Using Beer as motivation.

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but wanted to share.
The most direct route to my local watering hole is 1.19 miles.
This particular watering hole "rewards" it's customers with swag after so many beverages have been consumed, but only 4 per day... Those 4 can be 10, 16 or 26 ounces.
I am on the verge of getting to the ultimate goal of having my own stein hanging above the bar.
Sooo.... A not so brisk walk there, using a route that is at least 1.5 miles ( thinking about other patrons here, don't want to work up too much of a sheen)....
enjoy my 4 - 10 oz beverages.
Then a very brisk walk home, again making sure i'm going at least 1.5 miles.
That added to my daily 2 - 3 mile walk at lunch time.... So far so good.

Sounds good but to be honest if you're looking to lose weight, the walk to and from the bar is most like barely, if at all offsetting the beer calories.9

Yeah, 40oz of beer in basically one sitting is still a lot - that's more than a quart. Is it that you get a reward after every 4 beers, period? Like they have a punch-card system or something? Or do you in fact have to consume those 4 drinks all in the same visit? If it's the second thing, that's unbelievably irresponsible on the part of the bar, weird that anyone would support that kind of frat-boy recklessness.5

I don't like beer, so it wouldn't motivate me.
Now pizza--that would motivate me.2 -

I don't know where the OP is but I feel that would actually be illegal here. I don't think that restaurants are allowed to even tie their food specials to alcohol - so if they have those "chicken wing and beer" type specials they can require the purchase of a beverage - but they can't stipulate it has to be beer.5 -
I’m just glad you’re on foot.
And I say this as a woman who’s grandfather was cited for DUI. On a horse.15 -
I feel you, OP. There was a time the only way I could get DH to walk with me is if it was to our local cantina for a margarita. The calories expended didn't cancel for me, but they might have for DH (as he is larger, burns more per mile). We call it a temptation bundle. We're not original. https://chibe.upenn.edu/news/medium-use-temptation-bundling-to-create-better-habits/
tl;dr - bundle something you really want (that maybe you shouldn't do too much) with something you procrastinate (that is good for you).
While this was true for the first decade+ of our marriage, during the pandemic DH started running when his gym closed, and now he runs 5mi several times/week. Never expected that.7 -

Was the horse drunk too?
I'm glad the op is on foot too. My 8 year old cousin was killed by a drunk driver yeeeeeeeears ago and I don't think that part of the family ever got over it.8 -
If the math works for you, and it makes you happy, great - sincerely. Figuring out happy ways to balance things is important.
Wouldn't work for me: I like sturdy IPAs best, and I'm not very big.
Net walking calories for me run around 46 calories per mile. 10 ounces of a beer that makes me happy "costs" around 200 or so calories. 1.5 miles there and back (I'm assuming 3 miles total) is only 138 calories, so I'd end up in the hole. 🤷♀️
Still worth it sometimes though: Just have to dip into the calorie bank.
Since you may be new here: IMU MFP's exercise database overestimates walking calories - it's estimating gross calories (includes BMR and the daily activity calories) when what would be more accurate would be net (just the extra calories from walking). Some fitness trackers also overestimate walking calories in some scenarios.
A potentially better estimate is:
https://exrx.net/Calculators/WalkRunMETs
Pick the "net" setting.
. . . and enjoy your beer! 😋7 -

The OP said the bar will only count up to 4 beers a day for the promotion.1 -
I like to reward myself with bears.11

Ah, okay, I think I've parsed the meaning now. Still though, 4 beers is a lot of beers, even if they are short pours! If it's working for him then great, especially since he's not driving home, but...buddy, the bar will still be there if it takes you a month instead of a week to get that stein on the wall...2 -
I'll run for wine and beer. I like a good sour myself. Dogfish Head Sea Quench Ale is my biggest running motivator. That said, I couldn't drink 4 in a day, but if it's working well for you and you aren't driving, you enjoy that pour!3

Beer spray or bear spray. Which is it?2 -

More likely that the bears reward themselves with you? 😮

Perhaps some don't fully understand the very capable, outdoor-centric charm that is Mr. @NorthCascades, not sure? 🤣6 -
I walk for cookies.6

While camping in Mammoth, Calif., we had bear visitors in the middle of the night. They went through the campsite checking each of the doors of the bear boxes. Clang, clang.7

Oh, I’ve seen and admired the photos. Especially the wildflower meadows!3 -
I love my share of bears too... but not registering their smell!
I think I would be even more concerned if the ones I run into adopt the OP's B.O. mitigation guidelines and stop stinking!
I prefer a solid structure between me and the smell!2 -
I’m very much motivated by beer as well. I say keep up the good work. Whats the point of any of this if we can’t find some enjoyment in life every once in a while.5

Please forgive Ducky’s quacked sense of humor 🦆🦆
Seriously, your photography and stories are wonderful.3 -

I’ve been face to face with a few bears.
I gotta say, I prefer a nice stinky cheese as a reward.
But bears, eagles, and deer are a close second.1 -
What kind of beer are we talking here?2

Me too. Always a treat to encounter majestic wildlife. It can reset your day mentality, at least for me it takes me out of whatever rabbit hole I might have been in and I start thinking about things like how powerful humans are as a species but in that moment I'm just another animal in the woods, and a relatively weak one at that. Leaves you with a profound awe for life.
We don't have grizz hehe and our bears are notoriously shy, so it's very different from, say, Glacier Park in Montana.2 -
I VERY much dislike encountering bears. The only time I ever do is walking my dogs, and then even if they run into the woods I am looking over my shoulder on my entire (as fast as possible) walk home.3

I found myself alone in a meadow with a large cinnamon colored black bear today. ❤️5

"I found myself alone in a meadow with a large cinnamon roll" sounds like the start to an excellent novel. Or an excellent weekend, either way.7 -
At least it wasn’t a cinnamon roll AND a black bear. That sounds like a losing proposition for sure!2
-
Well now in honor of this thread in bringing a cinnamon roll on my next meadow hike. 😃4
