The pushback only comes when people make unrealistic claims of the " I can eat all I want and still lose" ilk or keto evangelists who seem to think keto is best for everyone.
Pretty much, except I'll add that I do believe that some can "eat all I want and still lose" on keto (especially early on), as I think keto can change how much people perceive they want, as well as preventing the mindless eating that for some of us was more of a problem than actual hunger.
I think you meant the claims that people ate more than maintenance and lost, and I totally agree.
As for keto being something that works for some in making dieting more fun or a deficit easier or the like? Sure thing, and so long as it's not claimed that cutting carbs is necessary (see recent thread about how you should not eat fruit) or that keto is superior, there would be no pushback. I really don't think that anyone has been negative toward OP, so I don't understand the attitude (claiming people are being "snooty"). Absolutely no one bashed anyone or made negative comments toward OP or his diet or "can't accept" his diet (whatever that means), and many of us said we were happy he'd found something he liked and that keto seemed to be a good fit for him, so I'd ask those claiming that they did to identify what posts they are talking about or to apologize for trying to stir up trouble. (The "people are anti keto comment" early on by another poster I think shaded OP's take, sadly -- comments like that are really not helpful or conducive to a good discussion, and tend to turn discussions into an us against them that most of us reject -- diet wars are stupid, different diets will be preferred by different people.)
I really think most people are on the same page and have no issues with keto at all and instead see it as a tool that works well for some even if not a good fit or necessary for most of us. I often suggest trying lowering carbs if someone is struggling with hunger or doesn't want to count (there are also other options if one does not want to count, which I have used in the past -- personally I'm at maintenance but am logging most of the time now because I am interested in hitting all my nutrition goals at Cron, so not logging wouldn't be a positive for me, and I do think logging if doing a restrictive diet of any sort can be a good idea at least for a bit until you insure nutrition is being met).12 -
It sounded like he thought eating the things he mentioned was something he couldn't have done if not doing keto, or that the rest of us cannot do. So I think "cool, but you know that's not something off limits for the rest of us, right" is a reasonable response.19 -

The issue was he was telling everyone they should eat that way, not that he found a WOE that worked for him.
And what benefits are you talking about? studies show reduced athertic performance and recovery on Keto, not to mention bulking you put on less muscle. The benefits of Keto are really to do with epilepsy, and other neurological disorders/issues. So if you don't have any of those, there is no benefit of Keto above any other diet17 -
Here is the issue OP and OP defenders:
YOU may be able to eat all you want on the Keto diet and still lose weight without counting. However, different people want to eat different amounts. If they end up eating too much, they gain. In your case, you are not eating too much, so you are losing. Counting those calories or not, that's *kitten* CICO.
The issue was claiming it has magical properties. Not the diet.
People are here to learn, and spouting nonsense does not help that.25 -

I don't think anyone did tell you that.
If you've now lost 11lb in 7 weeks, some of that would indeed be fat, as well as some early water loss.
So if this WOE does suit you and you find it easy to eat at a deficit on it ( whether counting or not) then thats great for you.
Nobody argued against that.
Other WOE's are great for other people. Like me, for example.

I second this.
OP, the closest analogy I can come up with is to think of a dried sponge. It's light and compact. Once you soak it in water, it expands and becomes heavier since it's now retaining the water that was added.
Dry the sponge out and it once again becomes smaller and a lot lighter because it's lost the weight and volume of the water it contained.
Water weight works pretty much the same way in the body. Reduce the amount of retained water you're holding onto and your body will not only weigh less, but appear slimmer, too.
Not for a second saying you didn't also lose some fat along with it. If you are truly in a caloric deficit (whether you track your intake or not - the body really doesn't care either way) you will continue to see your weight drop, but in a less dramatic way.
I'm happy keto is working for you. My caveat is that at some point if your calories in start outstripping your calories out, you will find that your weight loss stalls or begins to creep back up. It's at that point that you'll have to revisit and tweak your current strategy.15 -

Referring to something as being "like magic" is a common usage in the English language. Much like saying someone "worked their magic" to achieve a certain result, it's well-known that actual magic wasn't really involved.
Here's a definition from Merriam-Webster that illustrates this:
: an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source
Both pitchers, although they are older, haven't lost their magic.
I would hope that an adult reading the above phrase about the pitchers would be able to identify that said pitchers do not actually possess supernatural powers, and wouldn't start an argument insisting that the person who used the phrase somehow believes that the pitchers are graduates of Hogwarts.
The issue is not that a commonly used and accepted phrase was used. The issue is people not accepting a phrase in common usage, incorrectly choosing to use a definition for the phrase that is not in keeping with the use of phrase in context, and ascribing intent by the OP to mislead others based on that incorrect information.
TL:DR: It's not the OP's fault people are choosing to misinterpret a commonly used phrase.18 -
6-9, maybe only 6 was water... that said reduced water retention does make one look thinner, as water takes up space and has volume
Naw man, he has a specific water reservoir built in him and that's where the water weight came from. This "your entire body holds water so losing water weight will make you look thinner" *kitten* is just some mumbo jumbo. All that science gobbledegook about "Carb intake being restricted causes glycogen stores in the muscles to be reduced. Glycogen is responsible for water retention, so when that is reduced so is water weight" can take a long walk off a short cliff.
We are talking about the magical endless food trough that keto allows here! Science is for nerds!

I think this is an unfair oversimplification of what both the OP and the many replies have been saying. Speaking for myself at least, my reaction to him using that phrase was taking into consideration his previous posts in this thread and trying to draw some conclusions.
Regardless, OP is doing keto and losing weight and feeling great and that's awesome. Other people don't do keto and are losing weight and feeling great and that's awesome. Today's Friday and that's awesome too.27 -

To the bolded:
OP did not say keto was working "like magic." OP literally said keto is magic. :Folk can knock keto all they want.some just don't like it when something other than CICO works, I can have bacon, fried eggs etc etc loads of mince with spices and chicken and veg a plenty ...no weighing etc and still the weight comes off you and you get thinner .its magic
As you have demonstrated, words matter. The context in which they are used also matters. And in this case - whether it was the OP's intention or not - his choice of wording, and everyone's response to it, was predicated by him ascribing magical properties to something that simply isn't magic.
As you well know, many new posters arrive here with all sorts of misinformation surrounding this and all manner of other ways of eating.
And, for me at least, if even one of them reads this thread (or the multitude of others just like it) and understands that there's absolutely no magic involved, then that's someone who has likely been saved some disappointment.
Most new posters come looking for a Magic Bullet. People here are just saying that keto (or anything else, btw) simply doesn't have one. Because it doesn't exist.29 -

Interesting that you give a whole digression about how you think an adult should be able to read the intent and connnotation of something, but the whole thing is based on actually altering the actual phrasing and removing the context.
OP said "its magic", not "like magic". OP also said "some just don't like it when something other than CICO works,". As the OP is saying a law of nature doesn't work (second law of thermodynamics) he is indeed appealing to a supernatural force. Now, one could forward the argument that he's merely mislabeling CICO to mean calorie counting, but given that ambiguity, I don't think your lesson in English idioms is warranted.36 -
I got a little too negative here which may have caused this whole thread to get derailed... my bad.
Just don't want misinformation being spread.
People cannot eat however much they want on a Keto diet and lose weight. The OP apparently can. You know why? Because him eating however much he wants is still in a caloric deficit. Could this be because fats are more satiating to him so he is eating less? Probably, but it doesn't matter.
Grats on the success. I'd suggest that just for kicks you continue the keto journey while actually logging your meals and compare that to the logs you kept while you were unsuccessful. THAT is where true learning and helpful advice will come from.19 -

In answer to previous question...7th week now, I'm not a hardened keto dieter as I do like a vodka , my point was I was stuck for weeks at nearly 13st till I tried keto .I now weigh 12'3 and have lost all my belly fat, 11 lbs of water weight though so the "experts " tell me 😂
No one said it was all water wegiht, though of the 11, I would venture to guess 6-9 were water.
9 out of the 11 is water? My jeans are now a 32 from 34, my neck is thinner.my face is thinner.my belly is not as fat and my legs are much much thinner.so yes it's all water. Goodness
6-9, maybe only 6 was water... that said reduced water retention does make one look thinner, as water takes up space and has volume
So you don't know in truth?
I am not sure why you are stuck on this point - of course nobody knows what the exact amount is - but that doesnt the change fact that part of your 11lb loss would of been water weight.
Nothing wrong with that - is often a feature of early larger than usual amounts.
Same happened to me, I remember losing about 4 lb in my first week - which then proceeded in following weeks at an average of about 1/2 lb per week.
That wasn't even doing keto - just minor changes and smaller portions.
Keto even more going to do this for reasons already explained

I think most non keto eaters feel the same as me - keto is great for those who like it
The pushback only comes when people make unrealistic claims of the " I can eat all I want and still lose" ilk or keto evangelists who seem to think keto is best for everyone.
Pretty much, except I'll add that I do believe that some can "eat all I want and still lose" on keto (especially early on), as I think keto can change how much people perceive they want, as well as preventing the mindless eating that for some of us was more of a problem than actual hunger.
I think you meant the claims that people ate more than maintenance and lost, and I totally agree.
.
Fair point.
Yes, individual people could find they can eat as much as they want - meaning they feel full and then naturally don't want to eat any more than their calorie allowance ( whether counting to it or not)
To me though 'you can eat as much as you want' seems to be implying you can eat unlimited quantities - which obviously is not the case on keto or any other WOE.

I'm not sure of the mechanics to be honest, but the "whoosh" effect is well known, and usually quite welcome when it happens. The human body is comprised of a high % water stored in tissues, cells etc, so when it goes, it doesn't come from just one place, like around the abdomen. Saying someone lost water weight isn't a put down or derogatory or demeaning towards the diet at all. It's still weight and volume that are gone. Which is nice, really nice.
The primary distinction (in my opinion) is that water weight can be lost and replaced at a much faster rate than weight lost or gained due to fat. Once you're working on maintaining, rather than losing weight, you'll see fluctuations up and down, sometimes fairly large, and quite normal for everyone.
So yes, loss of a large amount of water can indeed have an effect on your overall appearance. Nothing wrong with enjoying it, or discussing it as we folks here like to do. Keep doing what you're doing and enjoy the weightloss. It feels great.6 -

I understand that OP is excited that he found something that works for him, but I also think its a bit premature to call something magic after 11 pounds. I think its way too early to know whether or not this is sustainable. There are a ton of people on here who have sustained weight losses in the triple digits because they actually understand how and why weight loss works. They didn't magically lose weight, they kept a deficit until they hit maintenance. As others have stated, of the 11 pounds lost so far, a good percentage of that is probably water weight, and I am genuinely curious how OP is going to handle maintenance if he gets there. The reason people are responding the way they are is not because they hate keto, but I think people recognize that the ignorance behind the magical claim suggests that the weight loss may not be sustainable in the long run. I think you need to understand exactly why you are losing weight to actually keep it off.20

The other issue with Keto related water weight loss is it's only sustainable if you stay on Keto the rest of your life. There is no "maintenance" setting for it like there is with fat loss. If a person decides they ever in their life want to go off of Keto, they will regain the water weight they've lost from depleting their glycogen stores. So that's why a lot of us think it is not "real" weight. Because unlike the other water weight that's normally lost along with fat during weight loss, this will "whoosh" right back if the diet is ever left.9 -

That's how I read a large number of the posts. I've never had trouble losing weight, ever. I had never successfully kept it off until I had at least a basic understanding of why it was all happening.
Most of it had to do with my behavior.6 -
Folk can knock keto all they want.some just don't like it when something other than CICO works, I can have bacon, fried eggs etc etc loads of mince with spices and chicken and veg a plenty ...no weighing etc and still the weight comes off you and you get thinner .its magic
It’s not magic. Stop. I could gain fat and weight easily on keto eating 5k cals of bacon and eggs. Your still in a deficit if your losing weight and doing keto. It’s still governed by cico principles9
