Mostly cloudy, mid teens F, and just a hint of a breeze from the northeast -- enough to blow the wood smoke and diesel fumes away, but not enough to affect running. The fun is coming back into the run.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)7 -
On days when motivation is lacking, usually if I can just get out the door and start running, I'm fine. Not today. First time out the door, I looked at my watch and realized we didn't have time to walk to the school, "get in the car now!". Dropped kid off, brought car home, tried again. Too cold, went back for a different jacket. Ok. Started running. Didn't even make it a kilometer before I finally looked up and realized that in addition to being cold and having every single step impeded by snow, I could also see AND taste the air, and it wasn't good. That was the last straw. I took the next turn and came back home. 2k total. A little later I got on the treadmill and did 2 more. But I was wearing the same clothing I already had on, and soon was too hot and couldn't get the last pair of leggings off without taking off the shoes. So I stopped, went upstairs for shorts and stalled a bit before going back to the treadmill for 4k more while watching videos of people making candy.
Total 8k oh yeah!11 -
I'm way behind on my goal for the month. Only about 13 miles so far. Fell down the depression hole. Starting to feel better now16

I think I probably know the answer to this, but do you think I should try a gentle run on the treadmill or give it a bit longer? I’m really frustrated at more time off, but I definitely don’t want to make things worse.
I agree with others who have already chimed in here. If it's swollen/bruised, give it some more time.0 -
35.6/70 miles
2/1: 6 miles
2/2: 4.1 miles
2/3: 7.1 miles
2/5: 1.7 miles
2/6: 10 miles
2/8: 4.5 miles
2/9: 2.2 miles
Unplanned short run yesterday with my daughter. My husband was feeling a little under the weather, so I took her out for C25k so she would stay on schedule and in the habit. They are to the point of the 20 min run now, so it's easier for me to do with them. The constant stopping and starting is kind of annoying in the earlier weeks once you are personally at a point where you don't need it. So, we did a loop she hadn't done in a while and ended up with 2.2 miles at about a 10:11 pace. Pretty good pace and a fair bit faster than she does with my husband. She says he runs slow, so I think he is driving their pace usually. I may need to try to take her out from time to time so she can actually run at a comfortable pace for her while he builds back up. Also, she likes to talk while we run, so it's a good way to get her to tell me what's going on with her life.8 -
@Faebert give it time. If it persists too long we will want to see an Xray of course. Hope it feels better soon.
Feb running challenge. Apparently Mother nature heard about this thread and is sending the deep FREEZE to Tx this week. WOW. It keeps getting worse and worse in the forecast. Now they are saying low of 12 deg F on Monday.... I bet before it's done it will be single digits.... Wrapping faucets. Stuffing cracks in window sills. Double covering plants (but sadly that probably won't help I might have to leave a radiant heater out for the nights of 17 and 12) It's not the first time it has gotten so cold here but it has been a few years. And it's not a clear sunny cold but change of precip cold... yuck.5 -
Thanks @quilteryoyo I appreciate the encouragement :-)
@142jmh what a beautiful dog
@faebert hope the ankle feels better soon

Thanks everyone! @skippygirlsmom good to see you and glad you’re healing ok. @Avidkeo - exciting! @SummerSkier brr!! Sounds very cold. We also have snow and ice everywhere so actually not a bad time to be forcibly rested! @polskagirl01 you worked so hard for that 8K! Great perseverance! @martaindale my girls were doing couch to 5K just before the last lockdown but it fell by the wayside. This current lockdown is a lot stricter and they feel more anxious about exercising outside even though it’s allowed. Hoping that by the summer things have eased and we can revive it. They are pushing out the odd treadmill run. But it would be so nice to be outside running altogether. Enjoy your runs with your daughter!
@142jmh @quilteryoyo @shanaber and all the dog owners, I have such envy. I would love love love a dog, but I’m not home enough for it to be fair. When I retire maybe!1 -
@142jmh awesome dog! They seem like a very cool breed and I do love giant dogs. We had a St. Bernard when I was a kid and that dog never wanted to come inside.
Great to hear you are moving along in the healing process @skippygirlsmom. I'm sure it seems long and boring but you'll feel like you are making progress when you start PT I bet.
Nice run with your daughter @martaindale. I'm sure it's great to see her make progress and spend that time together.
@Faebert hope your rest is just what your ankle needs. And that the weather will improve to get outside when you are ready to start up again.
@RunsOnEspresso sorry you've been struggling. Good to see you stop in. Glad you are starting to feel better. Hugs.

Debated running this morning but it was in the teens and I really needed to get to work early so decided to hope for the best and hit the gym after work. For the last few weeks I've been doing the run group's speedwork of the week on my own on Wednesdays on the treadmill, and now it feels like a routine so that's what I did. The workout this week was a ladder of 1-2-3-4-4-3-2-1 minute intervals. I did 90 second recovery between intervals for the first half and 60 second recovery for the second half. I kicked up the pace a little on the 1 and 2 minute intervals. That middle section was tough, and then it goes quickly on the homestretch.
I got my second dose of vaccine today. I was feeling fine until about about right now - starting to feel possibly head achey and tired. I will go to bed shortly and hopefully sleep it off.5 -
@polskagirl01 You did so good to take all of those things in stride and get the running in anyway. Knowing me, I would have probably just given up at some point. Do you know why the air quality was so bad?
@martaindale Sounds like your daughter is doing great and your running together is important bonding time. I hope DH starts feeling better soon.
@katharmonic The ladder workout always sounds brutal to me. Glad you got the second vaccine today. Hope you are feeling better in the morning.

I’m trying to catch up so sorry for some long overdue comments.
Obviously my mileage for February is zero.
Just a quick update, stitches came out last week and a new cast is on for the next 3 weeks. After that I start PT 3 days a week for at least 6 weeks to start. Besides that life is boring. I've been going into the office, which can be exhausting (my co worker picks me up), otherwise I've just been sitting at home.
@skippygirlsmom Glad to hear that the stitches have come out. I hope that it's one of the new Plastic Walking cast's that you can remove - allowing you to get a good soak in a Tub or Shower without the old double Plastic Garbage Bag trick to keep the cast dry. One of the ladies in our little club had a similar break to her ankle last winter ( ironically we were within 500m of the hospital ) and she is back to running and up to 10-15k depending on terrain and weekly distance all ready completed. The pin and screws stay in unless they start to cause severe discomfort after the bones have healed. PT is amazing, especially if the PT is a fellow runner/athlete who understands what your recovery goals are.
Feeling your Boredom - Pain on sitting at home. We have 3 people in our local shop/office.
Working from home and rotating in to the office every 3 to 6 work days depending on jobs/projects so if one person gets covid the other 2 are still operational. So if I am champion on a project that takes 3 days then everyone else stays home until my project is completed.
Missing the Human Social Face to Face contact but the hospitalization numbers prove that the social distancing is working to flatten the infection curves.2 -
Hey Everyone! Just joined MFP, and have been training (since Jan) to run a 4.2 mile run on April 24th,2021. Really looking forward to using these monthly threads as a way to keep me accountable, but also surround myself with some fellow runners!
I've always been an athlete, but have really never had the self-discipline to be consistent with running. I'd power out a mile, just to get it over with. Over the last month, I've slowly gotten to a point where I'm enjoying running and am trying to increase my distance, rather than just looking at speed and powering through a single mile.
Currently reading Running on Air, and trying to really master my breathing, as well as increase the distance I can run in each individual running session!
Edit: Feb goal is 60 miles, currently at 10 miles as of 02.10.21

2/8 2.00 miles 3.8 mph - 2 separate walks to my mom's and back
2/9 2.00 miles 3.6 mph - driveway laps
2/10 3.00 miles 3.7 mph - driveway laps, neighbor's field, to mom's and back
Monthly Total: 21.50/56 miles
It was a really nice afternoon - sunny and 65°F! Oh how I wish I could have gone for a run or been able to do yard work. Since neither of those are allowed, I opted for walks and reading. I took Tippy for our normal walk into the neighbor's field and then did driveway laps to make 2 miles (3.6 mph). I took a text book on birding outside and read it for a little over an hour. Then, I walked to mom's, spent some time with her and visited with the neighbor's who came over, and then walked home. Mom walked with me from her house to my turn around point and back, both when I got there and when I left. So, she walked almost a mile today. I didn't count those sections because they were slower than 3.0 mph. Anyway, the half mile to mom's I did at a 3.9 mph pace. The one back I did at 3.6mph.
Mom and I may have come close to becoming "jogger" on our first walk. When we turned to go back toward her house, there was a police car sitting at the top of the hill. An officer got out with a police dog and started walking the edges of the road. When he passed us I asked, "Are you looking for something?" Of course they were, but I wasn't sure how to ask. He said, "Yes. A gun. If you find one, call us." Ummm. Okay. Mom had seen an ambulance go down the road a couple of hours before. We haven't heard, but am now assuming someone got shot. We looked in the creek as we walked over the bridge, but saw nothing. At least they were looking for a gun and not a fugitive, or body.5 -

@skippygirlsmom : glad the stitches are out!
*So, my 2021 resolution is to hike/run all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not use Youtube vlogs to hike/run the world (and learn something about each country)?

@HonuNui Can't believe you're in the "CH" already! I've been thinking about which part of the country would be good for running, and decided I really really want to show you my city. So come to Beijing! I'll show you around and we can do all the classic run routes.5

Welcome @TheMinx89!
@quilteryoyo I’m so glad you’ve been able to get in so much walking!
@katharmonic Hope you feel better soon!
I ran 2.2 miles around the neighborhood last night. The weather forecast of course keeps changing for Saturday’s race. It looks like it is going to be rainy and in the high 40s. I’ve run in that before, so I feel a lot better than when they said 20 and snow.4 -

Had a couple of inches of snow overnight, so rather than dispute with the cars for right of way, had fun on the treadmill.

@HonuNui When I was in the AF, I had a 3 month class with a guy from Chad - it was a military exchange thing. He was so nice. I found it interesting that, at the time, if you joined their military (which I think was mandatory for some), you were basically in for life and had to serve whether you got paid or not. Also, he was going back to an arranged marriage. So different from our culture.
Thanks @marisap2010 ! I'm glad the forecast looks better for your run.
