@rheddmobile Congratulations on your PR for the 5K. That's fantastic.
@katharmonic Great run. When I run on the treadmill, I always rely on it for the distance, but my Garmin for calories burned. Enjoy your skiing lesson. I haven't skied in years, but really enjoyed it when I did.
@ContraryMaryMary Wow! That's a lot of running. So glad your coach is giving you Christmas Day off. Isn't that special. Enjoy your vacation at the beach!
Congratulations on finding the perfect house @polskagirl01 !
@mbaker566 Wow! Glad you didn't go. That could have been disastrous! I hope those who were shot are okay.
Not sure what Christmas is going to bring here. Mom and I were planning to go to my niece's for our family Christmas, but if the weather prediction is accurate, we won't be going anywhere. They are calling for rain Thursday, with falling temperatures, turning into snow and a low of around 12°F. That will mean a layer of ice with about 3 inches of snow on top. If that happens, I am going to try to walk to her house so she/we won't have to spend the entire day alone. Normally, I would be excited about a white Christmas. But, not this!
Yeah, when we get a white Christmas in Tennessee it mostly means ice storm!
Right now Memphis is forecast to be clear but cold. We usually do Christmas breakfast at my mom’s and it is supposed to be just about freezing. She was wanting to hold breakfast outside but it sounded pretty purgatorial trying to relax and eat in the cold so we are just quickly exchanging gifts and giving her a bento box with Christmas treats.3 -
@martaindale i believe the bonk run is to help our bodies "learn" to continue going after we've reached low glycogen level.
i didn't do this one because my hip was strained but i probably wouldn't have anyways. i don't think the science really supports training this way. but i remember that in the Prefontaine movie one of the coaches or runners said that the wall we think we are hitting really isn't the wall. that there is a whole other wall behind it. and i think the bonk runs help us deal with the gap between our "mental wall" and THE WALL. like when you think you're done but you do have a little umph to speed up to the finish line.
either way, not really my thing. but it's all in good fun so whatever4 -

Yesterday’s Yeti 12 Days of Christmas challenge was to run some place that you’ve never ran before. At the top of my driveway, I can see an old fire watch tower on a distant mountain. I decided I would run up to it. I had not been up there since I was a teenager. The bottom set of steps of the 100 foot steel tower have been removed to discourage people from climbing up in the tower. The road leading up to the tower is a dirt/gravel narrow road. Once you get to the top of the mountain, you have an additional quarter of a mile climb through the woods. Round trip was 6.33 miles from the church where I parked and 1578 feet elevation gain.
I took this picture from the parking lot of the little church. I circled the tower on the mountain.
Picture of the tower.
View from the top overlooking the valley.
Today’s Yeti 12 Days of Christmas challenge was to walk 3 miles and then run 3 miles. It was 25F this morning. I walked 0.67 of a mile before I decided to move a little faster to get warm. I ended up with 7 running miles plus the little walk.
Hugs to everyone who needs them!

Tuesday ran trails 5 miles at WC Johnson park - the weather was absolutely beautiful, wore shorts and short sleeves and was so comfortable! Unfortunately it meant there were way too many people at the park, and they all seemed to be holding hands and walking blocking the whole path. Several times when the trails allowed we ran off trail into the woods to pass people, once we stopped dead and stared down a large group until they moved so we could pass. We are past being polite, my husband shouts, “Passing on your left, move over!” And if we are passing face to face and they don’t move I point right at them and gesture to them to move. Despite our best efforts had to pass within 6 ft of people several times. On the upside I got to test the limits of my anaerobic running abilities, by holding my breath and sprinting!
It’s exhausting since right now our local case rate per capita is one of the highest in the world. You should just assume everyone you see has Covid - health department actually announced that in so many words, assume you and everyone else in the entire county has Covid until proven otherwise. So, me and the four old people who still read local news know about that now! They need to put up billboards or something. It’s maddening since I really wanted to run trails at the park where the ground is soft, rather than across the river where it’s all rocks and gravel. My legs appreciated the break but now I will be freaking out for the next week and a half. Assuming it’s not already too late we can’t run at that park anymore. Why can’t people just step to the side? it’s not that hard, just try a little tiny bit!
I should mention that the actual RUNNERS we passed, which was about four people, were all very polite about getting over and passing, we smile and nod instead of shouting “HAVE A NICE DAY!” or “HEY THERE!” Right into the other person’s face exactly as we pass each other, and we both go as far to the side as possible, gesturing first to indicate which way we are heading. Cyclists are cool too, I saw two groups both pull off onto a side path until others passed them. It’s just the darned casual walkers who need to get with the program.7 -

That looks so fun! Beautiful pictures!2 -
@Teresa502 You are doing great with the Yeti Challenge. I love the view from the top of the mountain. The fire tower looks pretty run down. Not sure who would want to climb it at this point, but I'm sure some teenage boys would take it as a challenge. It's good that they removed the steps.
@rheddmobile Glad the weather was good for your run. Sorry the walkers didn't cooperate as they should. I don't get why people won't do what they are supposed to.3 -
Thanks, everybody for the falling well-wishes!
@eleanorhawkins I am so, so, so sorry. How are things today?
@Teresa502 CONGRATULATIONS!
I had to skim - I was hoping for an easy work day but nah. it's been crazy annoying and stressful. I did get to work from the hospital yesterday - My daughter had surgery - it wasn't the worst or super invasive. I got my own little room to wait and work in so that was nice and everybody was so compassionate and catered to her autism in such huge ways. I mean, they REALLY went out of their way to make sure she was comfortable.
Anyway. Still running. Can't say enough how glad I am that I adopted the 4am running because I don't think I'd be running at all if I hadn't. Life is so busy!
I still miss you all and I need to check in more often.
In the meantime,
here is what i wrote after the run this morning. I woke at 3:45AM, before the alarm this time!
Up before the alarm today. I have said before: there is not much that I fear, after everything. There are just a few things, one of which is getting to the end of my life (as if I know when that’s going to be) or living any part of it and knowing inside myself that I didn’t do all I could. Didn’t really reciprocate this gift with everything.
I can tell you all about darkness dealing and evils that creep up on you as well as evils that you knowingly walk right into and stay there because sometimes it really did feel amazing to just feel anything at all: long term brokenness.
Today this is enough, though. To just say I am so grateful I lived and that I will keep showing up and keep fighting to give it everything. Mercy is new every morning.
Maybe the remains of the paths I take (have taken) will create a path for you, too. That’s literally what this is for. Love so hard and lead strong.
Leo Tolstoy said, “The antagonism between life and conscience may be removed in two ways: by a change of life or by a change of conscience.” I think you can have both because from the heart flows every single thing. We can have both.
(PS: how bout a 57F morning at the end of the December?! I’ll take it! The wind was insane. When it was at my back I was a bird and when it wasn’t, I was a soldier. May need to run with bricks so I don’t blow away).

Other than Big Macs and chocolate shakes, Christmas cookies are nature's most perfect food.5
-
@Camaramandy648 I'm glad the hospital workers were all good with your daughter and hope she heals quickly. You are awesome, getting up and running that early. I just can't...not that I can run right now anyway.
I'm with you @Tramboman !

Yep. Me too.
@skippygirlsmom our overall living costs here are lower than they were for us in the USA. Electricity and fuel for the car are much higher, but there are also more eco-friendly options available in cars and appliances. And I've read way too much about people like your former neighbor. Possible trigger warning, under spoilerA family from my hometown found out that the husband had been molesting children for years. He's in jail for the rest of his life, but his now-ex wife and son have teamed up to tell their story and to educate people and organizations like churches on the methods abusers use to manipulate and deceive people so they can get away with their crimes, and what we can do to stop them. So after reading their blogs, and the training I've sat through at several jobs I've had... I can imagine how tricky the guy is and how cleverly deceived the woman was to have moved in there with her CHILDREN, and it makes me angry just thinking about it, but he should never be allowed around children. If he's really sorry for what he did he'd be in agreement with needing to stay away from children and not pursuing relationships with single moms.3 -
6.2 miles this evening. Wasn't going to run today. Left shin hurt this morning. But had a crappy day at work and took off early. Shin felt better, nobody was home when I got there, so laced up and went out. It was VERY windy, but temp in low 60s, so wasn't bad. The run felt pretty good, and glad I went out.

Another 5 mile run this morning. It was 57°F but so windy it was ridiculous. But it was a good run overall. Tomorrow at 5:00 am it is supposed to be freezing. I don't really want to run when it us that cold, but if I don't run before work I may not get the chance. So I probably will.

@shorkster congrats on your first 5k! You are doing awesome!
@Teresa502 that sounds fun to run somewhere new - that you can see from your house. I would have wanted to climb that tower.:) The 12 days challenge is more varied than I was expecting. You guys are doing great and I hope you are having fun with it.
@Camaramandy648 I'm glad things went well with your daughter's surgery. You are a champion with your 4 am running.
@skippygirlsmom - you too with the 4 am wakeups to run. Take it easy and I hope the tendonitis heals up.
@Scott6255 glad your run went well after the shin pain and the crappy day. Hope it continues to feel fine.

My running buddy and I signed up for a virtual Wine & Christmas Cheer 5k run, purely because we wanted the cute wine tumbler and t-shirt. We planned to kind of replace the super fun It's a Wonderful Run we have done in December the last couple of years. That run is packed with people and has people offering shots of alcohol along the way, everyone's dressed up in crazy holiday gear and lights, and it's a definite experience. Well, we couldn't do that obviously this year. We wanted to get the run done before the holiday and wear our swag shirts and bring along our wine tumblers. But they ended up shipping later than expected. My friend got hers over the weekend but mine still hasn't arrived and the USPS tracking seems to be just shrugging its shoulders and saying "yeah, it's late". We decided to just run our run tonight and look at some Christmas lights and do our best to have a little Christmas cheer. Neither of us if feeling super full of holiday spirit though, so instead of Wine & Christmas cheer we substituted Bailey's and b*tching. Ha. We really did have a fun time but had to do our usual talk it out session too. Maybe my swag will arrive tomorrow.
Just 8 more days to run this year! I am having stress dreams that I forget to go for a run and ruin my streak Hopefully I can keep it together!
Those of you who use Strava, have you looked at your 2020 stats little video through app? It's kind of cool. One of the stats they have is total elevation gain for the year and I am at 97,917 feet or the year. Compared to 43,852 for last year. Which is from hiking 23 mountains, not just from running hills (some of you all probably get that kind of elevation running, I'm sure!). But now I'm kind of wondering if I can get to 100,000 before the end of the year...hmm, just one more mountain would do it.
Or, I just realized, I could believe Garmin instead, which says I've done 115,743 ft in the last 365 days.7 -

This will be my first sober Xmas as I'm a recovering alcoholic and running is a very welcome distraction. Nearly 9 months sober and I feel amazing 😁
Have a good Xmas everyone.11 -

I have been lurking with this group getting to know yall as I plan to join in January. But just wanted to say Scott that when my shoes start to wear my left shin starts to hurt. Happens 100% of the time and as soon as I put on a new pair boom. all well.

@polskagirl01 and @quilteryoyo I know it makes you wonder. In my town in Jersey they couldn't live within so many feet of a playground or school. When they "created" our town they gave out plots of land like 40x100 so they were deep but not wide so many never built on them and they eventually went back to the town as owners. Well to stop sex offenders (pedophiles in particular) from moving in the town built playgrounds on all those lots, great for the kids, but it left NO area of the town where a house was less than the allotted amount of feet they needed to be away. Smart little town. Thanks for the insight into the cost of living.
@katharmonic thank you I'm sure it'll feel better soon.
@tramboman I'm with you on the Christmas cookies, I'm headed out to run in a few minutes and just ate a chocolate chip snowman Skip made yesterday.
I've been putting off going out all morning because I HATE HATE HATE wind. I'm good with the negative numbers to run in IF there's no wind. Right now it's 40F, windy as all crap and it wants to rain....ugh.
For those of you ahead of us in the time Merry Christmas.7 -

Cloudy, mid 40s F, and very windy today, so seemed like a good set of excuses for a treadmill plod. Also decided to comment on my "accomplishments" below. With a 50 percent success rate, the glass is both half full and half empty.
It's all good!!!!
@SummerSkier Welcome!!
@shorkster Keep it up -- on both fronts
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs -- Fail
Run at least 4 5k races -- Fail
Get a 5k PR -- Fail
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles - Completed 10-11
Stretch goal: If I can average 169k per month, I can run 2020k in 2020 - Completed 12-12
Run the Year Team: Pavement Pounders -- Completed 9-29
2020 races:
9-8 to 9-13 "Virtual Boston with Vincent" Time goal 5:15:00; actual time 4:47:015 -
Thanks for the tip @SummerSkier. I get shin pain every few months. It has plagued me ever since I started running 8 years ago. Usually in November/December I can count on it coming. I have 3 pairs of shoes in rotation, and I ran in the newest ones (less than 50 miles on them) the day before my shin pain.
I've just resigned to the fact that I will always get that pain at some point during the year.6 -
@katharmonic I could use some Bailey's and bi***ing right about now too. Glad you got to see the lights anyway and were able to talk out your stress. That's important.
@shorkster Congratulations! You are doing great! Keep it up.
@skippygirlsmom I love that your town built all of those playgrounds to keep the sex offenders away. AND, it the kids have a lot of safe places to play. It must be a great little town.5 -
@shorkster, that's fantastic. Good for you!
Welcome @SummerSkier!
@Tramboman well that's a statistically significant percentage of goals reached, I would say! And big ones too. Well done.
@quilteryoyo I'd pass you some Bailey's or salted caramel vodka if I could! More virtual hugs your way.

I tried to be motivated this morning and get my run done before my 7 am strength training. Which I was already wondering why I'm doing that on a holiday while I'm on break, but ok, I'll get it out of the way early. I got to the gym at 6:30 to find it closed. Crap. I look it up and the holiday hours today are 7 am - 12 pm. So I drove over to the a shopping plaza just down the road and ran the parking lots there because there was enough light, it was too dark to run on the road and I didn't bring lights. Or gloves or a hat, or even long pants. But fortunately it was in the upper 40s so not that cold, although very windy. I did two miles of crazy looping around and then drove back to the gym. Strength training was all lower body today and it was intense. My legs were getting pretty shaky. But after that was done I went outside and it was over 50 degrees and not yet raining so I felt like I really should run some more. I ran down the road and bike path about a mile and back, with a little extra in the parking lot to get to another 2 miles.
Then I went home and thought I better take Stella out because it was lightly raining now but supposed to get worse and rain all day. So we walked in the woods another 2.5 miles to get that done. It was not bad, just a little drizzly. Although Stella looked like she'd been through a good soaking by the time we got home.
Now it's time for naps! My quads are going to be pretty angry about all this later.
Have a lovely Christmas eve, and Merry Christmas to our friends on the other side of the dateline! Wishing everyone a little peace and joy.8 -
@katharmonic I wouldn't be able to walk after all of that. You are a beast. Have a great Christmas!2

@skippygirlsmom that's brilliant what your town did.I'm all for forgiveness and helping people who've made mistakes, and in cases like that I believe helping means not providing more opportunities to repeat the crime.
I've decided this will be a rest/recovery week, and I can do what I want! For my "40 for 40" challenge, I have a whole year to get those 40 weeks of 40 km in. That means I have 12 weeks of leeway, and at 8 weeks in I haven't used any of them yet. So it's totally reasonable and doesn't take me off track. Today I went for a hike (half running back and forth, half walking, standing, picking up trash and pushing a bicycle through mud and up hills) in the woods with the kids. Great fun!
Merry Christmas!9 -

Another 5 mile run this morning. It was 57°F but so windy it was ridiculous. But it was a good run overall. Tomorrow at 5:00 am it is supposed to be freezing. I don't really want to run when it us that cold, but if I don't run before work I may not get the chance. So I probably will.

Day 11 of the Yeti 12 Days of Challenge – Run a 5k. I kept waiting for a break in the rain but it never came. I finally went out around 1:00 pm in a light rain. Temp was 47F and the wind was blowing. It wasn’t bad when it was at my back but when I turned it would blow the rain right in my face. By the time I finished there wasn’t a dry stitch of clothing on me. But, I didn’t melt! My legs are still a little sore from Tuesday’s run to the Fire Tower and it probably didn’t help that I rode my exercise bike 21 miles before heading out. No one ever said I was a smart runner. Our rain is supposed to change over to snow this evening so I may have to resort to the treadmill tomorrow.
@katharmonic – The Yeti Challenge was not what a lot of people, myself included, thought it would be. When I registered, the description indicated we would not have to run over 13 miles in a day. I was psyching myself up to run several miles each day but the longest assignment we had was 7 miles. It was a fun challenge and kept me going though and it was nice to have someone tell me what to do for a few days! (I would have given you a boost to get to the first rung of steps on the tower and probably would have joined you!)
@shorkster – Congratulations on your running accomplishments this month and for your sobriety milestone! Remember that amazing feeling when times are hard.
@quilteryoyo – Bailey’s sounds good to me too and you deserve to do all the bi***ing you want! Let ‘er rip!
Congrats on your accomplishments 2020 @Tramboman!
Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight!

Merry Christmas everyone!
I made one of my goals for 2020 which I had given up on due to injuries. I set goals twice per year, once at New Year’s and then on my birthday in June, to be finished by Christmas. Then the time between Christmas and New Year’s is free time with no goals to worry about. One of my birthday goals was to get back to running sub-hour 10k. Got injured, figured it wasn’t happening. But we did it today! It was cold with 20 mph winds and the place we wanted to get takeout after running was set to close in an hour and a half, so we agreed to run 10k tempo instead of our usual 8 mile long run. And then when we got out there it was just too flipping cold to run slowly, so we kept pushing the pace to stay warm. By mile 4 my husband said, “I feel like I’m hitting that wall...” and I said, “Don’t stop now, if we keep this up we can make a sub 1 hr time!” So we did! 58:43 which is a PR for him and 2nd fastest 10k time for me, plus the first time I’ve run under an hour since tearing my Achilles’ tendon in spring of 2019! So stoked to make my goal at the last possible minute, I feel like I earned my Christmas dinner!9
