What kind(s) of exercise have you tried so far? There are many ways to exercise: walking, running, cycling, cardio machines, group classes, dancing, hiking, rowing, swimming, climbing, tennis, circuit training, boxing, roller blading... etc.. Alone or with friends. Indoors or outdoors. DVD, YouTube, trainer. Mornings, afternoons, evenings.
It's easiest to stick to if you pick something you enjoy doing at a time that works for you.2 -
Completely agree with @Redordeadhead. There are loads of different exercises you can do. Mix it up and find something you enjoy that way you will find it easy to keep doing it consistently1

you lose weight in the kitchen.
you gain fitness in the gym.
While I encourage activity (of whatever kind you DO like) for cardiovascular and muscular health, to lose weight, you only need to eat at a deficit!4 -
Bit of a problem if you have ambitions to look like someone who exercises. (Not squishy!)
A more serious problem for your long term health.
Perhaps start from a different direction - what activities or sports that involve movement do you enjoy?2 -
Maybe try to do activity rather than exercise for now. Play with baby/kids. Take them on walks (if that's allowed where you are). Do some major cleaning.1

I suggest you try logging calories daily, be honest, hit your goals, and when you start to see success you will get motivated to find an activity that suits you. I'm only 14 days in, but so far so good. Feel free to add me. Best wishes!1

For exercise, do what's fun if you are only looking for general health and a bit of a calorie burn.1

I found that if I tried a new exercise with a “what if” attitude instead of “omg I hate to exercise” one, it made the experience a whole new deal.
I had a trainer a few years back at Workiut Anytime, retired marine, who felt it his job to bark at me and tell me everything I was doing wrong. I hated going to the gym. It was painful, I couldn’t do much of what he said and saw no reason to be doing it.
Had a second trainer at LA Fitness, who, although a nice guy, acted like he was wasting his time with a lard *kitten* like me, and was collecting his fee.
Ten years later and many pounds less, I talked with a friend who goes to a small locally owned competitive gym- not a chain, a muscle type gym I simply couldn’t picture myself in. I commented I wished I could tone up and he suggested contacting someone there. OMG. What a freaking difference. My trainer is encouraging, explains in detail why we are doing certain moves, the proper way to do them, and how I can expect to benefit if done properly. I love the small private gym experience. It is totally different than a big chain.
I love love love going to the gym now.
I never ran before. I mean ever. Never ever ever ever. I decided to try the Couch to 5k app. Won’t lie. It was a struggle and I hated it at first. But the day I ran several minutes straight, the day I (me?!!!) ran 5k without stopping, they were milestones in my life.
Something as simple as getting appropriate footwear made it so much more enjoyable.
Treating myself to a great mat for mat classes? Revolutionized my practice.
Sometimes something like an attitude, the place itself, a person, a simple piece of equipment can be transformative in how you feel about exercise.
Find something that appeals to you and go to it with a sense of wonder and potential enjoyment.
