The 6/9 run was in high 80s (F) and today is suppose to be in the 90s (F). I'm not used to this heat, but I ran an open trail (no trees, no shade). It was definitely a struggle at the end. I think I will run the 4mi trail in the trees today at a moderate pace.
I've been doing some Strongman workouts with a coworker on the no-run days. My muscles are sore, but happy.
It be hecka hot. We were having several inches of snow just like 3 weeks ago!

Another word on tempo runs:
I originally calculated mine based on a UK website that used race times.
When I ran a 5k in 30:49 (still my best chip time), the calculator told me my easy run pace was 7:39 per k; my tempo/threshold run pace was 6:25 per k; my VO2 max pace was 5:48 per k; my speed form was 5:23 per k; and my long run pace was between 7:39 and 8:34 per k.
I have modified that slightly by calling my threshold pace faster than tempo but slower than VO2 max -- call it race pace, as it were.
All interval training does is call for faster paces interspersed with slower paces.
For me, heart rate is something I look at after a run. If I felt like I ran pretty hard, my heart rate should be higher than if I felt like I ran easier. That's not always true, but I don't get tangled up in what my Garmin tells me -- I try to remember it's an estimate and an approximation.
I confess I'm a poor trainer. I used to do long slow runs, intervals, and tempo runs during a week's worth of training, with strength training and yoga in the winter and golf in the summer. Now, I just run based on how I feel on any given day.
Never lose sight of the fact that ALL of us enjoy differing levels of fitness and ability. Your pace is your pace; your times are your times; just try to get better.
The single most important aspect of running is finding something you like and doing it. I could never run @AlphaHowls's distances or @Avidkeo's times, so I don't try to: I run my distances and my times and try to improve my own fitness level.
Sorry for being so long winded. It's the privilege that goes with being old.
I'm both awed and humbled to not only be mentioned in the same sentence as @AlphaHowls but also have someone comment positively on my time!
For the record, and so newbies don't get put off, I'm very much as @runs_on_espresso says a mid pack runner. My half marathon Pb is 2:02:31 by no means am I anything approaching fast. What I have done is improve from 3:07:00 10 years ago lol. That's when I ran my first Half. I then took a break, then picked up running again when my youngest was 6 months old (she turned 5 last Tuesday) doing C25k. I joined this group in June 3 years ago when I decided I wanted to do a Half Marathon in November. I did that Half with a time of 2:03:27. I followed a training plan and used a lot of the advice given here.
OK that ended up long winded. Basically follow your own path. I don't think I'll ever run a marathon, the commitment required to train for that is more than I'm willing to give. I have four Half marathons booked this year, and just this morning found another I'm likely to sign up for. Next year I'm thinking of improving my Park Run time (5k)6 -

This morning on Facebook was an advert for a running event in November. It's 4 different distances over 2 days! Starts with a Half Marathon in the morning. Then a cross country in the avo, with a 10k around a zoo (small country zoo) the following morning finished with a magic mile at night. This is one month after my last Half marathon of the year. @ContraryMaryMary want a weekend in New Plymouth?? 21/22 November6 -
Week 4, long run of my timed 10k running programme:
Yet again a 6.44km run, the third. First run was at 8:10min/km, the second last week at 7:58, and today at an amazing 7:38min/km. And the best thing is that I didn't crash down and wanted to die a bit. Instead I nearly ran home, and I still feel great and refreshed. Wow, so if my running programme did something it's that I can run 4 miles without feeling wasted. Success. one more run this week, a 4.88km run according to the programme. I'll make it a 5km run for a garmin badge.

Ooh, that would be so much fun, but alas, that is the big dance show for my girls so I'll be busy with hair/makeup/chauffeuring duties. I did the Three Pigs a couple of years ago which was similar - 16km in the morning, 5km trail in the afternoon and a 22km half on the Sunday - it will really teach you how to pace yourself! But seriously, because of all the other runs, the pressure to go fast is completely removed, it's all about having fun and getting it done.
My input on tempo runs - not a lot to add as everyone has made some really good points - I do mine by feel (I do know where my pace and heart rate should be but different days mean different conditions and different energy levels). Tempo runs should be hard but not that hard - you won't be able to chat, but you can still talk (while huffing and puffing), think a bit slower than half marathon pace. For an idea on times, as @tramboman said, you can go online to find a training pace calculator where you enter a recent race result (or an achievable goal race result) and it will calculate your different paces for easy/tempo/speed form running. So nice to see everyone’s progress! I’m at 14.5/50k for this month, on track to finish on time. I missed one run in order to go camping/hiking/paddleboarding but I’m okay with that, and made room in my running schedule for it. Feeling good so far!6

It actually helps me a lot to see varying perspectives and experiences, because I think I was beginning to work it up in my head that speed work was this very technically specific, incredibly difficult thing, not for the likes of little ole me. It's a relief to know that once again I was making it into way too big a deal! I don't have a HRM at the moment, and it intimidates me a little, but I can take a look at some of these plans and options and see what might be a good fit now, and just keep reminding myself that what I decide to do first doesn't mean I have to do it forever.
Today I mistimed my arrival home and since I had a few minutes left on my cooldown walk, I decided to check on my plants! I've done herbs and tomatoes for several years now, but I'm branching out this year. First time using the spoiler function for anyone who doesn't want to see pictures of my little green babies:The white rings around the plants are deer and rabbit repellent. Something got my new rosebuds this week and I'm rather put out about it!
First time growing pumpkins! This area used to be a bunch of groundcover left by the previous owners, so it's our first time growing anything else here. We're hoping it's suppressed enough with the fabric for these plants to do well, and then at the end of the growing season we'll cover it with a layer of newspaper and mulch on top to hopefully get any determined stragglers for next year. I planted the pumpkins late to time them for Halloween.
Cucumbers! I have a frame to put out soon so they can start climbing.
Tomatoes, which will need to be staked soon, and on the far right the impulse purchase of eggplant (aubergine to some of you, I think?) Ignore the untrimmed bushes please and thank you. The marigolds are pretty too but are also supposed to deter some pests - I learned that trick from Amish farmers who live near my grandparents (though we may not be using the right variety, but in that case I don't care because they're pretty, anyway.)
Herbs, lettuce, and jalapeno plants I'm planning on moving by the tomatoes soon. I'm surprised the lettuce has lasted this long, but the recent bout of frequent rain has probably helped. I have kale to plant in the boxes once it's done.
Thank you for indulging me! It's very satisfying to all of a sudden see these things I've worked for suddenly appear and do the things they're supposed to do!11 -

@penguinmama87 looks like a really nice garden you have going! Speaking of pumpkins, we are growing pumpkins this year too (by accident). After Halloween last year my wife said don't throw the pumpkins in the trash, just put them by the back fence and they will just decompose naturally. So this spring we have 4 huge pumpkin plants with yellow flowers that may turn into pumpkins. They probably won't survive the Texas heat, but they look pretty cool.
I got in 7 hot, sweaty miles this morning.

Of course it wasn't slow. It was a tempo run, at 7:13, which is the fastest 5k for me since 2016 when I was at my fittest. Next week will be a time trial, and based on that the running programme will be tailored to my (in)abilities. I'm curious!5 -

Slow 2.2 mile run. Stressful day in work and took a short break from my screen to get some fresh air/let off some steam.
Race day tomorrow. Slightly nervous about getting lost during the Ultra but I've downloaded the route to my Garmin watch and we'll be given a map. Had a masterclass from my Dad on how to read a map properly and bought a proper map compass, as the one I had was no good 😊

Busy day today! Volunteered for Parkrun, then had a coffee with a couple of the runners. Then did 45min easy run. It was easy haha.
When I got home I took the kids to the pools for an hour. That was exhausting haha.
Then some baking and some study - I'm doing some self directed study to help improve positioning etc for the patients. This is for my students. I'm actually enjoying it. And I have to say medical books from the 60s are very... In your face lol

Happy to say that I finished up my challenge this morning. 500 km in 12 weeks. It pushed me way past my comfort zone and honestly, there were days I was not sure I'd finish in time. But, I kept telling myself it wasn't over until it was over and to keep pressing on.

Not so long run today, no run yesterday. Not my best week and the month is not looking all that promising to get to my (arbitrary) 100-mile goal. It's ok. Other things are taking some priority right now but I need to just not quit altogether. Steady on! Hopefully big hike tomorrow and I'll report back on Monday.
Which, speaking of hikes, I think @teresa502 is off on her grand canyon adventure. Wishing her luck and can't wait to hear all about that!8 -

Rest day for me today. Hopefully I will be able to drag myself out of bed early enough to beat the heat tomorrow. The low is only supposed to be 75°F though, so there really won't be any beating the heat until fall.6 -
@penguinmama87 - you'll have to post again once those babies are bigger and producing giant pumpkins and other yummy veggies. Have you grown jalapeños before? They are so much better than store bought (true for most all fruit and veggies) and you can adjust how hot they are by when you pick them (dark red is the hottest).
@Scott6255 - If those pumpkins get water where they are they may do fine in the Texas heat. You could also put a mesh screen over them to provide a bit of shade for them.
@sweetdaisy13 - Hope the ultra is going well! Have fun with it! Looking forward to your race report!

I was thinking about @Teresa502 too and I hope she was prepared for the dry heat! We are having a heatwave here and it is sitting over CA, NV and AZ. There are excessive heat warnings and very low humidity (less than 10%). Hopefully they will do most of their hiking in the early morning hours before it gets too bad.
So on Thursday dh informed me that the bug (fumigation) people were coming back to treat the garage and attic with something that will help to keep the bugs from returning. It meant we had to move everything down and away from the walls in the garage. We have built high, heavy duty, shelves for storing Christmas stuff, old books, dd's childhood things, etc., etc.. He found an especially heavy trunk to move, got it half way down then needed me to help. I must not have been in place and ended up putting way too much load on my right arm. It hurt SO bad but I didn't drop the box, although I probably should have. It hurt most of the afternoon and evening and I thought I probably just strained it. Got up yesterday to find a huge dark purple bruise at the base of my bicep. I sent a picture to dd and she thinks I may have torn or ruptured one of the tendons and I should see the doctor asap in case surgery is required... ugh! The earliest I can get in to see my doctor is the end of the month so instead I opted for a video call with the nurse practitioner on Monday morning. I am hoping she can refer me to ortho next week. I tried to go for a run yesterday anyways and my arm hurt with each swing, so no run. I may try for a walk today and keeping my arm still. On the bright side it will give my hamstring more rest!8 -

I tried to go for a run yesterday anyways and my arm hurt with each swing, so no run. I may try for a walk today and keeping my arm still. On the bright side it will give my hamstring more rest!
I know you don’t want to hear this but if it is a ruptured tendon I would not wait until Monday but go to the ER. What you don’t want is for the tendon to retract because it becomes a much larger deal. Hoping it isn’t serious!5 -
Husband still not running, so we took a walk together at dawn. Heat already brutal. Last night it was absolutely disgusting, heat index was over 100 after sundown and the humidity was just sopping wet. It rained and the temp went UP. @kgirlhart Are you getting this? You all usually get our weather but a day earlier.
So I unburied the dreadmill at my mom’s house. It’s a certified antique which hasn’t been touched since my dad died twelve years ago, and not much even then. It was being used to sort laundry. But it works, although the belt is a little slippy. It’s not as well-designed as a newer model and is tricky to run on since you can’t really swing your arms freely without being worried about hitting your hands on the bars. The only way to get off is to leap onto the side rails. But it goes up to 11 mph, has a deadman’s switch, an incline setting, and even a rudimentary intervals program which only does 30 minutes at a time, with intervals of 3 minutes. I got in 30 minutes and then realized my borrowed watch (I took back the Apple watch I gave my mom since she never figured out how to use it) wasn’t syncing heart rate data. So I fiddled with settings and did another 9 minutes to figure out if the heart rate was working. All in all I’m satisfied, roughly the equivalent of a 5k with warm up and cool down.10
