Been reading and liking/hugging as needed. You guys are doing great with your runs!
@skippygirlsmom I think the race you volunteered at is one that I would love to run at some point. It just sounds so unique. Too bad I didn't do it this year, we could have me in real person. Great story about the young lady and her mittens.
You are a rock star @rheddmobile !
I don't recall what my goals for the year were. I'll have to go back and look, but I think they were to get through my open heart surgery and run the AF HM. There may have been more in there, but those two I did complete.
I went to the chiropractor again today for an assessment of my lumbar strength, now that the back is doing mostly better. The tests were not what I was expecting at all. He did two. The first was to see how long it took me to stand up straight and sit back down 5 times. I did it in 15 seconds, which is in the excellent category. The next one however, was a different story. I laid on my stomach, raised my legs, and held them there as long as I could. When he said that was the test, I knew it wasn't going to be good. I don't think I have ever been able to do that. I was able to hold them for 19 seconds. I actually thought that was pretty good, but he said that is in the "extremely poor" category. I should be able to hold it for 90 seconds. I have a long way to go for that. He gave me some more stretches and exercises to do and will see him again on Thursday to discuss the plan for moving ahead. I don't know why they don't schedule enough time for that on the day you go, but I think he assesses in the evening and then is ready to discuss later. If any of you are willing to give it a try, I'd love to know how long you can hold up your legs. Just curious if I am really that bad.
I did a mile walk on the driveway after I got home from work. Keeping the streak alive.

My wife and I gave ourselves another year of chiropractic aftercare for Christmas.4 -
@quilteryoyo when I read your description of the leg raise test I thought "challenge accepted" even before I finished reading your post.
So I laid on my stomach, lifted my legs and started the timer. Ended up at 2 minutes 50 sec. That is deceivingly difficult and a good glute exercise. I might add it into leg day 😏. Thanks for the tip!5 -
I'm so behind, so I'm missing a ton of people's accomplishments I know. I liked and hugged more!
@kgirlhart on your PR and age group win! Wow! So awesome
@sweetdaisy13 fantastic and congrats on your 50k PR!
@martaindale great job on the Wine and Dine PR. I have a friend who did it this year and have heard from her and others a bit about what they are like. Very impressive to run well in that race.

I'm way behind for this month already. 3 days without running, and no runs over 3.2 miles. Pretty sad but it is what it is. I'll have to check on my goals for the year. I know I didn't set a mileage goal or a time goal. But I'm still on track to run a HM a month. If I can get November sorted out!2 -
Wow @Scott6255 . So, I guess my 19 seconds is pretty sad! It is deceptively hard. And, you are welcome.

And now, the hike report: Big Slide Mountain for #46 of 46 Adirondack High Peaks (> 4000 feet)
(Spoilered for length, and dramatic highs and lows)The final hike of the 46 happened to fall on a picture perfect day on Sunday Nov 7. We had a group of 6 of us, all of whom had hiked another friend's 46th peak almost exactly a year earlier. I feel extremely lucky that this November day arrived without a cloud in the sky and temps in the 30s-40s on the mountain. It was frosty to start but as soon as we had hiked 20 minutes, I was taking off my jacket. There was a dusting of snow and some ice at higher elevation, in the shadows. We had to put on our micropikes evenutally to navigate some icy patches.
The way up to the summit was amazing. One of my favorite hikes of all of them. The views were incredible, and there were some fun rock scrambles to climb up, but nothing too grueling. We could see mountains in all directions that we had previously climbed. So cool to see from the vantage point of "I've climbed all of those!" We had to climb over 3 smaller peaks called "The Brothers" on the way up - First Brother, Second Brother, Third Brother. Each one had a great view. Then we get to near the summit of Big Slide and we negotiated some ladders and more ice on the way up. And a lookout spot where we could see the big rock slide that gives the mountain its name. But fortunately we didn't have to climb that, because it's very steep!
One of my friends went ahead with my phone so he could take pictures and video and he captured the moment of me reaching the top and then my friends joining. It was kind of a surreal moment to both think how incredible it was and then "this is it? It's done?" We stayed up there for a while and ate and I just marveled at all the surrounding mountains that I had climbed. There is a lot of talk in facebook forums about pine martens that hang out at this summit and come out and try to steal food. My friend who got up there first saw them! And he took a pic with my phone! But the rest of us didn't get to see them because they ran away and didn't come back out with all the commotion.
After we hung out a while hoping in vain the pine martens would come back, we started back down. Here's where things went wrong. One of my friends who has only hiked 3 high peaks and doesn't really enjoy it - he's just there to be supportive on these special last hikes - always wants to get down really fast. He's ready for it to be over. So he started hustling down, and one other friend was with him. I realized quickly that they would pretty quickly come to a junction and wasn't sure they knew what to do. We had decided on the way up that we would take a different route down, making it a loop rather than an out and back. A little longer route by distance but easier. He had definitely heard that discussion, but whether he would recognize the junction and take the right route was unclear. The friend who went with him was waiting for us at the junction, but she had lost him before that. We were unsure which trail he had taken and sent someone down a ways of each one running quickly to try to find him or evidence that he had gone that way. We didn't see him but the out and back way we saw people coming up and they had not seen anyone. We decided to all go down the loop trail, based on that and a possible footprint in the mud that could be his very big boot. I did not feel good about this and really wanted us to split up, but we decided he was 90% likely to have taken this route. We kept trying to text/call (no service) and yell ahead, but no response. The trail had several places that would have been easy to make a wrong turn and it was increasingly worrisome that we weren't seeing him. We moved quickly and decided at this point we just had to get to the parking lot and if he wasn't there, split up and search.
It took us 4 hours to get down and we didn't see him the whole time. I was nauseous with worry because he did not have the app to navigate on his phone, his phone was probably dead from listening to music the whole time, he has the least experience hiking and had little water and food with him. I was angry also that he took off and didn't wait for us at the junction or anywhere else. About 2 miles from the end, we ran into 2 hunters and they told us they heard someone yelling "hello, hello" and possibly "help" and had come down from the ridge to try to find the person. You can hear sound better going up and you can't hear when you are lower than the person yelling so that made it hard. The hunters suggested where they though the yelling had come from and they looped one way and 3 of us looped the other to try to search that area. One friend and I continued on to the parking lot to be there and to have cell service. We exchanged phone numbers with the hunters so we could connect and we were starting to get spotty service so we hoped this would work.
My friend and I walked about 25-30 minutes and I realized I had a voicemail on my phone. It was someone saying "I saw your friend" and they had pointed him across a bridge to the trail to the parking lot. I thought this was the hunter guys and I called back and fortunately got someone on the line. He told me basically the same thing and I asked if my friend had actually gotten on the right trail and he said he thought so but I didn't have a reference for where he was saying he was. I called my other friends and relayed the message and said I had talked to the hunter guys and they saw him. She said "the hunter guys are with us" and they didn't call you, so it was actually someone else my friend had run into! We had no real idea where he was but it sounded like he had been close to getting back to the parking area so we hustled up the last half mile or so to get there. And we were almost there and heard his big booming voice yell out to us. OMG. The relief and emotions. I called our other friends and said "he's here!" and they were so relieved and started back as well. It was after 4 pm and starting to get dusky in the woods (the time had just changed) so the possibility of this all going very wrong was very, very real.
The whole hike took 8 hours 20 minutes for me. I waited to officially sign out of the register until we all came out of the woods and that was a bit later. The hunters came out with my friends and they were the nicest guys. They had committed to helping us search if he had not been at the car and had so much knowledge of these woods and mountains. I am so grateful to them and a few others we ran into who gave us helpful info, and the guy who called me on my friend's behalf.
So, I'm still recovering from the wild emotions of this hike. The way up was the most amazing experience and I was putting it in the running for my favorite hike overall. Summiting my 46th peak on this perfect day was something I will not forget. The second half of the hike I would like to forget. I am still angry that he didn't wait for the group and put us all through that, but I am so happy he didn't give up and didn't lose his wits (he did get off the correct trail and had ended up across the river on a service road). There are many lessons to be learned from this. I hope we all learned them.
And that is The End of this journey. I am a 46er. I hiked 21 trips and over 230 hours. I don't have the mileage added up because it tends to be so inaccurate but it was a lot. I started in September 2019 with 2 peaks, not really intending to do more. Then didn't hike again until June 2020, and that's when it all took off. 23 peaks between June and November 2020, and then 21 peaks between June and November 2021.
As always, a few pics of the amazing views. If you read the report, you won't be surprised that there are no pics from the way down.8 -
Maybe 30 seconds. def poor hamstring glute muscle.1
-
@katharmonic What an adventure! Such gorgeous scenery! Yes, let's forget about the way down. Well done on your 46!
Have you thought of your next hiking challenge?1 -
November Goal: 100 Miles
11/2: 4.03 miles
11/4: 4.04 miles
11/6: 13.18 miles
11/9: 5.10 miles
26.35/100 miles completed for November
Thanks @skippygirlsmom and @katharmonic and congratulations on completing your 46 peaks. That is an amazing achievement.
@quilteryoyo I was able to do the leg test for 1 minute 42 seconds. I might have been able to go a little longer if I had used a yoga mat instead of just laying on the rug.
I got out for my first run since the race today and it was a great run. I didn't have a plan other than to run easy and it was really nice to just run for fun. I kept it slow and easy and felt really good. The weather was just great for running. I saw a little family of deer near the park. It was dark but starting to lighten up a little as I headed home. I bought a new Noxgear vest last week. I really loved my first Noxgear 360 but this new vest is even better.
2021 Races:
4/24/21: Run For The Children - 10K PR 55:46:28.
11/6/21: Run For 57th AHC Half Marathon - PR 2:07:11 and 1st in AG5 -
Hate to tell you this @quilteryoyo, but I got to 5 minutes and change (I got the shakes at 4:20). All credit to yoga for this, where we usually have to lift the upper body as well, which is a killer.
Great for your glutes, and and excellent way to warm up and ‘switch them on’ before a run.5 -
@sweetdaisy13 - I am also not a Hoka fan - they are just too cushioned for me and I always feel like I am going to fall over or twist an ankle in them. But then I prefer more minimal shoes. My favorites are from Topo Athletics and like Ultra have the wider toe box but a narrower heel. The ones I wear are 0 drop but they have others that have more. The trail shoes are pretty grippy without the lugs being too big that they could make you trip, but I mostly wear them for running agility on lumpy, slippery grass. They do have a 30 day 'risk free' return policy so you can try them out a few times.
@SummerSkier - I haven't looked at my goals and am not sure I want to. I know one of mine was to stay injury free and well that just hasn't happen. I also have run all of three times I think this month with all the packing and moving we are doing, so it will be one of the lowest months for me in years, even when I was injured. My distance goals are not even close to being obtainable.
On the Apple Watch - mine has been pretty good for a while and just recently, maybe since the last watch OS update, it has been giving me really weird HR numbers that I know are not correct. I can't wear a HRM any longer with my pacemaker but I also know where my HR is from the PM because it is mostly controlling it (pacing 85% of the time). My max HR is set to 150 and while it can theoretically go higher it will attempt to keep at or below 150 - so seeing 170+ is unreasonable. I am hoping there will be a new watch OS update to go along with the iOS 15 update on the phone and that it will improve with that.3 -
@quilteryoyo if I understood the exercise (laying flat on stomach, lifting legs up without bending them), then I made it 13 seconds 😆 and then my quad touched the floor and I figured that meant I was disqualified. I've done a similar exercise where arms are lifted too, and that one I can do longer.
@katharmonic CONGRATULATIONS on reaching your big goal! That's amazing. I do have a few choice words for your friend, but will keep them to myself.
I came down with something over the weekend and am slowly getting better. So I'm not running, and am going to miss tomorrow's Independence Day mountain 11k. I'm disappointed but know it's the wise thing to do.4 -
So work seems to lurch from one chaotic episode to another. Our EMEA CEO has returned to the Netherlands and I can start to plan. I noticed since both my children were home that has drained my time significantly so I probably needs to have a chat over dinner and point out I am getting back to where I was a couple of years ago able to focus and ready to be p****d off with people who interfered with my plans.
Wishing you a speedy recovery @polskagirl01

So I bought a hip thrust machine and it arrived yesterday - it’s basically a foldable angled bench with attachments for bands. It’s a one-trick pony but it was really on sale, and since I used to do hip thrust in the smith machine at the gym I haven’t been doing it much lately at home, hate balancing a barbell on my hips. And I tried my new thingy out at various angles, etc. a bunch yesterday with the result that I can do @quilteryoyo ‘s test a grand total of zero seconds today! Haha my butt gave up it’s dead now!
No seriously, I tried it again later and could go 27 seconds before starting to shake. I will try again tomorrow after a night’s rest. How are you supposed to put your arms, out in front like a Superman, down beside you, or bent?3 -
11-1 7k easy

11-3 7k slow
11-4 4k slow

November Total: 67k
November Goal: 180k
Foggy and low 40s F today. Fog burned off during the run and it's going to be yet another beautiful day before the snow arrives later in the week.
Had the strangest niggle today. At times (especially downslope) it felt like my left leg was wanting to collapse underneath me. Must be something pressing on the sciatic nerve. But I've still got my "no rest November" going.
@katharmonic I've been waiting for your report. Congratulations on a great accomplishment.
@quilteryoyo I'm afraid to even try that test, and if I did, I'd have to report my honest result. I think if my chiro told me to do that I'd start looking for a new chiropractor.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)

40 minutes easy, then weightlifting today. Felt a little better than the last few days as the fatigue is just about behind me. Tomorrow might be my last bit of speedwork (aside from strides) before the half on the 20th.

@katharmonic Congratulations on hiking all 46 peaks. You look so happy. I would be too. Fantastic views. I'm glad it was a picture perfect day on the way up. Sorry about your friend but glad he was okay in the end. I do hope he learned his lesson and thank goodness for all of those who helped search for him and get him out before dark.
@kgirlhart Nice run. You did excellent on the challenge. I guess I do have a lot of work to do.
@ContraryMaryMary Wow! That is amazing! Maybe yoga is the key.
@SummerSkier Looks like we both have some work to do.
@polskagirl01 Yes. Sounds like you did the exercise correctly. The doctor put his hand under my knee and called it when my knee went down. It's interesting that you can do the "superman/superwoman" pose longer. I hope you are feeling some better today. So sorry about missing your race.
@TheMrWobbly That dinner chat sounds like it is needed. Hope it goes well and you can get back to doing what you want to do.
@rheddmobile Hahaha I can imagine after a tough workout that zero would be the result. I was laying on a bench and had my arms down...hanging over the bench and holding on to the hand rests....if that makes sense. It was a chiropractor bench. So, having them either to your sides or in front of you flat on the floor is probably right....maybe whatever is most comfortable, but not up in the air.
@Tramboman Sounds like a great run. And....expecting snow? I'm not ready for that yet. Hahaha about not trying the exercise.
Nice running @johnisrunning . Good luck on your upcoming half.
Okay. So, reading all of the comments and your experiences with the leg lift, I learned something. It really is my back that is the issue and needs strengthening. I didn't even feel the exercise in my glutes. I had to stop solely because my lower back muscles starting to hurt and gave out. So, thank you for that. I'll be sure to tell the chiropractor that when I see him tomorrow....which I am sure is the point of the test. BTW, he is a runner, so that helps.
Amazing @AlphaHowls . How is your mom doing?3 -
Yesterday was my rest day.
Today, 5.2 miles through the Forbidden Forest. Perfect 45°F.
50.8 miles of the 165 mile goal.3 -

Good days and bad, she sleeps a great deal more now. Her hands have locked up, making it difficult to hold or do tasks (motor skills). We have an appointment on 22nd to see the kidney specialist. I have my brother coming this weekend. He has not seen her since July 2020 (except in video chats). My heart breaks a little more every day.

@katharmonic - I waited until this morning to read your report and I am so glad I did! What an awesome accomplishment. The pictures are fantastic and you do look so happy! Where are the pine martins? I was hoping for that picture as I have never seen one. I would have been so angry with that friend. I hope he was at least apologetic, understanding what he put you all through.
@AlphaHowls - sending you {{{HUGS}}} It is so hard watching someone you love decline. It will be a shock for your brother even having seen her in video chats.
@quilteryoyo - I tried it too before I went to bed last night (on the bed) and couldn't do it for long either. I need to do it on the floor and when I am not physically exhausted. I always find it so amazing how interconnected every part of our body is and how an issue in one area will cause weakness or an issue somewhere else.1 -
I wanted to hit 5 miles today, but my body was not feeling it. 4 it was.
November mileage:
R: 19.5/60

@katharmonic Wow, that is an amazing accomplishment! Congratulations! Pictures are great.
@AlphaHowls sorry you and your family are going through this hard time. Very difficult to watch your parent fade like that. Hugs to you, your Mom, and family2 -
@AlphaHowls - I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. Hugs to you and your family.

Wow I was reading the mountain hiking adventure on the downhill and my heart was really racing. I am SO glad your friend was found safe and sound and the photos are absolutely amazing!
Does anyone else track VO2max and HRV on a regular basis? I find it interesting but I know some of the calculations are based on age so regardless of fitness since I am "old" I never really get excellent #s.3 -

@quilteryoyo that cavern has several races, one is a 5K all road, there’s a 5K/15K all trail and I think he’s working on a HM all trail. They are fun races. I don’t think I could hold my legs like that 90 seconds, I’ll have to try it.
@katharmonic what a story and as usual amazing pictures. Okay I would have punched him in the face LOL
@AlphaHowls thinking of your family and praying for your mom.

@quilteryoyo Took the challenge and clocked in at 4:02. And now my glutes are burning! I would be interested to see how I would do on a bench. Just lifting your legs is weird laying flat on the floor so I was also kinda lifting my shoulders.
@katharmonic That's so cool and such an accomplishment. I'm glad your friend was ok and hopefully he learned a valuable lesson.
@AlphaHowls Hugs to your family. That is such a tough situation.

Nov total: 23.6/70 miles
11/2: 2.2 miles
11/3: 3.1 miles
11/5: 2.1 miles
11/7: 14 miles
11/10: 2.2 miles
Did my first post-race run this morning. The soreness in my calves is mostly gone. My legs still felt a little heavy this morning but I expect will feel fine by this weekend. It was a little warmer today and very foggy. That super thick fog that just makes you damp.
I've done ok on my goals. I feel like I peaked for the year with running at the beginning of the year and I'm not sure if I will be back to that level of fitness by years end. But, I'm not in a bad position. Just prioritized things a bit differently this year. Aside from June, I ran consistently. I think not having races on the calendar affected me more this year. I will run some even without a race, but training is usually when my mileage ramps up, and without races I didn't really train.
Goals for 2021:
1. PR my HM - Done on 1/1.
2. Run more this summer than I did last. The heat in Houston really saps my energy, but I'm thinking baby steps. Increase each run by 0.5-1 mile. Slowly build up what I am capable of in the heat. Nope. 114 miles this summer (June-Aug) compared with 178 last summer. To be fair, I took all of June off. I'll have to try again next summer.
3. Climb a V5 - my current best is V4 and usually I'm a solid V3. - nope. I have not climbed that much this year compared to previous years. I'm enjoying it but not really grade chasing.
4. Climb a 5.12a/b - my current best is 5.11c/d and it wasn't pretty. The step up to 5.12 is HUGE. But, I heavily prefer sport climbing, so I'm hopeful. - nope but closer on this one than the bouldering goal.
5. Above all - stay healthy!! I've been lucky so far with no serious injuries. So, I need to do what I can to keep myself healthy. So far, so good. Some minor things, but overall been pretty healthy.

I wonder if your back is hurting because you’re not primarily using your glutes for this exercise? Maybe they’re not switching on and you’re using your back instead. My bum was on fire by the end of my session, followed by burning hamstrings. No pain in back at all, but that would kick in if I was also lifting my upper body (which is why I’m amazed that @polskagirl finds the full body version easier - it’s a real killer). It’ll be interesting to hear what your chiro says.

Thank you so much @Orphia , @kgirlhart @polskagirl01 @Tramboman @quilteryoyo @shanaber @Scott6255 and @martaindale! I am still kind of processing the experience to be honest, but it's a huge deal to me that I'm finally done after so much time and hard work.
@shanaber I forgot the pine marten pic! Can you see him here on the rock? Edited to add - can't get spoiler tags to work in this new format?

Today I had to go down to main campus and get a random COVID test. I changed into running stuff before I went and intended to run on campus before it got dark. It wasn't that cold for running but I wasn't dressed warmly enough for the walk over to the testing place and got chilled. So I was really not wanting to run and was having a real hard time time myself into it. And then I walked right past the new (ish, last couple of years) multi-million dollar campus gym/health center that I have never been to and saw those treadmills staring right at me and I went in. It's very nice! And free for me.
As I was running the 3 miles, I was overlooking the rock wall which I have wanted to check out since it opened. It's small but again, free. I haven't been climbing for almost two years now and I thought no time like the present to just try it out again. I went down there and checked out some shoes and bless the students' hearts who work there for explaining how everything works to an old professor like myself who has never set foot in the gym before. I gave a few routes a try and found I was terribly out of practice and my grip really felt it. But I was able to do a little more than I expected after so long and I definitely got the bug to go back again. I want to go back to my regular climbing gym with more options but this (free) option will be nice to kind of warm up to it. I have a student who works there so I'll tell her I went and maybe she'll meet me there and help me out in getting back into it.
Definitely happy that I randomly dropped in and this will be a good indoor option this winter when I need it. It doesn't hurt that I have a fancy special parking pass so dropping in at the end of the day is pretty easy.
