I miss my BMs. I used to eat roughly 3500 calories a day—at LEAST half of which was fast food. And I work in an office setting with no real physical activity. Under these conditions I would have 1-2 productive BMs a day.
Now I’m averaging 1600 calories a day and getting a little walking in everyday. I have much less productive BMs maybe every 36-48 hours.
It might sound strange, but I miss the satisfaction of the way it used to be. Not that I would go back to that, but I still miss it. Anyone else?!

A fiber bar, some greek yogurt, and a cup of black coffee in the morning while wearing skinny or slim fit jeans is a fine recipe for a good and smooth BM for my lactose intolerant *kitten*5

You have less food going in now and less will be coming out.12

Haha. Definitely tmi but yes that used to be a very satisfying feeling. ☺️0

I average 40-50 grams of fiber a day--mostly from raw and cooked produce, and on ~1500 calories a day, I'm more regular than a commuter train!6
-
I eat around 1500 calories a day, 500 of them are usually 2 big bowls of raisin bran before bed. My morning BM's are pretty good and the best part is less wiping then with fast food.
Also, for some reason i feel this thread is going to be a guys only thread.2 -
what are you eating? you have to get enough fiber to make things work regularly.2
-
How many grams of fiber and fat are you eating per day, and how much water are you drinking?1
-
What are you eating? I eat a plant based diet therefore lots of fiber, and I poop at least once a day... fiber is only in plant foods so if your diet consists of a lot of meat and dairy that could explain why your BM's aren't very regular4
-
Why a guys only thread? Us li'l ol' ladies talk about this stuff, too. 😆
OP, the major key variables tend to be fiber (soluble and insoluble, but the former for volume and the latter for throughput, oversimplifying), fats (for throughput smoothness - grease that pipe), and hydration (enough, not crazy much).
Soluble fiber examples: Apples, bananas, oats, beans. Insoluble fiber examples: Most whole grains, veggies, bran.
Secondary or individualized factors can include exercise, adequate magnesium in diet, probiotic foods (and prebiotic foods, which the fiber sources will usually cover, but some do it better than others).
If you don't get much fiber now, increase gradually rather than all at once (unless you like risking gas, bloating, constipation, and who knows what else), and pay attention to the fats/hydration alongside. A couple of weeks or so ramp-up is probably going to work OK. (Gut microbiome needs time to adjust, basically.)10 -

I'd never argue otherwise, because you should know! 😉 I said that because of this, up-thread:nytrifisoul wrote: »I eat around 1500 calories a day, 500 of them are usually 2 big bowls of raisin bran before bed. My morning BM's are pretty good and the best part is less wiping then with fast food.

Me, I'm all for wide participation, except maybe threads about true differences in the plumbing inside men and women . . . and even then, I'd support input from (say) male gynecologists or female urologists, when it comes to the *specialized* body parts. 🤷♀️3 -
I am female and went through this for months, despite meeting MFP's fiber requirements. I added a daily probiotic and it helped. You might consider trying one if the if the addition of fiber, fat and fluids is still not working for you.
Just think it might be a stage we all go through as our body slows down processes and tries to extract as much nutrition as possible from our food when we are in a caloric deficit.2 -

Hate to break it to you but girls fart and poop!8 -
I use to have a male roommate and a female roommate, and she was horrified when he and I talked about bowel movements.0

To add to this. If the OP was getting at least half their calories from fast food there was most likely a bucket sized glass of soft drink included with each fast food meal. Has that fluid intake been replaced?1 -

Over half of 3500 calories daily from fast food and "satisfying" BMs? Guess the person leaving residue up the inner walls of the toilet bowl at the office has been identified.2 -
Try Metimucil or something like that. Easy way to get more fiber.1
-
I don't eat fast food often and have at least 3 BM's a day - my husbands thinks it strange I have to go so much LOL. Of course, everyone is different, whats normal for one person, wont be for the next...
OP its possibly more the inactivity causing the issue rather than the kind of food you're eating.1 -
I notice this primarily when I have super low carb days. So long as I have some form/combination of coffee, yogurt, Wasa crispbread, veggies, things go... rather smoothly. It's a delicate balance, I've just about got it down to a science. If not, Benefiber and a TALLLLL glass of water usually fixes things up within 24 hours.0

I drink a lot of water—which is nice. In fact, I’m learning that many times I thought I was hungry, I was just thirsty. I also eat good portions of greens and am more physically active. It’s not that I’m not having BMs, it’s that they are not what they used to be. I know why and I’m not concerned. I just have to get used to facebooking from my laptop instead of my phone now.1

My husband and I basically eat the same. He goes three times before 9am. If I go three times a week, it’s more than usual. Bowel habits vary.2

I have IBS of the slow variety, and thanks to its other effects can't eat all the leafy greens and cruciferous veggies that would give me fiber. So I take two stool softeners a day and fiber pills, and things are beginning to reach a better equilibrium. That's necessary even with nearly a gallon of water a day. My body just...doesn't. (And I have a note on my phone and both my partners know that if I am ever prescribed opiates it will necessitate an "aggressive bowel protocol" from day one.)
I try for a daily session in the Senate Chamber (to use the family's euphemism) but of course sometimes I get in there and there's a last-minute filibuster, and sometimes it's just a press release, and usually I have to work way harder than I think I should to just get a simple bill passed.

If I miss a day or 2....I take some magnesium for a couple days...0

As has been said, your body needs fiber to produce a really great BM. Start with broccoli and cauliflower. The great thing about bulk-forming veggies like this is that they are high in fiber yet low in calories. Add some Metamucil too, and increase your water intake. You might feel a bit bloated at first, but your body will “process”. Track your fiber and make sure you are getting enough. You’ll be measuring courics in no time!0

Not true exactly. A "healthy", I use that word loosely, low carb diet can have plenty of fiber. Look into Christopher Gardner's Dietfit study. Replacing whole grains and starches with low carb non starchy veggie can add more than enough fiber. Oh, no worries about TMI op. Pooping is a very common topic on the forums. 💩2 -

That is hilarious!!!

I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and usually get 30+ grams of fiber and still only go once every two or three days. I have always been that way. Im also a small person and eat about 1500 calories.1
