September Goal: 160km
02/9: 5.11
Total KM run: 5.11
This morning was my first pre-dawn run in a long time! I've spent the last few winter months either running after work while there's still a little light and a few degrees warmer, or inside on the treadmill. I just haven't been able to face the cold dark mornings. But I figured since it is now officially Spring and I'm back into an actual training plan it's time for me to get back into my morning run schedule.
I forgot how nice it is to run in the early morning - hardly any people or traffic. I also forgot to wear gloves Luckily it was just a short run today.
Vacations
I'm very fortunate to have travelled quite extensively around the world so I've had many memorable trips. One of the standouts would have to be Africa. I spent a month camping on safari through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe about 15 years ago and I've never experienced anything else like it. I'm dying to go back and do it again, but next time I think I'll go "glamping"
I'm also looking forward to another dream vacation that I have booked for February. I'm heading to Egypt for a few weeks via Istanbul. I can't wait for this trip. I have dreams of running along the corniche in Alexandria and along the banks of the Nile
Wow those sound like awesome vacations! I am not a fan of real camping, but those locations sound like great places. I assume glamping is in a camper or cabin? That I could do.1 -
Started Sept off good. Still getting use to ATL humidity and hills. Made my NRC weekly and August running challenges.. Don’t know if my knees will let me run 10K’s again😕🙁
Donna aka #rundmc#
I assume Atlanta == ATL? If so then you can at least look forward to winter soon and much lower humidity, and being that far south probably not that cold. I used to live in TN and winters were much milder than there are here in Pittsburgh. I assume Atlanta is about the same.0 -
5 mi Easy run was the plan today. Couldn't help but do 6.2 (well technically 6.5) to show solidarity for my bro running a 10K race in Peachtree City. But my run was truly easy, and it felt good. HR averaged only 116. Hills didn't bother me at all. Only thing that would have been better if it was cooler. But that will come.
8 -
@Scott6255 I can't even imagine running 6.2 miles and having my HR average 116! Not sure what mine averaged when I did the 10K in July, but it was probably more like 150. LOL Maybe, one day.......2
-
@rheddmobile That sounds like an "interesting" race. How many miles to you think you will be running?
@kgirlhart I have never had an issue with not being able to eat enough. It's a constant struggle for me to maintain a healthy weight. Running is the only activity I have found that helps me with that. But, I have been within the same 5 pound range since April. Unfortunately, that range is still about 15 pounds higher than my goal weight. So, my goal for the rest of the year is to get under 150 pounds. (Goal is 135. Currently at 155.)
@ContraryMaryMary I hope you are feeling better!2 -
Ok, ok, I'm in! I'm training for a half on Oct. 3rd so I think I should run around 80 miles this month. BUT...if something happens and I need to back off on my runs, I will. One thing I've learned is to listen when my body says slow down or take a break...before it breaks.
Welcome! The fall (assuming you are in the northern hemisphere) is a great time to race!0 -
I got up "early" this morning to get out and do my run before it got too hot. I did hit the snooze a lot more than I intended and didn't get up until a little after 7. I had one cup of coffee and got out at 7:50. According to Garmin, it was 66°F with 83% humidity. I looked back and, while I walked quite a bit in August, I only ran 2 days...the 12th and 15th. Geeze. So, I decided to take it easy today. My plan called for 20 - 25 minutes of running. Doing the Galloway method, I did 3/1 minutes of run/walk for 2 miles - 26:14 minutes. That calculates out to a 13:03 pace. I'll take that for now. Hopefully more consistent running this month with see vast improvements on that number.
Sept 1 - 2 mile walk
Sept 2 - 0.6 mile walk......2 mile run
Month to date: 4.6 miles/50 miles7 -
9-1 4k recovery
9-2 7k easy
September Total: 11k
September Goal: 135k
January Total: 131k
February Total: 159.5k
March Total: 183k
April Total: 126k
May Total: 128k
June Total: 161.5k
July Total: 151k
August Total: 133k
Monthly average: 146.6k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Mondays are usually golf days, but with no golf due to the holiday, took advantage of a run instead. Glad I had run yesterday, because yesterday's pains gave way to today's less than usual niggles.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K - 31:34 chip time; 31/77 overall; second male 65 and older (no official category)
7-27 Solon Home Days 5K - 31:11 chip time; 95/141 overall; 4/6 age group (male)
8-31 Race for Freedom 5k - 31:37 chip time; 32:00 Garmin time; Third Place male 60 and older
9-14 Gift of Life 5k - off the schedule; insufficient recovery time
10-13 Haunted Hustle 5k5 -
September goal 100 miles
Hill repeats today: 8x up a nearby hill that's big enough for me to call it by name. The trip back down was slower for recovery, and I purposely picked up at least one piece of trash each time to throw away at the trash can at my turnaround point. So the place got cleaned up and I got my workout done before all of the first day of school torture, I mean, ceremonies & meetings.
It was interesting to me how I sometimes have trouble going up that hill even once during a run. I wasn't sure I could do the plan-prescribed 8 repeats... but one at a time, I did them all at a purposeful, reasonably fast pace without any laziness, and finished each one within a 3-second range (1:36-1:39).
Question #2: my goal is to drop the ridiculous 4-5 kg I picked up in the USA over the summer. I'm doing it the same way that's worked before - eat reasonably (as in healthier and less of it) and keep working out. I may have to have a procedure over the next few months that will take me away from running for 6ish weeks, so that may complicate things, but I'll deal with that as it comes.12 -
@Scott6255 Did you sign up for the Atlanta Publix 13.1 or 26.2? I just signed up for the 13.1 March 1st this year.
**I had to edit this post 3 times before I finally tagged the correct person. I wish MFP would make tagging easier within a thread.1 -
@Lazy_Bones_85 no, the annual trip to Peachtreein October is only chance I get to go to Atlanta. But I am signed up for the Dallas marathon in December.3
-

Donna aka #rundmc#
The hills in ATL are deceitful. But you have 10 months to get ready for the Peachtree Road Race, the biggest 10K race in the world. Starts at Lenox Mall and finishes in Piedmont Park.

So I'm loosely following a cross between a 10miler and HM Hal Higdon plan for my upcoming races. I'm on week 4 and am doing fine with the runs except the speedwork days. I struggle and feel like I'm going to die during them. I've been doing 8-10 1/2M repeats at 1M-5K pace. I copied all the workouts into my calendar on my phone so I didn't have to reference the plan. Anyway, I pulled up the website last night to check something and realized only then that 400Ms are QUARTER MILES not HALF MILES. Well dumb *ss here has been running double the interval length- sometimes 5 miles at better than 5K pace. No wonder my HR was hitting 205 and I really felt like I was dying. Because I was and by some unknown intervention or reason, my ticker didn't explode.13

Yea, but think how much easier your next speedwork days will feel!3 -

Curse the metric system 😉2 -

Plus, now you know you can survive a max heart rate above 200!😂3 -

Today's 9 miles (starting this month Strong!) are recorded by Fitbit with an average 169 bpm heart rate. 116 is a brisk walk. I'd like to see 150 averages for training runs, but don't want to actually slow down enough to make it happen. I had forgotten I was trying to limit speed, too... I'll have to set up the other pre-set workout button on the treadmill to support that. I'll give that back to the husband if he asks, but I don't think he even knows how to program it...

monthly question #2 weight loss goal by December? And how do you plan on making that happen?
I'd like to get back to presurgery weight. I think that's about 5 pounds, but feels like 10. So it might be 10 in gained fat, with 5 loss of muscle.
How? Embrace better. Hang out with you guys in the eat better thread, try to make plans. I was gonna make more apple bread today but got distracted. My oldest son came by (estranged, 27) and got kicked out of his dads for drugs. Some sob story about how he lost his phone and wanted me to buy him one, waiting on a job offer. Had some rare change he stole from me 10+ years ago to sell back to me, guess he forgot where he stole it from. It amazingly was now worth 1500$ from the 5$ at best when I had it. Just odd stuff you buy to show your kids ya know, Mercury dime, war coins, 2$ bill with the red ink. Today's lock changing day to automatic locks and one digital.
And my cat barfed wet salmon cat food on the cloth couch. Any suggestions how to un-fish it? Gross.
I could us a run.18 -

Ok. Made me go back and look. When I did the 10K in July, my average HR was 166, with a max of 207. @Lazy_Bones_85 and @Tramboman Guess I now know I can survive with a HR over 200 too!0 -
I didn't run today, hellish day at work, so today can be a rest day. I MUST get up early tomorrow to run.
monthly question #2 weight loss goal by December? And how do you plan on making that happen?
Ideally 20lb but we'll see! To do that I will run as much as possible, count my calories and keep the alcohol consumption low, tough to do when every work function and social involves drinking, and they can be three times a week!
@Elise4270 Your day sounds worse than mine, sorry you had all that, hope tomorrow's better! As for a fishy couch, I'd suggest burning it because BLEUGH4 -
Today’s Labor Day 10K was one of my slowest, significantly more than last year. My weather app said we had 90% humidity at 7am today, so with the heat, I decided to just take it slow. I also reminded myself that when I ran this race last year, I was 3 weeks out from my marathon and in much better shape, so I’m not going to beat myself up too much about it.
Which brings me to question 2: I gained more weight than I cared for after I finished my last marathon. I’d like to lose 10 lbs by the end of the year. I will be running more since I am training for another marathon, and I am going to try to be more purposeful with my eating. I read a book about marathon nutrition last time I trained, and it was really helpful.5 -
I’m hoping to run later tonight. Not sure how far I’ll go yet. Yesterday was rest day, and I’m kind of hankering to go long (or at least long for me).
monthly question #2 weight loss goal by December? And how do you plan on making that happen?
I’m still in the weight loss portion of my journey. Running started for me as a way to burn more calories than walking. But now I’m hooked. It’s all about seeing what I’m capable of. I’m currently about 5 lbs away from reaching the top weight in my BMI range 131. That’s my first goal but I refuse to put a timeline on it. I’m currently losing about one pound per month and I don’t feel deprived in my food choices. So, I’ll stick with my current way of eating (mostly DASH) until I see a reason to change things up. My actual goal weight is 125 which is still at the top end of my BMI range but gives me a little wiggle room. (I’m 5’1”). I guess it’s possible I may reach a healthy BMI in December, but I just don’t know yet.4 -
Hi group! I missed the end of the month on vacation. We went to Southern California. No running, but went hiking in Runyon Canyon one day. It was in the mid 80's but the drier air made it so nice!!
I made my August goal before I left town. And this month, the mileage is quite a bit higher. My plan calls for 84 miles. Usually I don't plan runs on vacation, but I got invited to speak at a conference in Prague so my husband and I are headed back out of town in 3 weeks. We usually travel several times a year, but this late summer-fall is busier for us that usual. We can't afford to skip another week with the HM coming up, so we are running in Prague. I know, sounds miserable!! Tough life!
Favorite vacation? I love traveling and usually my favorite is the one I just got back from or the one I'm about to go on!! I did love Iceland so much. Someone else mentioned how beautiful it is there, and that is the truth! Also, Maui is amazing!!
9/1: 3 miles
9/2: 4 miles
Sept total: 7 miles
Sept goal: 84 miles

@Elise4270 big hugs going out to you! Kidd can be cruel, especially your own.
As far as cat puke, my wife's cat does that almost every day (not salmon though) I have found Resolve carpet cleaner (in spray bottle) has worked the best.2 -
@marisap2010 Sounds like not ideal conditions for a 10K. But, you did it and survived!
@Elise4270 Hope your day gets better. Only thing I can think of to help the couch is maybe Fabreeze for fabric. It seems to work on odors really well.1 -
September Goal: 160km
01/9: 5.11
02/9: 8.11
Total KM run: 13.22
I had trouble sleeping last night so when my alarm went off at 5am I had to really make myself get out of bed instead of just hitting the off button. I procrastinated for about 20 minutes, but finally convinced myself to get out there. It's supposed to rain this afternoon so I figured I'd be better off going now. The first half was pretty cold with a brisk head wind, but the upside to that is I got the tailwind on the way home which has all the uphills.
Monthly question #2 - I've been maintaining a 40kg (88lb) loss for about 2 years, but I've had a 2kg (5lb) creep in the last few months that I'd really like to step on before it gets any higher. I also have, according to my physio, "shockingly weak" glutes and a low muscle mass, so I'd like to lose a little bit of fat and gain some muscle. I need to be more consistent with my weight training. I'm aiming for at least twice a week. I also need to stop having so many treats throughout the day - the little bites of muffin or a biscuit/cake/chocolate bar at afternoon tea that I've been having almost daily lately really add up5 -
@Teresa502 The Scotland pics are gorgeous!
@Avidkeo Yay for Spring! Good luck with the move on Friday
@shanaber My worst trip was probably to Mykonos, Greece. We came back to our hotel room after a day out and found we'd been robbed. When we complained to management we were accused of telling lies to get the staff in trouble. They confiscated our passports and made us wait in some dodgy office for hours. We finally managed to convince them to give our passports back after enduring hours of verbal abuse. Once we had our passports we ran out of there and straight to a pay phone to call the police. The police told us we were in the wrong and we should go back to the hotel and pay for anything we still owed! We hung up that phone and ran as fast as we could straight to the ferry and took the first boat off that island!
@ContraryMaryMary I hope you feel better soon
@PastorVincent As I've gotten older I'm less of a fan of real camping too! Glamping is basically a cabin made out to look like a tent - the important part is you get a real bed!
@polskagirl01 WTG on the hill repeats! Also, you're awesome for picking up rubbish on your run
@Elise4270 I hope your day gets better. I find baking soda and some white vinegar and a little dish soap can be good for scrubbing/cleaning things like that4 -
ETA - @Teresa502, love the pictures, especially the first one that looks like possibly early sunset with the clouds just tinged a bit pink. Beautiful!
@Lazy_Bones_85 - as I was reading your post initially I was wondering which of the Higdon plans you were following that had 800m repeats instead of 400m... 😁 Hope your next interval run is much better!
@elise4270 - sorry about the 'visit' with your eldest... and I am no help for the salmon smell. We have leather couches that are really easy to clean fortunately. I think the baking soda suggestion that @kirstymn suggested is what I would try first.
@martaindale - glad you had a nice time in So. Cal. You must have been here before the heat and humidity set in this last week. Also getting to go to Prague for business is pretty awesome! Hope you get in some good running there!
@kirstymn - what a terrible experience! I have heard about others having issues in Greece but wow! that is really bad. I would have headed to the nearest ferry too!
Have you all noticed that they got rid of the 'Woo' button finally?
I had such a better run today than the slog fest yesterday! I almost didn't go... especially after the disappointing run yesterday. I had almost convinced myself today's run would be equally terrible and that I should just stay in where it was cooler. I ended up getting out pretty late thinking that letting the humidity drop a bit below 90% would be a good idea since it seems to make it difficult for me to breathe properly (it was around 65% when I finally left). Not saying it wasn't hot, it was. Probably hotter than yesterday because I went out so much later. But with the lower humidity and a lovely breeze for most of the run, this run was pretty great all the way through.
Date........Miles.......Total
