McDonald's

So I've read through various posts that say McDonald's should be a 4 letter word on this site. I know it's not a good choice in general. Taking my son and his friend there anyway. Does anyone know how accurate the nutrition calculator on the site is? The bacon chicken ranch salad without the bacon or cheese looks like a pretty awesome option, other than being a little high on the sodium for someone with high blood pressure. The 200 calories (with dressing) and 30g of protein sound pretty awesome though.
That's assuming I can ignore my desire for fries...

I’m not sure what posts you’re referring to that suggest McDonalds, or any other fast food, should be a four letter word. What does that mean that a person should never eat these foods? Why not? If you can fit it in your calories there is nothing inherently wrong with McDs.
Calorie counts at fast food and other chain places are usually fairly reliable because everything comes frozen and premeasures for size.
I eat at McDonalds sometimes with the kids on a busy Saturday - a McDouble and Diet Coke and then we all share an order of fries, that’s usually under 600 calories.26 -
Luckily, most fast food places don't have something that I just have to eat. Arby's - going to want that beef and cheddar. McDonald's - why yes I will super size my fries. Twice.
I'm at a significant calorie and carb deficit for today so I may allow myself that small fry. Of course, it makes me think of all the Give me the supersized double quarter pounder extra cheese meal with a diet coke jokes.0 -
There's nothing wrong with having McDonald's every once and awhile, and their nutrition calculator is as good as anyone else's.
I typically get an egg mcmuffin and a coffee. And their sandwiches aren't too bad calorie wise either, I'm usually ok as long as I don't get fries. I was aiming for 1500 cals when I was losing weight, and as long as I went lighter on my other two meals I could usually fit a fast food meal in once or twice a week.8 -
i dont eat mcdonalds because i think most of it tastes like garbage. i dont have anything against fast food, just their crap they pass off as food LOL I will tolerate their breakfast sandwiches.
but yes, you can eat it and fit it in your calorie goals and be just fine.8 -
I think you are misreading this site on that. What we generally preach here is that anything is okay in your diet in moderation within your goals. If McDonald's can be that for you, then it's welcome to be part of your diet.
I've lost 40 pounds having McDonald's somewhat frequently. I do have a higher calorie goal than many others, so I can get fries and big burgers. But as you mentioned, there are more calorie friendly items for those with lower goals.8 -
I’ve heard one of the best options at McD’s is a regular burger or even cheeseburger, without fries. Those salads can be calorie bombs. Don’t know if The posted cals are correct; they are probably off by some percentage, I doubt they are exact.1

I order eggs and bacon all the time from there, I think Mcdonalds is best fast food place to keep your weight down. I know I have to watch bojangles, calories high there.0

Go and enjoy yourself! Yes, there are some posters on MFP who are very adamant about 'clean eating' and/or 'bad foods' and would never recommend eating at McDonald's. But I have learned which wise posters' advice I read and follow on here, including the above, who practice moderation. Follow their advice and enjoy that sandwich.4

I don't know where you read that. This forum is much more accepting of fast food than any other I've seen. As for the calories and nutrition, I would double check on McDonald's official website, it should be more or less accurate there. Some entries can be wrong here because they're user-generated and not verified. 200 calories is not much, so you even have wiggle room for fries if you weren't watching your carbs (which apparently you are). If it really is only 200 calories (I somehow doubt it), you could double the order plus a diet drink so you aren't hungry. You're less likely to give in and order supersized fries when you're full.5

I hateHateHATE McDonald's. I'm a whole-foods vegetarian.
I eat it when I travel with a McD-loving friend. I believe McDonald's online nutrition "calculator" is plenty close enough. Realize that you can order by mix-matching stuff not explicitly on the menu, if you want. (Often, I get some double-egg, no meat muffins, + salad!)
Make sensible choices, based on the calculator: You'll be fine.
And don't assume "MFP" (whoever the heck that is) has some quasi-religious objection to Mickey D's.
It's just food.11 -
Count me as another person who is wondering where you are seeing posts that say "McDonald's should be a 4 letter word." That is certainly not the majority opinion here in Food & Nutrition or in General.
I haven't had a salad from McDonald's in years, but because I work from home and just make my own salads. When I worked in an office I used to get them fairly often.
I did have a salad from Wendy's while on the road one weekend recently which was probably more or less equivalent. It came with two dressings, but I just needed one. I don't like large meals, and had half for lunch and half for an afternoon snack.
I would trust nutrition info from a place like McDonald's, where portions are tightly regulated, more than a place like Chipotle, where that seems to be less of an issue. (Yumminess wise, I prefer Chipotle.)5 -
Their calorie counts are fairly accurate. I’ve eaten McDonald’s all through my weight loss and almost 6 years of maintaining and had consistent results. I’d recommend their Southwest salad with grilled chicken and one southwest dressing packet. Or since they sell breakfast all day now I often get the Egg White Delight, hash brown and a sugar-free vanilla iced coffee. Both choices with reasonable calories and very satisfying in my opinion3

It's possible when OP says "posts" they mean MFP blog posts. All the typical FB level dietary cliches etc.10

I agree with everyone else on this one, if you can fit the calories, GO for it! Personally, I don't eat Micky D's because it makes me sick. Well, I can eat a breakfast sandwich, but since I make my own all the time I just don't bother. But get me into a Wendy's and it's all over! Again, within my calorie allotment, that is. And if you want to check the accuracy of the data base, go to McDonald's site and check it there. That's usually what I do when something sounds too good on MFP. Second opinions are always a good thing!0

Their artisan chicken sandwich is pretty good. I always get a small fry with it.2
-
I haven’t been in a long time, but their Southwest grilled chicken salad used to be delicious and like 350 calories, if I remember correctly.4
-
I've always loved their fries but any of the burgers or other sandwiches always gave me serious belly aches.0

I cut all fast food out because that is where my problem was, EATING TOO MUCH of that always got me sick and miserable and also HUNGRY soon after eating it. Yes, at the end of the day, it is all about staying within your calorie deficit, but I prefer to eat sensible healthier choices now and haven't had any problems with acid reflux or other ailments from eating garbage. IF I ever eat fast food again, the chicken sandwich will come from Chick-Fil- A...they do at least have a quality REAL chicken sandwich.4

I searched McDonald’s in the forum and saw a few that said it should be ******* out. I think they were mostly older posts. I did the artisan grilled chicken sandwich and side salad with balsamic. No fry burgling.7

I hate McDonald’s too! I started to say “go to Wendy’s.” But then I remembered the playgrounds in McDonald’s, and kids saying “I want McDonald’s” and not “I want Wendy’s”. Enjoy McDonald’s with the kids before they get old enough they don’t want you to go anywhere with them!

I like McDonalds. Great chocolate shake, Egg Muffin 300 calories. Good fries but there are sort of off my list due to density.0

I go to any fast food place when i can work in the calories-1
-
i'm a sucker for their fish sammiches. i realize they aren't good...they are like those oval shaped chicken sammiches at burger king to me..horrible and delicious.2
-
Anything you can fit into your calorie budget is ok. Personally, my breakfast sandwiches are better than theirs. I really just prefer my own cooking vs eating out. Better & cheaper. BTW, food is a four letter word 😉0

I attempted to have a grilled chicken burger no sauce, bacon or cheese and was still violently ill 30 mins after. Shane because I loved the taste haha0
