Yesterday I got to run 3.16 miles at the Minnesota Distance Running Association’s Victory Labor Day 5K. I hadn’t intended to run this race, except that when my dad and stepmother were planning their trip to visit from California, dad expressed interest in watching me race. This was the most convenient option available, so there we are.
Initially I'd figured this would be a chance to see if I could beat my March 5K PR, but after the Summer of Aches and Pains (I need a catchier name) that was definitely not happening. I’m happy with how I did, though, and my folks seemed to have a good time and got a better understanding of something I’ve come to love, so that’s all good.
It was a relatively low key race in some ways - 586 people finished the 10K and 286 finished the 5K, no longer races (although there was a kid's mile after the 5K), and not an overly large number of spectators. On the other hand, these were competitive races for USATF Minnesota, so there were some Serious Runners there. Suffice it to say that unlike my last race, the aid stations were not giving out cake.
I was a lot more relaxed than I have been before a lot of races - with the half marathon next weekend I had every intention of running this as slowly as necessary. I settled in behind a mom, dad, and daughter (around my age) running together at around 11’15” and decided to stick with them until the turnaround. The course was an out-and-back through a neighborhood I'm not really familiar with but wasn't enormously scenic, and I've largely decided not to listen to music during races, so mostly I eavesdropped shamelessly on my unofficial pace group.
After the turnaround I left mom and daughter behind (dad had taken off a while back) and started playing pass-the-next-runner. After a bit I found myself in a big gap so was running alone for a while, which was fine but a little lonely. I basically moderated my speed based on whether my knee and hip were hurting, but found enough energy to get a reasonably pain-free sprint into the finish line. My splits were 11'08", 10'50", 9'54" and 9'05", so I got some decent acceleration in over the back half.
Alas, no medals, but I did get a long-sleeve shirt that will be nice for lounging around the house now that summer is on its way out. I’m pretty well stocked on tech shirts so was pleasantly surprised that this one was cotton.
Post-race family photo!
Afterwards shower, brunch, then goodbyes as dad and SM took off for the airport. Next up this week we’ve got gym today, rest on Wednesday, 1.75 mile run to the gym on Thursday, rest Friday and Saturday, and FINALLY my first half marathon of the year. Woo! I'm feeling a little stiff today but not bad - my hip and glute have been aching a bit, but again, not bad. I've been doing some yoga and am hoping that a couple of *gentle* workouts will feel good.
Speaking of the half, I got a message from the friend of mine who is also running next weekend - it had been his idea for us to run this race together, but I had assumed that “together” meant we’d both run the same race at the same time, not that we’d literally be running together. Apparently I misunderstood and he wants to run together, even at my pokey planned pace of 12’00”, so I am very excited about that!

9/1 (yesterday) was the Tupelo Marathon. I thought I had my bile acid mal-absorption under control, but not so much in the 2 days before the race. So the morning of the race was no exception. They did not have chip timing at the start, so everyone had the same start time. I was in the porta-pot and lost a couple min. before even getting across the start line. Then lost about 10 more min. throughout the race in porta-pots. Of course, this also means I was losing a ton of water and electrolytes. That caused cramps later in the race. In the end, I finished with my 2nd worst time of 5:55:57. But at least I finished within the 6 hr. cut-off, and that means it still counts.
A successful finish under the cut-off counts as a good marathon in my book.
Well done!!!4 -
@MegaMooseEsq congrats on your race - sounds like you had a fun time.
@T1DCarnivoreRunner congratulations on finishing another marathon! It definitely counts! Total respect for anyone who finishes a marathon, especially with cramps and gut issues.
@HonuNui great to see you check in and share photos with us. Someone else (sorry I can't remember and can't search right now) just shared snorkeling pics too and I love them (and am jealous).

Treadmill warm-up before strength training this morning. Felt like a very harsh reality to start this work week on a Tuesday with an early morning at the gym. I actually stopped my watch at 2.98 miles because the treadmill said over 3 and I forgot to verify what my Garmin said. Oh well, I'll have to live with it and it rounds to 3 in my spreadsheet to the tenths (so I really didn't need to admit this, but you all know it's bothersome ).8 -

Ran this evening after a crappy day. I made a mistake at work and felt like a fool. My ego was bruised and my confidence was shaken, but no real harm done. Proud that despite having a bad day, I didn’t allow the mistake to be an excuse not to run. Also stayed within my caloric limit which is still at a deficit right now. Usually when I’m upset, I let myself eat my sorrows away. This was a good step for me today.
Hope everyone is having a good week so far.13 -
I found you and caught up! My September running goal is... I don't know. I'll run a few days this week, then I'm going to start a Garmin Coach 10k plan on Sunday. I have no races on the horizon and I've not followed one of these before so I'm curious, but I have no idea how many miles this will give me. I know!
My September Goal is to follow the plan with consistency.
So far, I have 0.88 miles for the month. I am very jet-lagged and slept poorly last night, so didn't even walk the dogs this morning. Tonight I plan to get to bed at my normal (early) time and hope to sleep well, and get back into routine after our vacation.
Well done @MegaMooseEsq and good luck this weekend!
Congratulations @T1DCarnivoreRunner! Finishing a(nother) marathon is an incredible accomplishment. Way to go!9 -

I could us a run.
*hugs* Right after I read this I went to wipe my hand on my pants thinking it was just wet from rinsing out the cat food can, and got a big slime of wet food on my butt. Good morning!
Oh man..I'm sorry! Haha!0 -
September Goal: 160km
01/9: 5.11
02/9: 8.11
03/9: 6.73
Total KM run: 19.95
When my alarm went off this morning I could hear the rain and the wind outside so I decided to get an extra hour sleep and hope the weather was better this evening. Unfortunately it was still pretty miserable after I finished work, so I decided to stay indoors and got my run done on the treadmill. I usually like running in the rain during the summer, but the combination of cold, rain, wind and darkness doesn't quite have the same appeal.
@MegaMooseEsq Fantastic job on your 5K! Good luck at your HM this weekend

I spent some time making a training schedule this weekend & today- day 2 I did Not want to run. I made myself & I feel so much better. I’m looking forward to a tough strength training session this afternoon😀5

7.5 miles this morning. Technically a Tempo workout, but only 1 mile was supposed to be at Tempo pace (8:36). The rest was WU/CD, drills, or Easy pace. Not a workout I would really consider Tempo, but that's what the plan called for. Guess it's because it is still at the beginning of the training plan. Oh well, felt pretty good.

no run. i have some sort of imbalance going on. left outer hip is sore, right inner knee is sore. it might have to do with 2 days at renfair in not so great shoes.
so ultra training is on hold because i don't want to push it with long runs. in the meantime, i'll be working on short slow runs with speed demon6 -
September goal: 110 miles
9/1: 8.86 miles
9/3: 6.31 miles
9/4: 6.25 miles
21.42/110 miles completed
I ran 6.25 miles this morning. It was kind of a meh run. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as yesterday's run. I was disappointed that the new Zombies Run episode hadn't been released. They release on Wednesday, but it didn't release until after my run today (or probably during). The weather wasn't as nice as yesterday. I started off feeling kind of stiff and slow. But the run did improve as I ran and all in all it wasn't a bad run.
I keep getting an email reminder to register for a 5K that is in October. It is one I have run the last 2 years. Part of me wants to do it and part of me isn't sure. I wish I could find a 10K close by. There is one in October, but it is 75 miles away which is really too far for getting up and driving there the morning of, but not in a place where I would want to go stay the night. Plus they also have a HM and if they are offering both I would rather run a half.

I ran with the dogs this morning. Jackson actually was more intent on running than Kira, but they both did great considering they've not run for a month. I'm on the board with a real run again!9 -
No run today, but I did go explorering at lunch in the area around my new job. Found out my building has a tiny indoor mall (like 5 or 8 stores) and the mall has a 1/5 mile walking track on an elevated floor. Its carpet and definitely aimed at mall walkers but for bad weather I might use it for my lunch walks. I covered 2.15 miles, my target for lunch walks is normally 3-4 miles, whatever I can cover in an hour, but I stopped for a drink on this one.
Friday I am going to try and find the route to the park that supposed to have nice running paths.
Saw some odd things, picks below the cut:10 -

So they said it was now Fall and that it should be cooler... they lied!
I know some of you have cooler weather now but we are baking here with heat into the triple digits and no real cool down over night. It was 92 when I finished my run this morning and we are now under a heat advisory. The only good thing is that the humidity is down below 50%. Which is great for running but is not so good for the fire danger. The run, while hot was not bad. I relied on the drinking fountains on the trail for water which wasn't wise so I was really dry and thirsty when I got home.
Hobbes the Vizsla hasn't gotten to run in what seems like forever. Between not running and no agility classes right now he is getting a little stir crazy especially in the evenings so I have had to break out some challenging mind games and sport dog activities that we can do in the house. I am hoping on our trip we will be able to get a few short runs in leading up to the race. Since I will be tapering they don't have to be long just something and outside.
I was finally able to check the weather forecast for my HM on the 15th. High for the day of 80 but 54 overnight so it should be a cool (6:30am) start and for most of the race. I am not sure I will know what to do with such cool weather, I may actually get cold! Oh and there is a 10% chance of rain. Unlikely but that would be ok too.

9.04: Scheduled Rest Day
Had to get up at 4am to attend a work meeting. Then had to run some errands. Today was a scheduled rest day from running, but between walking to the subway twice today and coming home, as well as some other errands, I still have 16,000 steps. I did some weight lifting and used the foam roller. Now I'm going to brush my teeth and head to bed once the cat finishes her dinner...heaven forbid it doesn't sit out quite long enough and warm to the exact temperature she likes it at...I joke...this cat is everything to me and I'll stay up until 3am if I need to.
@MegaMooseEsq I enjoyed reading your race report!!
@BeverlyW1108 I'm glad you got your run in and you feel good about it!
@T1DCarnivoreRunner I'm sorry to hear your race didn't go as hoped, but you should be very proud of yourself for sticking with it. Very happy to hear you finished under the cutoff time!!6 -
3.96 miles yesterday. Plan was for 5 miles, but my CGM expired a few min. after starting, so had little information about BG. I don't always feel lows, but I did during the run and took a bunch of glucose tablets. Felt like I was going to pass out as I stumbled home and confirmed the low.
5.54 miles today.

Work had me very stressed out and tired today, so I nearly bailed on going to marathon/HM group tonight. As always, I knew if I didn't go I would really regret it and I would be glad once it was done so off I went. The workout was long intervals of 6-8-4 minutes with 3 minutes recovery between. Repeated for a second set with 2 minutes recovery between. Except for the second 6 minute interval was really 7.5 minutes because the coach got distracted talking to the people who stopped after 1 set. Bonus time, how wonderful! This was a really long workout, and then we did 4-8 sprints after (I did 4) and our cooldown. It was solidly dark when we left so it really seems like summer is over now.
Sorry to @shanaber and the rest of you still struggling with heat. I was almost chilly tonight before we got started and I noticed during the workout - hey, I'm not completely soaking wet with sweat! What a change.

I joined a workshop through the runners association that started tonight. Ten week coached training program to help improved endurance and pace for 5k. There were several different groups. Some groups were for new runners to work up to 5k and others who can only run one mile but want to increase distance.
My group can already run continuously for 5k and we did our pace test tonight. I ran at 11:49 pace which put me as the slowest runner in the group. I was also the newest runner in the group. They have published a training plan and I’m feeling good about having a sense of direction.15 -

^^^ this! Definitely no laughing here! I understand how you feel, not many months ago I was also feeling in awe of a lot of the machines posting huge numbers and/or amazing speeds which I will never achieve. It's all about working out that the only person each of us is competing against is ourself :-D
