I don't hunt, mainly b/c I find it boring. I have nothing against hunters though, except people like my father who do it illegally. I was just curious. A lot of people around where I live bait the hell out of deer year in/year out and year round.

I personally think it's tacky and lazy. But, I'm not a hunter, so you'll prolly disagree with me. I do however, get highly pissed at people who simply hunt for the rack, cut the head off and leave the body laying in the woods.

    I fish whenever I can.
I agree. Wasting an animal's life is seriously immoral. I do spend much of the spring and summer planting food plots for the deer and turkey on my property. I do not bait deer, and I hunt for food. Because I hunt for food, I prefer a bigger animal (more food), but I am not in any way a trophy hunter, and I do hunt only in season.

I'm glad you clarified your stance, I largely agree with you.
Next time, don't jump to conclusions because someone doesn't feel the exact same way you do.

Put me the box of jumping to conclusions. Sorry. I guess I am touchy on this subject because I was on a debate board and got raked over the coals about deer hunting and baiting being bad. I myself don't consider planting food plots and putting out corn baiting, because it's no guarantee to get a deer. We kill for food, but it sure is nice when you can get a big buck to mount on the wall.

my favorite venison dish is canned venison. I serve it up with some uncle ben's wild rice and some green beans.
  • I don't have any really amazing recipes as i prefer wild game to store bought meat anytime. I like rabbit or even squirrel cooked in fresh homemade spaghetti sauce! Venison roasts tend to dry out, so I will cook 1 pork roast, 1 beef roast and 1 venison roast all in the same pan and we can eat for quite some time. This summer, I've been doing a lot of smoking the fish that i've caught...mmm. Getting hungry!

Took me alot of years to figure out how to cook a good deer roast, but finally got a no-fail, easy recipe. Clean your roast good, get all that white stuff off, put it in your crock pot, sprinkle it with a few shots of worstershire & a few shots of soy sauce, cover it with a couple sliced up onions, then mix up one can of cream of mushroom (or cream of chicken either one is fine) and one envelope of dry onion soup mix, pour over your roast & onions, cook all day on low. Turns out perfect every time. Moist & very flavorful. I've used the toughest cuts & it still turns out great.

  • I am definately in for a hunt group. I don't actually hunt - not for any particular reason, I stay in the warm house & let the guys go! But I clean & cook everything he brings home! Grew up eating white tail deer & love having a freezer full. My boyfriend hunts deer, turkey, bear, & small game. There is a small elk heard in PA & you have to enter a lottery for a license, got our fingers crossed. We have an excellent bird dog (brittany) who brought us home alot of grouse & pheasants over the years. He is old & retired now, but I loved training him & would love to hear from other bird dog owners. I can share some training tips & ideas. I would also love to share game recipes!

Wether some choose to belive in it or not, deer hunting is vital. Two years ago driving to deer camp I counted 17 deer lying along the roadside or in the median. Now lets take a look at the aftermath of deer crossing the roadways, multiple car accidents, some minor, some substantial enough that occupants of the vehicles had to be extricated from their vehicles and life flighted to the nearest trauma unit., if they were lucky enough to make it out of the vehicle alive. So in my opinion it is vital for safety measures for our roadways, not to mention the amount of great programs out there for kids, a chance to get them off their xbox or playstations and see the world, see nature, pull the trigger if they want or just spend quality time with their parents. Yes it is quality time, you get to see the excitement on their faces when the deer come out in view, not to mention the hours of time you get to sit with them and talk instead of them growing up glued to a tv.
  • i'm going bow hunting for the first time this year for deer! I'm a vegetarian but am pretty good on the target range :-)

    cant wait!

Good luck! Have a blast! Bow hunting is absolutely the best time of the year for hunting!

That's awesome....I'm dying to get a bow...my hubby has one...but I can't pull the draw weight he has it set to...I need a lighter one.
A few years ago they legalized cross bows in PA, much easier, & since you don't have to draw, you're not detected as easily. My boyfriend got one a few years ago & has got a deer in archery every year since. Some people think they take the challenge away, but you're still hunting, still have to have the deer within rannge, I guess it just depends on your personal hunting preferences.

Completely agree, we are working on our 3rd generation of boys at hunting camp, all teenagers now. My father-in-law started it, my boyfriend & his brother & their friends grew up hunting, now their boys are serious little hunters & it's so great to see this continue through the generations. 40 years of awesome hunting stories. Hunting has kept the boys away from the PS3 atleast for part of the year & kept them all connected with their fathers & eachother. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Since we have pretty much destroyed all the wild predators of deer, hunting them is necessary to control the population. I have no issues with hunting except for trophy hunting where a person wastes the meat. I don't hunt because getting a gun license here in Canada is a pain and all the people I know who hunt, hunt when I would not be able to. Maybe I will find hunters who hunt when I would be able to during the season, and go through the trouble. At this point I have been able to get the meat without having to hunt which I have appreciated a great deal. I love ground venison burgers. I wish I could get moose meat more often, but I do get to eat it at a friends on occasion.

Yeah, it's good. I have a recipe, but forgot about it & haven't made it in a long time, I'm writing myself a note to dig the recipe out when I get home, I'm still trying to use up last year's deer meat before this year's season.

Gotta give a shameless plug for a friend of mine. Chef Myron's 20 Gauge is awesome on venison and other game meats. Myron owns my Springer's mother and we've hunted with him and the other dogs for pheasant. He's a great guy and his sauces are great. I'll toss 20 gauge in with my potroast/venison and it always comes out good. We'll also slice it up real thin and put the sauce on it then grill like teriyaki. I've been to parties where people don't have a clue that they're eating venison when we cook it that way.

Thanks to hurricane Irene we just lost the last of the venison that was in our freezer. And some of it was awesome sausage :( I told DH he has to get two this year to make up for it.

BTW...we're in MA, one of the most anti-gun, anti-hunting states in the union. I have one friend who in one year hit 3 deer on the highway. All 3 jumped out in front of him in areas that were built up. Our other big issue around here are coyotes. Even the over population of the coyotes isn't keeping the deer population down.

I got my first bow when I was 5 years old. Although my schedule doesn't allow me to go hunting every year (archery only), I still consider myself a hunter.
Arizona is a tough state for archery hunters. In most parts of the state baiting, food crops, and the other little tricks just don't work. Our desert Mule Deer don't think like the Easter Whitetail.

The three basic methods of hunting here are: walk your *kitten* of (Spot and stalk; my preference), tree-stand over a water hole or trail, or road hunt along forests that are too thick to walk. Archery hunters in AZ also have a fairly low success rate because much of our terrain is wide open, making those 40yard-or-less shots rare.

As for the guy who doesn't think food plots and baiting is fair, let me ask you this... why is that any less fair than all of the modern technology incorporated into hunting to increase hunter odds (laser range finders, scent-free suits, trail cameras, high-speed bows, scent lures, rattling, mating calls, etc)? I also don't agree with baiting an animal, but it's still no guarantee for success. The reality is, unless you plan on clubbing your game to death with a stick or rock, modern man has continuously taken steps to improve his chances. At what point does it stop being "fair"? I don't know the answer to that, but if you play by the rules, it's still a terrific challenge to take a big game animal (at least for me with my bow here in AZ).

I'm not gonna call baiting bad or immoral necessarily. I just think it takes away the real hunt. You miss out on the strategy of trying find the right spot ahead of time, trying to get to that spot before sun-up, staying as silent as possible, being mindful of wind direction, tracking, monitoring their scat, trying to spot em & close in when possible... all the things that I think are part of the hunt and lead up to the actual shot. Baiting, to me, takes away all of that.

My attempts at freezer restocking begin Saturday.

I've gotten rave reviews for my deer jerky, shredded bbq & chili from all my friends. My shredded bbq is probably one of the most requested items i make.

I am fortunate enough that I am usually able to provide meat, not only for myself, but most of my family, the occasional friend wanting a deer and also donate one or 2 to the "Hunters feeding the hungry" program.

Planting food plots for them isn't baiting like I think your refering to though. Hubby is up in the woods by 5 and there until dark. He has to call them, rattle them, testing wind, wearing every type of scent away product there, ect. He has to scope out the perfect spots for weeks before hand. He finds their bedding areas, trails, ect. He puts aLOT of work into it. And he has actually never shot a dear at or near his food plot. It just gets them roaming on HIS land which is what he needs. I guess what he does that has been called "baiting" isn't actually the kid of baiting I think your refering to. He goes thru a hell of alot of work and time away from home to go weeks without seeing a good deer if any. Even with all that work.

My oldest son turns 12yo this year. He cannot wait to hunt! Now I have to find a local hunter's safety course! And he is an avid fisherman already!! In his world, there is never enough fishing. It's really cool to see them enjoy the same activities that you enjoy as an adult!

Not a hunter myself, but I can definitely appreciate those that do. They're helping with population control, and basically eating off the land. There are sooo many things you can do with deer meat, make it into sausage, steak, jerky, etc. I think it's quite respectable. I am so against hunting PURELY for sport though, like when you shoot something you don't plan on eating just to have a trophy. It gets me so unbelievably angry!!! There is a really nice gun shop not too far from here, and I love the guns there but I HATE going there because they have so many animal heads mounted that they've shot themselves, and did NOT eat, just left. It's unnecessary.

I am a hunter. I live in Colorado and there are great unique animals to hunt for. I love the meat and the fact that they are not pumped full of hormones like the meat you can buy in the store. We are doing antelope and elk this year. Good luck to everyone. I would always love to get some new recipies! I have to say, jerky is awesome as well as sausage, and you cannot beat having a good steak.

    Question,

Are you a real hunter? Or are you someone who baits deer (or w/e animal) year round and then shoots them at the corn pile/salt block on the first day of season?

My family has a farm (family farm we don't live there), somebody tried this, my family wasn't thrilled. Not to mention we have posted not to hunt on our land. We like to actually hunt the deer ourselves. Imagine that.
