Talked to Garmin again and they're sending me a new module, so that should fix things! I downloaded Runkeeper and gave that a try today. It was nice to have mid-run feedback about pace etc. I know with some trackers there's a way to do that too, but I think mine is basic enough it doesn't do that. Or I'm technologically challenged - also a very valid option!
I really don't have a good sense for when shoes should be replaced but I'm thinking I might need new ones. My feet are definitely not shaped the same as they were when I was heavier! My oldest son also could use some dedicated shoes for cross country rather than just wearing his everyday play shoes, so we might actually...go to a running store, which will be a new experience for both of us! I tend to be very wary of being suckered into buying unnecessarily expensive things, but I also just don't know a lot about shoes. But I guess since I plan on doing this for the long haul, I best get comfortable!4 -
@penguinmama87 Re shoes: I can get about 500 running miles on my Brooks. Then they get rotated to walking/bum around shoes. 500 is fairly average for running shoes. Some can only get 300-400, some can get closer to 1k. You may get some feedback when shoes start to go. For me, I start getting shin splints.
I went out this morning for 5 miles. Had to stop back bome at 3 for bathroom break or I would have been in the *kitten* my short club we talked about last month 🤣 Other than that, I felt like I was running much faster than Garmin said I was. Blah.

Thank you, that's helpful! This morning I had some pain on the top of my left foot and it honestly felt like my foot was jostling around inside of the shoe even though I lace them tightly. I definitely have at least 400 miles on them now as I've had them for several years, but only since this spring have I gotten serious mileage on them. So yeah, it's probably time!5 -
I am in for 100 miles this month. Hoping it will be easier than July (only ended up with a bit over 90). But, can I just say...AUGUST ALREADY?!?!? Where has the summer gone??

Back from vacation, it was like 6 million degrees in Florida but I tried to run as much as I could while I was there. Not exactly a fun vacation, I haven’t seen my family there (aunt/uncle/brother) in 3 years and Skip hasn’t seen them in 5 so it was time to get down there. A new discount airline came to our local airport so for $49 each way we went, cost more to put the dogs in the kennel than flights and airfare LOL
Lost my mind and brought Skip a bike for her sprint triathlon ha ha. A friend of hers parents were selling a great bike and from what I can find new it was about $3,000 to $3,500 and they sold it to us for $450. Another friend said grab it! It’s in perfect shape all that carbon fiber crap that cyclists like LOL I can actually pick it up with one hand and put it on the bike rack it’s so light, I rode it before we brought it and it’s amazing the difference between that and my $125 WalMart bike LOL She’s so excited and so appreciative of me getting it for her, now we just don’t eat this week.
@AlphaHowls good luck with both jury duty and the implant.
@katharmonic with the amazing hikes you do I’d make them my priority too – love your hiking reports and the pictures are awesome. You deserve a couple days of rest, hope the aches and pains go away soon.

@Scott6255 what I do is wear a headband on my wrist to wipe the sweat away. Hats make me hotter and I seem to sweat more.

@Avidkeo I think training for something has its pluses and minuses. It gives you an end goal, but also puts pressure on you to run times or distances on days you just don’t want to. I’m glad you are enjoying the run for the run.
@polskagirl01 camp sounds awesome, love they got a medal and certificate! The 10K sounds like a great race and can you beat Kielbasa…like no, well maybe I ran a race once and you got unlimited kolaches and pigs in a blanket.
@penguinmama87 I hate to first admit how many running shoes I have and second how often I buy new ones. I’m a Brooks Launch girl and I’m wearing like 4 different ones a week now, some newer some older models. They go out of weekly rotation to the rainy/muddy run days at about 375 or 400 miles, like I said because I buy too many LOL. Like @RunsOnEspresso said most can got about 500 miles, Skip (my daughter) gets less mileage out of shoes, she wears New Balance for the most part and gets about 350 on a pair. My knees will start to talk to me if I wear a pair too long, but I track the mileage on Strava. Hi everyone! It's been a while. The last week of July was rough emotionally. My daughter was in Florida spending the summer with my family, and her dad called me asking me if I could get her back here ASAP because his mother was going into organ failure. It was a mess getting her back here because she was currently across the state with my sister and the bulk of her things were at my parents. My dad is was (is still) in the hospital at this time with 3 different bacterial and one fungal infection in his lungs. My poor girl didn't get to say bye to him before she was rushed to the airport to go say goodbye to her grandma. She was a mess, and I was too. I hated knowing she was so broken hearted and I couldn't do a dang thing to help.
ANYHOOOO! This is FINALLY a new month, so here looking towards brighter days. My goal this month is 40 miles. Not huge, but until my work schedule settles down it'll be small goals for a bit.

@Zoomie402 I'm so sorry about your daughter's grandma and your dad, too much going on. Five years ago that was us with my daughter, I went to Florida to see my mom but didn't take her, I thought mom would get better, she didn't and she died while we were driving to the airport a couple days later. It's heartbreaking to see our children lose someone they love so much. My mom lived north of Tampa in Spring Hill and that's where we were last week, my brother is still there and at one point my mom, her sister and her brother all lived on the same street. Both mom and her sister are gone but my Uncle and his wife are still there so we went to see them (and my brother by default - we don't have a good relationship). We also whipped on over to Fleming Island (near Jacksonville) my friend lives there.6

I met two friends for an uneventful 5:00 am run this morning. Cooler at 63F and seemed to be lower humidity.
Wow @katharmonic – that’s a lot of hiking miles and elevation gain. I love that you found a new hiking friend but sorry about landing on your knees on those slick boards. Ouch! But oh what beautiful views! You are getting so far along with the peaks! Do you have goal for completing all the peaks?
@polskagirl01 – What a wonderful camp leader you were! You definitely inspired those campers to get out and move. I bet the experience and the fun that you made it will stick with them the rest of their lives. Congratulations to you and the kids on the race! You look great and it sounds like a super fun event and an adventurous week/weekend for the family.
Goodness @Zoomie402 what emotional turmoil you’ve had. I’m so sorry. I hope that your dad gets better and gets out of the hospital soon.

Swallowtails are one of the few butterflies I can recognize! I knew this one looked LIKE a swallowtail, but without the tails. @Teresa502 thanks! I am hoping to finish the rest of the 46 by the end of October. It's 11 peaks left, but only 5 hikes because several of them are combined. It's totally possible but I need weather and schedules to cooperate. I'm not super excited to do another rain hike so I'm crossing my fingers for a dry August and September.

I felt better this morning so I went to the gym and sat in the sauna for 15 minutes and then attempted a short treadmill run. My hamstring was much improved and my knees felt ok. I got 2 miles done and then had to leave to pick up Stella from the boarding place. She was super excited to see me and is doing so much better, so I was very relieved. Tonight I had strength training and I added 1 more mile on the treadmill as a warmup. I told my trainer no legs today so we did all arms and some core.6 -

Ran this morning, but not as early as I had planned. I thought it was going to be better weather. The temps were better with 65°F when I started out at 9:20 am, but the humidity was high again at 83% according to Garmin. I don't trust Garmin's weather today though. It has the exact same thing for my warm up walk, run, and cool down walk. I know it warmed up about 5 degrees while I was running, according to my thermometer. It said it was 70°F and 83% humidity the entire time. I doubt that.
Anyway, today was a 40 min Tempo run...5 min Zone 1, 5 min Zone 2, 20 min Zone 3, 5 min Zone 2, 5 min Zone 1. It took a bit for my legs to loosen up, but once they did, it felt pretty good. I didn't get my HR into Zone 3 as much as I was supposed to. I felt like I was running at a pretty "hard" pace for me, but my HR didn't agree, I guess. I was happy with my splits: 12:54, 11:42, 11:40, and 12:54. I estimated from the graphs that I ran 1.77 miles at the tempo pace - did walk some during that part of the run too, with an average pace of 11:17 min/mile. That's pretty good for me.
I went to the doctor today for my annual checkup. He was impressed with my bloodwork results and found nothing to be concerned about. I don't need to go back to him for a year, unless I get sick, of course. I was pretty happy that he said all of my bloodwork was better than any he has seen in at least 2 years (I am assuming for any age group) and that my HDL is the highest that he has ever seen. It is 121. It has always been pretty high, but is steadily increasing due to running. Just another reason to keep it up. He was also impressed that I am training for a HM and told everyone in the office (staff) that I was.
I did some shopping and then, after I got home, went out and mowed my yard for 2 hours. I got plenty of exercise today.
I wanted to post, but don't have time to read everyone else's tonight. I will try to catch up tomorrow.7 -
Thanks for the tip @skippygirlsmom! I had some wristbands a long time ago, but I never used them and they have disappeared. I did find a headband, so I may just wrap that around my wrist a couple times Great that you got such a good deal on an awesome bike for Skip. I know she appreciates it (and you)!

6.6 miles this morning. Weather promised to be much cooler over night, so I planned some speed work. Well it was about 5F cooler than usual (75F 83% humidity), but I already committed, so I did 4x1 mile threshold with 3 min recovery. Some of the mile repeats didn't quite reach 1 mile, but they were quite a bit faster than they needed to be. I hardly ever get into Zone 4 HR, but Garmin says I spent 69% of the run there. So that's good enough for me for speedwork in August. Might have to put off the majority of the speed sessions until next month. Awww, who am I kidding? It won't be any better until October, then it will be too late. Oh well, suck it up son!

Sunny, mid 50s F, and a light breeze from the northeast. Started out well, but legs tired quickly in the second half. Was trying to squeeze the rest of August out of these shoes, but decided it's time to replace them before an injury.

@Teresa502 she wants to pay me back for the bike this week after she gets paid, but I’m only going to take half of what it cost, she works hard and the money she makes over the summer is what she uses for fun stuff while at school so to take $450 from her would hurt.

@katharmonic Wow. Hiking Seymour in the rain sounds really hard! I'm glad you weren't hurt, made a good friend, and enjoyed your day despite the weather. Glad you didn't see the mama bear. I'm always fearful that I will accidently get between a mamma and her cub. The second hike sounds really hard too, but worth it. Those pictures are amazing. I hope your knee is feeling better. Glad Stella is doing better!

@polskagirl01 You would think that Guinness would do a better job at verifying those things. It sounds like you really made the running fun and inspiring. I'm sure that is why they kept coming back. Great job! Also nice that you got in some solo runs. Sounds like a fun 10K, even though you were having a mild asthma attack. Glad it passed quickly once you got your meds. I'm glad your kids had fun during their race too. And a bonus reenactment to witness on the way home. What a great week you had!
@penguinmama87 I hope you and your son are able to find shoes that are good for your feet. If they seem too expensive, just ask if they have something cheaper that would work for your foot and gait. They should want to sale you something rather than nothing.
@RunsOnEspresso Glad you made it home in time. I hate it when I feel like I'm running at a decent clip and then the mile pops up and it's so slow! I'm glad the humidity was lower for you morning run, at least. But 90F is still 90F. Great running in those conditions.
@skippygirlsmom Glad you got to see your family in FL. It is SOOOOO hot there. Good for you for running at all. I have a hard time running when I visit my family there. Great deal on the bike too. Maybe you can eat pinto beans and cornbread all week. That's pretty cheap.

@rheddmobile Glad you were able to identify your butterfly. They are pretty. It is interesting the things you learn about them. I have noticed a lot of different ones on cow and horse poop before. I don't think I realized they like blood though. That's a little disconcerting.

I really do not know about the verification process. I skimmed it sort of after @Scott6255 mentioned it. The part about two witnesses pretty much kills it for me. I am not sure I could find two people in this world who want to be that close to crazy, day after day, much less run/keep up with me. It boils down to, I just want to run. I pretty much have the unofficial world record for crazy nailed and I am groovy with that.

Day one of jury selection = UGH! but did not get selected for the trial on that one. I am 'on call' every day, have to check in to see if another comes up. So, two weeks of checking status with court clerk....7 -
@AlphaHowls - I agree that "unofficially crazy" is better than "officially crazy" every time! Is it possible to get out of that jury duty by convincing them how crazy you are by showing them your fitbit data?5

Funny you mention that! One of the questions was what is the bumper sticker/decal on your vehicle. I told them 13.1 and 26.2. Then the lawyer asked, "and did you earn those?" I stated, "yes, ma'am!"
The lawyer then told the court what that meant, "that means she runs long distance."6 -

5.5 km for me today, because that's how far it was to run to the Baltic Sea from where I'm staying. Picture everyone walking by bundled up in coats looking cold, and me and my family (husband drove the kids to meet me there) in our swimsuits looking like crazy people in the water.9 -

Headed to the local track for speed work session today. I didn’t have a plan so I just ran hard on the straights and jogged/walked the turns and occasionally added running hard for a complete loop around the track into the mix. We parked about a mile from the track so I had about 3 miles of speed work. Garmin tells me I was in Zone 5 (46%), Zone 4 (25%), Zone 3 (22%) and Zone (4%).

You are such a good momma @skippgirlsmom! Sounds like Skip is a pretty darn good kid too. I’ve caught some of the T&F events. This morning I found myself wanting to move a hurdle from the side of the track and jump it. Luckily, wisdom prevailed..

Thanks everyone for the good thoughts. My daughter came back to my house yesterday and is doing well. She was able to hold her grandmas hand through the end, and was able to grieve with her family. My dad is frustrated. He's on day 13 in the hospital with no answers. He will have a bronchoscopy done today, but the doc is a little concerned because he's only been off of his blood thinners for a day. Dad thinks he'll get sent home after the procedure. Mom thinks he'll be in for a few more days. Guess we'll see!
On the good news front, I have an interview tomorrow for a job I am really wanting! I'm very excited about it. I applied June 2nd, so it's been a really long and slow process, but I'm patient enough.
@skippygirlsmom I grew up about 100 miles south of Tampa in Port Charlotte. I love the gulf coast. I'm sure that was really hard on your daughter. Hopefully she's been able to find her own peace with it. I haven't been able to watch any of the Olympics but I hear it's been crazy this year.
@katharmonic I wish my gym had a sauna. I bet that feels so good!

@Scott6255 weather is so hard to battle sometimes! It's so hot here in August, then in September when we are hoping for fall, it just stays summer. We get about 2 weeks in October before it starts to get really cold. Maybe September will be nice to you this year.

@polskagirl01 beautiful photo! I bet that was a funny sight to see. My ex-husband and I went to Vegas once in February. It was nothing but a big sheet of ice in Nebraska, and even though Vegas had snow flurries when we landed, we got on our swimsuits and headed to the pool. We got some crazy looks. When we got to the pool, it was closed for cold weather

@AlphaHowls I hate that the jury process is that you have to check in everyday and never know when you have to show up. I don't like being up in the air on my plans. I agree that you have the unofficial record for crazy running. Funny that the lawyer asked you that.

Thanks @Teresa502 ! Great job on the speed work. Unless I am all out sprinting, I can't seem to get my HR into Zone 5. I don't know if that is good or bad. LOL Except, for those odd times with it decides to go there on the warm up walk.

So far August is not going well. I'm unable to run this week due to work commitments and family activities. I can't ever recall having a week off before, so it's going to be tough.
I've also had confirmation that my Ultra Marathon race is going ahead in 6 weeks and I'm way behind in my long run training. But, as usual, I'll just see what happens on the day.
I'd like to reach 100 miles again this month, plus 10,000 feet of elevation. But it's looking unlikely.9 -
@sweetdaisy13 I hope that the family activities are fun ones, at least. One week off shouldn't hurt you. How long is your Ultra? I know I've probably asked before, but I have forgotten.3

So the woman with the Guinness Book of World Records lives in New Jersey and she lists the accomplishment on her resume in Linkedin. She’s run 126 marathons (doesn’t divide out HM and full) and 62 ultras. Another woman in 2018 claimed to run 141 in a year. All so interesting to read. Ah she started the Awesomesauce Events which a friend of mine does, you can any distance and have I think 48 hours to finish it, so you can start a marathon at 8 am and complete 12 miles and then at midnight go back out to finish the rest. She doesn’t run she walks everything. Again interesting.
@AlphaHowls you definitely have the unofficial record!! And then some. When I lived in NJ you went ONE day, if you didn’t get selected you were done. Thank you very much. I vote you show them your fitbit data! Ha ha We are always asked “is anyone in your family in law enforcement” “yes” “will it prevent you judging my client fairly” “yes it will”

@Teresa502 thank you, she is a really good kid. She’s has given me some heartache but nothing compared to what I’ve given my mom that’s for sure ha ha. I was telling her the other day that when I was in HS we had to do all different sections and different sports, like gymnastics, softball, track and field, field hockey, tennis. She was like what?! Oh yeah I had to act like freaking Simone Biles and climb up on a dang balance beam and try not to die, and the uneven bars, are these people nuts!!! So during T&F I had to high jump and hurdle (I’m 5’6” will long legs), she was like no way..girl your momma could hurdle back in the day ha ha okay enough to get a good grade but that was it. I’m glad your wisdom prevailed!!

I tried my best to keep my HR in Zone 1 today, so this run was really slow....and I failed at the Zone 1 thing. I was in Zone 2 for 89% of the run, but most of it was around 140, so not too bad. The run itself was easy, but mentally it was hard - it took sooo long to get to the first mile. I tried to not worry about the pace and trust that there is a reason to keep it nice and easy. But, it's hard when my pace was 4.0 mph, and I often walk faster than that!
I went down to mom's and did the weed eating while my brother mowed with his zero turn and mom did the push mowing trim work. I thought we were going to get stormed on before we got done, but only a sprinkle.5
