For those who count carbs/macros, do you count your veggies? Or free for all?

I log everything because I have medical issues and I want to be able to reliably relay what I've been eating to my doctor.3

You're counting carbs cause of diabetes? Or trying to lose weight.. cause counting carbs is pointless for the latter8 -
Since I am following a low carb diet, I count carbs as well as calories, with the focus being on the calories. I don't think it would be wise for me to start thinking of any food as free for all.5

If you don't count calories but you count carbs, does that mean you are counting the calories in vegetables like potatoes?
You should be. They are high in calories.3 -
@KrissDotCom I count for weight loss...I’m usually pretty way below calories due to the carb count /125 grams on high active days and 100-115 on low active days.

@orphia I don’t count potatoes as a veggie but as a starch and would count it as a carb. I’m taking spinach, collards, kale, broccoli etc.2

I logged potatoes but no other veggies. I ate as many veggies as I wanted. To me, this was a weight watchers like twist on MFP. I did set my logged calories low (1200) to accommodate unlogged veggies. I lost 75 pounds in 10 months at age 58 so this definitely was effective for me.5

I try to reach a minimum amount of fiber, so I count vegetables like the ones you mentioned.6

Absolutely I count everything. Those veggies can add up. Thinks like kale, spinach etc I might not weigh as I weigh everything else, they are the only thing I'll estimate by volume, because really, 1 cup is 12 calories so i I'm slightly over, it won't make or break me. But yes, every little counts...7

You're way under, but you're also not counting a food group, so you're probably less under than you realise.
You should be aiming to meet your calorie goal in any case, not come in significantly under it. For safe weight loss, slow and steady wins the race!8 -
I count everything except sandwich condiments - lettuce, tomato, slice of onion, mustard, etc - or things that are so bizarrely low in calories that it seems a waste of effort to record them, like a celery stick. Everything else gets counted.5

You should count your veggies. Especially the canned and frozen ones. They add sodium to preserve the contents. 10mg to 1500mg depending on what you buy.0

How do you know you are way under?
And just how "way under" are we talking because that can also be an unhealthy rate of loss7 -

I count everything, including veggies. Mostly it's because I eat a LOT of different kinds of veg (100-200 calories of bulky goodness per meal x 3 meals= a LOT of calories) but also because having an accurate idea of my nutritional profile, from extra protein to micronutrients (like magnesium, calcium, and iron) is important to me.8

Yes especially broccoli. I regularly eat 120 cal of steamed broccoli. My salads have 60 calories of lettuce, etc. If I didn't count that I would think I was eating a few hundred calories less per day.6

I count veggies - but often loosely - each carrot is 1 carrot, I dont weight them all (same goes for fruits like mandarines too)
(higher calories ones like potatoes I do)
and I dont bother with things like one slice of lettuce or tomato in a sandwich0 -
when I was doing keto, I was surprised at how quickly even green leafy vegetable carbs added up. If you have a carb goal, I would say count everything.7

I usually eat at least a few hundred calories of vegetables per day. If I didn't count them, my weight management would be a mess because I'd be way underestimating what I was eating.4

Yes, and no. I can easily eat 300kcal of veggies in a day - if I didn't count them, I would be over my goal and not achieving what I want to achieve. However... I don't necessarily count every single gram - if I know my sandwich usually has 3 pieces of lettuce, i'll use a regular count - e.g. every sandwich has just 10g of lettuce accounted for, even though it might be 6g one day and 14g the next. The calorie value is just too low to worry about too much.
I have some veggie-heavy recipes that, for example, use one carrot, three zucchini - I don't modify the weights inside the recipe as the value is negligible across the whole dish.3 -
I count them, but rarely weigh them properly. I guesstimate, use things like "half a package" and copy the previous entry of the same veggie regardless of how much I actually ate it. I pay more attention to avocado, since it's pretty high calorie.3

If it goes in my mouth then I count it because even if I don't count it my body will7

I didn't count nonstarchy veggies on the reducing part of my plan (although I did exclude things like tomatoes and carrots), but I do now on maintenance. On the other hand, I stayed under 1100 calories that whole time to allow a little leeway. Now I'm more serious about monitoring my TDEE.1
