I am ready for a new month and a new start. I have lots of good habits that I want to keep and lots of new things that I want to add to my life.
My journey to health and fitness has been helped so much by having a group of supportive women by my side.
I hope this will be a good month for all of us. Together we can continue the journey to a better life.

My word for 2021 is "lighten up"--that applies both to the scale and to my behaviours and attitudes.

Hi All! Welcome to April, Barbie thank you for leading us into the next month.

As I mentioned in March ... I am on holiday for the first 11 days of April. Although I like my job, it's nice to have the break to do other things.
I'm not entirely sure what to do with myself.
We'll go cycling, of course ... and I might give some jogging a go, as well as some other exercise.
Plus I'll sleep.
And read.
And then we'll see.
Maybe a little bit of local touristy stuff.
Maybe some things on my 2021 List.
Maybe some photography.
Maybe some quiet relaxing.

good evening all I need help. I have arthritis in my hip so it's hard to work out but I do try. I have gained 20 lbs since the pandemic and really I'm sick of looking at myself, and hearing my doctor say you need to lose weight. so I'm giving this another chance. I was doing over 400 min a week now I barely do 150. can someone help me get started?21

Thanks as always Barbie.
I sure appreciate you. April 2018 was the first time I saw this group. Machka was giving updates on her husband as she was able to. I kept coming back because I was so worried about how this injury would affect the rest of her life. Within a week or so though, I got wrapped up in everyone. Kelly’s kids, Heather’s move, Allie’s Dad. Rita was travelling in the RV, Lisa was moving to their dream home or thinking about it. So many more.
My Son in law calls online friends, make believe friends. I used to agree with him until I met you all and ladies in another group I follow here.
Now I feel like you all are some of my dearest friends.

Standing burns more calories than sitting or lying
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/326309#Health-hazards-of-prolonged-sitting
"In the new investigation, corresponding study author Francisco J. Amaro-Gahete and colleagues calculated that the body expends 45 more kilocalories per 6-hour period when standing, compared with lying down or sitting.
The team found little significant difference in energy expenditure between lying and sitting."
"“If a person were to get up, take 10 steps, and sit down again, it appears that the effects of a sedentary lifestyle would be greatly reduced.”
Jonatan R. Ruiz, Ph.D."
So at work, I try to get up about once an hour to go to the kitchen for a water or black coffee, or to use the toilet, or to go climb some stairs. When we have meetings, I try to stand rather than sit. And i walk for an hour each lunch, even if it is just slowly through the shops.
Waiting for the bus, I stand rather than sitting and waiting.
At home, most evenings, I'm up and down doing housework projects during commercial breaks.
In my case, I started doing all this when I developed DVT in 2009 and found out I have a genetic predisposition to developing blood clots. I was told then that I need to get up once an hour and walk around or at the very least, stand for a while.
So that might be a place to start ... get up once and hour and take those 10 steps.

Okie – I was hired due to the federal funds, you are right. However, I’m hoping that my work will makes them want to keep me on. I was marked “meets expectations” for almost everything when I had my review. What didn’t I get? Well, it was stated that I had to be reminded to tuck in my shirt. Really, I see managers and other workers who don’t do this. So I’m hoping that they’re just going to have me do something else perhaps in addition to taking care of the carts. Well...we shall see. On another hand, if they let someone go, wouldn’t they have to pay unemployment? I honestly don’t know how that works, it’s been a LOOOONNNGGG time since I’ve been on unemployment.
Madlyncarr – first of all, welcome. Can you take a water aerobics class?
After ceramics stopped at Publix and got meat for Sunday and a few other things. Time at ceramics seems to go by so fast! Hopefully, they'll have more classes you can go to, maybe open up the other room for 5 more people?
Thanks barbie

If you were hired on a funding program, then you'll be let go when that program finishes. Not fired ... just let go because the program has come to an end.
I imagine they'll only keep you on if there's a position available.
And you could check your unemployment eligibility with whatever government branch handles it. As I recall, it usually depends on the number of weeks you worked and whether you were full or part time. But look into it.

Thanks Barbie for starting us off in the new month. I got my vaccination today, just the one as it is J&J. Don't have to go back for a second one. So far no side effects.
Matchka- enjoy your time off.
Katla- hope you get out to see Arrow soon.
I am hoping to get back to the YM in a couple of weeks. Can't believe it will be Easter on Sunday. I really miss the brass and big music numbers. Also son and DGD are gone so just DD and me to celebrate.
If I had a day to spend any way I wanted I would go horseback riding in the Black Hills of SD. I love the trail around Hat Mountain.
Everyone take care Sue in WA2 -

Sue—I am hoping to visit Arrow soon. I haven’t been able to see him since December. I had an injury that kept me away. I hope to talk to his owner soon.2

@trisH_7183 - Especially if I awaken with “monkey mind” in the middle of my usual sleeping time, I focus on a repeat phrase - my usual is “one, two, one, two, one, two…”. If I begin to get off track, I gently bring myself back to that phrase. I try to stay very still and not wiggle about. It seems to work for me most of the time. I think I just get bored and fall asleep. I like that phrase because I can visualize either the numbers or the words as I think them, which effectively keeps the chattering monkeys silent.
To fall asleep, daily exercise, avoiding late night eating, magnesium, all help. On the rare occasion that I have had a really stressful day and I am nerve-wracked, I take an antihistamine.

Welcome @madlyncarr Motion IS lotion, but it can be hard to get started. I like Machka’s 10 steps suggestion. Or find an activity that you love (swimming, dancing, walking). That and log every bite, lick or sip…
Tracey I agree. You all, my internet friends, are so very dear, and like the best possible sisters.
Squandered an hour of this gorgeous day reconciling our latest Soc Sec EOBs. Helps me understand the resentment many feel for the federal government’s well-intentioned but overly complicated, burdensome and even intrusive programs. With all those computers, you’d think the providers’ invoices, the supplemental carrier’s eobs and the Soc Sec EOBs would match up more easily/clearly. Hmph. Yet I’m grateful for Medicare, for being able to afford supplemental insurance and for quality healthcare.
Managed to invest over an hour picking up sticks/building up the burn pile, and another hour grooming Tumble. Returned to dog group the first time in a year. When the leader asked how I’d been, the word “Lonely” jumped out from my mouth. Tumble remembered and behaved herself, only barking/startling once at the new dog. The stroll chats with T must be making a difference, in the past I struggled to keep up with the group, today I was able to chat while walking and still had some energy left when group exercises concluded. Had hoped to get 9000 steps to beat January’s average, but that didn’t happen. More in tomorrow’s monthly results.
Was wanting something else to eat, was contemplating cookies, candy, etc. Realized I was a little short on protein. Bingo! Yoghurt with honey, walnuts and some bittersweet chocolate chips. V. satisfying.
Lighter, lovelies!

Singing Zoom today. They are going to make a bit of a concert out of it with some invited soloists. We have been asked to wear Easter bonnets, but I think I might have one ready beside me, in case I'm the only one! DH has a straw hat I can attach some flowers to.
Doing my salmon dish tonight. Fennel, leeks, crême fraiche. It's an adaptation of a Mary Berry recipe. The secret to my success is lemon zest and a touch of lemon juice, plus leeks instead of onions. I have a lot of naked lemons in my fridge.
I like to make the veg bit after lunch, so it's super quick and easy at dinner time.

Karen - Wonderful! The more colourful ones remind me of my grandmother who used to wear incredible hats, with big cabbage roses on, with a matching coat. I got my love of colour from her and she used to tell me all the exotic names for the colours. My grandfather used to say, she "stopped the traffic" when she walked into town. I used to try the hats on. They lived in big boxes on the top of the wardrobes.

Made only one of my three March goals which were to be lighter (gained three pounds), stick to my budget (we spent nearly three grand on sewer repairs) and be healthier. I would say I definitely feel better now than I did going into March. April goals will remain the same - be lighter, be healthier, stick to the budget!
Didn't sleep worth diddly last night, but didn't get a ton of exercise yesterday, either, and that's usually the culprit. My appointment for my first Moderna shot is this morning, and that's going to be a relief. I feel like Neo in The Matrix, bending over backward for more than a year trying to dodge bullets out of nowhere... I know I'm not alone in just being tired of the whole subject.
I'm also aware that the first shot doesn't provide the protection that getting the second one does... and the sample sizes are small, but there's some evidence that two weeks after, the Moderna first shot can provide 80 percent effectiveness from the virus and 90 percent effectiveness from hospitalization with a severe case of the virus. Having ANY resistance within a few weeks after the shot will be such a load off my mind--my state just lifted all mask mandates. Due to the heart thing and the SIBO thing, I wear two masks when I'm out anyway, and will continue to do so. Not sure for how long, just keeping an eye on the whole thing.
Time to get Corey's work coffee cup ready, and I think I'll get his truck started to warm up the engine. It's below freezing again this morning, so we're still not setting anything out for the garden. I have pruned all the roses, and they're thriving, putting out new leaves every day, and pruning everything else that doesn't move fast enough while I'm at it. Corey's happy with the fruit trees, all of which survived the winter, even after being girdled (the bark chewed through all the way around the trunk) by our friendly neighborhood gopher.
Later, y'all,
Happy Thursday, happy April, happy Easter, if you celebrate!
Love,
Lisa

Went for a walk late in the afternoon ... the river is a bit flooded from all the recent rain! But everything is so green!
Later ... dinner at a local pub with a pleasant surprise: it was parmy night! We haven't had a parma in ages! But I was thinking about them recently. My husband had a Caesar parma and I had a Mexican one. They were excellent! The pub is known for an old motor race that used to turn the corner just there so it is full of memorabilia which fascinated my husband.

Unemployment is possible. I don't know what the rules are surrounding the federal grant jobs (if they are any different, they may not be). As long as you meet the requirements, then you would be eligible. You can apply if they let you go and worst case scenario, they deny benefits.

Good morning all! Happy Thursday!
Karen VA- I was just going to suggest LaVerne Wimberley's outfits/hats to Heather! I just love the whole story behind it! Warmed my heart. I think my favorite of her hats is the White with the Navy trim/embellishments. Looks like something worn at Ascot in My Fair Lady.
Barbie- Thanks for bringing us into April! Also, it was interesting to see that I am not the only one that prefers a hard wooden dining room chair. lol Not sure why I am most comfortable in them...maybe because, as a child, whenever anyone came to visit, we all sat around the table to talk. We NEVER sat in the living room.
Michele- I would think if your employers are considering letting you go; it is probably due to the hiring initiative ending. So, don't spend much time stressing over it. IF you enjoy working, look for another job! Maybe in a place you would REALLY like working! How about an "artsy" type location, like your ceramic shop?! Feed your passion! A new adventure!
Kids arriving! Love and hugs to all! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)4 -
Regarding chairs ...
When I sit in a soft chair, it feels like everything scrunches up and I feel like I have difficulty breathing.
Too hard isn't good either because they make my sitbones sore.
But something that is firm without a lot of contours is ... just right.

Machka- My recliner loving hubby just got an office chair like the one that you pictured that you would like to have. They are quite pricey, but he found his on Marketplace for $30. He also needs the lumbar support.2

*Not to get too personal, but my DH just admitted that his favorite part of my body is my lower back. AFter three back surgeries and severe RA setting in early; I think he has "lower back envy". lol4
