marathon, so wishing him luck also.

Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Back is almost back to normal. Rest with golf tomorrow, then see how that goes with the plan being to pick up running again on Tuesday.
Best of luck to all of today's racers and congratulations to all of yesterday's.

Ran Wisconsin Half Marathon yesterday and PR'd by over 2 minutes. Two HUGE PR's for me in 2 weeks. Old time was 2:04:02 and time yesterday was 2:01:53. And considering before April 20, I hadn't PR'd anything in 4 years. THIS IS MY YEAR!!!13 -

My girl!! She finished her half in 2:20 and change, right within her goal range of 2:15 to 2:30. She had quite the group of supporters to cheer her on at the end.

Good luck to @PastorVincent and his wife at today's Pittsburgh marathon. Having finished a half yesterday, I can't imagine thinking running double the amount of miles. Whew. So happy to see the checkered flags. I will post a race report later today or tomorrow at the latest.
I am meeting my girlfriend for an early dinner. She was a classmate of mine in nursing school and was fired on Friday. She told another nurse that he was f'ing lazy and he filed a complaint to human resources. She was fired after 17 years of employment with that hospital. I am very shocked that it happened and hope to prop up her spirits.9 -
Wow, I can't even begin to keep up with everyone that raced this weekend, but congrats to each and every one of you!
You all are fearless, strong, and a bunch of badasses!3 -

The Mountain Goat Run 10-mile race today felt a little rough for me, but I did better than I thought I might. Although nothing compared to last week's elevation or grueling effort, the hills were a definite challenge today. My legs felt fairly well recovered going in, but after a few miles I could definitely feel the fatigue. This was a fun race atmosphere, it's one of the biggest local races and there is great crowd support and lots of bands along the course. Including one line of 18 drum sets along the longest hill - they were awesome! The weather was really pretty perfect, as it was overcast and about 48 degrees to start.
There are 4 main hills on the course, with the third one being the longest grind. Miles 5-7 were the worst because of that hill and it was all pretty much just an uphill stretch and mile 7 was my slowest. I tried to really go for it on the downhills and let gravity help me make up some time. My best mile was mile 5, which was a really good downhill section. A friend from my running group was spectating and cheering around mile 4 and another on the very last hill, and they both gave me a much-needed hug and boost to the spirits. I'm glad I had done the training runs because the last part of the course after that last hill is just way longer than you think they should be. I kept telling myself "you've done harder things than this" (like just last week!), and "just kick it a little tiny bit and you'll be done". And blessedly I turned that last corner and saw the finish. I wouldn't say I sprinted but I did pick it up slightly and was so happy to cross that line. I finished in 1:44:47, which I'm fairly pleased with and I'll definitely take as a 10-mile race PR, as this is the first one of that distance I've ever done.
The party after was really great. There was a good amount of food, and 26.2 beer from Marathon Brewing Co., which was pretty good in a post-race frame of mind. I had two and they went down pretty easily! The band on the stage was excellent and did a lot of "way back" songs from the 80s and 90s. We had a really great turnout for our run club and our coach was very excited, it was great to see (he also won first in his age group and came in top 20 in the race, along with a few other guys in the club). I'm exhausted and ready for a major nap and I think I'm definitely scheduling a massage for this week.Bling and shirt pic below. The little goat on the medal is cute and moves back and forth.

Race report! I ran the Lausanne 20km race today. It's been more than a year since my last organised event, can you believe that?
I wasn't even sure if I wouldn't have to DNF this one. My left knee was bugging me (why? It's been fine since almost 1.5 years now, and I do lots of strength training and cross training and rotate my shoes and everything... *whine*). I didn't run a single day in the last week - which is also why I didn't check in with this challenge yet, much easier to stay away from running if I'm not reading about it
The rest didn't cure it 100%, but good enough: today the knee only started complaining when I was walking around after the race. Not while I was running
The weather was a real surprise: it was sooo cold. At least for May. I don't know where this cold front is coming from. I triple-checked the weather forecast last night, but it kept saying 6-8°C (43-46F). When I got out of the car this morning, I realised it was even colder: 2°C (35F). Average wind speed was 11km/h (7mph), with gusts up to 37km/h (23mph), so it felt even colder than that. It took me a kilometre or two to stop freezing. And in the second half of the race there was even a bit of snow alternating with the light rain.
I finished in 2:05:07. My goal was "faster than 2:10", with a secret goal of 2:05. So close! I blame the wind for those annoying extra seconds! At the second rest stop a gust of wind blew away my paper cup as I wanted to toss it into a bin, and I wasted a few precious seconds hunting it and picking it up. ... No, to be honest, I think I was just a tiny bit too slow overall. I compared by mace with my 2017 race, and for example the long climb in the middle of the race took me 36:53 this year, while I did the same segment in 36:28 in 2017. Oh well, I'm still happy to finish so close to my stretch goal, rather than limping over the finish line on a bad knee three hours later
The race course if kind of hilly. The start/finish is at 375m (1230 feet), the highest point at 537m (1759 feet), with some little ups and downs along the way too, so in the end my watch showed 347m (1138 feet) elevation. Not bad for a race in the city centre ^^
Here's a finishing photo. You had to pay extra upon registration if you wanted the medal, and I did. It's so rare that I have a chance to get a medal, that was worth a few extra francs. And you can't tell from the picture, but I was actually happy with my time after finishing. Just not so happy with the gusts of wind blowing tiny frozen raindrops in my face the moment the photo was taken, which made for a rather frozen smile17 -
I’m loving all the race reports - congratulations all! I was hoping on running a virtual 10k today on my favorite trail, but decided to “warm up” by cleaning the bathrooms and halfway through my right knee and left hamstring have started twinging, so sadly I’ll be taking another day on the bench. It’s been a good weekend, though - we set up our patio furniture, I’ve gotten a good bit of mostly low impact gardening in, and my husband and I had a really good talk yesterday about the state of our relationship and I came out of it feeling really good about the future.
Now my knee just has to stop hurting in the next week, because the trail I’d hoped to run is closing for a major construction project soon and won’t be open again for a couple of years. Fingers crossed! I’ve already hit all my other fitness goals for the week, so I’m going to look on the bright side and call it a win.
A writer my husband followed died yesterday at 37 after a freak allergic reaction and it got me thinking - I deeply love running, but I can’t let it define me. There are too many uncertainties in the world to spend my time wishing I was doing something else. Today I’m not going to run, but I’m not going to let that stop me.7 -
@runnermom419 Great job! Congratulations!
@7lenny7 Congratulations to your daughter! Great run!
@ereck44 Hope you were able to lift your girlfriends spirits. Being fired after that amount of time for that offense stinks.
@katharmonic Way to go! Great job pushing through the hard parts and getting the PR!
@_nikkiwolf_ Great race!!!

I set out yesterday to do 20 miles, but it seemed most of the trails where I went were closed because of either flooding or construction. So I just went running around generally and had a lot of BG issues, so cut it short at 14.81 miles.

No run for me today while I'm resting my ankle. I'll see the doc in the morning and hopefully she'll give me the go ahead for the HM in 2 weeks. The ice and rest seems to be helping so I thought a little liesurly walk with Ein (the Corgi) for his 3rd birthday was a good way to test it out slowly. We walked 1.25 miles. I hated to miss my long run when the weather was so nice. I feel like I am probably being overly cautious, but this close to a race I don't want to do anything to make it worse. I keep telling myself that one missed run isn't the end if the world. And so far I have only missed one run. Friday and Saturday are rest days anyway.6
