Zero Carb eating

Zero Carb ( ZC ), is not really 0 carbs. I get some carbs from eggs. So 0-5 grams of carbs. I see Keto posts, and other forms of low carb spoken about, but not this way of eating.
So I felt I would post, and see if anyone else eats this way, and also post about my food, and results. I understand this isn't for everyone. We'll see if it is for me. If I can't stick to it, I won't just disappear. I'll let you know I can't follow it.
Today, I had a sausage and cheese omelet for breakfast, lunch will be a lb. of chicken thighs.. skin & bone included. Dinner is 9 ozs. of sirloin tip steak.. thin sliced. I don't need much variety, so you may see a lot of the same meals, with changes from week to week, but not so much, day to day.
Since today is the first post, that's about it. I'll have more to say tomorrow, if anyone else decides to respond, or I see some results. That could be weight loss, or blood sugar, since I am diabetic.
We'll see how this develops.

Many years ago I did something similar, called Dr. Stillman's Diet. It consisted of eating only meat, eggs, and cottage cheese and drinking a lot of water. Yes, you can lose weight on a very restrictive diet like that, but it is very hard to sustain long term. I got so I hated eggs and chicken and wouldn't eat either for several years. I still won't touch cottage cheese. Constipation can be a real problem as well as vitamin deficiencies.27

WOW! I couldn't do this or at least not for but a few days. I do 15 + or - 3 Net Carbs/day along with 1200 calorie max. That at least has let me have a few veggies (low carb ones) and a peach per day during the season.2

Wow! That sounds very restrictive. I hope you keep posting and let us know how you do and how your energy levels out. I hope it works out for you.2

Try looking at the "carnivore" threads:

The Buff Dudes tried carnivore for 30 days and both gave it a "No Flex" (thumbs down.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4OmsKEWC10&t=2s
Notes:- They were eating wild caught/organic/grass fed.
- They mentioned the importance of eating "snout to tail" - so got in some offal like liver.
- Chicken breast is normally a staple for them, but since on this diet you get all your fats from meat/eggs, skipped chix breast for higher fat options.

@nvmomketo: have you done zero carb/carnivore?0

What is the reason for no carbs, exactly? I see you're diabetic, but I didn't think they typically eliminated ALL carbs. I'm curious, because to me cutting out all carbs, including those from veggies (which are almost all carbs) and nuts/seeds sounds unhealthy long-term, if not short-term.
I'm curious to know how this works out for you.17 -

While the American Diabetic Association does not give a blanket carb recommendation, they do say "be sure to include lots of non-starchy vegetables" which would make zero carb impossible.

Your health care team knows you best, and our new nutrition consensus report gives them recommendations based on the latest research. Here are some highlights:
There is no “diabetes diet.”
Really. Talk to your doctor and get a referral to a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) who can help you figure out what eating plan makes the most sense for you and your treatment goals.
You have choices—lots.
Many different eating patterns can help you manage your diabetes—from Mediterranean to low-carbohydrate to vegetarian. Whatever you choose, be sure to include lots of non-starchy vegetables, minimize added sugars
and refined grains, and choose whole, minimally processed foods.
Macronutrients may vary.
We wish we could tell you the perfect percentage of calories from carbs, protein, and fat that you need, but the truth is the percentages can and should be individualized.
Carbs are not one-size-fits-all.
While there is growing evidence to show that low-carbohydrate eating patterns can benefit people with diabetes and prediabetes, there is no one definition for “low carb.” For some, following an eating pattern lower in carbs (26–45% of total calories from carbohydrate) showed better blood sugars and a reduction in diabetes medications, among other benefits. Work closely with your doctor and RDN if you choose a lower carb approach to minimize risks (such as hypoglycemia) and maximize success.12 -

thats not what OP said though...
you know me and that i live on a farm. you know im not going to let good bones go to waste. but im not going to EAT bones. use them, but not EAT them....6 -
I have a friend who is a runner and also does carnivore. He is a type 1 so being fully keto adapted means less insulin needed.
You should expect to feel a little under the weather during the adjustment period. Stay hydrated and up your electrolytes and it should help.3 -

I think it was just a poorly worded sentence and the OP meant that the one pound measure of chicken thighs included the skin and bones, so that less than a pound of cooked chicken meat would actually be consumed.
At least, that's what I hope the OP meant.20 -

i would hope not but i try not to make assumptions.... because you never know with people....7 -
Yes, there are quite a few carnivores. Some of us have been doing this for years.5

I hope that goes well for you. I think I would find this WOE to be unpleasant.16

Being diabetic, this way of eating may be very hard on your already stressed kidneys. Did you speak to your doctor about this ?23

I don't really understand why anyone would put themselves through this when there are so many other easier and healthier ways to lose weight.24

Let me address questions/statements here.
First of all, this isn't Stillman's. I have done other low carb plans before, but this isn't low carb. Stillman's aims for low fat meats. I aim for the highest fat possible. Lots of butter which I fry foods in. I also eat the skin of poultry. I think I can have a little dairy, but other than extra sharp cheddar, I will not be doing so ( and rarely ). I have lactose issues, and more importantly, not a fan of dairy overall. Just a little cheese on rare occasions.
Second. I didn't eat the bones.. I was simply saying the weight included the bone. I ate the skin, and tossed the bones in the garbage. I had 1.35 lbs. MINUS the weight of the bones. Whatever that is.
Third, I am a CHF patient, working to get to 210 lbs., or less, so I can have mitral valve replacement. I was born with this issue, Started having breathing issues as a teen, stopped exercising as much, gained weight, and was diagnosed in 2001, right after 9/11. I weighed 361 bs., and I am 5'6". I lost weight, and was off diabetes meds for 6 years, with 5-5.5 A1C's, so I know very low carb can work. I have been down to 240 lbs. years ago, but currently was back up to 280.6 as of yesterday, due to inconsistency. I get tested for everything, being a CHF patient, AND a diabetic. No, my time eating LC, wasn't loved by my doctors, but my results have been. Especially when I stuck on it for years, with minimal " cheats ". I should have kept on it strict, and lost the other 100 lbs., but mostly, I maintained, by having a cheat meal 1-2 times a week, which kept my blood sugars stable, and below 125 mg/dL.. big improvement from A1C's above 12, in my first decade of managing my diseases. The problem was that I started indulging in more carbs, and my weight, and test results started to go the wrong way. I was put back on some pills, and basal Insulin at night.. 15 units. So, I decided that it would be best to either commit FULLY, or admit I wasn't going to actually follow a LC plan. Then I admitted to myself that the only reason I eat any carbs, is it's expected of me. There are NO essential carbs. The body has ways to produce ALL the glucose you need. So why eat carbs, unless you WANT to? Nutrients have other sources, and I have never been low enough on any nutrient that my doctors care about. After 20 years of seeing doctors and being tested, my kidneys are still doing great. Lasix, which I take, a diuretic, is a far more dangerous thing for my kidneys, but no damage at all. A1C, blood panel, nutrient levels, and lipid panels, are tested at east every 6 months, so will be repeated in less than 4 months, since I haven't been to doctor for 2 months. Half the tests in a month, the rest 3 months later. I take 16 pills a day, which I am hoping to drop, as well as the Insulin.. WHEN my doctor allows it. Obviously, I am doing this way of eating, because I see POSITIVE results, and would quit, if it was doing anything my doctor was concerned about. My doctors, especially my cardiologists, LOVE Keto or lower carb. Being in ketosis is good for me, they say, as long as I don't cheat enough to cause cravings, and go off plan.. basically, be consistent, or find something else.
Last of all, is the comments about how YOU wouldn't or couldn't do this.. Then don't. I am not suggesting you do so. Eat what works for you. Why would I care about anyone else's opinion here. I didn't ask for it. I simply said I AM doing this. I appreciate support, or well-intentioned questions, but if I started this with weak enough convictions, that you could talk me out of it, with a post, I would likely have never started it. I wish you well eating whatever you eat, but I am not YOU. I don't do well eating carbs, and I don't really like any carbs, other than the tiny amount in eggs. I love eggs. I eat 5-6 a day, and my cholesterol is 123, my LDL, and triglycerides are about 70-80, and my HDL was 42 the last time it was tested.. I know some people see rapid increases in TChol with eggs.. I don't.
I will just ignore the negative comments, and assume you mean well, but you are wasting your time. I will stay on this, or quit, based on results, and nothing else.. with obvious input from my doctors. It is not as big a jump as most people would find it, since I already did LC, but I hope to be more consistent, and HAPPIER, without having to force myself to eat a few veggies, to make others feel more comfortable, when I talk about my meals.
I get that most people like carbs. I really don't. I don't miss them, at all. Which is why I decided to do this, but I do realize that 95% of people would not do well on this. They would never stick to it. I prefer this over LC. I have done a few test runs at this, and this is simply me jumping in completely, not a random decision to eat this way, because it sounded cool, or I feel for some promise of better than average results.
Hope that clears up most of the questions, and you stay to hear what happens for me, along the way.13 -
Results for day 1:
Yes, any very low carb plan will have immediate, BIG results, so no need to wait a week. This is simply due to the diuretic effect of this way of eating, and so is reduced blood sugars, since I ate almost no carbs, so the only other glucose I got, is from my body producing JUST what it needs to function. Hard to have a high blood GLUCOSE level, without a lot of glucose, right?
So I did lose 4.2 lbs. I will be drinking an extra .5 liter of water a day ( 2.5 ), instead of 2, for the first 2 weeks, since I hope to miss the carb " flu ", which for me, seems to be from dehydration. I don't normally have this problem, if I drink a little extra water, until the diuretic effect lessens. I'm still limited on fluid intake, due to CHF, so of course, I will lose quickly at the start. The first 10-15 are just water. No need to be excited.
I test 3 times a day, before every meal, now that I am on basal Insulin. Thursday, knowing I was starting Friday, I did have some extra carbs, which added water weight, allowing for a dramatic first day loss.. another reason not to think 4.2 lbs. is a big deal... as well as being responsible for my 232 blood sugar before breakfast yesterday. Before lunch, it was 197.. I don't think restaurant food is as good as food I cook at home.. or maybe I was burning off the last of my glycogen?? Not a huge drop. I at dinner at 9 p.m., and at that point, it was 132 mg/dL.. still a bit high.
Today, I tested, and it was 113 mg/dL, before I had breakfast.. which was 5 medium eggs, and 4 sausage patties, cooked in half a stick of butter. Lunch will be 8 ozs. of Ahi tuna steaks, cooked in the other half a stick of butter, and dinner will be another 1.35 lbs of chicken thighs.
So far, good results. I slept well, feel good. Not too full. My lunches tend to be smaller, so big breakfasts and dinners. I've though about cutting to 2 meals, but I like cooking, and it allows for more variety, and is when I get most of my seafood.
2,650 calories.. 3 grams of carbs, although it comes up as 0% carbs.. 27% protein ( 175 grams ), and 73% fat ( 214 grams ).
Supposedly, since this is 1000 calories more than recommended to lose 2 lbs., I shouldn't be losing ANY weight eating this many calories. I should be maintaining. We'll see if I have to drop calories a bit later. Right now, I am just eating what I want, then tracking. I have meal plans, but may add butter, or mayo at meal time. Yesterday I was 26/74.. fat/protein, and only 2,305 calories.
That's all folks! Have a great day.5 -
methinks the poster doth protest too much
Seems extreme and unnecessary and nutritionally inadequate to me
But anyway, good luck for the long haul.
Day 1 - long way ahead29
