New diabetic

This week I have been told I am a new diabetic. My A1C was 8.3, and when I asked if this was reversible, I was told probably not. I'm looking for information on how to tackle this roadblock. If it's not reversible, then I can deal, but I know there has to be some ways to get it under control and make it better. I really didn't receive any advice from my doctor, just take this pill twice a day and test your blood sugar twice a day, write it down & come see me in two weeks. Advice on diet, proper foods, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have diabetes, but I'd ask for an appointment with a registered dietian. My Dad's diabetes are not reversible but managed with medication, and a proper diet. A dietian was a big help when he was first diagnosed.2

Nurse here, my recommendations: Find an endocrinologist or a diabetic management program to help you with professional medication management and dietary advice. If you’re not feeling the provider, keep searching until you find one you “vibe” with. A good doctor is a great start to this “hurdle”. Join a support group, peers can be a great help.
Start slowly by cutting out or changing one thing at a time so you don’t feel overwhelmed (such as cutting soda or switching to a more complex carb such as whole wheat bread instead of white bread). Start exercising slowly if you’re not doing so already, like going for a walk or parking farther from the door more often. Exercise can lower your blood sugar.
I work with a lot of people with diabetes and they seem to get overwhelmed by it all and just give up. Unfortunately diabetes doesn’t go away on its own and you have to work at it, but it’s completely doable to live with it and even possibly reversible.
Keep a diary, and Log your blood sugars and food so you can see how your body responds and to help your doctor adjust your meds. You got this!2
