@aliciap0116 when I worked for the government we all had to sign telework agreements which our supervisors could extend at anytime. I pray they do the same for your family members.
I allowed myself a Venti Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte with Soy Milk today while I took a bike ride around our little island. The island is packed with Spring Break families and college students. I have to admit that I’m receiving a lot of joy from greeting them with a big smile and watching their faces light up😊. I packed little goodies in my cooler on my bike as I ride and it’s just been nice.

I'm actually surprised I lost this week. I had a lot of muscle soreness from getting into weights and bouts of cardio and had a gain midweek. It appears to have settled down, which I'm more happy about than losing the pound. I didn't want to medicate muscle pain since I figured it was my body communicating with me but it didn't make for a fun work week.6 -

@leanneellison1979 to could be a lot of things, including sodium, time of month, alcohol. Don’t be afraid of it. If you are doing the right things the loss will come. Maybe not when we want or expect it but just be consistent. I would weigh, use it as a data point, and move on so you can see what about your routine works or doesn’t work. But treat it like a science experiment if you are unhappy with the number. We are all on a long road with some bumps. You can do it!0

@AlexandraFindsHerself We are a one car family too and we too have 3 people too. My daughter is 25. Glad you BF is working from home too now. Yes I only have sips of my daughters shakes. I can’t afford them either. Good job being patient until you saw a loss.

@aliciap0116 funny that you noticed that yesterday was the quietest day here. I started a word file of replies then we had to go out shopping to prepare for radical social distancing and was so exhausted after that I didn’t complete them till now.

@bluffgirl67 I was wondering where you were. Sorry about the bad news with your mother. No wonder you are in nesting mode. Take care. My mother lives in a retirement community and they have shut down the dining room and all activities. They deliver food to their apartments. So I have started to call her more. She and friends started an unofficial bridge game once a week.

As to cancelled trips...My work cancelled my conference trip next month and I am okay with that even though I would be able to see my son. I really don’t want to expose him to Seattle germs anyway.

A lot has happened since I posted last Wednesday. I went onto my work email that night just to check and there was a new Covid-19 directive from the leadership. It said they ask all those over 60 to work at home. It is one thing for your Governor to recommend this but it is another for your employer to give the directive. There was another case in the part of the County where I work. So I felt I had a basis for asking my boss to work at home. I didn't know it but my husband was listening to my son and it turned out that on Thursday we both arranged with our employers to work at home. We had already decided to take Friday off so Thursday night we made a shopping list and on Friday we went out and got supplies so we could stay at home as much as possible. I think of it as radical social distancing. It is entirely reasonable given where I live.
It isn't just for myself but for others. We need to flatten what would otherwise be an exponentially increasing curve in our area and eventually in all areas or we won't be able to deal with the projected impact. The store employees were so professional and there were a lot of shoppers since schools were just closed in our 3 counties. Everyone was very courteous with one another.
My weight variations are lower and smaller so I hope to see another loss soon. With my allergies I didn't go to Aquafit this morning but with all the extra shopping yesterday I got a lot of walking in for me. Also we have alot of cooking at home planned for the next 2 weeks or more so that is helpful to me. I won't have to commute so this is the time to slip in more exercise.
I was very interested in the posts about organizing and scheduling for days at home. I hope to work on this. My youngest is at home doing school online but she is 25 so I do not have the issues younger mothers working at home with children have. My best to you.4 -
@shorepine - I'm so sorry about the run cancellation. I had an 8K scheduled for April 5th that was cancelled too. It's disappointing but I think wise. Are you still planning to travel? We just cancelled our spring break trip to Memphis. I wanted to go, but everything would have been closed anyway - no museums, concerts. I suppose if I had a beach vacation planned I might still travel, although the experts are advising against plane travel.
@Terytha - I'm so sorry about the uncertainty with your job. As if things weren't stressful enough!
@KeriA - I'm glad you and your husband have the opportunity to work from home. You are so right about flattening the curve. I have an old friend who now lives in Hong Kong and have learned a lot from him about what Hong Kong has done to slow the spread. They are a really successful example - doing everything they needed to do early. At this point, we can't stop the disease, but if we can slow it, at least the hospitals won't all be overwhelmed at once. So much of our world as we know it is about to change. It is so frightening.
@sharpdust - I so get what you are saying. The pandemic is really taking a toll on me mentally and I have felt the urge to stress eat like never before. I am trying to stem it off with high protein snacks instead. Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt is my best friend right now.
@bluffgirl67 - I'm so sorry for the sad news. And I understand wanting to crawl in your shell. I think we are all feeling that in some way or another right now.
Things got real for me when my daughter's school in Boston shut down for the rest of the year. She was supposed to fly back to Boston yesterday but we changed her ticket last week when they decided to extend her spring break. Now they want her to come back between the 18th and the 20th and move everything out of the dorm. The rest of the semester will be on line only. It's so disappointing for her. She was really enjoying college life. It's not going to be the same. The worst part is that she has an 8:00 class - that means she has to log in at 5:00 a.m. pacific time!
I decided to go shopping at 10:00 last night, figuring that the stores would be less crowded. I was so wrong. Everyone had the same idea; it was even worse than the weekend before Thanksgiving! Only the shelves were empty. No meat - of any kind. Except Beyond Burgers. No Bread. No Potatoes, No onions. Plus, abandoned carts every where - like people just up and disappeared. It was surreal; I still can't process it. Like it was a dream or a scene from an apocalypse movie. I went back today to see if they had restocked and pick up what was still on my list and it was much better. I stocked up on lots of stuff to make comfort food for us. I have Spaghetti and Meatballs, chili, roasted chicken, and pork noodle soup planned for us. My husband (a teacher) will be working from home for the next 3 weeks so he can help. My plan is to have a freezer full of prepared food just in case we have to hole up and self-quarantine later. I work in such a small office - just 8 people that I think I will go into work so my husband and daughter can do their on line classes in relative peace. I have a private office and I suspect most of my work mates will work from home anyway.
For those avoiding the gym and public places I want to recommend getting outside. It's much safer walking in the fresh air than being inside - even in your own home. Going for a run, a bike ride or a walk is a good way to practice social distancing, relieve stress and still get your exercise in. Stay healthy everyone. We will survive this and we will support each other through this very harrowing time. Love and hugs to all of you.6 -

Overeating yesterday and today, I think the uncertainty of everything is a big part. Those earlier ideas to set a routine are going to be necessary. Whenever I'm home for any extended time, eating mindlessly is too prominent.4

Yesterday we went to the bank to see what our options are. We have a few. Very limited, but more than I thought/was afraid of.
Yesterday was also pie day so I had a giant piece of chocolate peanut butter pie and we drank espresso flavored Bailey's while playing video games.
I went hugely over calories.

To all...it seems like such a trying time in all of our lives right now between personal things going on at home and this near pandemic disease process plaguing the US and the entire world, really...March has been a difficult month.
In light of my position in healthcare at this time I only feel it fair to myself to forsake my March goals and focus on keeping myself, my family, and my patients at work as safe as possible...I am still tracking and still trying, just not with the same prioritiy given to these things as I have before. COVID has my medical company scared. In my area no cases have been diagnosed as of yet but I live in the heart of coal country. Respiratory disease rates are higher here than anywhere else in my state. I worry for our eldery and for our coal miners as well as their families. My home has always been SW Va and my heart is breaking for our people here, to see the fear in their eyes...this weekend I have seen families with infants crying because people have literally bought out the supplies of baby formula in my area. I HAVE SEEN that friends have had to drive 2 hours or more to find their babies sole source of nutrition. The TP thing, hey we can find another way; baby wipes cleaned out from shelves, we can make due; but seeing these families so scared because they cannot get formula for their babies....it breaks my spirit down. Store employees tell us people are buying it up as quickly as they stock the shelves because "formula lasts longer than milk." Crazy to think an adult can rationalize buying infant formula for their own sustainance and take it from a helpless infant.
I hope to all that you and your families remain untouched by this virus and that the panic soon settles...otherwise, I am not sure what state this COVID scare is going to leave my area, and our country in...I have a 62 year old nurse working with me and she keeps advising us all...wash your hands and pray...wash your hands and meditate...wash your hands and send good thoughts to the world that this should all leave as quickly as it has descended on the people.
I feel like that got heavy enough...on the lighter side: I kept my calories under control, I kept drinking my water (not logging though), and the scale dropped by 2 lbs. Progress...good luck to all!11 -

@bluffgirl67 I am so, so sorry about the not-the-best news with regards to your Momma's liver biopsy. That is so hard. I've been there, and my heart aches for you. I hope that you two have many more good times together ahead- its such a roller coaster but you never know how many good days there will be. Take each one as it comes.
@speyerj amazing job on the loss! WOW- 90 lbs! Congratulations and thanks for the inspiration! I am bummed about the run, but it's OK. It makes total sense. I'm sorry about your trip being cancelled and the 8k being cancelled.
We are still planning to go on our spring break trip. It is a beach vacation to Hawaii and we are staying with family- so there are no concerns about hotels, restaurants, etc. Also the beach probably won't be closed. We left the decision up to the family we are going to visit, because if they were concerned about us being exposed en route we would stay home. They are not concerned at all and actually really want us to still come, so we are (as of today) still going to make the trip.
I am overeating too, like so many of you. I don't count myself among the extremely anxious or concerned about the virus thing, but the uncertainty is getting to me too. Mostly about what this looks like for my community, for our schools, economy. I'm lucky to have a job that is not at high risk and where telecommuting is a possibility, and so I count my blessings there.
Goals for today are to get fresh air, get exercise, and make healthy food choices. NO STRESS EATING!5 -

@speyerj I feel for your daughter. That is hard having to get up at 5 for an 8 AM class, having to move out of the dorm in the middle of the semester. My daughter was already living at home so it is an easier transition. We went shopping during midday on Friday and there were a lot of people doing the same. So much for social distancing although we all tried. There was a lot of food but some shelves were empty. My husband went to Office Depot to get paper towels. He went to a less mainline drug store to get TP (just 1 large pack not hording). Otherwise we got most things we wanted at COSTCO and our neighborhood grocery store. I agree about getting outdoors for exercise. The one time I intentionally ate at maintenance to reset I lost too.
@cory17 I think you have a point. I make sure things I can’t avoid eating are not in my home but it seems like a reversal of this to stock up on foods. However as @speyerj suggests most of us can still get out of doors for a walk or run etc to get out of the house.
@Terytha Glad you checked into options and had good news. it is the weekly deficit that matters not the daily one. Stay warm.

@lbostic89 there were people buying up all the supplies to price gouge on Amazon. So despicable. How can people try to profit from those who are in areas hit by this virus and taking supplies from healthcare workers. We are just getting enough to get by if one of us comes down with this and we are quarantined or to practice what I think of as radical social distancing which will help the healthcare system here (Puget Sound region in WA state) cope better if we can manage to flatten the curve. Fortunately we seemed to have baby supplies here.

I am proud of our little family for planning meals for 2 weeks. Now we are going to have almost 2 hours free since we will not be commuting. It will probably mostly go to meal prep, exercise and cleaning the house. Yesterday I made a big pot of vegetable soup. I may make my chili today to be more prepared for the work week and have good lunch options now that we are home. It will also make it easier for me to log and check in here during the week. I need to re-evaluate my exercise goals.

@lbostic89 thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you and your co-workers are doing. We have a tenant in our basement apartment who is a medical resident at the hospital. Two of her co-workers are being tested. I can't imagine how stressful this is for anyone in healthcare but I am in awe of you all. You are our heroes.

@speyerj I'm sad for your daughter. Our daughter will be coming from her mom's to us, most likely Friday. She thinks the dorms will be open April 10 and is looking forward to a retreat at the end of May. I don't think they will reopen though. It will be nice to have her home with us.
@shorepine enjoy your vacation. Hawaii will be beautiful. Bring wipes to clean down the plane (tray tables, backs and fronts of the seats, and seat belt). And hand sanitizer. Flying isn't fun right now but I think flights are less crowded at least.
@terytha sorry you are going through a tough time. Financial stresses are hard.
I have had a stomach virus for the past two days and no appetite. In the good news column, I haven't been stress eating and have lost 6.3 lbs since Wednesday. I know I am just dehydrated and it will bounce back up. It was nice to see that number (190.3) on the scale and have an almost flat belly even if it isn't real, but I look forward to feeling healthier and strong soon.

Man oh man. As if I needed anymore stress in my life right now. I have the world's worst neighbors right now. They go out every Friday and Saturday night until 1-3am. I work on Sundays. They leave their young dog at home and it howls on and off the entire time they're gone. I've texted them after midnight and let them know that their pup is howling and it seems to have separation anxiety. Tried to be as friendly as possible letting them know.
Basically I have been told to mind my own business, that they have a right to live their lives and they won't let me dictate what they can do or how they live. That I should rent a house if I want quiet. Their lease is up in two months and I feel like that is an eternity away. Technically part of the lease agreement states that your neighbor has a right to enjoy a quiet home, but my landlord doesn't seem to want to really enforce it. My luck I will be quarantined next to them (we're in a duplex and share a wall). They obviously aren't practicing social distancing and things are getting serious in my state. We just received an alert that anyone who has visited one of four specific counties in our state needs to self isolate for 14 days, regardless of whether they have symptoms or not.
So. I've barely eaten today with everything going on. This too shall pass I know, but man. 2020 is really starting out horribly.

And thanks to everyone commenting on the jury duty situation. I refused to explain to the judge and kept telling her it was private because I wasn’t going to discuss it in front of 54 other potential jurors. I would have been happy to explain in her chambers with all attorneys present.
Now…I’ve got a very, very different opinion of the corona virus and to avoid anything contentious I won’t get into too much of it here. Do not mistake me, though, I believe the corona virus is a serious illness. As serious as the flu, really, except without the same level of complacency people have about the flu. Most of the actions undertaken by governments and organizations make perfect sense. But a lot of it is overreaction in my mind. We effectively have an influenza pandemic every single year, but the financial markets don’t collapse on an annual basis and everything all the doomsday preppers bought should have already been in their house (perhaps in a lesser quantity) because everyone should have already been performing prevention care to avoid contracting and spreading the flu.
DO NOT get me started on the toilet paper. Just don’t.
@lbostic89 – I don’t know if it’s widely available where you live or if it’s prohibitively expensive, but if you have any influence can you suggest people buy almond milk instead? It’s shelf stable and actually has calcium if that’s an issue. And it does come in sweetened and unsweetened varieties.
@speyerj – same story when I went to the store on Thursday night. The produce section was wiped out. Maybe people really will need all that toilet paper when they eat their way through the perishable produce they bought! Only the impossible meat was left on the shelves. I went out as soon as I could this morning and the stores were better-stocked but there were still things I couldn’t get. Like flour. I know how to and love to make bread. Also congratulations on reaching 90 pounds lost! And all while having some fun this month, too. Sorry to hear about your daughter needing to leave school. My health system is affiliated with a university that made the same decision on Monday. My heart went out to the students, especially the seniors. This is not a time of life that will come around for them again.
We’ve been on the forefront with shutting down the world here in PA. Statewide, the schools are closed for the next two weeks. And the bad news: our liquor stores are state stores and starting tomorrow most, if not all will be closed. I saw the parking lot for the liquor store and it was packed this morning. With everything closed here, it will not surprise me if it doesn’t get to be like The Shining somewhere in PA real quick.
My gym is also closed now. The gym is actually probably one of the safest things I’ll do in the coming week. I’m lucky I’m not out of work, but while it seems everyone else in the world got to work from home as much as possible we were mandated to report and work in shifts and our allowed work from home time was reduced from two days a week to one. And I get the sense the one day a week was not preferred by leadership.
I know it should be the least of my worries, but all this means I’m SOL with the guy at the gym, at least for now. I may have been SOL anyway because ultimately I think I was mistaken about the level of interest. But I still hadn’t given up hope quite yet. The one great piece of news, in a “great minds think alike” sort of way is this: on Friday morning when there were about 20 people in the gym, he was one of them. Yes it makes me feel selfish thinking this way at this time, but I don't need another entry into the "reasons you are unlovable" encyclopedia that is my life, either.
@shorepine – bummed for you about the race cancellation. So glad you are running your own race!
I ran yesterday, goal was 6.0 miles but I actually ran 6.5 miles. I usually run a bit longer than my goal but not by half a mile – that’s usually my “level up.” Who knows if this race will still be on as it is the first weekend in May, but no news is good news so far…

My goals for March are:- Cardio for 45-60 min, 5-6 times a week, 2-3 of the sessions Couch-to-10K workouts, with a long run on the weekend. Cross training on the off-days – followed the plan this week, but without the gym cross training is now off the table and I’m worried about overuse injuries now.
- Increase walking distance to 10 miles for one workout a week – I did it today! I also started running one-third of the distance. It’s exhausting having a long run and a long walk on the weekends, and the sooner I can combine the two the better!
- Core exercises at least 3 times a week. Also need to add other weight training for legs, upper body. – I did add all exercises core, legs and upper body. Thank goodness I’ve got a home routine for now, I’m able to continue without the gym equipment.
- Continue to drink water – Check!
- Take better care of my skin in hopes it will start to regain its shape. Hoping faithfulness here will be rewarded in the long run. – fallen way out of routine with this.
I briefly saw 178 pounds yesterday, only to be up two pounds today. Sigh. Well, I’m trying to remember it’s only a number. Like @AlexandraFindsHerself, I think I might be recomping. My fat looked pretty jiggly this morning. Everyone in my house has a cold right now, which means baby's still not sleeping, which sucks.
I left my food scale at work on Friday, so this weekend I know I took in more than I logged, but nothing too crazy. I shouldn't see any real gains, even if I didn't lose. I'm bringing my scale home with me today, and hopefully my new scale comes in tonight (and some bluetooth headphones of my own, so I can stop borrowing Whatsisface's for my runs!). I got whole boxes of my favorite protein bars this weekend, so I've got like... 60 protein bars at home, lol.
Favorites, you ask? Quest blueberry muffin, Quest white chocolate raspberry, ONE maple glazed donut, ONE almond bliss, and ONE birthday cake. I wanted to get peanut butter chocolate cake, too, but they were out.
Today I'm going to shoot for lifting weights after work. May or may not happen, but I'm going to try. And I think I'm going to relax our normal no-TV-on-school-nights rule for everyone so that Whatsisface and I can do some blanket fort-ing in the form of binging The Office.

My anxiety level is through the roof right now. Had to take an Excedrin pm finally at 11:30 last night to get to sleep. Slept about six hours. I need to sleep well to be able to stay as healthy as possible. I have a feeling my work may shut down soon. I think restaurants and bars will shut down here soon to follow suit with other states, which I am in favor of right now. The news out of Italy is scary today.
Guess I'll get to work early today since I'm up already. I feel like work is keeping me sane right now.10 -
We've declared a state of emergency in our city after the number of infectees doubled yesterday.
Every city institution like schools and libraries are closed. Every other business is required to allow only 50% of their capacity or less than 250.
I have a work meeting at 8:30 this morning. It's all pretty scary.11 -
Hugs to everyone, times are hard right now. In light of everything, I’ve decided to cancel my kickboxing membership for the time being. I’ll be honest, I am sad about it, but my health and the others I could put at risk are far more important. Plus, I have the capability to workout at home. Hopefully once the world is okay again, I can rejoin, but for now, I have to put it in the backseat.
I did have a little breakdown last night worried that’d I’d somehow gain all the weight back if I stopped, but I know it’s up to me and the choices I make. Stay safe everyone!10 -

I lost a bit of weight today, down to a number i haven't seen in 5 or 10 years, i think partly because i didn't eat much yesterday, but the trend is going in the right direction.

Hey everyone. I am so sorry to those feeling anxious and affected by changes in their communities. I think I've finally reached a point where my anxiety is lessened a bit. What I have noticed is that different people seem to have different levels of hysteria about the whole thing. Some people are not leaving their house until 2021 and hoarding toliet paper. Some people are totally unconcerned and going out drinking in bars (while they still can) and capitalizing on low airfares to plan exotic vacations. I think I personally fall somewhere in the middle but it seems like my mental state vacillates a bit depending on the day. One thing is for sure- stress doesn't do much for health.
I've found that reading copious amounts of news and social media seems to exacerbate anxiety for me. I have decided to remove Facebook from my phone and limit my news reading to once a day, in the morning, and to the sites that I trust for reliable and fact-based reporting. I'm also going to start doing yoga once a day, again.
I also have been trying to look on the bright side. I am actually really excited to get more time with my kids! And spend more time outside!
Telecommuting and watching my children at the same time is honestly not that fun, though. I am trying to keep them on a schedule and such but it's hard while working and I find myself getting frustrated with them. I wish that we all could just have a month off, paid. But I do feel very lucky to have a job that can be done remotely and that is in a sector unlikely to be immediately harmed by the economic downturn. I am really concerned about those people whose jobs are more vulnerable. A good friend of mine is a content editor for an online retailer, and she got notice on Friday to stop working immediately while they reassessed. She is a contracted employee so especially vulnerable.
Today my goal is to not stress eat. I have a tendency to eat more than usual when I work from home. I think it's because when I go to work, I pack all my food and there is a finite amount available. When I work from home, I have ready access to the kitchen.
Another goal for today is to get a run in. It will probably be on my treadmill unless I can talk my kids into running with me. I'll work on the latter since it is a nice sunny day.7 -
I'm glad at this point that I have my dad's tendency to get "One for the shelf and one for the pantry" in a regular way, because for two weeks we're good on most everything. Which is good because my period's here and I'm going to be rolled up in a ball of cramping for the next four days. Sooo... social distancing happens anyway about now.
(This also explains why I was SO HUNGRY last night. TTOM usually does it for me. And now of course I hurt too much to want to eat.)6
