My coach set up my runs for next week. A 12-mile week so my October goal is now 80.2 miles (previous goal was 68.2). Thank god these 2 weeks are almost up LOL5
-
Walked 1, Ran 4.
October totals: Walk 12, Run 42.56 -
15.5 mile trail run today, with an average pace of 10:55 min per mile and 2,081 feet of elevation.
Testing out some new Clif Energy bloks to fuel an ultra I have in a few weeks. Took one at 6 miles and another at mile 13 and felt it gave me some energy, but I'm not sure if it was the product or psychological.
October cumulative:
47.4 miles
4,415 feet of elevation7 -
@Scott6255 maybe desperate... maybe just weird... this was right next to several large apartment buildings, where they should have the same (perfectly fine to drink) tap water that I put in the bottle. @quilteryoyo and @Teresa502 that's so funny that it means food safe. They're probably required to put that on there. My cheaper soft flasks have it too (but water out of them tastes plasticy oh and one got a hole and leaked all over me). A bleach solution sounds perfect.
I've been tired all week, but I want to get to the forest tomorrow to see the leaves. Will try to sleep in first
ETA: I say I'm tired, but then I see @sweetdaisy13 's trail run and I want to GO!7 -
@martaindale Uneventful runs are good runs. You are doing great. Hope you like the new gels.
@Teresa502 You are doing so good. I hope you enjoy the survival class tomorrow.
Nice @CarsonSurfs .
@sweetdaisy13 If they gave you energy, does it really matter if it's real or psychological? Great run.

Hi all - kind of hopelessly behind. Not sure when I last posted actually. But read through quickly just to see what y'all are up to. I will catch up better this weekend!
No run today or Wednesday, but a nice run yesterday after work. Tomorrow I will do a shorter run and then Sunday I have a 10-mile race. It's called the Mountain Goat and it does not involve a mountain but it features a lot of big hills in the city. It's the biggest local race in terms of numbers of runners and is usually a fun event. Except for the hills. I am not excited to do it. I signed up for this originally almost two years ago and through cancelled, deferred, and postponed dates it is finally here. And I'm a different person now and regretting signing up But I have a friend who will be running slow and steady with me and we'll talk each other through it. At least it promises to be a nice, if cool, day.8 -
Good luck on your race on Sunday @katharmonic ! Glad you have a friend you are going to run with. That will make it fun.1

I met a couple of friends for 5 miles this morning and then I ran another 5 miles by myself. I’m signed up for a Wilderness Survival Class which lasts all day tomorrow so thought I had better get a long run in today.
@polskagirl01 – According to Google, that’s the symbol that the item is safe to come into contact with food. Do you have bleach that you could dilute in soapy water to wash it in again? The pictures are gorgeous!
Thanks for the info on the ring neck snake @rheddmobile. Glad you saved it!
I bet it’s a beautiful day for your trip @Tramboman – share pictures with us please!
@Scott6255 and @Orphia – Ya’ll are scaring me! I just bought a new pair of the Ghost 13s.
I regret to report that @Tramboman does not know how to take pictures.3 -
@Scott6255 @Teresa502 This is my first pair of Ghosts. I've had a lot of pairs of Nike Pegasus 33 and 34 and 2 pairs of Nike Wildhorse which have all been great. I've worn Brooks before (Ravenna and Adrenaline) but I should not have had those support shoes and/or shouldn't have worn them with orthotics. Disappointed that the neutral Ghosts were so hard with my orthotics.2
-
Hahaha I think @Tramboman needs to sign up for some classes. We need a LOL button.2
-
@rheddmobile, I know the feeling but there’s no pressure and you’re with a friend so I bet you’ll have a great day.
Rant in spoilerI’m having a bit of a blah day - our dozy prime minister announced yesterday that we’re staying locked up untitled we’re at 90% double dose vaccination. Melbourne celebrated freedom day yesterday and they’re at 70% vaxxed. Auckland is at 87% first dose and the best we can do is get takeaway coffee and food. They reckon end of November!
I had to give my husband a haircut this morning (a brief moment of hilarity, and I think I did pretty well).
Technically we can’t have people indoors at our homes but the weather is shite (windy and cold, and now also drizzling) so most of us are saying screw that. The children have been home from school for nine weeks now and are desperate for socialization so we’ve started having play dates (all our friends are vaxxed).
Anyway, the run this morning didn’t have its usual affect, and I can garden because weather, so instead I offered my make a stegosaurus birthday cake for my friend’s son who’s turning 6 tomorrow. Perked me up a little but I’m still annoyed.
TL:DR I’m in a funk and running didn’t help. But dinosaur cake!

@ContraryMaryMary So sorry that you are going to be in lockdown until the end of November. That really stinks. I'm sure your DH's hair looks good. Mom used to do my dad's. His was super curly, so some days it looked good. Other days, not so much, but I didn't say anything. Short is short, for the most part. Love the dinosaur cake! You are very talented. Hang in there.1

You're right @quilteryoyo, I think I need to try them a few more times to be certain. They are jelly (jello in the US) blocks that contain Carbs (31g) and Caffeine (68 mg) per block and whilst I'm sure they did help I'm not yet truly convinced.
When running an ultra marathon I tend to eat 'real' food such as flapjacks, salted crackers, baby food pouches etc as opposed to the gels/carb bars, but this is the first time I've tried something artificial like this.3 -

@ContraryMaryMary Cake porn is ALWAYS better than shoe porn!!!!
@quilteryoyo You know the saying about old dogs... My spouse is the picture taker -- I show up in some of the shots as the comic relief.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)
2021 Races:
6/26 Direction Up 5k, Solon, OH 31:48 chip; 31:59 Garmin; 53d overall; 2d male 65 and over
7/17 Run of the Ox 5k, Mantua, OH 32:19 Garmin; 44th overall; 3d place male 60 and over5 -
@ContraryMaryMary That stinks that you’ll be in lockdown so long. Your cake looks amazing though!
Coach Greg had me run 20 minutes at 11:32-12:32 min/mile pace with warm up and cool down. I kept an average 11:40 pace. I ended up walking afterwards for awhile to get some more distance.5 -
Somehow skipped almost 2 pages.
@julieannegannon I have a very similar roller to the one @shanaber linked too. It is a great all-purpose foam roller. Highly recommend. I also have a lacrosse ball (cheap at any sporting goods store) that is my go to for more targeted relief, a small ball with plastic spikes that I use for my plantar fascia sometimes, and a travel roller (basically a smaller version of the workhorse one). My living room kind of looks like a PT office but it's nice to have options and foam rolling was a game changer for me with recovery.
@kgirlhart I saw your race is at Possum Kingdom. I did a race there earlier this year and it is such a pretty set of trails. Have a great time and I can't wait to see some pics.
@Teresa502 I want to see what you think of the 13s. I have several pairs of the 12s and had enough backups that I haven't used any 13s. Maybe I have 1 pair of 13s in my closet stockpile. Hopefully your experience is better than @Scott6255 and @Orphia
@sweetdaisy13 Glad you are enjoying the lower mileage. Sounds like you needed a little break.
@ContraryMaryMary That cake is super cool!4 -

I have liked the Ghost 12s, 13s, and now the 14s. I don't notice a whole lot of difference but maybe I'm just waiting so long to replace them that a new pair feels heavenly no matter what.

Last long run before my HM in 2 weeks. It went ok. Is was warm and very humid. The first HM training cycle of the year is always tough and this one was no different. I expect the race will go just fine. I'm ready and having the 12 mile long run gives me mental reassurance that I can do the distance.
I have been neglecting my recovery and I am feeling it today. After me run I stretched but then we had to get to appointments for haircuts and I didn't get to foam roll or get a good stretch in for a few hours. I was limping by the time we got back because my calves were so right. Rolling and a theragun session helped some but I'm still hurting. I'll take an Epsom salt bath tonight and make sure I stretch and roll consistently over the next couple of weeks.7 -
@martaindale Glad the run was okay, but sorry you didn't get to do all of your normal after run activities and that your calves are sore. Hope the bath makes you feel like new.0
-
@Orphia @Teresa502 @martaindale I have run almost exclusively in Ghosts since 2017, and really love them. I still run in the first pair of 13s that I bought in June, but the ones I bought in August for some reason always seem to exacerbate my lower leg pain. I know that seems crazy, and I probably am, but that is what I have deduced.
@martaindale great job on your 12 mile run. You're ready for your HM.
@sweetdaisy13 glad you found the joy in running again by lowering your mileage (although that 15+ mile trail run must have felt good). That was a good idea.
@ContraryMaryMary that really sucks being in lockdown until November Try to hang in there! That cake is awesome!!!5
