How can a governor legally do that ?
There's a good chance that there will be more personal destruction (suicide, crime, spousal abuse) as a result of economic collapse than the virus itself.
It's about health of the population. In certain situations, Gov't has overriding authority. Be thankful you don't live in the Bay Area of California.
Government might have an authority, but to what ends ?
As some point, there is going to be pushback, if not retaliation, by the masses.
The Bay Area of California? Yeah, not my jam.

Let me explain. The supermarket is empty of food supplies. The baked beans were calling me. I calmly explained to her that the beans are being sold as 'buy 4 for £2.50' I simply bought X2 of the product on offer. She hastily explained while shaking, that as of tomorrow we will only be able to buy X2 of each product per person. She couldn't quite understand that the are being sold on offer of X4 for a set price. Looks like supermarkets will have to sort out their 'deals' so people dont feel as if they are 'panic buying' when I haven't been doing that at all. But when all the hoarders have reduced you and your family to beans, I feel I am within my rights to have SOMETHING to eat if I have to self isolate...actually feel like your committing a crime for buying food.
Good job I bought a bottle of rum for the 3 of us. Should have maybe bought 2....
hey i found who’s hoarding all the baked beans you guys

I'm concerned as well about how far the shutdown orders will go. But, by the same token, because of how stupid and ignorant people can be something needs to be done. Not heavy handed such as Bay Area did.
But, if a two week interruption can help reduce the spread of this thing, I think it's something we all should get behind.2 -
I'm a cashier so it kinda sucks right now with people's buying habits. Aside from the work implications... I stress eat. After hitting my calorie goal I still found myself eating an entire chocolate bar this evening and craving something else to munch on. I decided to eat half a container of mints to keep me occupied but low calorie😂
Also I uh might be a bit more prone to anxiety than I realised before now. I get social anxiety from dealing with lots of people or having to do group stuff but now going to a store when I don't have work shifts takes me like 15min just to psych myself up to deal with people. (Work is work on that front I plaster on that customer service smile and fake it anyway when I go in🤷♀️)3 -

My kids and I now have all been coughing for 24 hours. Fever low but hovering around 100. Most pronounced symptom for me is chest heaviness but I honestly don’t know how much of that is just from anxiety. We can’t be tested as there is a shortage of test kits in my state and they are only testing people with known contact with the virus or who have traveled in the past 2 weeks. All that tells me is that the community spread numbers are severely underreported.
No clue if its *the* virus, but just the same.. we are housebound until symptoms resolve.

We are in lockdown. I'm a teacher, and in theory, we had this week off. No way, we have been asked to organise online learning (on a new platform we don't know how to use) so that children don't "miss out" on school work. Everything has to be ready before Monday, so I'm working like crazy, trying to understand the platform and make it ready for the kids. Add to it the constant panicked messages from parents because the kids (14 and over) have "nothing to do".
On a more worrying side, a couple of my parents' neighbours had to be taken to hospital with a serious case of the virus, and my mum was chatting to one of them just last week (when they still had no symptoms). My parents are in the main age risk group, and my dad has other health problems, so I'm really worried about them.11 -
March 19: My husband's command can't make up its mind on whether to send folks home or keep them working. As far as I'm concerned, what he does is non-essential, but the military obviously doesn't see it that way. Thing is, they work in a small office space and there's definitely more than 10 of them in that building.
Add to that that there was a confirmed case on our base among military members and their family reported just yesterday and this decision of theirs seems haphazard at best.
I get that if anyone in my immediate family gets it, we will probably be okay (just miserable during the duration), but I still worry an awful lot about spreading it to folks who aren't as robust. We have a lot of retired folks that live on the base and come here to do their shopping if they live out in town. On top of that, this city is full of old folks (warmer weather all year round) and homeless people. What about them? Just concerned, is all.
Doing my part not to be out and about if I don't need to be around people, but man.. it's driving me batty. Might go for a walk later. There's a lot of trails and pathways that are isolated from others, so I should be okay.
My heart goes out for all of you that currently still work in the public sector, be it medical, retail, education or emergency response. Y'all have a tough job, even more so these days.4 -
Day 4 of working from home.
My symptoms are better, but I am going stir crazy working from home. It will be at least until April 5th before we can get back to work as usual. Possibly even the end of April
I'm about the most 'cocooning'/'anti-social' person I know. I spend most of my weekends chilling and working out at home without even leaving the door, but even I'm getting cabin fever already, after less than a week.
I'm thinking of taking a long walk/several walks in the nearby countryside this weekend, my BF will be shocked3 -
March 19th Second update: Mississippi governor declared no school returns until after April 17th (if things get better and not worse), so kids are out school around here until then. No information yet on a curriculum we can teach at home or how (or if) this will affect their transition to the next grade.. or if they'll just have a late school year. So many unknowns, it's very frustrating for everyone.
People on base are freaking out about the news yesterday that someone on base contracted COVID-19 and had contact with numerous people through their line of work.. so yeah, there's that.
I guess I'll start looking at some home school curriculum and see what there is left to teach him this year to prepare him for third grade. Maybe throw in some science experiments for fun and order some more books off Amazon (while it's still up and running). We love to read, but libraries are, as expected, closed now.3 -

I’m at work today and the nursing supervisors took masks away from our nurses. They are limiting n95 masks from doctors and PAs because we don’t have enough.8

Last night my hair lady announced that because she is high risk she has decided to not do hair after tomorrow. I totally am behind her on that. My hair went years without a cut, so missing that appointment (or the next several) isn’t a big deal for me. I feel bad for her loss of income.
Coming into work this morning, we were all temp scanned after being asked if we have respiratory symptoms, or been in contact with positive tested people. Were given a hand out that explained how and where to log our temps and symptoms on our intranet. I guess we are all self-monitoring until further notice, which is fine.
They sealed off the entire 7th floor for use as an isolation area.
👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻This went up in our ER circle today, and haven’t gotten word if it is for drive through testing or screening patients.
Our cafeteria went take-out only and the area looks like a VR player’s dream without all the tables and chairs in there. (I have limited space when I set up my room scale boundaries.)
Our state’s cases went from seventy-something last night to 127 this afternoon.
Our morning safety huddle is done by conference call, now, and a very low census has me sending half of my people home only a few hours into their shifts. Not everyone sits on their PTO time like I do, and it makes me feel guilty to have to do it.
A lot has changed since Monday.6 -
Based on all I'm hearing, here & elsewhere, I'm thinking of giving shopping for fresh produce a pass tomorrow. I also hear that produce is mostly what's available at most stores, still...
Aside from a daily lemon or lime, I haven't had fruit in 1-wk & fruit's normally the bulk of my diet. I can hang on 2-wks, if that's still the suggested time we remain at home. Never eat canned food, but wish I had some canned peaches, at least.
Not really the frightened type, but I do have asthma... & no meds or health insurance... so, I guess I'll just be happy with citrus... I've got enough for another wk, so I'm lucky.4 -
I talked about my experience as an IC nurse in an earlier post. However I have realized today that I’m happier. Not because there is a pandemic and it is threatening people’s lives, but because I have seen so many people pull together and get things done. I have seen so many people finally take Infection prevention seriously. I was having serious doubts about humanity before this and now I have faith in humanity again. There are some amazing people in this world!!!!!5

I think if you go early in the day before the large droves of people are out you'll be fine. Take standard precautions, wipe down the cart handles, etc. Then, make sure you wash all fruits, veggies, etc before putting them away and again before consumption.
Going in the early morning will also help ensure you get the freshest fruits. Best to you!3 -

I have tried hard to be kind and patient with people during this but I am getting a bit fed up.
My sister in Texas went to the store hoping to get TP. None on the shelf. Sees a lady with some in her cart and asked where she found it. The lady says "oh, this was the last package. We don't need it but since it was the last one I figured I should grab it." She then nicely gave it to my sister to buy. But, WTF? Why are you buying stuff you don't need?
I had to stop at the store for prescriptions and milk. Went to get a cart and there is a guy with about 20 sanitizing wipes sanitizing his entire cart. And blocking the path to the carts so no one could get to them. He was seriously kneeling on the floor wiping around the cart wheels. ARGH! When I (politely) asked him to move he told me he was almost done.
I think I am starting to hate people. Good thing I have wine at home.10 -
The answer to this question changes day by day. First there was fear but now it's sadness, a great deal of sadness. We're all trying to make do with what we have because we are bent on survival. We're going to bootstrap it, figure it out as we go and with MFP as our witness we won't let those around us go hungry. We'll give them a hand and share what we have. We will make it.3

Posted earlier that I'm having trouble with stress eating but I suppose being on a lower calorie diet also means I won't be going through food as quickly as I used to. The extra is bringing me up to a 'maintain weight' calorie amount some days but at least that's not on top of the amount I used to eat.4

Why the hell are they doing the wheels and everything?! Ugh...
I have to get out of the apartment this weekend. Haven't left since last Saturday when I went to the grocery store. I need to get some food for the next couple of weeks. Benefits of this is that it curbs my eating out. But, dammit, I want a frickin' cheeseburger! Since moving here, I've yet to find a good place in this state. Same with Mexican food. A lot of Korean and Chinese restaurants. But, it's like Mexican and good burger joints are almost non-existent.2 -
Honestly, I don't think it will other than the groceries I'm used to getting are wayyyyy more difficult to find.
We just got the holing up in your house order last night but, since we can still exercise outside, that won't be affected.
Apparently the profession I work in is an essential one even tho we can do most, if not all, of it from home (who knew?!) so I still get to come to work. I say it like that because if I had to stay in my apartment all day it really WOULD affect me.

what about frozen blueberries other frozen fruits? those are a staple in our house for smoothies and to add to yogurt1 -

Sure, good idea... I just have to decide if I want to go to the market. But, I prefer fresh & heard that it's mostly fresh produce that's available... meat, cans & frozen meals are reportedly gone. We have such heavy traffic, heavier than usual, all day & night around here, so I've yet to venture out to even see what's going on at the stores.
It's good that I'm a stress non-eater, cuz I'm having to force myself to each once/day.1 -

Good advice, thank you. Didn't get around to it today & am wondering if I should bother trying to shop on the weekends, when so many more people usually do.
I think I'll hold out 'til Mon morning. Thx again. Best to you, too!1 -
I am seeing too many people being laid off from jobs and upset. Also wondering when I get to go back to school1
