Did an easy 5 miles on the trails this morning. My Mizuno Wave Kazans are starting to wear holes on the upper, so I grabbed my wife's Hoka trail shoes (yes, we wear the same size shoe ). She has some physical limitations that are preventing her from trail running and these shoes are nearly brand new. They didn't feel too bad. I think they were a little slick on the leaves and pine straw, but were fine on roots and rocks. I got a bit of a hot spot on my right big toe, but I think I can live with it. I felt like they didn't have much support, which I confirmed when I got home. They didn't have any insoles in them! So, I grabbed the insoles from another pair of her unused Hokas and I'll give them another go, maybe tomorrow.

On Sunday, I ran the Cade’s Cove Loop Lope which is a 10-mile route through Cade’s Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains. It’s a course with lots of ups and downs (aka hills). It was 30F at the start with a very heavy frost. This year, the race organizers did not have an official start to prevent a large group congregating. Instead, they opened the start line at 7:00 am and runners could start anytime between 7 and 7:30. I usually see black bears on this route or at least in the parking area/picnic grounds but we didn’t see any so maybe they are already hibernating. I was captain of the struggle bus for this race. I looked at my Garmin at 3.22 miles and didn’t think I could muster the energy to even finish but I kept plodding along. I’m not sure what my problem was other than maybe too much traveling and running leading up to the race. In any event, I finished it with a time of 1:56 and a place of 30 out of 63 runners in my age group. After a nice warm shower and quick snack, my friend and I hiked the Appalachian Trail for about 5 miles.
Great job on your Homecoming 5K @marisap2010!
Congratulations on your half @katharmonic – great time! Good luck with your presentation!
I missed that you were injured @Scott6255. Hope you heal quickly.
I love your afghan ministry @julieannegannon. Beautiful work!
Congratulations on the Battleship 12K @skippygirlsmom! That’s a very long bridge!

I think I am finally caught up. I have given lots of hugs and likes but probably won't be able to personally respond to everyone. I will try to do better going forward.
Yesterday I ran 3.14 miles. It's the "Don't Hug a Runner Yet " challenge from RTE so I have been running (or walking) at least a 5K every day. Yesterday was pretty chilly in the morning at 42°F feels like 40° and I ran in shorts and a t-shirt with sleeves and gloves. Today it was 58°F and I wore shorts and a tank top. I was pretty comfortable both days.

As far as the zero drop shoes. I hate them also. I won't run in them. But..... when my shins are acting up I will wear completely flat shoes around the house until they feel better. So really my recommendation was not for ever more just until your shins feel better and you can wear the shoes you like.
When my hips act up changing the angle the other way also works... wearing heels.

So a weird thing happened. Sunday night my right ankle started hurting. Like painful to walk. I was limping. I couldn't think of anything that had happened that day. I later figured out that during my Saturday run there was a spot I forgot the sidewalk was higher and came done pretty hard. I am pretty sure that was my right foot. So yesterday I woke up and still limping. I had to be in the office yesterday so I could only elevate it at lunch. I also elevated and iced after I got home even though it had stopped hurting at that point.
With all that said, I skipped yesterday's run and did it this morning. Another 4 miles

@RunsOnEspresso That is weird! At least it worked itself out quickly.
@julieannegannon Such a pretty blanket!
@Teresa502 Good job sticking through the tough course. It sucks to show up to race day and just not feel it.
@skippygirlsmom Good job on your race. I'm so impressed with your recovery given how bad that injury was. And that is the straightest race course I have ever seen!2 -
Short 3.5 mile run to redeem myself after a dreadful run yesterday. I was faster today with an average pace of 9:23 min per mile.

I left work early today and had time to get out for a trail run with Stella before dark. It was pretty muddy and slow going but we slogged our way through.
Pictures don't really do it justice but the sun starting to go down created this amazing effect where the tops of the trees were lit up bright orange above the horizon line and dark below in a straight line below that.10 -
@katharmonic very pretty pictures, I bet it was even prettier in real life.
@quilteryoyo and others who asked - I was sick, along with the rest of my family and some of our friends. Everyone stayed home, and it appears to have been more than just a bad cold. We did test, to make sure it was safe to return to society, and are now negative. Still tired though. And there's a ringing in my ears that comes & goes.
I met up last night with some girls from run club who typically do more walking with light jogging mixed in. We got in 4k at the track while chatting. I could probably run, but at this point maybe I'm just lazy. I think it will be better to err on the side of laziness though, rather than risking overdoing it.8 -

this made me laugh. I hate waking up with something hurting and having NO idea what the heck I did. I like to blame it on the cat. Glad you are OK tho. Sometimes when I do something like you mention stepping down to hard I try to mentally make a note to myself so I can remember the next day why I have a bruise or something hurts. I banged the heck out of my hip a few years ago on a door edge and altho I did not think it was a significant injury it ended up leaving a lump there that still remains. I guess I could go to an ortho but it doesn't hurt and it doesn't interfere with my running so I don't bother.4 -

Oh I think you are right to err on the side of safety. So sorry you and your family got sick. Hope that recover is swift and the tintinitus disappears quickly....1 -

This week I am officially switching over to the HH intermediate HM plan to prep for my HM in January. This is the first real speed work I have done in a while. My plan leading up to the November race was mostly just about mileage as I needed to rebuild my base.
Today was a 35 min tempo run. I was targeting a 9:45 min/mile pace. This run taught me that I have totally forgotten what paces feel like. I have been running my feel/effort for almost a year and my body has lost that muscle memory. A bit of my tempo run was incorporated into my warm up and cool down but the 3 miles in the middle were pure tempo miles and clocked in at 9:29, 9:37, and 9:33. So a bit faster than intended. But it felt pretty good and I didn’t drop off at the end.9 -

@katharmonic - Love the pictures! If you can and the weather permits while you are in DC you should go for a run on the Mall. When we were there for my niece's graduation it became a favorite place to run!
@RunsOnEspresso - I hope your ankle is feeling better! I too have all kinds of unexplained bruises! I mostly blame Hobbes the Vizsla 😁
@martaindale - I am sure over that year your pace has improved as you have been so consistent with your running and workouts. Now you just need to adjust to your new normal tempo pace!
@polskagirl01 - I remember you thought you were coming down with something. Did you test positive for covid? I know they are reporting pretty bad outbreaks of the flu here now too.
@Teresa502 - sorry your race was a struggle but glad you were able to finish it! Sounds like it was a pretty good day with the hike afterwards.
Our weather and temps are finally improving (no longer in the 90s! YAY!!) however with the change in pressure allowing that temp drop I have a horrible sinus headache. I am sitting here all dressed to run hoping it will abate some so I can head out and enjoy a cooler run. Need to get back to my normal running/working out schedule!

Today's run was 5 miles. I'm getting there, albeit slowly. I need to work on getting a bit faster, and hills - though all of my go to running trails are quite flat (I'm not a fan of running on the roads since I tend to space out when I run in a way that does not make me feel safe around cars).November mileage:

Follow up to my post where you may note my average heartrate was 181 for that 5 miles. My apple watch says I hit 203 during the 4th mile (which was my slowest). I think my apple watch is drunk. LOL.3

Are you having problems with cadence lock? My husband was freaking out that his watch said 170s on basically an easy run which felt easy, and I’m almost certain it was cadence lock, since he has no heart rate data for the walk previous and then it jumps up to 160-170 and stays there the entire run. When your cadence is similar to a heart rate and your watch isn’t getting a good heart rate because your watch is loose or something it can mistakenly latch on to your heart rate.
Your cadence is actually slower than that, though, so hmm.0 -
Apple watch heart rate while running. Not accurate. Always extremely high. It's why I went to a chest strap. Work has been REALLY stressful lately with supply chain being awful and a new customer who pretends that is not happening. Thank goodness for running. Or I would be on BP meds for sure!

10k on Sunday at the park around the lake - soooo many people. And all of them with no trail etiquette whatsoever. “On your left,” elicits no movement, just people slowly trudging four and five abreast, like herbivores grazing. Sometimes they would stop, all across the path. And turn to look at you, like “What?” as you were forced off trail and ran around them through the rough. Ugh I shouldn’t be rude but I don’t understand how it’s possible to walk so slowly. I used to be obese with bad knees but I didn’t walk that slowly! And everyone was doing it, it’s like there was some sort of family challenge slow walk contest at the park.
The colors are finally starting here, but it’s still not really turning. I can’t remember fall coming this late before! Despite all the poky walkers everywhere we saw dozens of deer. And the walkers were oblivious to the deer as well! An entire family of deer crossed in front of one family - within twenty feet - and they just ambled on talking. I said, hey, do you see the deer? And the family jumps out of their skin at the deer, they really had no idea there were half a dozen large animals right in front of them!
Lifted heavy on Monday, including new leg extensions and hip thrusts. I have discovered I can use the hip thrust machine to do leg extensions as well!
So started Tues with tired legs, went to Chuckalissa which is not for people with tired legs. The theory was to run Chuckalissa “easy” which considering that the loop is exhausting just as a walk is a funny idea. But! We did it, we are getting more fit. We ran more than we walked, and never really got winded except after the three big hills. Ran most of the downhills. After being so worried about falling on the downhill I caught a root and almost fell on the flat. Did not fall, much cursing however. My husband also caught his foot and turned his ankle on the flat. With more fallen leaves, the tricky going is trickier than before.
We passed another couple at Chuckalissa, which is the first time that’s happened. I am local legend on Strava out there at the moment which considering we run it once every one or two weeks means not many people run there. So the first we know of the couple is this woman shouting at us, “Stay right there! Don’t come any closer!” We dutifully stop, wondering what sort of trail hazard is around the curve, and it’s her dog which is off leash. Husband trying to catch the dog, mostly grown golden retriever puppy which is delighted and having none of it. Lady keeps shouting and freaking out as if her dog is going to maul us if not caught, meanwhile the dog, which keeps looking at us and wagging, is getting freaked out by her reaction and starts jumping around and dashing at us then running back. Okay I get it, your dog is not socialized and isn’t supposed to be off leash here, but this is really really NOT the way to socialize the dog. Husband finally catches the dog and the woman tells him to take the dog off the trail so we can pass. We say thank you. Husband heads a few feet off trail, did I mention this was at Chuckalissa? Land of abrupt declivities and dangerous slopes, where if you trip and step a foot off path you will never be seen again? So this couple are maybe in their sixties, look fit for hiking but not young people, and this dog by this point is very jumpy and yanks the guy off his feet, and he starts tumbling straight down a gully overhanging a huge drop off. Stopped by a tree, about thirty feet down. We yell “Are you okay? Can you get back on the trail?” Lady yells, “Just keep going, get out of here!” and heads off trail towards them and starts sliding too. Guy says, “I think I’m okay…” There is no easy way back up from where he is. Everything soft and slick with leaves too. Wife still yelling at us to leave, now also sliding down. So, we left them, as requested, but we did mention they existed and where they were to the ranger station on our way out. I hope they are okay. And I sort of hope that guy gives his wife an earful after they are both safe.

BTW my Strava is still being super weird compared to my husband’s- calling miles extremely fast. And this time I think I know why. Top is my husband’s data with first mile highlighted in blue. Bottom is my data, same first “mile” (actually only .67 of a mile according to his data) highlighted in blue. You can see how mine is extremely jaggy. I don’t know why it suddenly started doing this or how to get it to stop, but it’s getting worse! By the end of 10k my data said 8 miles. So that’s a whole third of a mile off per mile.3
-
@SummerSkier - What chest strap do you use?0
-
I use the Polar as they have extra small. It syncs pretty well with the watch bluetooth most of the time.. but there are others which do and are a little cheaper. Only issue is the strap is too large for me.1

I have had this happen a few times with strava over the years, with and without a synced watch. It’s usually a GPS tracking issue but it can be on your watch or on strava’ s end. Assuming you are using a watch, make sure the software is updated. Make sure the maps on your phone are updated and that you calibrate them (just the calibration fixed mine once). Check the setting for how exact your GPS tracking is on your watch. Some have an option for more or less frequent as a battery preservation but that can really jack up the tracking. Then restart everything, watch and phone.
I have worked through this process a few times and can’t always figure out exactly what it is that fixes it, but usually one of these things, coupled with a good reboot does the trick.4 -
@mshaski My watch (garmin vivoactive 4s) gets cadence locked sometimes, especially at higher paces/heart races where those numbers tend to be closer together. If I tighten my watch a bit it helps, but I’m still not convinced it’s actually all that accurate. My heart rate reads high most of the time regardless of effort. I have attempted to use the HR to modify training but have just given up and opted for a perceived effort as I just am not quite to the point of getting a chest strap for that purpose.
@rheddmobile That is some horrible trail etiquette! I’ll admit I get pretty mouthy when people don’t respond to my warnings while running. I know you hear me, you just looked at me. Move over!
I hope those people made it out of there ok. That lady’s behavior seems really odd.1 -
@polskagirl01 - I remember you thought you were coming down with something. Did you test positive for covid? I know they are reporting pretty bad outbreaks of the flu here now too.
On a more humorous note, I'll just say that tinnitus is not good for a musician - I was laying there trying to determine what note I was hearing, then had to get up to check. Haha. It's not constant. Maybe it will go away.
@rheddmobile as frustrating as that must've been, your description of the slow families and crazy dog lady are so funny!
A friend of mine has been having Strava issues like yours for a while now. She's recording on her phone and suspects a GPS issue. Of course her husband's maps look great, even when they run together. She's tried all sorts of things; nothing has helped. It messed up all of her Strava PR's too and has shown her walking on water. Oops.5 -
@polskagirl01 hopefully your tinnitus goes away soon. It is not uncommon after an illness and can be from an inflammatory response or medication or congestion, or any number of things. So what note/pitch is it?
@shanaber I've run on the mall before and it's a really cool place to run. Hopefully, I'll be able to get there - I've packed my running clothes.
