That's so exciting to see progress!
Of course, if you're new to running, don't get too worried about pace
Thanks a lot. No, I'm not new, but often have to stop due to injury and other medical issues. So basically I always start at the beginning again.4 -

My locker was [FINALLY] delivered yesterday, so after my bike ride today, I finished up my home gym. I love how it turned out!BEFORE:
Basically a basement junk and yard tool storage room. I moved the landlord's stuff to shelves in the back and covered the area with shower curtains (with a tropical water scene and a boat). Need to put in an anchor to hold up the center of the curtain rod, but it works for now.
AFTER:
Had to use "panorama" mode to get everything in the picture. Floor mats are squares
The bottom of the shoe bench is full of running/cycling/treadmill shoes, and there's a bunch of small hand weights stacked beside it next to the lockers. I'm not sure yet if the colorful mat is staying or not.
My kid took it upon himself to put tape numbers on all of the lockers, but I took them off, except for his locker, #6. I'll get some keychains and smaller number labels to keep everything organized.
With the treadmill up, there's room to lay out an exercise mat and do my stretches.12 -
@polskagirl01 your home gym looks awesome! You did a great job transforming that basement.4

That is awesome! Way to go! I agree with @polskagirl01, focus on getting a good base first before getting too worried about speed.1 -

Things happened yesterday and I didn't get out to run. Which was fine because it was brutally hot and muggy. Finally we had rain overnight and this morning to break the heat a little. I ran on the treadmill after yoga this morning though because it was still threatening rain and very humid.6 -
martaindale wrote: »Went out for a couple of walks (4.3 and 3.5 miles) this weekend. With the weather being so gross, it is a nice break from running and struggling with the heat and humidity. My knee is actually feeling better, which is good news because we leave for our trip in a few days. I hope it stands up to all the hiking. I got my trekking poles in. I think they will help a lot on the big elevation hikes.
I need to vent for a sec about my 12 y/o. She is in the midst of a serious angsty phase and it is driving her dad and I crazy! In the last couple of weeks she has quit rock climbing team (which she seemed to be loving), mopes and complains every time we take a walk to the point where she will only walk way ahead of or behind us (never with us), and has informed us that she doesn't want to go on our family vacation. I know that this behavior isn't necessarily unusual for her age, but it is mentally exhausting! She is upset about something constantly. It is getting to the point where I find myself avoiding interactions with her because they are so unpleasant. Then I feel bad because she's my daughter and I love her even though she's infuriating right now, and I don't want her to feel like I'm mad at her or whatever. I told my husband/her dad that if she were a few years older I would probably have just said, fine stay home! The two of us would have a great time and it is stressing me out that her attitude may end up spoiling the experience for all of us.
I'm late to read and am skimming posts and hitting like but nothing more, sorry everyone, chaos here as usual of late.
BUT I just have to say, @martaindale I can't help but I feel your pain. My 15-y-o has been in that phase for a couple of years now, and I'm praying for it to end! Just know that we all feel resentful during this fun part of the process of raising humans. Someone said to me recently "the reason teenagers, especially girls, are such *kitten* is so that their mothers start to feel a little less attached and don't go batshit crazy when they leave home". I keep repeating that to myself. Over and over and over. We must remind ourselves that this is hormones and stuff and certainly not anything to do with us as mothers, as we're awesome mothers and one day they'll remember that! Also, I would highly recommend leaving her behind if you feel you can, or sending her to a friend's house or something. It's hard to do at first, but I've found I feel much better when I'm not resentful over either not being able to do something I want to because she doesn't want to join in, or forcing her to join in and her acting up over it. Pick your battles is my parenting motto atm.

@martaindale - having been there, done that I can honestly say be patient and it will get better. I think we went through a few rounds of it though we were best friends in between the terrible times and by the time she was in HS it was much better and I don't think we had too many more issues. I heard it referred to once as a return of the terrible twos (or threes) where kids are first trying to be a little independent and everything is 'NO'. I agree with @eleanorhawkins if you can leave her at home (assuming she really doesn't want to go and isn't just saying it) with a friend or other arrangement I would do that. If you do take her I would also want to make it clear to her that while you understand she may be unhappy to have to do some of the things planned, she is not allowed to make it miserable for all of you. She can be asked to at least attempt to enjoy the outings.
@polskagirl01 - love your home gym! I would love to turn my office/dd's bedroom into a gym one day. I do have all my free weights, ball, steps, etc. in there but no 'machines'. I would love to have a workout bench and some sort of Universal weight machine but so far I make do using a ball instead of a bench and using cords connected to the doorway instead of a machine. I can also get to the gym now as they are open but I'm not sure about working out with a mask.
All of you in the eastern portion of the US stay safe with the brutal heat! Yikes! Hope it is getting better soon. We are expected to be there, back in the 90s, by early next week and I am not looking forward to it.
Yesterday was gloriously cool and drizzly so I took Hobbes out for a good run. He really needed to get out as he had gotten into trouble earlier by managing to get the loaf of sourdough banana bread that I had made Sunday night off the counter and had eaten the majority of it. There was nothing in it that was bad for him other than just way too much wheat but I was amazed he didn't get sick. He was incredibly unfocused, crazy and zoomy though at agility which I attribute to having way more sugar than he would ever normally have.

I woke up to thunderstorms again this morning. Yesterday morning it stormed the whole time while I did yoga and got ready for work. But I was OK with it since it was a rest day. But this morning I was planning to run so I was pretty disappointed. I hoped the storm would pass through in time for me to run, but by the time it did it was almost time for work. So I decided to run at lunch. I'm glad I ran but it definitely reminded me of why I run in the morning. It was hot at 85°F feels like 91°F, dew point 72°. I only had time for 3.1 miles today since it was my lunch break, but I don't think I could have gone much further in the heat any way.
@polskagirl01 Great job on the home gym!
@shanaber I guess Hobbes saw an opportunity and took it.

@Tramboman - Is it the bread or being incredibly unfocused, crazy and zoomy? 😂😂😂😂
@kgirlhart - he had to work to get to the bread. It was far back on the counter and he managed to pull the cutting board forward and got the loaf without disturbing the large bread knife that was also on the cutting board. He doesn't realize it but I am sure he could jump up on the counter if he tried. He has jumped up on the BBQ counter outside and it is almost as high. I am glad he doesn't realize it though!4 -

Now that the baby is pretty reliably staying asleep when I get up to run, I've been leaving a bit earlier to beat the heat. Now I'm considering getting up even earlier and maybe running longer? Next week is my last training week for C25K. I'd like to improve on time a bit, and it seems like running more will do that for me (plus actually get me to 5k, since half an hour is NOT enough time at present, ha.) I'm also hitting that spot when I really, really, really like being out there and am sad if I have to miss a day.
I see references to speed work etc in training plans and referenced here in the thread. If someone feels like teaching a newbie, what does that look like? When I began running several years ago, I never deliberately tried to improve my speed, but it did happen over time (albeit slowly) as I increased my distance. And for races the adrenaline often meant I went really fast (for me) and paid for it later with very sore legs. It seems like some of it is learning and practicing awareness of my own body in the moment, which is not something I think I'm very good at. So how do I get better?6 -

@penguinmama87 - Here's some info to get started on various training workouts from easiest to speedwork. The key is to get a base of running at Z2 or lower first, then develop within all of those zones yet not overdo it. A good guideline is the 80/20 rule where 80 percent of your running should be easy (Z2 or lower).
https://www.runnersworld.com/beginner/a20812270/should-i-do-heart-rate-training/
Currently I'm pretty happy with my own schedule just as an example listed below, your own schedule could be quite different, just try and stay within the 80/20 rule as it is a solid general guideline that can work for all.
Sun - Long (90 mins Z2 with 30 min Z3 finish)
Mon - Easy (45 mins Z2)
Tue - Easy (45 mins Z2)
Wed - Threshold (7.5 min Z2 warm-up, 20-30 min Z4, 7.5 min Z2 cool-down)
Thurs - Easy (45 mins Z2)
Fri - Z5 intervals (for example 7.5 min warm-up, 12 x 30 sec sprints with 2 min Z2 recovery, 7.5 min Z2 cool-down)
Sat - Rest

@penguinmama87 running consistently you will naturally increase speed as your body develops better aerobic efficiency. @WhatMeRunning gives a good example of adding some speed workouts to your weekly schedule. Over time you will be amazed how your easy runs will get faster. Just be patient.
7 miles for me this morning. Stupid hot at @ 5:30am; 77F with a dewpoint of 75. Went easy for the 1st 2.5 miles, then did some fartleks and negative split the last half. Oh, and saw a coyote across the street just a few steps into the beginning of my run, then when I rounded the corner of my street, he passed right in front of me! that got my heartrate going!! Counting today as a speed workout.

Family has gone to visit with their cousins in VA today. I stayed home to try to catch up on some bills, cards, laundry, etc and to help mow mom's lawn later today. So, I'm trying to limit my screen time. I have managed walks the last couple of days. Planning to do a treadmill run this morning as it is HUMID outside. The grand daughter's did try to walk with my yesterday. They couldn't keep up. LOL The 9 year old said I was running...of course, she was having to run to keep up, because she is fairly short and has short legs. At least she tried. But, she quit when it started to sprinkle rain. The 12 year old and I stayed out until I finished. Than, we came in and ate the delicious Chicken Alfredo that my Step Daughter had made. She makes it sooo good.
Have a great rest of the week. I'll check in when I can.7 -
