    Actually there's TWO fig seasons! The first one is earlier and is figs that grown on LAST YEAR's new wood. Later is the "main" crop that grows on THIS YEAR's new wood. Where I live, we almost never get the main crop; by then it's cooler and damp, and the figs tend to rot on the tree before they are ripe. Last year was an exception. Climate weirdness and all. I have three different kinds of figs growing in my yard. I used to be indifferent to figs; only really had them dry. Then after I bought my house, I learned how to tell when they are ripe. Oh my! So good. I eat a bunch, give many away to people who appreciate, and dry as many as I can so I can eat 'em all year. Or well at least a couple more months. A good friend loves my dried figs; I always try to bring some on river trips.

    Pass the mac & cheese, please.....
