Potatoes

Potatoes are great, and I am another who eats them regularly, along with rice, pasta and bread. I need my carbs. I just track them as part of my calories. There are so many lovely ways of making potatoes.2

Bad advice OP. Eat what you like--in moderation. We're in this for the long haul.14 -
OP. There was once a thread running by a guy who lost over 100lbs. He ate mostly potatoes. He mashed them and put them in a nonstick waffle maker and ate them crispy and plain. I thought it was too restrictive like the above post I quoted, but you can lose weight eating them. Just watch your sauces and fats.4

Or, if you want to eat rice, potatoes, beans, egg, bread, tortillas - any food really - then do so in portion sizes that fit into your calorie allowance.
I cant remember exactly what happened 6 weeks after starting my weight loss journey, short term quick fixes weren't in my plan - but here I am maintaining 7 years later.
You can thank me after 7 years too.

All foods in moderation, portion control, and staying at a calorie deficit, for weight loss. This is a lifelong commitment. No sense eliminating any food, just learn portion control, and staying within daily calorie, whether losing or maintaining weight. Watching proper nutrition requirements for good health.6

@B_Plus_Effort it boggles my mind when people like you come on the forums and spew awful completely incorrect “advice”.
OP some foods have more nutritional value than others, but no food will keep you from losing weight. Potatoes happen to be yummy and healthy. I wouldn’t recommend the potato only diet as that is both restrictive and would keep you from eating other nutrient rich foods, but you COULD eat ONLY potatoes and lose weight. Just like you could eat ONLY cupcakes and lose weight.
You SHOUD try to eat a balanced diet instead though. And include whatever you like as long as it fits within your calorie goals.7 -

Wow. In all honesty, I’d rather still be fat than have such a hopelessly (as in no end in sight) restrictive diet. There is joy in all foods. They’re simply in smaller amounts than before.
If this is your six week plan, I sincerely hope you loosen up the reins in week seven.11 -

And then gain all the weight back because you didn’t learn how to eat the foods you enjoy in moderation. There’s a reason there are so many of us who are human yo yo’s. We lose weight through some silly idea of restricting everything and then go back to eating “regular” and gain it all back...5 -

How is eating 400 calories of salmon and potato going to result in me losing weight slower than me eating 400 calories of salmon and broccoli?12 -

How is eating 400 calories of salmon and potato going to result in me losing weight faster than me eating 400 calories of salmon and broccoli?
Jane--you've got it turned around. He thinks that if you eat salmon and broccoli you'll lose more and faster than salmon and potato, but then again, he's keto and that's pretty much a religion. I suppose because it's hard to stick to if you don't convince yourself that it's marvelous. My apologies to those ketoer's who like it and don't try to convince everyone to to it.4 -

You should do a Google search on the Penn Jillette potato diet... might dispel some of your nonsense about potatoes.4 -

No, it's a useful reminder of my fallibility!1 -

Jeez, I for sure can't eat that many NOs. 😉
Since I haven't eaten meat or fish since 1974, that's another pitfall, for me.
Fortunately, I already lost 50+ pounds in less than a year (and stayed at a healthy weight for 5 years since, BTW), I don't *need* to do that. And pretty much no one else *needs* to do it, either, unless they have food allergies or something.
Jeez.
OP: I had a nice bowl of roasted potatoes with ketchup (yeah, lowbrow) while first reading your post. They were delicious.
So are rice, quinoa, bread, tortillas, and all kinds of other things that aren't green or meat, and they're all things one can eat (in proper portions, proportions, and frequencies) while losing weight and simultaneously getting good overall nutrition.
Eat whatever you like within your calorie goal, to manage your weight. On top of that, get decent well-rounded nutrition for health, energy level, and other good stuff.
Don't buy into the "good foods/bad foods" or "diet foods/fattening foods" nonsense. Individual foods are just puzzle pieces you combine to hit a calorie goal and get good nutrition, while feeling satiated and enjoying what you eat.9 -

What are you talking about? Honestly, is your purpose in life to make the life of others miserable and to spout misinformation?
My dinner tonight will be a veggy burger, with a bun, and with pan roast potatoes on the side. Oh, and no broccoli but radishes and avocado. I'll probably be 2kg up tomorrow, just because it's not chicken and broccoli.5 -
Unless you're talking crisps, fast food fries, or some prepacked frozen creation, it's just a vegetable! Lots of fibre and nutrients, and a healthier carb than bread.

You mean anyone who wants to crash diet. And it's called crash for a reason.
Call me crazy, but I thought mfp was a place for people who wanted to build lifelong healthy habits, not yo-yo diet.8
