It's time for the September 2019 Running Challenge!
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the August 2019 Running Challenge which can be found at: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10756951/august-2019-monthly-running-challenge#latest
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until August 1, 2019 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running ). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody elses Chapter 20.

I am in for 110 miles for September.
I'll let someone else think of a good monthly question.6 -
Thanks @kgirlhart for setting us up!
I'm in for 110km, stretch goal 115.
I'm useless at coming up with questions, which is why I hate interviewing people (something my work sometimes requires me to do **sigh**).
We're 2/3 of the way through the year, how are we all doing with our goals for the year?
8 -
my goal is to do 40miles7
-
Getting in on the 1st page! Woot!!
I am in for just 50 this month.
We are traveling more than half the month and I am heading into taper before my HM on the 15th so I am not sure just how much running will get accomplished. I do need to keep it up after the September HM though because I have another one in November to be ready for.6 -
Thanks @kgirlhart for getting September going!
My marathon plan is at the very beginning, so it is comforting to know it only adds up to just shy of 100 miles this month. I'll probably go over that, but I'll just pledge 100 miles and see where it ends up! Come on fall weather!!!!!!7 -
In it for September Goal for September is 116.8 miles, give or take a little.7
-
Thanks, @kgirlhart, for getting us started.
I'm in for 135k.6 -
As it cools down over here, I run a lot more.
September goal: 200mi9 -
Here I come, September, and I'm shooting for 70 miles!6

FOR THE NEW PEOPLES JOINING US (and some of the rest of you that need the reminder...):

Thanks for setting up this month @kgirlhart.
September is such a mixed bag for me. This September promises to be an especially busy one at work and I'm already stressed about it. But I love the weather here in September and the fall is the absolute best time for running. I (loosely) planned a hiking trip around a difficult date for me personally so I am looking forward to having some time away to help with that and step away from the stress for a bit.
All of that said - I have no idea on miles quite yet. I did plan out my speedwork and long runs for the next 7 weeks leading up to my two half marathons, but I didn't plan the daily miles so don't have a total number.
I'm going to take a wild stab right now and say 140 miles, which is just 10 more than this month's goal (which I'll be right at I think). I'll be back to update later.
Upcoming races:
9/7/2019 Arc Race Half Marathon, Liverpool, NY (not yet registered - looking less likely, but still a possibility)
10/5/2019 Dash for Democracy 5k, Fayetteville, NY (not yet registered but likely)
10/19/2019 I-35 Challenge KC Half Marathon, Kansas City MO
10/20/2019 I-35 Challenge DSM Half Marathon, Des Moines, IA
11/10/2019 Syracuse Half Marathon, Syracuse, NY
11/23/2019 Long Island Spartan Sprint, Bethpage, NY
Edited to add 5k race I forgot.

Thanks for starting the month @kgirlhart!
My next big goal is to get below 1:20 in the 10 Miler. Technically that is a November race, but I need to focus on that NOW to have a chance.5 -
@shanaber @RunsOnEspresso @HonuNui Eric is talking of Hawaii again. There is a tentative plan to go mid May to mid-late June. I was wondering if anyone else is planning a vaca? Thought perhaps we might even share an air B&B. We're still planning, nothing nailed down, but I'ma Amazon shop for a Magnum PI shirt for Eric.4

Hello. I am in for 50 miles in September.5

Haha! Monthly question!!!! @kgirlhart !!! (Come to Hawaii)
Best vacation you've had? And or where do you want to vacation and what do you wanna do on that holiday?4 -

West Caribbean Cruise in the late 90s.
I want to see the Northern Lights but most likely my next "vacation" (very loosely defined) will be "visit family"2 -
I'm in for zero miles this September.
But I'm keeping busy, no German, some biology (3 classes) and violin lessons. Keeping both eyeballs in my cats head and the worms out of his.... butt. 😀 With any luck I'll get a bs in biology May. Ya, I haven't really looked at the degree requirements, just winging it. Soo...
and thanks for setting us up @kgirlhart !9 -

Hello, I'm a new runner and signed up for my first race. I can't run the distance yet, but if push comes to shove I will just walk it.
My goal for the month is to do 50 kms.
I'm focused on running at the moment, but as a side note I would also like to get to a 140k steps in one week.

I've had so many good vacations that instead of listing the best one, I will list the one I was most surprised by. I went to Sri Lanka with my partner. We had 0 expectations and booked it on a whim. When I got there I was really surprised by how warm and friendly the people we met were. The food was delicious and breakfast was by far my favourite meal.Haha! Monthly question!!!! @kgirlhart !!! I’m going to be conservative and aim for an 80 mile goal this month. May revise this up if I decide to train for some races...6
-
Long time lurker finally joining in!
I start my training plan for my third marathon on Monday. I've decided to keep things a bit easier this time around. For my last marathon I used one of Hal Higdon's advanced plans to try and run a sub 4 time (I did it in 3:57:55!!) but the level of training really took it out of me and I'm not sure I want to do that again (at least not yet anyway!)
So this time I've decided to just run the marathon for the love of running and the pure enjoyment I get out of it, and not care about how long it takes me. Which means I've decided to loosely follow Hal Higdon's intermediate plan.
That puts my goal at 160km
I'm looking forward to enjoying some warmer Spring weather - you can add me to the list of NZ runners in the group

Looked at my work plan for next month and my job is trying to smother me again. The plan wants 205km, but that's not gonna happen. Will aim for 145km.
(Last month the plan wanted 170km, I wanted 130km, but *kitten* happened and eventually barely scraped 100... maybe I should aim higher.)Haha! Monthly question!!!! @kgirlhart !!! (Come to Hawaii)
Best vacation you've had? And or where do you want to vacation and what do you wanna do on that holiday?
Best vacation ever was my first trip to Fringe Festival in Edinburgh in 2014. I spent an entire month there just hanging out, watching the cheapest shows possible, surviving on home-made sandwiches, and building up to the HM distance for the first time.
To think of it, I thought the hills in Edinburgh were killer back then. I ran the same route two weeks ago and barely noticed them at all..14 -
Running plan calls for 115.5. I don't know if I have it in me to do that. But I'll set that as my goal.7
-
Good news is that my calf is way better now, so there is hope from my first half on Sept 14. Still have a couple of long runs to do, so I'm going to make my goal at about 80 this month.
As for best vacation - was Costa Rica way long ago - my husband and I rented a car and visited several areas- rain forests, beach, volcano, it was awesome. So many different Eco systems all in one place. Ate at local places and shopped at local stores..was truly an experience.
I couldn't possibly list just one place I still want to go - there are too many and I love to travel.
Next one though is a girls trip to Zihuatanejo in Mexico in November!
9 -
What is this 'vacation' you all speak of???8
-
I’m new to this app and group. I’m in for 40miles for September..I’m easing back into running from major arthritis flare up in both knees..12
