Rangitoto is a dormant volcano so running was on very uneven and sharp scoria (stuff you truly don’t want to fall over on). It was pretty slow going until we crossed the causeway to Motutapu. This is farmland so lots of grass. Fortunately, trails had been mown through a lot of it but it was still rather uneven underfoot. After a couple of hours my ankles were quite sore from having to work so hard.
The other complication was our leader (who is Swiss). She told me Motutapu was flat. It is patently obvious Rangitoto is not but she said we’d do 20km around Motutapu and then those with the will and the energy could go up Rangitoto, about another 10km. Anyway, she lied. Apparently the Swiss have a different idea of what constitutes a hill.
When we got to the fork in the trail saying 45mins to the summit or 45 mins to the wharf and the ferry home my legs were shot. We’d done 22km incorporating 500m-plus of elevation. That’s some serious climbing. I could not handle another 6km (the best guess as to the distance to the top then back down). Consequently I and another woman headed to the wharf while the other three headed to the summit.
By the time we got to the wharf we were close on 25km. About 15 minutes later our friends arrived. Turns out the route to the summit then back down was only 850 metres longer than the flattish route we took home. I was gutted. I really wanted to go up the volcano but had no way of knowing it was such a short detour! Next time. Although I don’t think that will come too soon. It was a hard day.
Fortunately the weather was on our side. It can be blistering out there - they say it’s usually 5 degrees hotter than the mainland. The black rock absorbs the heat and you can feel it coming up under you. Also, there are very few trees so you’re at the mercy of the sun. We had heavy cloud and drizzle for much of the day - still very warm and super humid - but not unbearable. We had to carry a lot of water plus had more supplies stashed at the wharf for after (no drinkable water on either island).
Great day. Lots of laughs (mostly at the expense of the Swiss friend who confidently pronounced at the end that anything under 1000 metres elevation is flattish).
Incidentally, her Strava shows less than 100 metres extra climbing to ascend Rangitoto!
A few pics below:
Oh wow! I've visited Rangitoto but not to run it. Absolutely incredible. And I remember the heat! Did you see the americas cup boats racing at all? Sounds like a fantastic day!3 -
We’re they racing today?
Sorry, not much of a sailor. And it was raining on the ferry home so we were indoors.2 -

Great news on the recovery progress @skippygirlsmom and @quilteryoyo! Some great running and lovely pictures out there.
London is looking pretty now as currently blanketed in snow near me. I’m really happy I managed to get out for a run before it started this morning. Got up to 4 miles, which is the furthest I’ve been out on the roads for months. Progress is slow (as is the running, lol) but it is still progress!
Have a happy Sunday everyone

@ContraryMaryMary Great pictures! I wish I had something as scenic near me!
I attended my RIPPED class yesterday morning and walked a 5k afterwards. My goal today is 8-9 miles. I’m trying to decide where to go to run. I’m tired of running in my neighborhood.7 -
yesterday was an interesting day. Does anyone else "self talk" their entire run? I started out pretty slow so up front I thought well it's Sat am so I have time, why not do a longer run since I won't be setting any speed records. At some point I decided that another 10 mile run would be good (only about the 3rd time I had gone so far) so I made my mind up to do that. Of course it helped with that decision because I got turned around and went the wrong way for a while. Then I started thinking what if a runner had alzheimers' how far would they run because they could not remember the way home? random thoughts. About the time I was back at home and it was 10 miles I realized that if I ran for 5 minutes longer I would be at 2 hours which I have never done before so on I went. When I got to 2 hrs my mind said well bloody heck why not just go 11 total. So we ended there. And it was my longest run ever in time and distance at 11.02 but definitely slower than I had been before but happy to see my HR avg was 170 ish which I was also trying to manage with the slower pace.
But the day was not done yet and my self talk continued. I went to the barn and the fabulous bandit who had been very sore on the "non broken" leg on Friday seemed a little better and it also looked like the more he walked the better it got so I decided to go on a nice walk around the property for a while. Of course it was darkish by the time I was driving home and misting rain. But quite warm at 60 deg f.
On the way home I started thinking. What if I did another small run in order to get over 40K steps on my fitbit and set a new exercise record for me? I could also do a "half marathon" that way. So my self talk kept whispering to me and I got home instead of sitting down to dinner I laced up a different pair of shoes, put on my night lights and visor and went out for another run. LOL. I did end up feeling pretty good altho I was worried that doing so much in one day I might injure myself but it actually felt good to stretch out those muscles and the different shoes helped plus I changed my pace to go a little faster.
Anyway I have these self talks ALL THE TIME on my runs so I have decided that I must be a little nutz. Mostly at the end of my runs I seem to have to have something "exact" which means I do a little more.

I started this post yesterday but then had to jump on a 2-hour work conference (on a Saturday which is supposed to be day off) plus work a few hours so just now getting around to finishing it. Yesterday, it was 25F when I set out at 6:00 am but there was not any wind so it really wasn’t that cold. I got my half marathon in for the month. I told myself I wanted at least 10 miles but I felt good so I just kept going. I had a couple of friends run with me for the first five miles but they had time constraints and I was on my own after that which I really didn’t mind. I had my iPod in my pocket but didn’t even think about it until almost finished.
Love the shoe color @shanaber! Funny how they startle you when you catch a glimpse.
@skippygirlsmom – Ouch! I cringed just looking at those stiches. Glad the healing is going as planned.
What a beautiful place to run @ContraryMaryMary!
@marisap2010 – I’m also tired of running in my neighborhood and am here reading instead of out running because of that.
@SummerSkier – Busy day – you’re a good self-talk motivator!

High thin clouds, 20 degrees F, with a light breeze from the southeast. Earned my first ice beard of the year this morning. Other than two neighbors walking their dog, did not see another living thing; did hear a chickadee and a robin. The fun is gradually coming back into the run!
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)6 -
I was really busy on Friday and Saturday, so I didn’t check in at all, but on Friday I ran on the elliptical for half an hour. I’m excited to get back to outdoor running this week hopefully7
-
I somehow missed your post on the mud run @dreamer12151 ! That sounds awful, but so glad that you had people to cheer you on and get you moving.
@katharmonic That's a great way to look at our shoe size. I do sometimes get annoyed that there are limited choices of colors in that size. Glad you got in a nice run with your friend and have overcome your fear of getting off the ski lift. I remember when I first skied I had the same fear...that I would fall and then everyone behind me would trip over the top of me. LOL I hope you have fun today.
@ContraryMaryMary That sounds like a rough, but fun day. Love the pictures.

I ran 8.21 miles at one of the parks by the river today. Started out in a tshirt and light jacket, but I ended up ditching the jacket about 1/3 of the way through. I go on call later this week, so I am trying to get in a few more runs before then, since that time can be so unpredictable.

@summerskier, the self talk thing is very common in runners. It’s almost inevitable if you’re doing any kind of distance by yourself. Excellent work on pushing yourself.5

@ContraryMaryMary what a gorgeous and amazing place to run. Funny about the definition of what's "flat". I'm with you, that sounds hilly. Great job!
Great progress @Faebert. You're getting there!
@SummerSkier - wow great job on your longest distance and time! Yes I talk myself into stuff like that all the time. I think you have to. But you did an extra good job on yourself today.
@Tramboman great job getting out there and earning your ice beard! Yay for the fun in the run!
@marisap2010 nice run. Can't really relate to the running in a tshirt right now but looks lovely. Hope you'll have some time for runs before you go on call.

No run today, logging a 0 for completeness sake.
I did go skiing and had a great time. I took a lesson that was so much more involved than the lessons I've been getting at my little ski hill. And it was all adults which was nicer than being the only adult with a bunch of little kids. We practiced turns a lot and I struggled a little more today for some reason, I think it was the fresh snow being a bit slower and stickier. But it got better. After the lesson we ate some lunch and then I went out with my friends to a long beginner hill. It was much harder than what I'd done before and I fell quite a few times, but I had fun. One of my friends is a really good skier and ski racer and former ski instructor so he had a lot of tips for me. Most of which were well-received I was totally exhausted at the end of two more of those long runs and I'm definitely going to be sore tomorrow.8 -
@Faebert Yeah for 4 miles. You are right - progress is progress! You are doing great!
@marisap2010 I'm with you and want to find some interesting places to run when I am allowed. Running the some routes does get boring. Love the park you ran in today!
@SummerSkier Yeah for the PB's on distance and time. So....what was your final total? I talk to myself all the time too, but mostly trying to talk myself out of stopping before I should. LOL
Great running yesterday @Teresa502 !
@Tramboman Yeah for the ice beard, I think. It must have been good since you said the fun was coming back into the run. I am thrilled for you!
@katharmonic Glad you enjoyed skiing today! The more you do it, the better you will get. Sounds like you're doing great already!0 -
Today's plans called for lunch at my mom's, with my Aunt, and then a friend was to take me grocery shopping in the late afternoon. So, I walked 30 minutes, stopping at mom's. Walked a total of 30:31 minutes and 1.75 miles. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, so will probably stay home and walk on the treadmill.9

Wow @ContraryMaryMary what beautiful pictures, what a cool place.
You all are funny I had my eyes half closed when they cut off the cast, not sure I wanted to see. I was trying to take pictures and the tech took my phone and said I’ll get some good ones lol.
I’ve done some walking around the house with an iwalk. It basically is like having a crutch attached to your leg. It’s pretty comfortable to wear, my cousin who’s a physical therapist recommended it saying a runner is the best person because our core and leg muscles are so strong. I really hate using the scooter all around the house, can’t use my hands

I visited with my parents today and had lunch with them. After that had time to digest I headed to our local park which has a one-mile trail loop and did 5 loops. It was supposed to rain this afternoon but it’s held off so far today.5

You are doing so well in your recovery! Hope you sleep well tonight after all that activity!3 -
12 miles today. My goal was a half but I just didn't have it in me today. The last 4 miles were mostly walking.
About 83 miles. Hoping I can hit 100 for the month.11
