May Goal: 100 Miles
5/3: 11.07 miles
5/5: 6.25 miles
5/6: 5.71 miles
5/7: 5.16 miles
28.19/100 miles completed for May
464.35/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
It was another morning of perfect running weather. The moon was gorgeous when I started out. It was 55°F and already starting to get light at 6 am. By the end of the run it was daylight. It wasn't too humid and the dew point was 46°. So I ran a smidge over 5 miles even though I was only planning for 4. This is my favorite time to run. I wish it could be like that every day. The weather should be similar on Sunday for my virtual HM. I really hope it is.
@marisap2020 Good looking shoes! I'm glad they finally came in! And @quilteryoyo I hope your shoes don't take too long to get here.
@skippygirlsmom Champ is adorable and I love the shoes!
2020 races:
11/7/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon4 -
@skippygirlsmom Champ is beautiful and looks like an awesome running partner. Welcome to the family!!
Had a pretty good 7 mile run this morning. Great temp (63F) and light wind. Started feeling tired around mile 4. I heard a podcast a while back that said when you start feeling tired and just kind of blah, speed up for a bit and it will rejuvenate you. That seems counter-intuitive, but I tried it. Lo and behold, it worked! I started feeling better, and just kept it up, and just got faster through the end of the run. I think you get more efficient when running faster, and that just helps with fatigue. I won't do that on every run, but it's nice to know.

I forgot to mention I had on my brandie new Brooks when I had to chase that goofy dog over the river and through the hills, now they are dirty ha ha which is okay but you know you want them nice for a few runs.

Gorgeous morning. It might rain and/or snow later today and tomorrow so I wanted to take advantage while the sun was out and it was over 50 degrees. I took Stella out for a run/hike on the trails in the park by my house. The upper trails were pretty empty so I was able to drop her leash and let her run beside me. She does much better that way, not feeling like she's being dragged I guess. We ran slowly and walked up the steep hills. There was a lot of stopping and starting but it felt really laid back and I wasn't worried about time or pace or how far we'd go. At one point we nearly got hopelessly lost when I decided "hey, let's see what's up this steep trail" - turns out the trail kind of dies out and you get all caught up in thorny brush and then almost can't find where you came from. Eventually we backtracked to the steep hill to nowhere that we came up (which required some scooting on my butt) and found an actual trail again. Altogether we did 5.8 miles, of which 4 were classified as running (slowly). I really enjoyed this no expectations run and having a chance to explore and let Stella do her thing.
Oh, I realized about .5 miles into this run that I was wearing two different shoes. Same model, two different colors. Here's a few pics under spoiler:

@skippygirlsmom Loving the new family member! I'm at a computer all day too typing and sometimes I just can't anymore. Lol
@Avidkeo It would drive me crazy if my Garmin did not work right considering what I paid. I would send it in, and use Strava for the time being or if you have an older watch/fitbit
On shoes - because of my ball of foot/toe issue, I need to find shoes with a roomier/wider toe box. Not necessarily a wide shoe, just wider in the toe box. I really like my current ones ( @ContraryMaryMary The same as yours!) however I do have to keep the laces very loose on the top of the right shoe and parallel lace them. They are a snug fit which normally I like.
5 miles today, again great running weather. It really is going to suck when it gets hot soon. I'll have to go earlier and earlier - and I'm so not an early riser kind of person. I do it, I just don't like it. LOL.

Thanks guys, I'll send it back - after my 24k/15mile run tomorrow. A long run is NOT the time to be playing around with a new app that may or may not give me the info I want.
Would you use strava or map my run? Much the same?2 -
-
Whilst the children are home I have moved away from recording food and working on habits. Started a new marathon training plan in the hope September happens so running 4 days a week and doing C25K on the elliptical the other 3.
A pic of me one year ago to remind me why I need to stay focused. I don't remember being pregnant!9 -
@skippygirlsmom - You may need to give Champ some games/exercises/training that really makes his brain work so he doesn't decide to make up his own by running and getting chased. Of course I would recommend Agility (because Hobbes and I love it) and herding dogs are SO good at it) but anything like fun obedience (check out Rally) or learning tricks. There are all kinds of videos and resources online.
Oh and I love the shoes - makes me wish I could wear brooks but the toes are just too narrow for me.
@katharmonic - I would love to have somewhere like that to hike/run. Looks like so much fun! Stella looks like she is really enjoying it too!
@Avidkeo - I would send the watch in as well and use Strava or MapMyRun in the interim. They won't give you all the metrics but will keep you on your training for distance and pace. I would likely use Strava if I had to pick but they both do the same things. Strava also has the social side too if you want more of that.
@hamsterwheel6 - for shoes with wide toe boxes you might check out Altra and Topo Athletics. I personally like Topo better but both have wide toe boxes with narrow heels in their women's shoes
All the shoe porn makes me REALLY want a new pair of running shoes... It is taking so much restraint not to go buy a new pair. I may have to just look and see if any of my favorites are on sale you know because...
I may have made my goal too low for the month but I will adjust up later if I can run more.

@shanaber and @janejellyroll thanks guys.
Would I be crazy to buy a cheap GPS watch for the next month? Found a xiaomi watch for only $150 (about $80usd) so I can have pace while I'm running, or just suck it up?
Though realistically I'll just be throwing that money away cause I would probably never use it again.0 -
So enough of my FWP,
Today I ran 7 miles/11.5k according to Hal. It was glorious. I had set my alarm for 5:15 to give myself enough time to run before work, but actually woke just before 5. So got up, checked the temperature, it wasn't as cold as I expected it to be. Gear on, including my noxgear over my hydration pack haha. Though the sun was out, it was still pretty dark and I like to be safe.
I made sure I kept an eye on my pace, realising when I was going too fast, and slowing down. And in the end it felt really good and pretty easy.
I do worry about my hip flexor though, I noticed them starting to talk towards the end. I made a point of stretching these well, and may do some more tonight.
Tomorrow is another long run, 24k or 15 miles! I've planned my route, and my day. I'm doing an out and back, but am actually going to start in the middle. That way if I have to ditch for any reason I don't have the whole length to walk back lol. Also I can tackle the hilly bits at the beginning, with the flat all at the end, mimicking the run I'm going to be doing.
I'm not really nervous, just excited!
And today I looked ahead at my work schedule for the next few weeks and realised my longest run falls on a day I happen to be working. So I've asked for my rostered day off the following day, and I'll run it then. I figured 1 day early won't hurt haha.4 -

If I am to offer wise and intelligent advise I would say save your money.
I would also likely be a hypocrite.3 -

I'll spend my money on a long sleeve merino top instead.4 -

Regarding your hip flexor - make sure you massage your glutes thoroughly. These two are very much connected and my super tight hip flexor pain was resolved in minutes by treating my glutes.
As for the watch, here's my two cents. This could be a really good time to spend a month running purely by feel. It's easy to get hung up on numbers. Stop, and listen to your body without the distraction of pace and time. And relax and simply enjoy running for running's sake. If you plot your route in advance you'll get the right number of kilometres, and who cares if you come in a few minutes earlier or a few minutes later. Go old school!!!4 -
Glad you had a "glorious" run @Avidkeo . Can't wait to hear about your longer run tomorrow. I hope it is glorious too!
Today's treadmill run is brought to you by Highway to Heaven. The plan called for speed work. I did a 5 minute warm up walk, 10 minutes of easy run, then 5 x 1 minute vigorous effort/2 minutes easy, then 12 minutes easy to get to 3 miles ran. I ended with a cool down walk (enough to make 1 mile total walked). My easy pace was 4.5 mph and my vigorous was 7.0 mph! That's really fast for me and I was proud of myself.

To fill y'all in:
Monday 4/27 - Ran 3 miles. Finished around 0930, headache started around noon, noon:30. Finally ended about Thursday (4/30) afternoon/evening. Over the weekend, no coughing or fever, but my body felt like it had been beat with baseball bats & dragged benhind the car. Canceled my blood donation appointment. Monday I felt a little better.
Tuesday 5/5 - Ran 1.5 miles. Ended about 9:15am, headache started about 2-3pm.
I started thinking about it. Realized that this was only the beginning of HM training, and things are only going to get worse. I'm not really enjoying running right now like I was, as I'm too nervous to get headaches, my knees are painful, ankle is still hurting. Decided to take a break from running for a bit. I brought my road bike to the apartment from storage, so I'll walk, bike, yoga & ST, and run when I want to. Maybe I'll get stronger and find joy in it again, maybe this is my body's way of telling me that, after 7 years, my running days are over, no matter how I want to.12 -

Awww thanks! Woo hoo go you.
@ContraryMaryMary I really need a technical detox. Like I'm going to start turning my phone off too. So yeah this is actually good timing for me.1 -
6.05 miles tonight. Was supposed to be 2 miles warm-up, 2 miles at 8:13, 2 miles cool down. But I'm very slow and ended up being an average of 9:01 for those 2 miles. Just like the other run for week 16 of this training plan, I'll try to redo the week a 3rd time next week and hopefully can hit it. If I re-do the week enough times with failure, I may just have to change my goal entirely.
7 -
May 7th- 3.1miles another 5k and I talked on the phone the whole time so I clearly could have run faster 😂
11.7/50 miles complete3 -
You lot are enabelers.
Today I bought a long sleeve merino running top and a pair of merino socks (both smartwool).
As for the damned watch, randomly today after a week of being out of sync, and the day after garmin agreed finally to take it for a look, it's syncing properly...
I have my suspicions. I think I'll keep an eye on it over the weekend, but wonder if garmin has done something...5 -
Weekly race report! Wednesday my husband and I ran the 5th race of the Run the 901 challenge, the 10k. We drove down to our usual railroad access road. Passed another couple doing the same thing (wearing the race shirts and clearly running seriously) on our way to our start, which gave us a nice feeling of camaraderie. The road is still blocked, and this time it was blocked at both ends, so we didn’t have to deal with people zooming down from the open end, getting frustrated, and zooming back. It’s still not safe, though. We did nearly get flattened by a giant king cab which had pulled around the traffic barrels to get back there, and we kept having to watch out for a security guard and a cop patrolling in SUVs.
After last week’s 6 miler I was hopeful I could pull off a sub 1 hour 10k, but then my knee started complaining after my long run and I wasn’t sure I would even be able to run at all. Did a one mile test run and wasn’t hopeful. Gave it two days off, then went out with no expectations whatsoever - I planned to start off running at a sub hour pace and if I ended up walking instead, good enough.
Somehow my gps got set to kilometers instead of miles. Which led to me trying to do math in my head while running, which is not a thing that works. But in any case, I started off strong (road is also downhill at the start) and finished the first half on pace with a little bit of a buffer. However, by then my leg was complaining. Took a walk break, wasn’t sure I would be able to start running again, tried it, then some sort of endorphin thing happened and the pain went away, and by the last mile or so was back on pace with enough left in the tank for a fast finish. However the walk break had eaten up my buffer and I finished in 1:02:26. Which is 6:15 km pace, which I thought was 10 minute mile pace, which is what I had decided to aim for. It’s not, my mental math was off by a couple of seconds a kilometer. Oh well!
So, the million dollar question - did I get away with it, or did I end up making my knee worse? Day after and my knee is sore and I wouldn’t want to run on it today, but not any worse than it was after my long run last week. I don’t feel like I’m doing any lasting damage. My already crooked knee with the “weird” meniscus just hates me running on canted roads. Knee injuries are pretty self-limiting, I’ve been advised in the past about this knee that nothing is going to break or fall off, the only danger is that it might be painful. So as long as it’s not painful to run after a rest day, I plan to keep going. Next week’s race is 8 miles and I’m not sure whether I plan to run the whole thing or not.
We had perfectly beautiful weather for our run, cool and sunny when we started, with a strong breeze. We finished just at dusk and the enormous full moon was shining down the railroad tracks. I tried to take pictures of it but it glared the camera out like trying to photograph the sun. It was pitch black by the time we walked the two and a half miles back to the car, but it was just lovely.11 -

Awesome report! Sorry about the knee, that's so annoying! Hope that it keeps playing somewhat nice and doesn't entirely give up...1 -
Great work @rheddmobile! Funny how once you get into running you end up doing an awful lot of mental maths, especially those of us with slight ocd about mileage numbers and those converting between miles and km (I’m guilty of both!)
@dreamer12151 - I’m really sorry and I hope you start to feel better soon.
@skippygirlsmom - cute dog! I so wish I could have one (my younger daughter is obsessed) but it just isn’t fair as we are usually out of the house a lot. But a running companion like that would be amazing
@TheMrWobbly - hi, good to see you!
@Avidkeo and everyone who keeps buying and talking about buying lovely stuff, stop it! I can’t afford it (and other than new shoes I don’t really need it) but I want it allllllll!! 😩 😉
It is a bank holiday here in the UK today, and I went out a bit later than usual. It wasn’t too busy, but oh my goodness it is hot already! 16c which I think is about 60F? Not hot for many of you but a shock to the system for me after a dreary London winter.. anyway, despite the heat I ended up with a sub 11 minute average again and I’m still tackling those big hills so I’m pleased.
Have a good day all x

@dreamer12151 I would definitely go to the doctor and have those headaches checked out!
@Avidkeo I haven’t used Runkeeper in years, but it used to give you pace alerts during runs.3
