Slow 2.2 mile run. Stressful day in work and took a short break from my screen to get some fresh air/let off some steam.
Race day tomorrow. Slightly nervous about getting lost during the Ultra but I've downloaded the route to my Garmin watch and we'll be given a map. Had a masterclass from my Dad on how to read a map properly and bought a proper map compass, as the one I had was no good 😊
June cumulative:
37.9/120 miles
4,066,/12,000 feet of elevation13 -
Busy day today! Volunteered for Parkrun, then had a coffee with a couple of the runners. Then did 45min easy run. It was easy haha.
When I got home I took the kids to the pools for an hour. That was exhausting haha.
Then some baking and some study - I'm doing some self directed study to help improve positioning etc for the patients. This is for my students. I'm actually enjoying it. And I have to say medical books from the 60s are very... In your face lol
Tomorrow is a rest day. Looking forward to that lol9 -

Cloudy, mid 60s F, humid (again) with a tiny breeze from the south. Made a conscious effort to go a bit slower in hopes of getting the full 7k in.

Happy to say that I finished up my challenge this morning. 500 km in 12 weeks. It pushed me way past my comfort zone and honestly, there were days I was not sure I'd finish in time. But, I kept telling myself it wasn't over until it was over and to keep pressing on.

Not so long run today, no run yesterday. Not my best week and the month is not looking all that promising to get to my (arbitrary) 100-mile goal. It's ok. Other things are taking some priority right now but I need to just not quit altogether. Steady on! Hopefully big hike tomorrow and I'll report back on Monday.
Which, speaking of hikes, I think @teresa502 is off on her grand canyon adventure. Wishing her luck and can't wait to hear all about that!8 -
@sweetdaisy13 Good luck on your race! Can't wait to hear all about it!
@pfeiferlindsey Congrats on reaching your goal!!!
I was also thinking of @Teresa502 and hoping her hike is going well.
Rest day for me today. Hopefully I will be able to drag myself out of bed early enough to beat the heat tomorrow. The low is only supposed to be 75°F though, so there really won't be any beating the heat until fall.6 -
@penguinmama87 - you'll have to post again once those babies are bigger and producing giant pumpkins and other yummy veggies. Have you grown jalapeños before? They are so much better than store bought (true for most all fruit and veggies) and you can adjust how hot they are by when you pick them (dark red is the hottest).
@Scott6255 - If those pumpkins get water where they are they may do fine in the Texas heat. You could also put a mesh screen over them to provide a bit of shade for them.
@sweetdaisy13 - Hope the ultra is going well! Have fun with it! Looking forward to your race report!
@avidkeo - so why medical books from the 60's? Surely you have ones that are more current (I hope!)
@pfeiferlindsey - Congratulations on completing your challenge! It really is amazing what we can do even when we can't imagine being able to!
@katharmonic - enjoy your hike!
I was thinking about @Teresa502 too and I hope she was prepared for the dry heat! We are having a heatwave here and it is sitting over CA, NV and AZ. There are excessive heat warnings and very low humidity (less than 10%). Hopefully they will do most of their hiking in the early morning hours before it gets too bad.
So on Thursday dh informed me that the bug (fumigation) people were coming back to treat the garage and attic with something that will help to keep the bugs from returning. It meant we had to move everything down and away from the walls in the garage. We have built high, heavy duty, shelves for storing Christmas stuff, old books, dd's childhood things, etc., etc.. He found an especially heavy trunk to move, got it half way down then needed me to help. I must not have been in place and ended up putting way too much load on my right arm. It hurt SO bad but I didn't drop the box, although I probably should have. It hurt most of the afternoon and evening and I thought I probably just strained it. Got up yesterday to find a huge dark purple bruise at the base of my bicep. I sent a picture to dd and she thinks I may have torn or ruptured one of the tendons and I should see the doctor asap in case surgery is required... ugh! The earliest I can get in to see my doctor is the end of the month so instead I opted for a video call with the nurse practitioner on Monday morning. I am hoping she can refer me to ortho next week. I tried to go for a run yesterday anyways and my arm hurt with each swing, so no run. I may try for a walk today and keeping my arm still. On the bright side it will give my hamstring more rest!8 -

I know you don’t want to hear this but if it is a ruptured tendon I would not wait until Monday but go to the ER. What you don’t want is for the tendon to retract because it becomes a much larger deal. Hoping it isn’t serious!5 -
Husband still not running, so we took a walk together at dawn. Heat already brutal. Last night it was absolutely disgusting, heat index was over 100 after sundown and the humidity was just sopping wet. It rained and the temp went UP. @kgirlhart Are you getting this? You all usually get our weather but a day earlier.
So I unburied the dreadmill at my mom’s house. It’s a certified antique which hasn’t been touched since my dad died twelve years ago, and not much even then. It was being used to sort laundry. But it works, although the belt is a little slippy. It’s not as well-designed as a newer model and is tricky to run on since you can’t really swing your arms freely without being worried about hitting your hands on the bars. The only way to get off is to leap onto the side rails. But it goes up to 11 mph, has a deadman’s switch, an incline setting, and even a rudimentary intervals program which only does 30 minutes at a time, with intervals of 3 minutes. I got in 30 minutes and then realized my borrowed watch (I took back the Apple watch I gave my mom since she never figured out how to use it) wasn’t syncing heart rate data. So I fiddled with settings and did another 9 minutes to figure out if the heart rate was working. All in all I’m satisfied, roughly the equivalent of a 5k with warm up and cool down.10 -
Sorry all! I was on vacation with little to no internet access. Loved it! LOL
@shanaber The big fire is east of Phoenix. We went to the White Mountains this week and usually there's two main ways to go. We couldn't go one way because it was closed due to the fire. Then when we got home we found out a few hours after we went through the other route was down to ONE lane. Not one lane each way but just one lane total. We had Shadow with us so we were glad we missed that one. Sitting and waiting for the lane to change directions sucks as humans but I'd feel bad having a dog sit through that.
Going through the White Mountains and looking at the devastation and recovery of a 2011 wildfire is a reminder that we need to be better because it takes a looooooong time for the earth to heal. It's looking like this year isn't going to be any better than last year for fires. We really need some rain but I read they are expecting a pretty dry monsoon season. Joy.
Of course we come back the week that will have 117 degree highs and overnight lows in the high 80s. Yay. We went from 90s to high triple digits quickly this year. No gradual increase. And it's been so freaking dry. I bought a humidifier for while we sleep and it's not helping much.
Speedwork thoughts: Newbies don't need to focus on speed work. You will get faster naturally with training. Once you've been doing it for a while then start with simple fartleks.
28 miles out of a hopeful 100. A little behind but had 4 days off.6 -

I have a city half marathon next week and most of my running lately has been on trails, so I did a 22k route around the city. I wasn't pushing the pace, just trying to cover the distance, but road running must really be different from trail because all sorts of stuff hurts now 😆. I did my stretches and rolling.
Then we took the kids to a nearby town for a model train show at a mining museum, climbed a tower, ran a kilometer to the nearest train station to be there in time to see the train, walked around a town square and ate at a restaurant(!!!) - well, outside the restaurant, on the square. There was a stage set up and wind bands were playing concerts. It was great.
June Goal 100 miles (stretch goal 184k)

Upcoming races:

ETA: Also there's a "cross-country" style race in July, and I'm about 90% sure I'm bumping up from the 20k (which I already ran, but for "trash pickup" instead of the canceled race) to the 30k.10 -

Nice variable weather today: sunny the first k; rained for kilometers 2 and 3; cloudy for 4; and sunny again for 5, 6, and 7.
After pondering why my legs haven't seemed normal, finally remembered that it takes me about 2 weeks to recover from race pace effort. So I'm happy again.

@shanaber I hope you can get your bicep injury looked at soon and start to heal.
Well no long run (or any run) this weekend. Out of nowhere, my back seized up on me as I bent over to put the flyswatter back under the sink.
I could barely walk yesterday, but slightly better today. That officially ends my streak of running every other day since Christmas last year. But the good news is is isn't because of a running injury. The bad news is I feel like I'm an 80 year old man that needs a cane to walk to the bathroom 😢
But hoping the muscles relax and I can get back to running in the next few days.

June Goal: 116 Miles
6/1: 6.10 miles
6/2: 5.11 miles
6/3: 5.35 miles
6/6: 11.02 miles
6/8: 3.12 miles
6/9: 6.22 miles
6/10: 6.55 miles
6/13: 11.03 miles
53.49/100 miles completed for June
I got out and ran 11 miles this morning. They were slow, but I wasn't trying to be fast. It was already hot and humid at 7:50 this morning. I wish I could make myself get up earlier on Sundays but I just can't seem to do it. Honestly it wasn't much cooler at 6:50 than it was at 7:50, but it was more humid earlier. It was 75°F feels like 76°with 86% humidity and 71° dew point at the start. When I finished up it was 84°F feels like 89° the humidity was down to 68% but the dew point was 72°.
But despite the heat I had a great run. I just went slow and didn't worry about my pace. I was able to just kind of zone out and run.
@rheddmobile We had heat indexes over 100 all last week and it has been so humid. We did finally get a break from the rain and floods and now the mosquitos are ridiculous.
@scotty6255 I hope your back is better soon!
@shanaber I hope the bicept isn't too serious and feels better soon.
