This. It's not the virus that worries me it's people's behavior.
100%
I get it's scary, but if you are to become infected and really sick 2-3 weeks worth of rations is all you should need.
The hoarding needs to stop.
And people need to self isolate as best they can - it's in everyones best interest.
Side note: I hate that I don't get sick days at my work, and I need my paycheque - as do most people. My coworkers always come to work when they are sick. This is a big problem too.
Yeah, I definitely don’t have 2-3 weeks worth of toilet paper for my family
you may not, but i bet with a quick trip over to your closest neighbors house in the cover of darkness with a bump key and you *could* have 2-3 weeks worth
*googling bump key*
Oh yeah! My middle boy got a lock picking kit a couple years ago. 😁
you actually need a few of 'em. one for each of the various types of locks out there. but you can just make 'em yourself with an old key or a blank and a couple of good files

Maybe. I think a lot of those selfish and greedy hoarders are typically jerks anyway, not necessarily typically "good" humans normally. Most people I see are behaving nicely, only taking what they need, acting friendly. Maybe I just live in a friendlier area? It's a fairly diverse, blue collar to middle class California town. Maybe we just see what we want to see? Sad it's getting so crazy some places. Hope cooler heads prevail.2 -

Only use what’s on base. I knew it was bad when I heard even the Base was staying indoors!
So far, we're still allowed to come and go from base, but most of the stores here are devoid of anything that people are looking for (hygiene products, meat, rice, noodles, shelf-stable foods that aren't vegetables, soda, etc.) And the store on base is very, very small. There is no way it could sustain the population of those of us on base if they put us on lock down.1 -

Same. But I’m wondering about everyone else. If they’re all forced to be at home with their irl spouses, what happens to all the mfp husbands and wives?
Good question. Also, not all of us have an MFP spouse, .
So you’re available?😃
Perhaps.3 -

So adorable! 😍❤️

Can't complain, cuz I'm fine, with a fully stocked fridge/freezer/pantry. I am, however, in the process of interviewing & it's been a ghost town of late. With no job, I can hold on until the end of April, if necessary... but, maybe it's a good time to be indoors & not have to go into crowded office bldgs.
It's affected everyone in some way. I'm trying to be thankful, rather than complain, cuz I'm comfortable, healthy & hanging in there. I'm utilizing the downtime to do lots of exercise.4 -

In Portugal they are "in alert": schools, theatres, cinemas, museums, discos... closed. Restaurants and malls limit the people inside, cruise passengers can't leave the boat. People are encouraged to telework as much as possible, and many people won't go to work to look after the children. People have been advised to be home as much as possible, but it's still not compulsory.
This is how we started; in fact many shops decided to close before the lock-down, both to protect their customers and employees, and because the sales were dropping. Now, only supermarkets and pharmacies are open to the public. The situation is not so difficult in Portugal yet, but it might be. I would postpone the trip, if at all possible.

This is now a full-fledged crisis.
Our local market is sold out of both Brie and Perrier.

Well I was about to start a new job. I’m hoping it didn’t put a hiring freeze right before it was finalized.4

So far, very lucky that our income and childcare is currently not affected. It's also been nice weather and the time of year I get excited to spend more time with my horse and gardening, so not much impact on my typical spring lifestyle.
I really feel for the families and businesses that are being hit hard by this, we are very, very lucky thus far.3 -
All schools shut down for 4 weeks (I work as a yard duty part time). Several of my clients have cancelled or have been told NOT to come to the gym (since many of my clients are seniors). My DW has to telecommute from home. My gym is still open, but one big one just recently got shut down till the end of March in our town. For me, I've just had to treat it like the flu and keep distance and wash hands often and when I get home, I clean up and dump all my clothes in the hamper.

It is crazy to read all of your comments regarding sensible preventative measures. In the UK we just have to keep washing our hands and hoping for the best! The University I work at has allowed undergrads to stay home but staff and postgrads have to keep on trucking. Oh well. Fortunately I can wfh 3 days a week.
On a personal level I feel relatively unaffected. It has been difficult to buy basic things, but that is something we are all dealing with. I still have food, water, a roof over my head etc so can count my blessings. My concerns are with the elderly - I know my Grandma is struggling and I can't go near her as I have been in London. That is hard.4 -

It is really affecting my city, Nashville. We are still devastated from the tornado and so many restaurants and businesses were closed or completely gone from the face of the earth. Then the SEC tournament was cancelled along with all concerts. Now the mayor has closed bars and restaurants are required to limit to 50% of capacity. Schools, parks and other attractions are closed. Grocery stores are pretty empty and are closing at 8 PM every day. I have a good amount in savings but I am worried for the service industry people, wait staff, cosmetologists etc.5
-
We ended up spending way more on groceries than we wanted to because the shelves were almost empty and we can’t run out of the things we need. Bought a bucket and rags for emergency TP just in case. Both my school and my daughter’s school will be closed until March 30. My school will continue online after that. (Anatomy and physiology and drawing 101) My gym has been pretty empty which I like.1

Will anyone be traveling or is everyone just going to stay indoors for 2 weeks +?
We've all been strongly advised and encouraged to not travel during the immediate two weeks, however, we will have no choice after April as there is a bit of travel required for my husband's job and we all need to attend since it concerns all of us and where we go after here.
The mayor of our city put us in a state of emergency. Stores are empty. It's starting to look like a slightly more cheerful version of a George Romero film out here.
Stores are now on limited hours, non-essential personnel at the base where I live have been told to stay at home and engage in social distancing. Most of the shops on base as well as off are on limited hours, most of the fast-food places are in "drive-through only" mode.2 -
saw two police officers in walmart earlier this morning. they're only open from 6am-11pm now i think. i haven't heard of anybody getting rowdy in there over the weekend or nothing (though a guy did pull out a knife and started stabbing some people in a Sams Club elsewhere in the state) so i assume its just them being proactive.
i went and got a couple of little things out of the medicine aisle, though im already pretty well stocked on that end. but like, the ibuprofen and tylenol were all gone too, plus the chapstick. like why ya'll want the chapstick in the event of a quarantine, just buy the economy sized tubs of vaseline instead. some lady was in the self checkout with 3 basket fulls of stuff. and some vile scumbag already bought up all that delicious Diet Dr. Pepper/Cream Soda combo they just came out with.
now they're saying we might end up working from home for the forseeable future now. i already told em im just gonna have to take my entire tower and double monitors home cause no way im doing the job via remote desktop on a laptop. problem is i ain't even got a table for em, so if that happens im gonna go buy a cheapo table at like goodwill and disinfect the soul out of it and use that i guess.
the state parks are staying open for the time being, which makes sense to me, as most of the campsites are spread out and not a lot of common areas to touch. but i figure those will fill up soon too unless there's a quarantine in the future. so camping for fun is kinda out for the time being still too.6 -
I am 100% remote so my work life is unaffected. My son is home from school for at least 3 weeks, which I don’t see as a bad thing. It’s an opportunity to spend time together, help him with some of the schoolwork, and learn creatively. I haven’t really been out to the stores, but hear they are relatively low on supplies. I’m someone who generally has a running supply of “extra” so I’m ok. Staying in and riding this thing out. Feeling fortunate that I am currently unaffected, and also compassionate for those who are affected to a higher degree.3

The governor just closed all gyms at 8pm tonight, so now I need to figure out a new program that is going to work at my home.4
