I know right?? How dare people prepare for an emergency?!?! :gasp:
It's more about how people are "preparing" you don't need 500 rolls of TP, all the hand sanitizer (which does nothing btw) and all the disinfect wipes. Most people are healthy and will be able to get though this relatively easily. But you have the people who are actually at risk who can't get out and get the things they need because of people panicking and clearing the shelves. My dad is going though intensive chemotherapy. On a good day with out this virus we need disinfect wipes, now we cant get any because an over anxious Karen decided that she needs them all.
Not sure why you quoted me because that's not what I said. 🤷🏼♀️ I never said hoard like a doomsday prepper. Huge difference between being prepared for a few weeks of quarantine and doing absolutely nothing. As well as not social distancing, like person I quoted.3 -

Wait. Hand sanitizer does nothing?2 -
Affected me a bit. I’m a registered nurse in Australia working at a large drs surgery. Every day recommendations change, availability for testing is only for high risk people so we don’t really know how fast it’s being transmitted in the community and may be missing people who are transmitting unknowingly, so managing the spread, which is one of the the biggest concerns the health department has advised us, is so difficult. So many people are coming in, particularly younger adults, who are panicking and suffering with worse mental health issues. People aren’t honest with symptoms and travel history/contacts on presentation to reception because they feel like they’ll be treated as a leper. My daughter and I have been unwell with the flu so my mind automatically goes to COVID. It’s not even winter here and we have another peak flu season coming so that’s a bit worrisome. PLUS I’ve had to hide the spare rolls of toilet paper at work in bathrooms because patients have been “loading up”, I’m not paid enough for that lol4

My eldest niece has just been placed in a 14 day quarantine, and by proxy so have my sister and my youngest niece.
Now it feels really real.9 -
March 17th: I'm learning the true value of having a community, even if I don't participate in it often. Today, members of my husband's command pooled together to help an elderly member of our community and her husband acquire supplies they needed to get through. They were both high risk, being older and having just recently had surgery. Our members pulled through and offered to go get the items on their list for them, so they weren't in harm's way.
I'm also realizing (yet again), why I spend so much of my time alone and in complete non-communication. Some of y'all are selfish. Sure, you may be robust and able to ride out this storm with your healthy immune system, but a lot of people aren't in that position. You can be a carrier without being symptomatic. This attitude is precisely why diseases spread as they do in the first place. The flu could be cut down drastically every year if people who could get vaccinated would and if people would properly wash and sanitize their *kitten*. I can't tell you how many people I've seen walk out of bathrooms with unclean hands, before and now during this episode.
In other news, I remain concerned for my elderly family members. My grandmother lives in her home with two relatives who work at a gas station (so I would consider that high risk considering the number of people they come into contact with). My mother (who isn't young, either), has contact with them, which might put my step-father at risk (he's always sick these days). Mildly concerned that my dad's love of bowling is going to get him ill, unless the bowling alley cancelled the events. Will find out more tomorrow.
I appreciate all of you that are required to continue working, specifically healthcare and those that have to work retail (high population jobs). That can't be easy.5 -

Wait. Hand sanitizer does nothing?
Washing hands with soap and water for 30 seconds (or singing two rounds of happy birthday) is what is recommend, hand sanitizer isn’t a real protector so we have been advised.2 -
Every single person I’ve talked in the 25-40 age range state the same run down feeling for the past 2 to 3 weeks I’ve been feeling. How is every one feeling?0

Soap is generally better... and cheaper. Just not as convenient to carry around as hand sanitizer.3 -

My work is holding a company wide meeting in 2hrs. This might mean a mass layoff. It might mean announcing we will be shutting our doors to customers and switching to delivery only. Not thrilled to have to wait to know.4

I should be “working from home” but instead I’m fighting with people on the internet about coronavirus statistics despite my complete lack of knowledge/training/research, what a glorious time to be alive4

Yeah I’ve been suffering with a pretty serious case of the mid to late 30s for a few years now, symptoms are dead on4 -

I'm 100% expendable.
*shrug
I'ma just laying low, keeping under the radar, and hoping that they forget about me; it could happen.4 -
I have Chronic fatigue. One of the symptoms is not sleeping well, and the main reason I don’t sleep well is overwork. Ever since I joined a gym on Halloween, I’ve been exercising a lot (for me), so much I don’t sleep well. Since we now have a confirmed case in my county, I’ve been avoiding the gym. I slept so well last night!! For the first time in months.5

I am low on the totem pole. My particular chunk of the job is literally only me but the people who've worked 20yrs in the company will be kept on over my 3yrs. Whatever will be, will be. I'm trying not to stress but... kinda hard.5 -

I WFH so that has not changed. My gym is closed and I am just stuck. I dont have an at home gym routine. I don't have the weights I need. I guess I'll start running. I just feel so discombobulated.5

There is a happy medium we need to shoot for. You have to respect there is a portion of the population that absolutely needs to be worried about this virus, and we need to keep transmission to a manageable rate so we don't overwhelm our healthcare system. On the other hand, complete isolation as a younger, healthy individual isn't that helpful either. We actually need those people to get infected, get over it, and gain immunity so they stop being potential carriers for the susceptible population and we can get back to normal life. Full blown quarantine is going to be a repetitive process if we don't gain population immunity or find a cure real soon.5

I work in a grocery store and can’t believe how stupid some customers are. We had to restrict the quantity of items to buy so there is enough for everyone. The warehouses are full! The suppliers are fine! We are not running out of things but we still have many logistical problems to fill the shelves because of these idiotic hoarders.12
-
The majority of people getting admitted into hospital here are 30-50 year olds with no previous health issues.
They most likely will survive (as opposed to to older/high risk patients) but it's not guaranteed. And if they survive, they might have permanent diminished lung capacity.
So no, it's not 'just' a flu. (And experts here feel that the flu should be taken more seriously too btw).7 -
I think it's our job as humans is to be a little compassionate towards those who will be affected by this. Compassion goes a long way and it saddens me that some people walk around like they are the exception. Avoidance of reality doesn't help whatsoever but theres people who will go through this in that state of mentality. So I guess what I'm saying is, do your part. The rest will take care of itself.14

Nope, I'm still mad at all the people hoarding things and panicking more than I'm mad at the people who choose to go out in public.
I know that Everytime I go out in public that I am putting myself at risk. And that is the stance that everyone should take. Take precautions for yourself, be accountable for yourself. You are the only person who can take care of you (besides doctors). You don't know who has passed though. We are all going to get this one way or another, there is no way around this.
And before people go all "but youre young and healthy and haer nothing to worry about". You might be right about my own health, but wrong about my dad. He is going though intensive chemotherapy and his immune system is shot. But he's going to go out and see people if he wants. If he only has a limited time here on this Earth, he's making sure he gets the best of it and sees the things he can and visits the people he loves before he can't. But, what would help in this situation is if he could actually get the supplies he needs to do this! But he can't because people panicked and hoarded everything.3 -

Meeting was cancelled XD So we are all whispering about what is going to come next since the managers are in yet another meeting. I know why we haven't just shut down. Us closing would pretty much cripple the supply chain of our industry.1 -
I picked up the phone today (yes, rotary) and squashed an old beef
I now realize that life is too short to be upset with someone over something as trivial as who's the best women's collegiate hockey team5 -

See, little comments sprinkled here and there (like this) in Chit-Chat are what really make me stick around. Cause we all sure as hell know I'm not sticking to any of my weight loss goals.3 -
