Cloudy, upper 60s F, humid, and no wind today. Wasn't much fun in the run today, so cut it off at 6k. Don't want to take a chance on doing something dumb before next week's actual race.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

8.2 mile trail run, with 957 feet of Elevation. Legs not quite 100% after last Sunday's ultra marathon, but getting there. Two toenails are slightly discoloured but doesn't look like I'm going to lose them.
June cumulative:
89.4/120 miles
10,938/12,000 feet of Elevation7 -
@katharmonic Sounds like a very grueling hike last weekend! When I read that the first peak was the highest, I thought that was great, because the rest of the hike would be easier. Guess I was totally wrong on that assumption. Love the picture. I can't imagine hiking that long, let alone on difficult trails.
@Scott6255 Great running and glad your back is feeling better. It's amazing how a sneeze can make things hurt so bad. I know I often have to hold onto something when I sneeze so that I don't jerk my back too much.
@penguinmama87 You are doing great and so glad you are pumped!
Great progress and attitude @WhatMeRunning !
@rheddmobile Yeah. I once asked the tech about my stress test and was told, "I can't tell you what the results are, but if I saw something serious, I would not let you leave the building." Glad you had a good birthday and PR'd that hill. Those longer, slow elevation increases are a killer for me. You did great. Still hoping things continue to improve for you, your DH, and your mom.
4 -
@yirara Sorry the Garmin/running gods seem to be against you lately. Hope you get that straightened out.
@Scott6255 Glad the PF pain went away. Hope it stays that way.
Great news about your DH @rheddmobile !
Looks like I'm finally caught up on all the posts. You guys are doing great, as always. Such an inspiration.4 -
So good to hear from you @quilteryoyo! We've been missing you!!
14 tough miles this morning. Even tho it was cooler and less humid than the last several weeks, it felt oppressively hot and soupy running. Had to take 3 walking breaks. Calves felt really tight, but I'm sure that was due to over doing it with calf raises the other day. Just glad to get in a long run this week.
Hope all you dads have a great Father's Day tomorrow!!
7 -
Thanks @Scott6255 . Great job on the long run. I think the weather affects us more some days than it does others.1
-
Friends leaving people on r2r hikes is not unusual. I've heard so many stories. It's still a *kitten* thing to do though.3
-
Thanks for all the kind comments on my GC hike. We saw a ranger on our last day who knew our guide and pulled her aside to let her know that Bob was ok according to the paramedics who checked him out. I think he was just undertrained and bit off more than he could chew. @RunsOnEspresso - that's exactly what our guide said. It happens quite frequently. Still blows my mind!
@quilteryoyo - are you working at the ballpark this summer? I heard our friend Bob Townsend mention that he was the other day and I immediately thought of you!
This morning I ran a local 5k. My finish time was really, really slow. I ran with a friend coming back from an injury so that I could encourage her. She was quite proud that she didn't have to walk any of it. After the run, a friend and I went bike riding for 24 miles. Beautiful summer day here. I loved riding by all the gardens and fields and just smelling summer.
Happy Father's Day to all the dads here and big hugs to those of you who no longer have your dad around. I know it can be a tough day.9 -
I'm just going to paste this here from my Strava post, and move on with my life...
Wizz Air Katowice Half Marathon Disaster recap:Something went wrong with the course, and as a result, the police shut the whole thing down, stopping wave 1 runners at km 3. Only the very front of the race got through. They informed everyone else it was canceled. I got there in time to collect the medal/water/sandwich, wander around not sure what to do, and then go back to my car, and apparently I didn't stop my watch.
Then they posted on Facebook that the police would recheck the course around 10pm and it was possible anyone who wanted to could have until 1am to run the race. So I moved the car closer, and then sat around at the start with a bunch of other people until I figured that the organizers and police were probably off watching the soccer match somewhere and weren't going to tell us anything, and at almost 11 pm, I wouldn't finish by 1 and would likely be running alone anyway... and I no longer even wanted to. So I drove home (almost an hour drive). I'm beyond frustrated, disappointed and mad.
I've already emailed the organizers of next week's 10k I'm signed up for (in another town), to see if I can switch to their half marathon distance instead.11 -
@Teresa502 It has been a great day today. Glad you were able to get out and enjoy it. I am not working at the ballpark this year. I decided I had too much going on and something had to give. That was it. I may attend a game or two as a spectator.
@polskagirl01 Sorry to hear about your HM. Did you ever find out what went wrong? I hope you are able to switch to the HM next week. Fingers crossed.1 -
Wow @polskagirl01. that really sucks! Hope you get that HM next weekend!0
-
@polskagirl01 what on earth? I'm trying to imagine what went on there. I can see some incident causing them to shut down the course (once they delayed a race I was in due to a shooting near the course), but why say people can run it later and then nothing? That's just bizarre. I'm sorry you didn't get to run and you waited all that time.
I didn't run today, but my back is feeling a lot better. I managed to get the kayak down to the dock and go out on the lake for 2 hours. I was determined to get to the point where this lake becomes a Y and go around it. I'm staying on the left arm of that imaginary Y and I've walked down it to find the point but it was too far. Turns out it's also too far to kayak. I went out (against the current, paddling the whole time) a little over an hour and realized I was tiring myself out and better turn back. I was glad that the way back was helped by going with the current because it was still long. But it was beautiful out there and I was happy to have been able to get out in it. I also walked Stella 4 miles this morning so we are both pretty tired tonight.8 -
Oh @polskagirl01 sooo sorry to hear that about your HM! What could have possibly caused them to close the course? Then not open it back up until after 11pm? That's just nuts!3

Police cited something about course security. So it was marked incorrectly somewhere or there were insufficient volunteers, or maybe the police had something against the organizers and wanted to stick it to them/show their power. I don't know if they ever reopened the course after I left. At 11 pm runners were discussing just going on their own.4 -
That's just crazy @polskagirl01 ! Have you heard about next week's race yet?
@katharmonic Glad your back is ok and that you got to kayak. Also glad you know yourself well enough to know when to turn back. Enjoy the rest of your weekend away.1 -

It looks like I am going to have to dial back on the workouts and stick to easy effort for this next week.
I noticed a quad feeling a little strained during my sprint intervals Friday. Negligible on the pain scale just noticably tender and not 100%.
I rested it the rest of Friday and all day yesterday (scheduled rest day) and felt it was good enough to start my long run today and see how it went. The plan was to keep it all at easy effort for 120 minutes and see if the quad ever complained.
While I ultimately called my long run short it wasn't because the quad started acting up. My quad felt OK the entire time. But about 50 or so minutes into the run some wasp/hornet thing started chasing me. This continued for about 1/4 mile with no let up. After passing two other runners it disappeared, perhaps to their misfortune.
When I looked at my watch too see how far over my HR had gone it showed me in Zone 5. I had not yet felt anything off with the quad and was feeling happy about that.
Once I tried running again in Z2 I felt I was pushing my luck on that quad so I walked the remaining time. By the end of the walk I was just starting to notice it feeling tender.
So I can run, but need to give it a little time and definitely not push it.7 -

@WhatMeRunning That's so weird about the wasp chasing you so far. I hope the quad gets better quick - I know that frustration.
Due to last night's fiasco, I haven't reached my 40k for the week yet... went out for 6k before church, and am waiting for it to cool down a bit, then plan to take my kid to the forest for another 7.
Sorry to keep going on about this, butin the race organizers' official statement today [in which they subtly blamed everyone but themselves], it appears they think we all "resigned" from the race when we left, after they announced from their own stage that the race was canceled. This is perhaps even more infuriating than what happened last night. I couldn't make this stuff up, if I tried! BUT, having made around 3,000 runners mad, their Facebook comment sections sure are entertaining at the moment.8 -
How disappointing and frustrating @polskagirl01! Hope you at least get a refund and can get transferred up to the HM next weekend.
Smart to cut back now @WhatMeRunning before your injury gets worse. Hopefully catching it early will speed up your healing time.
Thanks for the explanation on "pvcs" @rheddmobile. I kept meaning to google but never did get around to it. Glad you're hubby is doing better. Hope things are less stressful for you and your family soon.
I ran 8 miles this morning. I was in Zones 3 (18%), Zone 4 (31%), and Zone 5 (51%) with 911 feet elevation gain. Slept in and didn't start until 6:30 am. Saw horses, cows, a sand crane, and 2 ducks. No cars, trucks or humans out and about yet.8 -

@polskagirl01 oh no, never heard of a race being that badly organised and to re-open it at 11pm just sounds like madness! Hopefully you are able to run a HM next week instead.
@WhatMeRunning hope that your quad niggle doesn't turn into anything more serious. But looks like you are being sensible and not putting too much pressure on it.

Today's run was a hot 10 miles. I need to start getting out earlier on Sundays but it is so hard to get up and get going on the weekends.
It was hot already when I started out at 76°F at 7:50 am. And by the end of the run it was 84°F feels like 88°. I spent my time trying to run in the shade so there was lots of crisscrossing from one side of the road to another. And I only saw one sprinkler, but there was someone out in the yard so I didn't run through it. Luckily when I got home my husband was watering the garden so I was able to stand in our sprinkler and really cool off.
When I first headed out I saw two police officers pull up to a house on the corner. They got out and were looking around the yard. Then a few blocks later I saw them again and they were talking to two sketchy looking people. Other than that it was an uneventful run. It was just hot and I was glad to get home. But after I cooled down I was glad I ran.
@katharmonic Your weekend at the lake cabin sounds great.
@whatmerunning That wasp sounds crazy! I hope a little extra rest is all the quad needs.
@teresa502 I 'm glad to hear that Bob is most likely ok. Sounds like you had a great 5K and a lovely bike ride.
@polskagirl01 That is just unbelievable. I can't imagine such a disorganized race. I hope you are able to change to the half next week.
@quilteryoyo. I'm thinking about you today. This is also my first Father's day without my dad and it's been kind of hard.
Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there! I hope you are having a good day.

Had a lovely time in the woods with my son. 7.5k mostly at a walk, but with some run intervals (run ahead, pause/wait, repeat) until it got too dark and he was getting scared when he couldn't see me. This time we were being hunted by imaginary dinosaurs, but he found some stick "guns" along the trail to protect us. I tried to time it so it wouldn't be as hot out, but then had to use my phone's flashlight for the last kilometer, oops.pretty sunsetHappy Father's day to the Dads, and hugs to everyone who needs one today.10
-
@WhatMeRunning Sorry about your quad, but so glad you listened to your body so it didn't get worse. I hope your slower runs next week will be just what the doctor ordered. Weird about the bee/wasp. Glad you weren't stung.
@polskagirl01 That's ridiculous, but I am sure that those comments are "entertaining." Glad you had the run/walk with your son and that the dinosaurs didn't get you.
Nice run @Teresa502 . Nice to see all of the animals and no people.
Thanks @kgirlhart . Hugs to you too. I was dreading church, but they didn't make a big deal of Father's Day today. I did go to the graveyard and spent some time "talking to him" about things this afternoon. That helped. I hope you found a way to remember your dad that was meaningful for you. Nice running in those conditions. Wonder what the police were looking for/doing?
I walked for a mile in the field with Tippy after I got home. I hope to get back to the HM running next week...even though I just agreed to work the 6:30 - 3:30 shift at daycare. I love getting off at 3:30. Hate having the alarm go off at 4 am!

@polskagirl01 - all the runners "resigned"? Now that's quite the attempt at making it look like it's not your fault as the organizer. Just unbelievable all around. I hope you get compensated in some way.
@WhatMeRunning sorry about the quad issues. Hopefully it's nothing, but it was smart to ease off. That's crazy about the wasp chasing you.
Good job getting runs done today everyone.
@pfeiferlindsey glad you were feeling better. Hope you continue to feel in a better place.

I wrapped up my time at the lake today with a walk with Stella early. I debated running first but knew the walk was the most important thing to tire her out before our drive home and it was maybe going to start raining later in the morning. I decided I could probably run when I got home (which I knew was a bad idea to wait even as I said it to myself). After we got back from the walk I decided I should probably take my last chance to kayak as the threat of rain seemed to have been pushed back. Somehow I talked myself into going for a run first and then kayaking. It was a nice temperature but the humidity was definitely up there. And then the sun came out in force while i was out on the water. I had only promised myself I'd do 2 miles, but I forced myself into going out 1.5 miles so I was stuck doing 3. when I finished I got in the kayak an immediately realized, oh yeah, I'm sore from yesterday's 2 hour paddling adventure. So today was only about 20 minutes of tooling around near the shore and sitting and drifting a little bit here and there.
And then it was time to start packing up and saying goodbye to lake life. I miss it already8 -
@WhatMeRunning Was it possibly a carpenter bee? Males are very territorial and will chase you a long way and fly at your face aggressively, even bonking you in the face, but they can’t sting.
@polskagirl01 I went to the race organizer’s Facebook page and used Google translate to read the comments. So now I know how to say a bunch of curse words in Polish!8 -
@katharmonic Sounds like a heavenly weekend and you did great with the self talk and getting all that exercise in before you had to leave for home.

Golf instead of running, so this is a rest day. However, based on the line of approaching thunderstorms, don't know how much golf will actually be accomplished. Today's event is a charity tournament, so it would be unfortunate if it got weathered out.
