@girlinkaz You look beautiful before and after.
@goal06082021 , @SammiGirl1321 , @CariTJR you all are making amazing progress! So impressive!
@goal06082021 ... my brother is an SLP and works with brain injury patients, people with difficulties swallowing and those relearning to speak in the Neuro Dept.. He loves it!6 -
@Spotteddingo Oh wow, a male SLP! Most men in the communication sciences and disorders field tend to go for audiology (it pays better, these things might be related, IDK). TBI/aphasia is SO interesting but there's just less opportunity to work with those patients in my particular geographic area.
@SammiGirl1321 good luck! I think you'll find a lot of kindred spirits in the field - like I was saying above, CSD is an overwhelmingly female discipline and there are a TON of people working in the space with personal connections to the kinds of services SLPs and audiologists provide, whether it be children on the spectrum or parents with TBIs. I live in Florida; the year I did my program, the national American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) convention was in Orlando - as a student I was able to get a decent discount on tickets, so I went and got to meet a bunch of my classmates and professors (it was an online program, we were all just words on a screen to each other otherwise). It was really neat! It's usually a late-November affair - if you get the opportunity to go during your program, do it! It's a great networking opportunity.4 -
@SammiGirl1321 2 of my sons have autism, 1 of them needed 3 years of intensive speech therapy because he was non verbal then when he did speak he had severe phonological disorder, both my boys also have sensory processing disorder so lots of sensory issues.6
-
Wow it seems a lot of us are connected in other ways than weighloss.
I am a special education teacher. The majority of my students have autism. I've worked for a school for children with autism for a number of years while I was going to school for teaching. Now I work for an agency as a SEIT (special education intinerant teacher) and work part-time for a local school district as a special education teacher.
@girlinkaz Wow! You look great! Your photos are very inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
@AlexandraFindsHerself1971 I hope your foot feels better soon.
@CariTJR Happy Birthday!!! Also congrats on the 13 stone club. I hope the house works out for you. That is really exciting!4 -
Hello everyone looking good and doing wonderful here
A little about me

Ultimate goal somewhere between 165 lbs and 180 lbs5 -
Thanks everyone! It’s certainly a journey and what I love about my journey this time around is it really is motivated by health and wanting to feel better rather than beauty. Sure, I notice that more people notice me when I am thinner but the thing that really motivates me is that I want to be able to hike mountains and go swimming and have adventures and not have to take a back seat to my own life because of my weight. We CAN do this!7

This week has been a strange week, normally I see a drop Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday but this week it happened on Tuesday and Wednesday then nothing today. I did a lot more walking yesterday and my legs are feeling it today so wonder if that's why there was no movement this morning but it's been a good week things are moving in the right direction and I'm definitely seeing and feeling the difference from when I started. Everyone here is doing so well and I love that you are all staying accountable which is definitely the way to stay on track.

Updates 5/22/2021:
I do not know how, but, I am way past my monthly goal on loss even with being on my period. I have been so cold on campus that I have been drinking more tea during the day, which keeps me full longer. I was initially worried that I was not eating, but, I checked my diary and I am still eating and meeting caloric goals. I am just eating at later times (sometimes dinner as late as 9 pm). To avoid eating dinner too late, I have set an alarm for 7 pm to stop what I am doing and go eat dinner before 8 or 9 pm. I have also been drinking a lot of the Goya coconut water with the little bits of pulp. I did notice that since I am completing my step goal in the morning before going to school, most days, I end up walking double my step goal. Plus, I have been unpacking and hauling boxes everywhere (weight-lifting). I think all that accounts for the dramatic loss!!
Bonus, I was able to wear 3 pairs of jeans from years ago and 2 skirts that I loved. When I saw myself in those jeans, I felt like I was myself from 5-6 years ago (if that makes sense). Also, I measured, and though I have not put them into MFP, I have lost ~1in from my hips, ~1in from each thigh, and ~1in from my waist.
Have to go for a MAG Mass casualty training this morning, so I will check back later.
Continued success everyone!!

@uyister that is simply amazing! Good job and thank you for sharing how you are doing it!2
-
@girlinkaz That is awesome!! I am so glad you found some things!! I totally understand the dancing around!! It is an amazing feeling and you need to celebrate it!! Love the pics!! Congrats again!!
@Spotteddingo Thank you!!! You are so welcome. It was very unexpected and worried me a little, that I had to think about it and look back, just in case I was doing something unhealthy to myself. I was glad that I wasn't actually starving myself. 😌
@jazzadesigns It does help if people not used to seeing you daily notice and comment. I think a lot of people now are not too sure of what comments may upset someone. Sometimes, if something is said in a conversation in relation to losing weight, I just chime in (I would not have done this previously) and give my experience and that usually starts people stating how they noticed my loss and asking what and how I did it. Regardless though, I think, taking progressive pics and making before and after collages of yourself (and for yourself) helps with this, so that even you can praise and encourage yourself!! You can also post those here, and I can assure you, you will get tons of compliments.
@goal06082021 Hey there!! Congrats on keeping up with logging. Keep me updated with the spicy cucumbers. I have never tried that. I would like to pickle or get freshly pickled jalapeños!! I have seen some fruit stands around me, but need to find a farmer's market close to me and check it out. I am hoping to find some spicy cheese (I don't really like cheese, but, tried a spicy one when I was in Nashville that I enjoyed, so hoping...). Congrats on maintaining for the week!!
@stortina Congrats on the loss. You are exactly right. Sometimes, we can start the conversation about weight loss and that prompts others to compliment us, ask suggestions, or give their own experiences (I like this the best because I can always learn more).
@kelMee2 Awesome job. Mini goals are a great way to keep up your motivation. Keep it up.
@SammiGirl1321 Awesome. I really think everyone on this journey should take progressive pics and look at them periodically. This way, you see the differences from when you started to where you are now. Also, don't forget your measurements. You may not see the big changes, but, those inches may be coming off anyway. I felt my waist (stomach) and thighs (outer) were getting bigger, but, they actually were getting smaller, just a little firmer. 😁 Congrats on the loss!! As for school and family, you can do it. It may require some creative balancing, but, it is doable especially with a great support system. Success!!
@pamelaromanczuk25 Welcome and congrats on the loss so far. You can do this!!
@Pamici9 Welcome!!
@CariTJR Woo-hoo!!! Congrats on reaching the '13 stone' club!! You had an awesome loss!!
@azalea4175 Awesome job on staying the course with your caloric and water goals. I used to eat back some of my exercise calories making sure to have at least 500 calories left, but, I stopped doing that a while back when I hit a plateau. I think eating the calories back or not depends on you and what your body needs. If you work out a lot, especially with weights/muscle training, you may need more calories, so depending on what your daily calorie is listed at, your body may need more and so you can eat back some of the extra exercise calories. If your daily caloric goal is already high enough to accommodate what you need even with working out, you may not need to eat more. Personally, I got tired of trying to figure out if the tracker was accurate or not, so I disabled the exercise calories and just try to stay at my designated goal with the idea that there is always a little extra since I workout daily (even if it is only 100 calories). With this in mind, I am also no longer bothered if I go over my calories one or two days a week because I felt hungrier (I just try to make sure it does not become a habit or check to see if I need to adjust my caloric goal due to increase in exercise).
@FadedNovelty Welcome back!! Congrats on the loss so far.
@AlexandraFindsHerself1971 Sorry about the pain. Hope you feel better soon.
@KeriA So happy to hear about your progress. Awesome goals. You've got this.
@yweight2020 Welcome and congrats on the loss to date!!
One more week to go ladies!! We can do this!!!!8 -
I spent my time I usually checking on here and getting caught up with logging preparing for our small beach trip. Usually when I lose a bit I jump up before losing more but I have held steady and hope to lose more soon. We plan to go out to eat for the 1st time tonight with friends if it is warm enough we will try for outside seating. They are at 50% capacity now anyway. I am skipping lunch so I should do fine for calories. We also plan to go for a walk with our friends afterwards.
I got in some of my planned exercise during the work week and will be getting some this weekend so not too bad. I will try to check in here again this week but will not be next Saturday. I will have lots of beach walking and swimming this coming long weekend.4 -

It's weigh in day for me. Yesterday my daughter had 2 birthday parties to go to. I was able to eat before going to the first one but couldn't do so before the second one. I had to eat something as my blood sugar was off and I was getting lightheaded in the sun. My options were limited so I made the best out of it. I knew my glucose level would be elevated this morning. To my surprise it was elevated much higher than normal but not close to what I had anticipated. I had my blood work done earlier in the week. I read the results and did some googling too. I still have to follow up with my doctor to see waht she has to say. If I am reading the results correctly I am pretty pleased.
Today we are doing a family day. We are planning to go to the beach for a little bit and have some fun.
Hope everyone has a lovely day!5 -
I decided to go check out a new natural area for my Sunday hike today. I should have guessed from the fact that this one had "ridge" in the name that there would be elevation changes, but in my defense, this is Florida. So, yeah, probably a good 15' elevation change from sea level, and the hiking trail is almost all squishy sand, especially on the inclines - talk about "walking is an endurance sport," heck dude it sure is. I don't think I would have been able to complete this hike six months ago - it's only a mile and change, but back in November my walking pace was a cool 30-35 minute mile and walking the ~1.3 mile mostly-flat loop at the park by the beach was exhausting. I swung by the grocery store and got some lunch from Panera Bread after my excursion today (the summer corn chowder's back on the menu already!), and still had energy to prep some enchiladas and Spanish rice for dinner this week when I got home.5

Back from Disney. Not too sure what my weight is truly after vacation as I didn’t get to step on the scale until yesterday after a heavy sodium meal Sat night. Things felt looser so who knows. I likely maintained which is all I ask for. Hard to travel with others but think my friend had a nice time as well. Ate the things I wanted without being too much. Logged what I could but otherwise just a guess for the day. Restful visit. Went to the pool to read a bit and stepped in twice. Felt comfortable with my bathing suit. Was glad to see shapes of all sizes. Did not eat as much as I thought I would on EPCOT day but nothing was a must have or else; enjoyed the items I did have of the festival foods.
No gym this week unless it’s raining. I need to work on my weeds in the backyard.
Happy Scale has my next goal as 215. That number seems weird. So close yet far away. The last time under 230 that I was aware of my weight was at 216. It was also my high for my first weight loss journey.
The real hard part of the journey seems to be starting. Friends and family judging their food choices; thinking I’m judging them. Try to give them the best advice – not berate themselves if they’ve had an ice cream (when they haven’t eaten much and need calories, etc). Trying to help find ways for themselves. My husband and I have discussed his pop habit so I’ve been proud of him switching to water for most of the days’ beverage and only have it when at a restaurant. I definitely understand it’s their journey they have to start at; so not judging they just assume I’m judging them. I don’t even give tips unless they bring it up or looking for suggestions.
@kelMee2 @JNettie73 @jazzadesigns Yup I’ve thought at least my husband would comment on my saggy butt jeans but no. No one’s said anything with my 25lbs off. They (mom, husband, 2 friends) know I’m doing it so it’s not a surprise is maybe why they don’t. Or they know it’s a long journey so they’re waiting until it’s more. Selfies don’t seem to show too much otherwise unless I have a comment on FB there’s no comments as I’m not shouting it out often on social media. I’d much rather keep quiet and wow them later once it’s realized. I’ll admit I don’t always notice on others too; maybe notice something is off but I need a comparison to really know.
@uyister AMAZING!!

This week I was talking with my wife about our weight loss progress (she is down 44 lbs and I am down 43) and without really thinking about it I said something like "It has been really hard but we are doing well". Her response was "Has it really been hard?"
That question really made me reassess how I think about weight loss. My default reaction is to think of weight loss as being challenging or unpleasant even when my experience has not really been that way. We made changes to our habits such as logging food and aiming for a calorie goal, measuring or weighing portions and swapping unhealthy habits (I'm looking at you morning bagel) for healthier choices. There have been points on the journey where it is difficult to stay the course and make good choices and there have been points where I have been frustrated with slow weight loss. But when looking at the overall changes made, I can't really say it has been really hard.
My new goal is to reframe how I think of weight loss. It is not by default hard, challenging, unpleasant, or negative but has in my experience been interesting, rewarding and even at times easy.
I also give a huge Thank You to all of the ladies in this group who constantly provide encouragement, support, honesty and motivation. Reading the success stories, challenges and helpful advice motivates me to stay the path and share my experience with others.14 -
@sandielewis2001 That’s a really good point! I’ve had that experience as well and have had to reframe the way I think about weight loss. Yes, there are hard and discouraging days but also, once I’ve built a habit of X (whether that’s eating eggs for breakfast, swapping out my snacks for veggies, exercising in the mornings, drinking lots of water, you name it) it stops being hard and starts being just part of life.
I’ve been thinking about that this week in particular as I’ve decided to take my UGW down from 170 (-52lbs from my SW and where I was 5 years ago) to 155 (healthy BMI and where I was 8 years ago). When I first started this journey, losing 50 lbs seemed nearly impossible and now, even though I haven’t gotten there yet, I can see how it’s not only possible but definitely going to happen. And with my drop in UGW, the “finish line” gets that much farther away but, as I remind myself that there is no finish line and it’s all about sustainable changes, reframing this journey from “really hard” to “sometimes hard and sometimes easy” has been a game changer.10 -
@goal06082021 Congrats on the hike. That is fantastic that you were able to completely when a few months ago you would have struggled. What a great NSV. I am happy for you!
@sarah12277 Sounds like you had a great vacation! I keep my new lifestyle quiet too. I've only told a few friends and of course my husband and daughter also know. I have found over the years that the more people know the more they make comments. I ended up getting upset because some of those comments, without meaning to be, come off as rude, judgmental and hurtful rather than supportive. For example, at a family holiday gathering I was eating a piece of cake and someone said to me "I thought you were dieting. Should you be eating that? That is some diet you are on if you are eating that.". This time around I picked my support team very carefully.
@sandielewis2001 I love that your wife said that and love your new goal of reframing how you view weight loss. Your post has me thinking about my own journey. I found it tedious when I first restarted my journey. It certainly is something I work very hard at daily. But I am noticing now that I am in a routine it just seems natural for me. I am so happy to be on this journey.
@girlinkaz I have not picked my UGW yet. I have a rough idea what ballpark I would like to be in. But at this point in time I cannot pinpoint that. For me, I have decided to work on getting into Onderland then reassessing. Ultimately it will depend on how my health is - combined with how I feel and look.5 -
Well, my weight is up a pound but I'm down one inch on thighs, one on biceps, and one on waist, bust stayed the same, and hips went up one inch...I think because the sagging belly thing is shifting downward markedly. It's now all below my waist.
So change is good. And I got two different patterns and between them I am going to see if I can make myself a more comfortable breast support garment. I've made corsets, so I guarantee I can make a working bra. Even if crossing it with short Regency corded stays seems very attractive.5 -
Love all the words of wisdom . Thank you.I start my day reading all your posts
Went on a two hour walk yesterday and found a lovely trail through a wooded area. Can’t quite describe how peaceful I feel walking in the woods or near water. Anyone else have that experience too?Our lockdown in Ottawa is scheduled to be lifted June 2.
Hope to get some camping in as soon as provincial parks open . Back to work June 29.
Been a good break❤️9 -

@sandielewis2001 you and your wife are making great progress! I have been thinking about what you wrote about it being very hard. For me, it as been work but I know that this will be what things will look like for me for the rest of my life. I really like your thoughts about reframing thinking about how we talk to ourselves or thoughts that are less positive. I will make a concerted effort to work on my negative self talk. Thank you!
@JNettie73 You are doing great! Very impressive!
@kelMee2 you are moving right along and I am going to try to match you cycling today. You are inspiring.

@Spotteddingo I was moving along, still moving but the scale hasn't budged, in fact it went up 1lb at the weekend and hasn't come back down so I have no idea what's going on. Still pushing on though and hopefully it will disappear again and I'll see a drop of some kind, fingers crossed.3

Run or Row 6 days a week: 19/22

Success, Struggles and Insights: Ran nearly while on vacation, even in the Houston heat and torrential rain! Also, while my Saturday weigh-ins don't reflect it, my weight shot up mid week between 5/9 and 5/14 to a high of 164.8! But it came back down on its own, without me doing anything different, other than going on vacation. Hit a new low on 5/19 of 158.2. Clearly stress was causing the weight gain. My trip out to Houston was to visit my aging mother. She is in late stage dementia and my sister (her primary caregiver) was worried she might pass before my visit. She had stopped eating. I was really afraid of her dying while I was there and more afraid that I wouldn't get to see her at all. Add to this, my oldest daughter broke her leg roller skating and I was very worried about her. Then of course there is the added stress of just working really hard at work so I could leave my clients in good shape before I went on PTO.
My mother rallied when I arrived, and by the time I left Houston, she was well hydrated and eager to eat again. So, while I said goodbye as though it might be the last time I see her, I may well be able to squeeze in one or two more visits still. She still recognizes me and the way her face lit up every time I walked in the room was so heartening. And my daughters leg will heal without surgery, so while it is painful for her, she is going to be okay.
Lessons learned - stress causes weight gain. When the stress resolves, the weight comes off. I need to remind myself of this the next time I gain weight unexpectedly, and ask myself: Is it too many calories, or too much stress?
I'm maintaining well this month, but I had set my goal to drop another 5 or 10 pounds. It's funny, when I set my goal to maintain I seem to lose weight very slowly. When I set my goal to lose, I seem to maintain.11 -
@speyerj : I've been noticing a similar tendency. What I'm doing is just trying to work on problematic behaviors around food, and change routines especially in the evening to eliminate the "I'm just going to sit here and nibble" time, and bit by bit, as my body can tolerate it, increase my activity levels so that I'm moving more every week. The scale will eventually move downward if I keep my calories in order, and until then, working out makes me feel good, so I'll keep it up.4
-
Happy to see you back here @speyerj. I am sorry to hear about your mom and daughter. Hugs.3
-
I have been logging my food every day for a week now and maintaining a loss. My starting weight in April was 305 and today the scale said 298. I need to work on being active and doing other activities other than gardening. Yesterday I had a headache and my legs have been sore from all the gardening I have been doing. My goal for this week is to stay away from unhealthy foods, work on eliminating sugar, log my water and food intake and incorporate walking into a routine. I am so happy to have recently found this app to help me lose weight. I have been obese for far too long and it feels good to have some weight loss goals.8
-
@joryrheanne welcome to the group, I don't think I've seen you post in here before! You've already made excellent progress. If you're still in the process of building the habit of logging your food, I would start by focusing on that piece of it and getting that to be second nature before you tackle the separate task of overhauling your diet. It's easy to do too much, too soon, and burn yourself out. This isn't temporary, you're committing to a new way of living your life, so it is okay and in fact preferable to make those changes piecemeal rather than blowing up your entire routine and starting over from scratch.6
-
@goal06082021 thank you for the welcome and encouragement! I have started decreasing my sugar intake by switching up a Timmies double double to a regular and will eventually go to a 1 cream instead. I believe I can limit my intake of unhealthy foods while treating myself once a week. It makes it hard when family are eating junk food in front of you. Yesterday I went out with my daughter so that she could get ice cream. Happy Wednesday!2
-
@joryheanne smiled when I saw your double double and Timmies👍 another Canadian girl😀2
