Ah yes, I've experienced this a lot. I was at the mall w/ a bunch of people and they all got something from Haagan Daaz:
"Oh come on, just this once."
"Everyone's getting something!"
"Live a little."
Luckily, I am absolutely fine just saying "no" repeatedly. In fact, once you've said it like five times in two minutes, I think your resolve gets stronger. I also like to say things, "I'm saving my calories for X."0 -
re: cake pops
Cake pops are my favorite treat. They sell some at my Sam's Club with only 110 calories each! Nom!0 -
It does seem like alot of socializing revolve around food. The office birthday cakes, dinners with friends, it's a struggle trying to make a decision. So, if I know I'm going out, I plan my calories for the whole day first, so that I have enough for later. Unfortunately, you've got the food pushers, who sometimes make you feel bad. I would just laugh and joke about it, depending on who I'm with or whine. I actually have this boy in my office who loves teasing me about food and how I'll never lose weight. He'll put chocolates on my table or tease me with potato chips. It's annoying really. Imagine having Kinder Bueno in all its glory and only wrapped in see thru plastic staring at you...it's sheer torture. Luckily, in walks my fiancé, who'd promptly eat it up.
Anyway, it's tough at home too. Eating is a favorite Singaporean past time, and we've got 24 hour food outlets everywhere, which don't serve healthy foods really. Gosh, McDonald's is 24 hours here too! And you can even get it delivered. So, thing is, my family loves going out for supper, and this would be at any hour of the night, from 9-11pm usually. I feel like if I don't go, I'd be anti-social, so when I do, I just have unsweetened tea or water. If I run the risk of overshooting my calories with temptations at some restaurants, I'll hide in bed and " induce" sleep mode.0 -
if it's something like sweets i will usually take a little bite. if it's something i'm not interested in, nope.

I agree, it is such a challenge for me. I work in an office of people who love to bake and cook.... bringing their goodies in for all to share (I'm a former guilty party as well). I've found saying no repeatedly is exhausting and a losing battle for me. So I stay out of the kitchenette completely and keep healthy snacks in my office to keep me from using the vending machine or taking a slice/piece of whatever is being offered that day.Ok! I usually smile and thank whoever is offering me the offending food. In my office, it was a daily assault of Mr. Sticky's (incredible huge and delicious home baked sticky buns) or Panera bagels and sweatbreads, or Dunkin Donuts, or cakes from a local bakery. EVERYDAY. This is no exaggeration. I never commented that I wouldn't partake and if anyone asked if I had any yet, I would just say no and go on about my work. After a while, it became so common for me not to eat those foods that no one even noticed or asked me if I wanted any. Now, the brussel sprouts I would bring to work . . . . . thats another story.0 -
She ordered Smith Island Cake Pops (for people who don't know, Smith Island Cake is a locally made cake, that alternates 15 thin layers of cake and 15 layers of icing.) These were the small, round cakes on a lollipop stick. They had a coconut, red velvet, and a chocolate. They looked amazing. I mean, slap yo momma good. I wanted the coconut one SO BAD you don't even understand.
I usually order a Smith Island Cake once a summer to have as some sort of special treat when we are on the ESVA. I actually attempted to make one for my daughter's birthday cake one summer, didn't work out for me. They are absolutely delicious. Red Velvet is my favorite. Never had coconut. I feel your pain.0 -
Usually I can say no and no one minds unless I'm in a country southern kind of situation where I would be highly offending some one if I did not eat. If that's the case I will usually plan my calories before hand to allow for it, or I will take some have a few bites and make my husband eat the rest when no one's looking:)~0

My colleagues and closest friends and family pretty much know what I'm up to, so they kinda leave me alone. I do get annoyed when my mom says something like, "oh, I forgot, you can't have that." I feel like, 'no, Mom, I can have that. I can have anything I want to if I plan for it. I don't want it, that's the difference." One tip I've heard is to say, "Thanks, but I just ate." That works sometimes. I've had to use that one a couple of times. Sometimes I just take a bite of whatever it is. That usually shuts people up. And, sometimes I am just plain honest. The other day a colleague came in munching on a cookie and told me there were cookies in the lounge. I told her, "Sorry, I don't know the calorie count in those." Haha, we both laughed about that one, but she didn't ask again.0 -
I usually just go for the no thank you and get away from the food. If people are really insistent, I'll have a small bite, but I try very hard to not eat those extra snacks people try to force on me. I try to avoid the situation all together so I don't feel the urge to give in.0

When I am with people who know me and know that I have been working to lose weight, I usually say something like, it looks great but I've planned my calorie allotment for the day so not this time thanks. People usually respect that. If they are people that don't know that I'm on MFP, they can be forgiven for being pushy lol but no thanks still means no thanks.0

My mom is pretty bad about being an enabler like that... Used to, I had a bad tendency to just give in a have a little bit... which turned into a lot... which turned into a splurge... which turned into a whole weekend of bad eating. Now I try to focus on my goals, and not in one of those "keep an eye on the prize" kind of ways, but rather in a "You have a ___ mile run tomorrow morning. How will these mozzerella cheese sticks settle?" It keeps me pretty steady, although occasionally I still give in to tempting bad food.
I read the other day that the oldest woman in the world (121 years, somewhere in the Amazon) attributes her long life to an active lifestyle and only eating fruits, vegetables, and meats that are produced in/around her tribe area. I try to keep this in mind too, like "If I want to live forever, I need to stick to natural foods." It keeps my diet fairly clean.... except for when I crave chocolate! But chocolate occurs in nature, right???0 -

I just politely decline. Most of my friends know I watch what I eat and therefore do not tempt me. However I usually plan ahead and know if I am going to a party to work extra hard at the gym so I can eat a feew chips and salsa or a piece of chocolate guilt free.0 -

"I really can't, but it looks so great!!! You eat an extra one for me!"
"Can't! I've lost 35+ lbs!!! Got to keep at it!"

It doesn't apply just to dieting/calorie counting either...Food pushers try to get my hubby to eat peanuts or baked goods with nuts in them all the time and that's AFTER he declines saying he is allergic. He's not really allergic, he just doesn't like them, but they don't know that. He's over 30 and people still try their hardest to get him to try something...and will even go as far as asking HOW allergic he is?! WTH people...don't kill my husband.
I've gotten pretty good with saying "no thanks" but I also haven't had to deal with many food pushers other than my 2 year old....and nothing is more inviting than a soggy cracker she's trying to share with me....I find it easy to tell her no or that I'm full. On Sundays when we eat at the in-law's I just allow myself to have a tiny slice of dessert and watch my portions on the rest.
And I'm in on the Pink Team Jumping Jacks Just getting around to reading it so I'll start tomorrow and try to squeeze in more each day to make up for Monday.0 -
Alrighty folks, it's my turn today!
For alot of us, it's not just about the numbers that are shown on the scale. Often it's the hope that we'll finally be able to get into a particular dress that's hidden away from slimmer days of yore, and BREATHE, or to run a marathon for the whole length.

For me, the highest NSV is to be able to run the Standard Chartered marathon, AND have my photo plastered on their photo site. :P0 -

I turn the tables on people who try to tempt me and say "please don`t be mean - I am trying my best to lose weight" - They usually dont push again out of guilt!

Sometimes I just give in. We need to do that sometimes. But when it is my husband, I actually get quite angry because he knows that he is sabotaging me. After I get angry he usually doesn't do it for a while... but he is usually the little devil on my shoulder saying "just have one!"0 -

OMG! Usually I can just say no and everybody knows I'm on a diet...BUT before MFP I have a friend who loves to make brownies and even though I told her I couldn't eat them she persisted and persisted until I caved in and it completely threw me off my diet. After MFP I know I can eat what I want. I just have to not indulge too much in the bad foods and eat more healthy stuff. So if I do want to eat something and I have the calories for it then I would usually say yes. HOWEVER, the other day my boyfriend wanted to go to Dunkin' Donuts after we had just worked out at the gym. I said "HELL NO! I'm not going to waste all my exercise calories in one donut!!!" I won of course, but in my head I had that little voice saying, DONUT DONUT DONUT. :grumble:0 -

My first thought was to say "I want to fit into size whatever jeans..." but I don't have old jeans laying around to aim for, nor do I have any clue what size is attainable since my hips spread post-baby. Then I thought bikini, but I know I never have and likely never will be a bikini type person.
I guess the one thing I want most is to like what I see in the mirror.0 -
Monday: My primary strategy against temptation is to have the healthy alternative RIGHT THERE and easy, and to eat healthy snacks to avoid being hungry. (like I am riiiight now.... I didn't pack enough today because I'm out of my go-to lunch materials)
Then if I really want whatever they're offering, I can have a little. I usually find I'm better off tasting it and being done and working around the cals than working it up to be this magically awesome thing I can't have- thats when I binge.
Tuesday: Next summer, I want to be able to walk around sweaty in a skirt and not chafe so bad I cry. I really want to get my thighs under control so I don't have to wear these compression shorts under EVERYthing. But if it takes away my excuse for walking, compression shorts it is. For now.0
