Struggles: Weird thing happened today. I got up at 5am, peed and weighed, scale read 146.2. I like 'huh, I barely averaged 1600 calories a day this week.'. Went back to sleep, got up at 8:32, peed and weighed, scale read 145.1. How in the heck could I lose almost a pound in 3.5hrs of sleep? Scales are strange. No wonder people trying to lose weight lose their minds about scale fluctuations. Oh well, life was pretty normal and boring this week.

    Thinking a few little things:
    • Urine has dissolved salts, so is heavier than water. Water is a pound a pint. That can explain part.
    • When you sleep, you exhale. That also has water vapor. Maybe not a huge mass, but that's where oxidized fat leaves your body. Counts for a little.
    • Three and a half hours is about 15% of a 24-hour day. I don't know what your BMR is, but if it's 1400 calories per day, you burn 200 calories by sleeping for 3.5 hours. That should count for some, too.

Trust your instruments, but if you think they need a test or calibration, do it!

Hi! My name is Kristen. And I struggle to maintain my weight. I have had great success losing/gaining, but I'm hoping this group helps me be more accountable. I weigh only 1x week on Sundays, so that's when I'll check in. My 2 goals in 2020 are to not let the scale go above 153 and weigh in EVERY Sunday for the WHOLE YEAR. This seems easy to most, but I get lazy and make excuses why I don't need to weigh in and then all of a sudden everything in my closet has shrunk. LOl

HEAVIEST weight: 175.4 in early 2013.
    Total Weight lost: 30 pounds
Time it took to lose: ~6 months
How long in maintenance: Since July 2018 -- but with some fluctuation outside of goal range.
Maintenance weight range: 142 - 148 (and not sure that's the right answer)

Average weight recorded from 2017 (12 months): 163.8
Average weight recorded from 2018 (12 months): 150.7
Average weight recorded from 2019 (12 months): 144.8

Average weight recorded from December 2019: 145.0

    Average weight Week of...
    December 23 - 29: 145.1
    December 30 - January 5: 145.3
    January 6 - 12: 144.1
    January 13 - 19: 142.6
    January 20 - 26:
    January 27 - February 2:

Success of the week: Wait... WHAT? Holy ocelot! My average weight is below my goal again for the first time since mid October. If I am supposed to fluctuate around my goal, I should be above it AND below it more frequently. But my actual goal is near the bottom of my range, so there ya go.

Struggle of the week: One reason for the big drop was a short bout with a norovirus; I lost nearly four pounds in one day. Only one came back the next day when I returned to eating pretty normal amount of food, so maybe I can stick to it.

The TrendWeight and Weight Grapher websites both say I still need a couple more days below goal scale weight to bring my trend down to or below my goal, but the simple seven-day average says I got here as does another weighted moving average spreadsheet I use on a group here called Lose 1 Pound a Week and Keep it Off.

    Jan19 - 52.1 kg (114.9 lbs)
    Jan 26 -

Success(es)/struggle(s) of the week: 100 grams increase this week which is fine considering I had a big drop the week before. Have gone out to eat quite a few times last week as it was mine and my partner's birthday week (our birthday's 3 days apart). Back to our normal eating routine this week and hoping for another drop. All is fine with my nutrition but have just got a bit of a set back with my training. I went to see a chiropractor last week for a niggling pain in my back (desk job), they did some xrays and turns out that my lower spine has a slight curve and twist. So taking it a bit easy at the gym, I have set up an appointment with a personal trainer to go back to basics and learn proper form and stretching and considering going to to a physio for a second opinion.

    January 12th: 160.7 (trend 162.2)
    January 19th: 159.5 (trend 162.3)

Successes: No gnus is good gnus. A steady, consistent week. I've probably leaned a little too hard into banking calories for indulgences (which can be seen in daily weight vs. trend), but I've enjoyed the splurges.

Struggles: I lost my Fitbit, which was giving me reasonably accurate calories for steps/exercise and replaced it with a Garmin, which decidedly underestimates them. While it's not so hard to mentally readjust the number of calories that I ought to have based on prior results, it'd be easier to have it done for me. Plus, I hate seeing red numbers. There's likely a fix, but I haven't yet found it.

@MadisonMolly2017 I actually find sodium harder to regulate than calories! My BP (and weight) seem a bit sensitive to it, so I try to stay around/under 2g. Most of what I eat is home-cooked/prepared, but it's still a challenge. You ought to be proud of keeping it under 1500 mg!

Looks like you're doing GREAT. You dropped back down from your one excursion into the sixties, and you're really stable over time. Nice job! Just don't count on food to get you out of a funk. Eat it and enjoy it for sure (I sure did last night), and give yourself some credit for a job well done.

I do hope you shake the funk. This time of year is TOUGH.

Successes: Went a couple hundred calories over maintenance Tuesday + plus chose to eat a work provided meal for lunch on Thursday and still ended up losing. But at least the losing is slow.

Struggles: I'd like to stop freaking out that the scale will go up so much that it goes down instead. My goal for this week is to hit at least 1750 everyday this week. My average this past week was 1635.

    Hope everyone is doing awesome!

Success of the week: After putting on four pounds by mid-week (recovering from the gut bug and losing four pounds in a day), I've moderated back to my goal. Today is bagel day!

Struggle of the week: I was really tempted to eat certain foods this week, but except for Friday night, I was able to moderate my intake.

The TrendWeight website says I have exactly the same trending weight as my simple weekly average. The algorithm that Weight Grapher uses says I'm about a quarter pound heavier. The True Weight spreadsheet I keep that's part of the Lose 1 Pound a Week and Keep it Off discussion group here has me spot on my goal weight! I guess that all goes in the success column, too.

Speaking of TrendWeight, I went back and looked at my data going back to when I started my journey in 2017. It tells an interesting story. There's about a year of just dinking around and not making a whole lot of progress. Then a good six months of steady loss down near my goal and entering maintenance in July 2018. After that, there's a clear maybe eight months of struggling with those last few pounds to get my scale weight to my ultimate goal. Still some fluctuations, and then a relatively good year in 2019. The fluctuations continued, but as I get better dialed in to maintenance, they ~SEEM~ to be getting smaller. So this is all good.

Try changing the activity class on your garmin account. I don’t know whether setting it up or down would give you the desired effect. But it says it goes into calorie burn.

Interesting! I'm going to adjust the class and see what happens. Thanks!
