Are potatoes a no-go for those of you trying to lose weight or maintain? Do you include them in moderation or let it rip? I'm talking mainly about the whole small steamed potatoes....not mashed or fried.

Potatoes are fine , they are a great food. a large white potato might have 140 cals - 25-30 carbs, they won't make you fat. The sour cream or the french fries are a different matter however.9

We go through five pounds of potatoes every two weeks.
Last night was a baked potato. Later this week it’ll be fries and a burger.
Log and load! (The air fryer that is!)
Get out of the “forbidden food” mindset. As long as you can fit them in your CICO plan, you’re golden.18 -
Mmm mashed potatoes 🤤 nothing wrong with potatoes, even deep fried as chips - obviously everything is better in moderation- but you could technically lose weight by just eating fried food as long as you still maintain a calorie deficit. Potatoes aren’t just empty husks of carbohydrate, they include a fair amount of vitamins and eaten whole, a decent amount of fibre. They’re a good part of a varied diet along with lots of veg, fruit, sources of protein and fats.8

I ate a ton of potatoes losing 110 lbs...I still eat them daily13

Small potatoes with the skin on have fiber and they are relatively low calorie. And most importantly they are very filling.6

I eat potatoes all the time...they really aren't particularly calorie dense...I really don't know why they get such a bum rap, they are a nutritional powerhouse. They are definitely a dietary staple for my family regardless of my weight management objectives.12 -
I love red potatoes steamed, cut them, some olive oil and salt and pepper... yum
And fries are yummy also, but I don’t eat fast food at all (just don’t like it), so I eat frozen fries baked in the oven.4 -
I eat potatoes all the time -- both when I was losing weight and when I was maintaining. Roasted, mashed, in soups and stews, even fried. They don't really have THAT many calories, you just have to be aware of your portion sizes (like lots of foods). They're filling (for me) and have a good array of nutrients.
Would I "let it rip" with potatoes? No, but then I don't do that with any food.6 -

No food is off limits for me. Weight it and log it.7 -

Potatoes are rich in nutrients...they are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, potassium (they put a banana to shame), B6, and manganese. A medium russet also has around 5 grams of protein which isn't too shabby for a vegetable.9 -
I’m currently eating potatoes. Lol. The funny thing is (I come from a restrictive eating background/ED so I forbade myself from eating potatoes!) that now I find them so filling that I struggle to eat more. I’m in maintenance now but I will still eat potatoes with butter. End of story.4

Totally agree with this. Why the bum rap? I can easily see how a blight could lead to famine in places people rely on them. They are so nutritious. And versatile! A million ways to incorporate them into various dishes. Let it rip. I mean, weigh and log what you eat, as you would with anything, but there's no reason to avoid them.2 -
I love potatoes. I don't "let it rip" as they do have calories - but if they fit my calories, why would I not eat them?0

after reading this thread I put a large russet potato in the oven for supper. Will eat it with a glob of Kerry Gold Irish Butter11

I'm eating a pizza with mushrooms and potatoes on it right now..I love potatoes! I eat them in some form nearly every day.1

I try to stay away from them and those calories on chocolate.0

I eat 500g of steam sweet potato a day. It's 430 calories that I can fit into daily intake regardless of if i'm trying to lose or maintain.0

if you want to loose weight and just get it over with, then no potatoes just eat a meat ie protein and a green vegetable, so chicken and broccoli NO rice, salmon and green beans NO quinoa, steak and asparagus NO potatoes, eggs and spinach NO bread, something and something NO tortilla
protein + green veggie
you can thank me after 6 weeks! ha ha2
