10k easy run on the Germantown greenway plus enough walking to bring it to 10.5 miles. Literally perfect running weather, I can’t see how it could be better. Trees are finally starting to turn here. I saw a junco and a Tennessee warbler, which haven’t been around since last March! Also hearing white throated sparrows singing Oh Sweet Canada Canada Canada!
My Strava has been super fast the past few runs, today it was calling miles almost a tenth of a mile early which made for some very encouraging times! Uh, no, that easy pace was not actually under 10 minutes, more like 11 something. My husband’s Strava on his watch was about right, his phone was slower. Running MapMyRun on his phone for the calories, so we had three different sets of GPS data for the same run. Over the course of 11 miles my Strava invented an entire extra mile compared to MapMyRun! I have run the area enough to know more or less what was accurate, and my Strava was definitely cray cray. Looking at the maps they seem identical, no weird straight or wandering lines. I wonder what happened.
Which reminds me I read an article the other day which said that a study of runners whose watches had been altered to give artificially fast times in training actually improved more in training than those who were accurate and those who were slow. They were encouraged by their improvement and so they worked harder, while the slow people were discouraged and tended to give up. Hmmm…7 -

@rheddmobile Great run and walk. That is interesting about Strava. Who knows why it went cray cray. I hope it gets fixed. Also very interesting about the altered watches and times. I can see how thinking you were improving would make you want to work a bit harder than those who were working hard and getting slower instead. That would make me want to quit too. LOL2 -

I wonder myself since I often run the exact same route why my first or more can be off by .2 etc/ I think the GPS that the devices bounce off might be different and as the earth changes tilt sometimes maybe the GPS your device uses moves to another sat? There is also a dead spot in my neighborhood where XMradio doesn't work so I am sure that is part of it. But I totally agree that when I am running faster I am much more encouraged to keep going than when I think I am working hard and the split looks slow.3 -

I didn't get my normal 5 mile run in on Saturday because Hubs was out of town and I was flying solo with the kiddo (6). Instead of skipping all together, I let him out to play in the front yard and I ran from the bottom of our cul-de-sac to our garage door and back- which is a hill - 12 times equally 1.25 miles, and I convinced Kiddo to do a quick .25 jog with me. I figured I'd start working on those hills that are going to give me a problem during the race I signed up for in a month. LOL.7 -
8 Nov total 49.82 out of 150 goal. 234.54 left for run the year so need to avg 4.425 the rest of the year to complete on time. Lots of strange technical issues today with my chest polar strap and bluetooth and GPS distancing. Perhaps the planets are aligned in some strange way. On my little 2 mile run, the first mile was off by .05 but it made it up on the way back. No idea what my watch and atmospheric things are playing games. Drives me a little bats sometimes tho. If I let my Apple watch read my heart rate for runs it tells me I am amazing avg over 180 the whole time.... When my chest strap is working I might get to 185 but the avg for a HARD run is usually under 170.

Good job getting in some exercise with kiddo around. I've been there, and you sometimes have to get creative and it doesn't always work as planned, but you're not using it as an excuse to do what you can, and that's great3 -

Has anyone got experience of running in Hoka One One Speedgoat 4's? I'm thinking of changing my trail shoes and my usual shoes are Decathlon which I have used the same brand for almost 3 years.
They have been good up until now but at 288g are a bit heavy and my toes are now hurting in them.
I've not run in Hoka's before, but have read good reviews. But equally I would like to know if they are rubbish as they are not cheap.0 -

My apple watch always has my heart rate way high, and my hubs is constantly like how are you not dead. LOL. I'm not sure they've perfected the science on it quite yet.2 -
Not sure about Apple watches, but with Garmin wrist HR monitors when you get unusually high HR (like 180 or so), many times it is falsely locked onto your cadence (it's called cadence lock). Sometimes it clears up on its own during the run, but not always.
6 miles tonight. Had to wait until after work to get my run in today. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, especially for a Monday 😏

I got up early to make the most of the glorious morning. Summer's on its way!!! The kids are on the trampoline with the sprinkler going, and I'm about to head out into the garden.8

Re Hoka shoes. It is really individual preference. I bought a pair about two years ago and I thought they were the cats meow. But when I tried a second pair I no longer liked them. They have a nice comfy toebox but the lift is not as high as some of the other shoes I wear. Maybe you could get some and try them and return them if you didn’t like them.
I don’t know why but this happens to me a lot. The very first pair of Mizuno‘s I ever bought I just love the heck out of. But I could never get a repeat on that model.
However for speed nothing runs as fast for me as a Nike. They don’t wear well and I have to replace them a lot more frequently than I would like but I believe that is because the materials are very light and not as durable.3 -
Thanks @SummerSkier. I'll try and find ones that have a 30 day return offer, if I do get them. I'm also looking at Salomon Wildcross 2, which look like they have a lot of grip and are quite light.2

I'm up to a 28 minute run now, which was this morning.
That was 3.54 km.
So happy I'm getting closer to 5K.10 -

I don’t know how it compares to the wildcross but I love my Salomon speedcross- I think they are pretty much the opposite of a Hoka though! They have zero cushion and are pretty stiff. What I like about them is they are super luggy and grip really well especially in mud. The downsides are Salomons run tight in the forefoot, and the big lugs are not good on roots because they tend to catch if you drag a foot. For trails with a lot of roots I like my Altra timps. Not sure I would want to do an ultra in the timps though as they are zero drop and hard on the tendons.3 -
Thanks for the info @rheddmobile. Buying shoes online is always a challenge as I don't have any proper running shoe shops close to me. As always, it's going to be a case of trial and error.0

Speedgoat 4 have been my favorite trail runner of the past two years. I run and I do long hikes in them. Very comfortable! I was hesitant to try Hoka because I heard they run narrow but I really like them.1 -

Had so much fun volunteering at the trail race on Saturday. Got there around 6:20 am after driving through fog so thick I could hardly see 10 feet in front of me. I turned on the road where the cavern is located (race went into a cavern at the end), I had to drive on the left side of the road so I could see where the line broke for the turn. I did packet pickup then ran out of the aid station in in the woods. These race directors are great and had like 4 volunteers, honestly 4. The guy who did packet pick up with me ran to the finish so he could help out there. After the race I hauled everything to the street and went and got my car to bring it all to the finish, earned myself a nice t-shirt LOL. I have to tell you a nice story though, girl coming towards me in the 15K is holding this winter mittens (like snow mittens) we are in Alabama folks, since it’s like mile 3 I said do you want me to take them, she gives them to me but of course I never see her after the race because she’s out in the front pack. I posted on our local running pages to see if I can find her, sure enough I hear from her and we agree to meet in between our houses so I can return them. She brought me a Starbucks gift card, how nice was that!!!
@SummerSkier glad you didn’t have any bad side effects from the booster.
@ssseattle don’t worry about not running yet, take care of your foot and hang out with us until you are able to run.
@johnisrunning I like to run in the colder weather, it’s just getting out the door, once I’m out I’m good…however, I HATE the wind ugh.
@kgirlhart Congratulations on a great race!! Case of beer!! Dang I was excited at a race when I won 12 cases of Coke products. The quilt is beautiful. Great pictures

@martaindale great job on the HM. I keep threatening to run one of those Disney races. Hollywood Tower, my most favorite! I’d have to look at my Hoka trail shoes, to be honest I HATE them, I’ve had them a few years and only wear them if it’s really muddy and a shorter run. I’ll have to remember to look at them, honestly in like 4 miles my knees hurt. I bet they have 25 miles on them. Skip wears Hoka on the roads and loves them, again I just tried them on and said no thanks. @sweetdaisy13 I wear Salomon Sense trail shoes and love them to death.
@mshawski a girl on my street has like 3 babies under 4, when I’m coming back from my run she is running up and down our street, over and over. It’s about .35 or .4 up and back, but she’s making it work while the girls are still sleeping.

I think Hoka's really require a try-on. I did a treadmill test in a pair and they were not for me. The curved sole felt weird and unstable to me but I know several people who LOVE them. If you order them directly from Hoka will they let you return them after a run or 2? Brooks has a 90 day policy so they are lower commitment if you have to buy an unknown shoe online. FWIW, I use Brooks cascadia trail shoes and find them to be very comfortable though a bit longer in the toe box than my usual ghosts.2 -
9 Nov total 56.93 out of 150 goal. 227.43 left for run the year so need to avg 4.374 the rest of the year to complete on time. I am slightly ahead but you never know when another URI is going to keep me off the roads. (I don't mind snow but ice is too dangerous).

Technical issues resolved. And that's an interesting thought about the watch picking up cadence vs hr. I don't think the Apple watch does that. I think it just runs too high. Chest strap is much more accurate. Fitbit actually matched the chest strap pretty closely so whatever they use for HR is probably a more accurate algorythm for running hr.A question for the group as the year winds down. Have you reviewed the running goals you set in Jan for the year and how close are you to reaching them?

Unless some kind of miracle happens, my honest assessment is that my stated goals are toast.
I was having a complete snit last January - so over Covid and Covid life - and said that my goal was just to stay alive with all the people I love staying alive and unexpecting anything else seemed unfair. Knock on wood, so far so good. Although both my husband and mother have had major health crises.
This is the first year since becoming a runner that I am going to finish the year in worse shape than the year before. But considering the stress I’m under I feel like a gd rock star!8 -
I'm just going to claim that since I didn't start running again until March that I didn't have any goals for the year, and blame that for not meeting any goals from the start of the year since they didn't exist at the start of the year!
I still haven't been fully convinced yet though.
But I'm working on that still. 🤪7
