Off topic, but y'all like pictures so here is a sunset I took recently with my Canon SL3. I am pretty happy with how it came out. I do wish there had been reds and oranges, but there is no controlling the weather! Picture in the fold:
This is what is known as an "HDR Photo" - that is I took multiple pictures of the same scene at different exposures and then combined them so that I could get "high dynamic range" - your eye does something very similar to allow you to see a greater range of light/dark than a single picture can show. I am still teaching myself HDR, but I think this came out pretty good:
And this is what is known as a "meet" - when two trains pass (or meet) on two different tracks (hopefully!) at the same time. This is not an HDR, just a normal shot for the train lovers among us:

Missed my morning run on Wednesday - it was raining heavily and all my wet weather gear is buried in the back of my wardrobe! Ended up making myself go out after work even though I hate running at that time of the day, although it didn't suck as much as usual.
Hoping to do my long run Saturday as the husband is out for the day and I have nothing else planned.7 -
@MegaMooseEsq Great race report. Glad your dad and SM were able to see you race. It's easier to be supportive when you have first hand knowledge of what is going on. Good luck on your HM this weekend.
@katharmonic When I run on the treadmill, I always take the treadmills word for the distance and not my Garmin. I don't have a foot pod and I know that the Garmin is way off, based on the time and distance it shows. I just use it to get a more accurate calorie burn count, as I know my treadmill way overestimates that.2 -
@PastorVincent Interesting sculpture. When I first saw the picture, I thought it was some sort of off satellite. Glad you have a place for your lunch walks that is out of the weather. Love your recent pictures above too.
@dcolander No one will laugh. This is a great group.2 -

Thanks. I need to go back to that statue and take a picture of the plaque because I can not recall what it says! 🙄

Don’t laugh at my numbers compared to what I’m seeing. I’m proud of myself hopeful to make 40 by the end of the month
You're doing great! I've only topped 40 miles a couple of months this year due to injuries, and last year my starting goals were to run a continuous mile, run three times a week, and, eventually, the mileage started adding up. Start where you are, do what you can!5 -
9-1 4k recovery
9-2 7k easy
9-3 6k easy
9-4 rest
9-5 7k moderate

June Total: 161.5k
July Total: 151k
August Total: 133k
Monthly average: 146.6k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.

September goal: 110 miles
9/1: 8.86 miles
9/3: 6.31 miles
9/4: 6.25 miles
9/5: 6.25 miles
27.67/110 miles completed
I ran 6.25 miles this morning. It was a better run than yesterday. I ran the same route and the weather was about the same, but it was just a better run. I did get to play Zombies Run and that made it fun. And I turned on the chases so had some speed work in there. It is definitely staying darker longer so I know that means fall is on the way. I'm just ready for some fall like temperatures. Of course then it won't be too long before I'm complaining about the cold.
@dcolander No one in this group would laugh at anyone else's mileage or pace or anything like that. This is a very supportive group made up of runners of all levels.
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17

6 miles today in my new Birthday shoes! They are green, and a little narrow in the toebox. https://www.endasportswear.com/ They are fairly minimal, but a little stiffer than my other minimal shoes. At 4mm, they have a higher drop than anything else I'm wearing. I didn't really notice that they weren't flat. They are not slippery on the treadmill. I expect they'll be even better outdoors.
Am I the only person whose feet get smaller during a run? I think my default is poor circulation with slightly swollen feet and running gets those fluids moving. Buying a size up just means my poor feet start sliding around in my shoes after a couple of miles. Not good.
Looking forward to a 5k on Sunday, but will need to adjust the schedule a little to keep the mileage on track. Not sure yet how to handle that, but not convinced I need to stress about it, either. It's at the zoo. My friend will be wearing a lemur costume. I have a squid costume to run in. I hope I don't trip on a tentacle. It's a little long on me, because I am short. It will be like running in a sleeping bag. I am not certain this was a good idea. It's only a 5k, and I'm not where I'd need to be to PR it. I just hope I have fun.

@autumnblade75 that sounds like so much fun. Pictures please!
@PastorVincent the sunset photo is beautiful, you're very skillful.
Terrible run after work today. Went with my boyfriend who is fast out of the gates and then slows right down. It was too fast for me and I got a stitch and then though I was going to throw up. That lasted 4k, which took me fully 28 minutes, then suddenly I was fine and smashed the last k in 4.30 mins, which is super fast for me. Odd slightly sick now.

I hope it's not too late the join this month. B-)
I'm in for 140 miles. I've run 15 miles in so far.
I truly meant to stay active in this group through the summer but as you know, I failed.
My summer running results:- May - 74 miles out of 105 mile goal
- June - 38 miles out of a 100 miles goal (OUCH!)
- July - 91 miles out of a 100 mile goal (better!)
- August - 129 miles out of a 115 mile goal (YES!!!)
My summer accomplishments:- May 18th - finished the Superior Spring 50K in 7:52:09. My goal was to finish within the cutoff of 9 hours since my spring training took a turn for the worse in April with Achilles issues. I was very happy with that result even though it was an hour slower than the year before. Too bad I wasn't in shape, the course was fast, and the temps were perfect at 30F to 40F. We ran in light rain, sleet and snow.
- July 13th - finished the Eugene Curnow Trail Marathon in 7:00:49 - so close to breaking 7 hours! This was a bear of a race for me. Between the May race and this race I averaged less than 10 miles per week, this course had some very tough sections, and it was HOT. I started out well, but by mile 15 I knew all I could do was hike it in. At mile 23 or so I did try to start running again, hoping to break 7 hours, but it was not to be. I'm very happy with the result, however.
- My recovery from tendon repair surgery is complete and I never think about it when I'm running.
- I finished running all of the roads in my town. My estimate is that I ran 300 miles to accomplish that over the last 18 months. Now I'm working on the adjacent towns and the town where we keep our boat in the summer (at 93%!)
- I was volunteer photographer for 4 races this summer. Got some great shots!

- We've sailed more this summer than we have since we started in 2016 and we still have several weeks left in the sailing season.
Upcoming races:- Sept 7th - Outrun Homelessness 5K - The 5th annual and I've run every one. I had planned on training for 5K this time but haven't. Still, I'm in better shape than I was for the last one and though I've done no speedwork, I might have a chance at a PR.
- Sept 21 - Surly Loppet Trail Half Marathon - my third year at this one and I think it will be my best yet.
- Oct 12 - Big Woods Half Marathon - I may skip this, or drop down to the 5K because the following day I have a race which is more important to me, which is the:
- Oct 13 - Loopet Loppet 12 hour race. Last year I ran 42 miles officially (GPS logged 43.8 miles - everyone I talked to said their GPS measured more distance) which is my distance PR. This year my goal is 50 miles on my GPS. It was this race last year where my tendon in my right foot ruptured, resulting in surgery and 3 months off.
- Oct 26 - Glacier Hills 50K in South Dakota - if I can swing it with my wife

Haha! Monthly question!!!! @kgirlhart !!! (Come to Hawaii)
Best vacation you've had? And or where do you want to vacation and what do you wanna do on that holiday?
@Elise4270 it's hard to pick a favorite, but I do know what my wife and I have at the top of our list for a future vacation. Travel to somewhere in the Mediterranean or Adriatic Seas, such as Croatia, charter a sailboat and sail around the area for a week or two.6 -
monthly question #2 weight loss goal by December? And how do you plan on making that happen?
I'm at 215 pounds right now (Sailing causes wait gain) and my goal is to get to 200 by December. How? By finally sticking to the plan!
Actually the way this summer has been, I'm happy it's "only" 215.3 -
Oh, I tried to post my goal and a summary of my summer but MFP decided it needs to approve the post. Hopefully it gets posted.
Nevermind, I see it now.2 -
@Teresa502 The Scotland pics are gorgeous!
@Avidkeo Yay for Spring! Good luck with the move on Friday
@shanaber My worst trip was probably to Mykonos, Greece. We came back to our hotel room after a day out and found we'd been robbed. When we complained to management we were accused of telling lies to get the staff in trouble. They confiscated our passports and made us wait in some dodgy office for hours. We finally managed to convince them to give our passports back after enduring hours of verbal abuse. Once we had our passports we ran out of there and straight to a pay phone to call the police. The police told us we were in the wrong and we should go back to the hotel and pay for anything we still owed! We hung up that phone and ran as fast as we could straight to the ferry and took the first boat off that island!
@ContraryMaryMary I hope you feel better soon
@PastorVincent As I've gotten older I'm less of a fan of real camping too! Glamping is basically a cabin made out to look like a tent - the important part is you get a real bed!
@polskagirl01 WTG on the hill repeats! Also, you're awesome for picking up rubbish on your run
@Elise4270 I hope your day gets better. I find baking soda and some white vinegar and a little dish soap can be good for scrubbing/cleaning things like that
That's Glamping with a capital G!!!
And here I thought I was stepping it up with my camping set. This is how I've camped the night before my last two trail races:

@Avidkeo congrats on the job! I tend to be skeptic too. I want science & studies, not anecdotes and promises. I want to understand the physiological reasons it works. On the other had, when I started taking glucosamine for my knee it was not backed by studies, but through personal testing over a long time, I've come to believe it helps. I agree that benefits could be the result of the placebo affect, or massaging for topicals. After my 50K on the 18th of May, assuming equal pain in my quads, I plan on rubbing CBD cream on one quad and regular cream on the other to see if I notice a difference. While it is unregulated, reputable manufacturers do submit their products for independent testing.
Oh let me know how it goes - for science! I think one reason I'm a skeptic about it working is that the chances of the oil oenetrating the layers of the skin, to get deep enough to the muscle to work... That's not how skin works. So I'm very curious how it goes. Eta did a bit of reading and from what I can see most of the CBD creams also have a lot of menthol so have the same effect as non CBD creams designed for sore muscles. Does this one have menthol or similar? Either way hope it works!
Dragging this back from the May thread... @Avidkeo my experience has been that CBD cream did nothing for me but make my skin soft and smooth. I used it on one quad after my 50K, and a regular cream on the other quad. No difference. More importantly, unless I can understand just how this oil is supposed to travel through skin, fat, blood, etc, and somehow get to where I want it, it just doesn't make sense that it would work topically.
The CBD pills did have an effect on me. I slept so much deeper! I'd like to take them every night but at $1 per pill for the cheapest I could find...no.
My experiment with CBD is over.3 -

9.01: 4.5M Easy (4.5)
9.02: 4.5M Easy&Intervals (9)
9.03: 4.5M Easy (13.5)
9.04: Scheduled Rest Day
9.05: 4.5M Pace (18)
Ran today on the treadmill because it was 95 out and I would never have been able to run at my goal pace. Run went fine even though I feel like I’m cheating by skipping the heat and the hills outside.
I’ve still been cutting calories and I see a difference on the scale. The issue? I crave canned tuna fish like crazy. I’ve eaten probably 20 cans in a month. It’s the only thing I want when I finish a run. And I don’t know how much is too much regarding the mercury in canned tuna.
Glad to see you back and happy to read the race reports @7lenny7!6 -

In a couple-few years, I hope to replace my SUV with something like a Jeep Gladiator. If I do that, I very well might try camping again the way you have it there. There are some dark sky sites I would like to visit once I finish rebuilding my astrophoto setup.
BUT NO MORE TENT CAMPING ON THE GROUND. #donewiththatgame
To date, I have NEVER been camping when it has not rained. Most times a torrential downpour. More than once flooded out. And yes been camping many times, though it has been a decade or more since my last time.
I considered a camper, but, eh, that seems like a lot of money, work, and effort for a weekend or 2 a year. Yours might work as a compromise.2 -
I was volunteer photographer for 4 races this summer. Got some great shots!
Cool. How did you get that gig? I am looking for more day time photo practice and something like that would be good I think.0 -

I signed up to volunteer at the race and where they asked for any special qualifications, I told them I do sport photography and gave them a link to my soccer photos. I also told them I have a pick up so I did haul equipment during some of the race. This was my second year doing it.
If that's something you want to do, find a local race and look at their website and facebook page to see what they've had in the past. Some races are flush with photographers, some have nothing. Most would be thrilled to have someone shooting if they don't currently, but that's not always the case.
There's a race next month on my "home" trails. Marathon, 50K, 50M, 100k and 100M. I can't run it but I wanted to volunteer with my camera. I thought it would be a shoo-in since past years showed single photographer taking them and quite honestly, not very good. I was turned down because they said they already had one. Surprised, I looked back at their site and realized that the photographer they had was selling his photos (low-rez was free), and he is the race director's husband. Then it all made sense...

One of the races I shot had a flooded section of trail where the water was about 2.5 feet deep, which I knew about because I had run the 5K course the day before. Most of the time I was set up there shooting. Here are the photos:

Yeah, I will have to find some small local one and just crash it shooting and build a portfolio I guess first. Who do you use to host/sell the photos?1 -
PastorVincent wrote: »Yeah, I will have to find some small local one and just crash it shooting and build a portfolio I guess first. Who do you use to host/sell the photos?
I use Flickr.com to host the photos because it's cheap and unlimited space. I don't sell them, I make them available to the racers and the race director for free.
I posted links to my galleries but MFP is holding on to the post pending approval.
If you go to my Flickr link above you can work your way to my page, then my albums, and see all of my trail photos.0 -

Ah, I have the handful of photos I take seriously on Deviant Art cause I can put the full resolution on there. Not looked at Flikr in a very long time.
